Its a European Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) and the picture was taken in a deer park in Nottinghamshire where the deer can roam free and are fairly used to people. The deer wasn't fully asleep when I took this, he had rested his head for a few seconds and I was lucky to ge the shot. He really, really, definitely isn't dead.

Actual guy who took the picture here, listen to this person.

Fuck him! We've got Reddit-experts up the wazoo in here.

Everyone needs to calm down and stop assuming this buck is dead. If you've spent time in the woods and have actually seen what dead animals look like you would realize he's just resting. Animals don't walk into the middle of open fields to die; they find somewhere private and hidden.

This picture was taken by redditor /u/ZuMetal and posted in /r/pics about a year ago. Here's a link to the thread where he discusses the photo further.

Well that de-escalated quickly.

someone make an opposite-to-the-anchor-man image for this, stat.

Actually with Chronic Wasting Disease on the rise many essentially go insane and do go in random places to die many times laying down and passing out in random places. Also as you said animals don't walk into open fields to die but they also don't walk into open fields to sleep either unless something is wrong with them.

On a side note that deer has a hell of a lot to worry about cause I would shot it so fast and make deer steaks for a month and damn look at that rack sheeeeeet.

You're right it could be CWD, but from what I've seen it usually leaves the deer looking more obviously sick. It's been my experience that Red Deer in Britain will pick rather open areas to bed. (I've never personally seen them THIS exposed though, mind you.) It may have something to do with the complete lack of natural predators for so many generations.

And while I would also love to make myself some venison jerky from this fine buck, there are very few places in England where you can legally hunt big game, and I don't believe Nottinghamshire is one of them.

Please stop using language.

This is very true. Last summer some friends and I drove out to the mountains then hiked around 5 miles to go camping for a week. We had a great time and didn't see any dead animals like that. We hiked back to the car and what do you know, dead dear in the back seat.

[–]Fadic4 21 points22 points ago

doesnt hunting season start soon? he has something to worry about.

[–]Inner_Pickle 18 points19 points ago

[–]johnsbury 77 points78 points ago

bucks don't fall asleep in the middle of an open field. pretty sure it's dead or on it's way to being dead. if it's alive and sleeping like that it could be a farm animal.

[–]rcon1021 4 points5 points ago

Well... he still has no worries then.

[–]Hoare3314 -1 points0 points ago

No worries except for hunting season.

[–]BunnyPoppit 7 points8 points ago

Well that changes everything.....cries

[–]gder 12 points13 points ago

Looks like an elk to me, if that's the case it's a bull not a buck.

[–]tylerbgood 2 points3 points ago

European Red Deer, actually.

[–]aelzeiny 10 points11 points ago

I'm no taxonologist, but I'm pretty sure this is what we are looking at here

[–]unrealdustin 4 points5 points ago

Someone give this man a Ph.D!

[–]gder 1 point2 points ago

Neat, looks a lot different than the white tail and mule deer we have around here.

[–]Curlaub 5 points6 points ago

He's clearly not dead. If he were, the weight of his antlers would tip his head to the side.

[–]nosciencehere 1 point2 points ago

Plot twist it has schizophrenia.

[–]binaryecho 11 points12 points ago

BOOM! HEADSHOT.

[–]may_be_indecisive 4 points5 points ago

Predators? Lions, cougars? Anyway it looks dead already.

[–]randy-_-seth 0 points1 point ago

Mybe that is what OP means....you know, the whole dead thing

[–]Emphursis 1 point2 points ago

With antlers like that? Quite a lot actually.

[–]spoonard 0 points1 point ago

I'd say for at least a month or two out of the year he has a WHOLE LOT to worry about.

[–]Cytrin 0 points1 point ago

Suddenly hunters.

[–]CaptFlowers 1 point2 points ago

Nope. Just Chuck Testa.

[–]Hynil -1 points0 points ago

Nothing to worry about... Besides hunters.

[–]JoesMonkeyLand 0 points1 point ago

I'm just thinking of the tics.

[–]lazylion_ca 0 points1 point ago

[–]AloneIntheCorner -2 points-1 points ago

Nothing to worry about? What about a steady food source, predators, all that crap every animal needs?

[–]Scarjaka -5 points-4 points ago

Looks dead.

Edit: No really, it looks fucking dead. No deer is going to lay out in the open like that.

[–]HiImTed -2 points-1 points ago
