Same shot, but with visor up

EDIT: And for anyone wondering, it was taken with a Nikon D2Xs

[–]Vault-tecPR 1 point2 points ago

Motherfuckin' Nikon cameras in space. I might have known.

[–]Killhas 69 points70 points ago

Proof that the sun isn't yellow, but white.

[–]scylus 30 points31 points ago

The magenta flare pattern is beautiful. Haven't seen this effect in earth-bound pics. Could it be the material in the lens, or do the conditions in space make the flare appear grid-like?

[–]robro 17 points18 points ago

It's definitely the lens, but I have no idea what kind of lens produces that kind of flare. You can also see it in this album cover.

[–]droneprime 13 points14 points ago

I believe that it is actually the sensor that causes the grid pattern. You can see a hexagon by his left elbow that would be more indicative of a hexagonal shutter flare, whereas the red grid is centered about the point source, like a retroreflector. Source: I play an engineer on TV.

[–]robro 7 points8 points ago

I think you may be right. Did some research and people seem to be saying it's from light reflecting off of the sensor array and then being reflected back to the sensor by the internal optics of the lens.

[–]alsomahler 2 points3 points ago

That makes sense

[–]iphonephotog 2 points3 points ago

I dont think it's the sensor. Different lens cause different flares from lighting for me. It has to do with the number of aperture blades (I believe)

[–]onFilm 2 points3 points ago

The aperture blades wouldn't produce multiple circular bokehs from a single light source. It definitely is the sensor.

[–]FLY_MOLO 2 points3 points ago

It's probably from the filter on the lens. Just a guess

[–]ForgotHow -1 points0 points ago

You can achieve this type of flare with an iPhone.

[–]Gottheit 5 points6 points ago

That's just lens flare from his bathroom mirror

[–]JuzPwn 1 point2 points ago

This is by far one of the best pictures I have ever seen.

[–]roborage 2 points3 points ago

The sun, the earth, space, and humanity. It honestly has a lot of beauty to it, and I would have to agree with you. I'm just blown away at the way the sun looks in this shot.

[–]mrwatkins83 102 points103 points ago

I bet he's not making a duck-face inside his helmet.

[–]bakonydraco 48 points49 points ago

My Space angle.

[–]chironomidae 64 points65 points ago

I was gunna say, "In space, nobody can see you duckface."

[–]ForceOgravity 8 points9 points ago

mine was: "you cant tell through the visor but he is duckfacing in there"

damn you reddit

[–]hglman -1 points0 points ago

No duckface here, move along.

[–]thevideoclown 3 points4 points ago

He was probably unintentionnaly smiling though

[–]xheylove 0 points1 point ago

As someone who has a mom that is a mascot, I can vouch for this. I crack up every single time I find a picture of her posing with people and I can see a smile through the dark netting.

[–]mrwatkins83 0 points1 point ago

Your mom is a mascot? For who/what?

[–]xheylove 0 points1 point ago

A recycling company. At first, I thought it was funny but she gets a ton of perks from the job. She's met tons of MLB and NFL players and gets to go to a lot of functions.

[–]truefinn 12 points13 points ago

[–]th1nker 0 points1 point ago

No emo angles either. He clearly isn't insecure or slutty.

[–]Gforce1 35 points36 points ago

Photo bomb level: Planetary....

[–]achshar 26 points27 points ago

... and stellar.

[–]SPOCK_THOUGHT_FIRST 20 points21 points ago

Fuck it. It's too glorious. I don't have anything witty to say about this. Damn I wanna go to space.

[–]Seakawn 4 points5 points ago

Be rich enough and that can be financially attainable in the near-ish (kind of) future.

[–]drzan 4 points5 points ago

Note to self. Find money.

This photo was our morning newspaper last week. Cut it out and it now sits laminated beside our spaceship (built with an old wardrobe) at the preschool :)

[–]drbadvibes 7 points8 points ago

[–]Bunch-O-Atoms 25 points26 points ago

Wow.

Let's hear it for humans, eh? =]

[–]Seakawn 17 points18 points ago

I'm gonna be that guy. Please stop reading: now.

I wouldn't generalize such an extravagant credit to such a broad category... it can become much more meaningful when you narrow the credit down to whom the credit is for and meant to really be shared with. But this doesn't mean it needs to be objectively specific, just relatively more specific. With that said,

Let's hear it for those who love their fellow species and care about what is virtuous and superiorly moral. They've brought us to where we are today, and are responsible for what would be much further societal progress were it not for all of those who inhibit them.

I'm great at parties too.

[–]Iamthetophergopher 6 points7 points ago

Semantics. Bunch-O-Atoms still has a correct statement. That IS a human in that suit, right? Also, his username is pretty relevant.

[–]Bunch-O-Atoms 10 points11 points ago

Fuck it. Have an upvote.

You're welcome at my parties anytime, man.

Advertising idea - "It could be you."

[–]jntwn 1 point2 points ago

Not really, bad eyesight and I'm not cut out for high level physics.

[–]ap2002 3 points4 points ago

Japanese and their cameras are just everywhere!

[–]amontes92 5 points6 points ago

facebook profile pic contest winner.

[–]ghostintheshell12 2 points3 points ago

His next picture will probably be a mirror shot while he's slightly flexing his abs.

[–]coreycubed 2 points3 points ago

New Myspace profile picture!

[–]YouDaGodo 2 points3 points ago

Incredible picture. I'm curious though, why are astronaut's helmets always mirrored? Does it have something to do with protecting them from radiation maybe?

[–]someguy945 2 points3 points ago

I'm guessing that the sun is far more blinding when viewed from space than down here on Earth. Remember, our blue sky is diffused sunlight. In space, they would get 100% of the sunlight direct to their corneas.

The reflective surface probably helps eliminate a lot of that sunlight by bouncing it away. But again I don't know, just guessing.

[–]Team_Braniel 2 points3 points ago

Question: That nice pixel pattern around the sun, is that the individual photo receptors reflecting the sunlight back against the (back of the) lens which is then spread and reflected back into the sensors?

Awesome picture.

[–]hail_to_the_victors 2 points3 points ago

Greatest profile pic of all time.

[–]Orbixx 2 points3 points ago

羨ましい!

[–]reidzen 2 points3 points ago

Needs more lens flare

[–]caamando 2 points3 points ago

Anyone have any idea how to make a helmet like this for a halloween costume? A glass one, not some rinky dink plastic one made out of a clear 2L soda bottle.

[–]chromakode 0 points1 point ago

Gorgeous bokeh in the background.

[–]davidlen 3 points4 points ago

Not bokeh, lens flare

[–]chromakode 0 points1 point ago

Correct, but can't it be both?

[–]SirNoName 3 points4 points ago

I was gonna complain about how this is a repost, but then I realized I'm subscribed to every possible sub this could be posted in...

[–]xerexerex 1 point2 points ago

So you're complaining because people keep reposting it to a shit subreddit?

[–]Aerious 3 points4 points ago

Them Asians, always taking pictures

He's actually taking a picture of his camera on his face.

[–]Ser_Derp 0 points1 point ago

I would duck-face like a fiend if I was him, and everyone would give me props.

[–]pglc 1 point2 points ago

just epic photobombing. good luck retrying this hipsters

[–]Ricktron3030 1 point2 points ago

They really do take cameras everywhere.

[–]d00d1234 1 point2 points ago

That picture is out of this world. (Too obvious?)

[–]davidlen 0 points1 point ago

Is that a white Canon 1D-X?

[–]bthefreeman 0 points1 point ago

Has nobody noticed or wondered why there's an acute lack of stars in this picture? If someone knows, could you please explain?

[–]MrBarry 3 points4 points ago

The high shutter speed required so that the Sun doesn't wash out the whole photo doesn't let enough light in from the stars for them to be visible.

If you have a digital point-n-shoot camera, you can see this effect by trying to focus on the clouds while buildings and trees are also in the photo. If you focus on the clouds, the buildings/trees go dark because the camera restricts incoming light. If you focus on the buildings/trees the clouds become a blank white sky because the camera allows more incoming light, washing out the subtle differences between cloud and sky.

Stars are relatively very dim. To get a good shot of them, you'd have to make sure that the Sun and anything local that was reflecting sunlight was not in the frame. e.g. planets, moons, space stations, your hand.

[–]bthefreeman 1 point2 points ago

Thank you Mr. Barry. It is because of people like you that I find reddit a more trustworthy source than anything else on the interwebs.

[–]Sharlinator 1 point2 points ago

To expand a bit, this holds for human eyes as well, not just cameras. The astronauts themselves are just as unable to see stars if there's something bright in their field of view - and of course it takes time for their eyes to adapt even if they turn their gaze away from objects in full daylight.

[–]datums 0 points1 point ago

That's racist.

[–]micmea1 1 point2 points ago

Jealousy can't even describe how much I wish I could take a picture like that.

[–]with_explosions -1 points0 points ago

Oh look it's THIS picture on the front page....again.

[–]brocahantas 1 point2 points ago

[–]ordona 2 points3 points ago

Not quite sure if I want an astronaut staring at me when I'm emptying the recycle bin.

[–]brocahantas 0 points1 point ago

Not quite sure if I want an astronaut staring at me when I'm cleaning out my porn folder.

[–]blizzy461 1 point2 points ago

this is the coolest thing i've ever seen.

[–]ppfnagain 0 points1 point ago

You know what I love about space suits? With the visor down you can't tell a single thing about this person.

American? Japanese? Russian? Man? Woman?

No. Human.

[–]tamagawa 2 points3 points ago

You make a good point, although there IS a Japanese flag on his shoulder.

[–]ppfnagain 1 point2 points ago

Shhhhhhhhhhhh. :)

[–]WhiteCraneStyle 0 points1 point ago

The only time it's cool to take a self shot.

[–]xspidermanx322 0 points1 point ago

Why no duck lips?

[–]lmao247 0 points1 point ago

Takes own picture, doesn't make a duckface

[–]Stonna 0 points1 point ago

Facebook!

[–]snabbio 0 points1 point ago

Why does it say (Japan) when this is clearly (Space)?

[–]Tron22 0 points1 point ago

Nothing like a good repost 24 hours later.

[–]fadec 0 points1 point ago

He almost had a kick ass okcupid profile. Too bad it's a self shot.

[–]TravelingLex 0 points1 point ago

Pfft, like that's really him.

[–]wallofechoes 0 points1 point ago

+1 duckface

[–]basicbreakfast 0 points1 point ago

As soon as he gets home, he's making that his Facebook profile picture.

[–]persnicketypoop 0 points1 point ago

I have the APOD app for my android, which gives you a new space-themed wallpaper for your phone every day. This picture was my background a few days ago. It was the first thing I saw when I woke up and I was scared shitless for about five seconds.

[–]varukasalt 0 points1 point ago

[–]road_kill_ryan 0 points1 point ago

Remember kids, you will never be as awesome as this.

[–]tylertime98 0 points1 point ago

I cant tell If he is doing the duck face

[–]bluenoser613 0 points1 point ago

Wow. How more amazing a self shot can you get? Now THAT is a personal accomplishment. You sir, ROCK!

[–]hangtight97 0 points1 point ago

[–]amacd98 1 point2 points ago

Strange... They don't look Japanese

[–]mostacolli 0 points1 point ago

My compliments on a beautiful sculpture of light

[–]pixelastronaut 1 point2 points ago

This picture is fucking awesome!

[–]spz456 0 points1 point ago

That is so good (brilliant), and people in Islamic countries want to go back to Sharia Law. This picture is enough to stop them in their tracks.

[–]ThePerson98 0 points1 point ago

Imagine this guy's view right now. We can see the reflection of it, but imagine what it's like with your own two eyes. He's looking down upon the ISS and right behind that is the entire freakin' Earth: the planet in which all life evolved from basic bacteria to humans, and the place where virtually all humans have ever existed, with the exception of those who have been in space.

I can't imagine a more humbling and mindblowing experience that anybody could possibly have in today's world.

[–]Jejoisland 0 points1 point ago

Must get pretty lonely up there : /

[–]orbd 0 points1 point ago

Jesus, being out in space must be a terrifying experience.

[–]routari 0 points1 point ago

They all look alike... these astronauts...

[–]walenga -1 points0 points ago

He's not an astronaut, he's a takionaut.

[–]MrBarry 3 points4 points ago

He's Japanese, not Chinese.

[–]JAMONLEE 1 point2 points ago

Camwhore.

[–]Blended_frog -1 points0 points ago

look at this fucking hipster..

[–]sr20inans2000 1 point2 points ago

i bet he was thinking: " this is going to be such a good facebook profile picture."

[–]Rts_5ever 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if that will be his picture for any of the social network's he uses.
