The only buttons that actually do anything are the "launch" button and the "land" button. The rest is preprogrammed.

Well, you're actually not entirely incorrect. There is no launch button, but there is a land button which is preprogrammed.

The computer system is very elaborate, having over 250,000 lines of code. It is responsible, among many other things, for the automatic control of the entire ascent to orbit, and for the descent until well into the atmosphere (below Mach 1) once one button is pushed deciding the landing site desired. It would be possible to make the entire landing automatically (except that the landing gear lowering signal is expressly left out of computer control, and must be provided by the pilot, ostensibly for safety reasons) but such an entirely automatic landing is probably not as safe as a pilot controlled landing. During orbital flight it is used in the control of payloads, in displaying information to the astronauts, and the exchange of information to the ground.

that's what i thought too until someone i know who is a pilot started explaining what the buttons in a cockpit do. if you have 4 engines, then each engine has about 4 different measurement devices (temp, pressure etc) so immediately that is 16 dials which are now accounted for and are gone from the visual noise, and after about two minutes of simple explanation about 85% of the buttons were accounted for and made sense.

Cushy chairs are bad when going through high Gs. The gravity will smash you through the padding and it will hurt worse.

This is actually a design feature in ejection seats. There is less padding material on the seat so that the seat has less time to accelerate before it slams into you. If the seats were too cushy it would break bones when it hit you. I don't know that this is the reason for the seat design on the shuttle, but little padding does help in high G situations.

Having watched my father meticulously memorize the layout of every airplane he trains on I think I can say, emphatically yes, they know what every button does and when they should press them. Nothing my dad flies even goes to space and he spends enough time reading manuals and in simulators to earn a graduate degree in buttons.

In a way, I think that's not so different from the shuttle's flight deck. The flight deck is arranged in a logical way, with groups of switches pertaining to a specific aspect of the shuttle's function. When you look at the groups, there really aren't so many.

Everything looks more complicated when you don't know what it does. The pilots know exactly what they're looking at. With enough training and time in a simulator, you could learn the correct procedures for at least one of the crew members. Of course, a lot is listed in checklints and the crew members are mostly just following a script. It's crazy how much of spaceflight is automated. The crew members are mostly just stewards making sure everything's going to plan and enabling/disabling things at the correct times.

EDIT: After re-reading what I just wrote, I think I probably shouldn't just dismiss the crew as stewards. There is still an incredible amount of skill that goes into many tasks, such as docking with the ISS or landing after re-entry. All I'm saying is there's a lot of button pressing and switch flicking in between.

There are definitely backup-systems, like backup hydraulics, backup electrical, backup flight computers... some switches may only be used in emergency situations, but not many. Most (maybe 95%+) of the switches in there will be used at least once during the mission. I'd estimate more than 70% are used several times during the mission. I wouldn't count circuit breakers in the list of "switches," because circuit breakers are meant to never be used in normal-flight. They are only used if there is a failure of some sort of electrical equipment, but this image does not depict many of the circuit breakers, which I believe are off to the side and behind the pilots (I can see some in the bottom-right of the image). The reason I think I can say this is because airliners are close to the same level of complexity when it comes to cockpit layout, and I'm a commercial pilot. The instrument panels (the screens in front of the pilots) are actually duplicated, one set for the pilot, one set for the co-pilot, so in that sense there is some extra clutter there that displays the same information twice, but that is necessary so that both pilots have optimal viewing of those primary instruments. All of the switches around the cockpit are shared between the pilots and don't have duplicates or other ways to control them. There also are not automated ways to have these switches take care of themselves. Here is some information on older space shuttle systems & buttons/switches.

They're very uncomfortable! I got to go inside Endeavor after they turned it off for the final time this summer in preparation to be transported. There are specific places inside the flight deck that you have to step on to maneuver yourself into the seat without accidentally hitting all the buttons, because the flight deck as a whole is incredibly compact. You can't adjust how you're seated, either, and the seats aren't padded or anything like that.

You can't see it in the OP's photo, but you can see it circled here. This unusual-looking switch controls the nose wheel steering and has a piece of plastic tubing attached to simply make it easier to trigger. During the maiden voyage of Atlantis in October 1985, commander Karol J. Bobko found that the thick gloves of his pressurized suit made it challenging to quickly throw the switch during landing. This piece of tubing was both playfully and helpfully installed by those processing the shuttle after the mission. It is present in all three orbiters, affectionately known as the "Bob" switch, for its namesake commander.

For training NASA had a converted lear jet (or something like that) and they would literally turn the engines on reverse and then let the shuttle pilot fly the plane with the 6 inch joystick (other pilot seat had regular plane flight controls). Basically flying a rock with a toothpick.
