Not Penny's phone

[–]redthunda69 29 points30 points ago

Charlie died to give us iOS 6. But he changed his mind at the last second. Something must have happened.

[–]sgtpppr 0 points1 point ago

He just figured he'd look for the nearest mortuary as a last favor (Charlie was so helpful), opened up maps, and immediately regretted dying for it.

[–]SinisterKid 367 points368 points ago

We have to go back...to iOS 5.

[–]CleverTrevor 63 points64 points ago

I made the not so clever decision to update my 3GS to iOS 6. I want to go back so badly!

[–]danrennt98 54 points55 points ago

Not... Penny's... Software

[–]chrisrocks 34 points35 points ago

Here's how to go back (check the important edit at the end first):

  1. Check if you have a recent backup of your phone settings and data on iTunes. If not, back up now.
  2. Download the 5.1.1 firmware (called an IPSW file) for your specific iPhone (the 3GS), save it. Look here for an IPSW download link.
  3. Put your phone into DFU mode.
  4. Launch iTunes, iTunes should ask to restore the phone. Hold down Option (shift on PC) and click Restore at the same time, you can manually install the IPSW. iTunes will re-install all your phone data you've backed up.

Here's a video. If you have trouble, download TinyUmbrella, it helps put the phone in and out of DFU mode and fixes various other issues.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Use TinyUmbrella first to confirm you have SHSH blobs from 5.1.1, otherwise just forget the whole thing and just use Google Maps from the Safari browser. (thanks to everyone for noting the SHSH blobs, I didn't realize the door shut so soon. But, chances are good you might have SHSH's out there. Now's the time to look)

[–]yuyu2003 12 points13 points ago

The downgrade window has already closed. There's no way to do it now without shsh files.

[–]pinkflowers 4 points5 points ago

This is very true, so people, please don't go trying to downgrade your phone and then come back here to complain about how something went wrong or it didn't work. The only way to downgrade, like this user said, is to have your shsh files saved. Good news for jailbroken people, your shsh files may be saved in cydia, so go check, because then you can possibly downgrade.

[–]Mastrik 1 point2 points ago

Really? I screwed around with jail breaking when I first got my iPad, produced too many bugs for my taste but I did back up the shsh blobs, so this means I can downgrade back to 5.1.1 without needing to jailbreak iOS 6 (which obviously isn't possible?), I need to Google this shit!

[–]chrisrocks 0 points1 point ago

Edited. Thanks

[–]chrisrocks 0 points1 point ago

Just did an edit. Thanks

[–]ZeroThroughNine 3 points4 points ago

what exactly is going on with iOS6? I'm still on earlier OS

[–]apteryx_274 1 point2 points ago

I guess the Maps sucks. But IDK why they can't just import their location into Google Maps, I guess the GM App for iOS6 isn't out for a month or two, something like that.

[–]sexlexia_survivor 1 point2 points ago

Do you know what sucks about it?

[–]noreallyimthepope 2 points3 points ago

A lot of the data is imprecise (addresses being off by a little or a lot)

Towns on the wrong islands

Lack of details that are usually present in GMaps

Lack of transit trip calculation

[–]sexlexia_survivor 2 points3 points ago

Interesting. The last one is a deal breaker for me.

[–]junkit33 0 points1 point ago

Picture going back to how Google Maps was maybe 7 years ago. That's about where Apple is at with their own maps. In a year or two it will be fine, but for now, it is a disaster.

[–]Jacob2040 1 point2 points ago

You can tell just have to download it desperately and mess with your host file. Pretty easy with a little tech know how. I had to when I jail broke my device.

[–]Gbcue 18 points19 points ago

I thought Apple stuff "just worked." If I was going to tinker with my phone, I'd buy an Android device. Those even come with good maps.

[–]YimYimYimi 0 points1 point ago

When people ask me why I jailbreak, I will link them to this post.

[–]Sobertese 0 points1 point ago

With my plain 4, it was like getting admission to the museum, but no tickets to the sweet deep sea special exhibit.

Or a massage with no happy ending.

[–]brazilliandanny 17 points18 points ago

[–]apteryx_274 2 points3 points ago

Best use of Hitler in a dramatic Youtube dubover, congratulations. I have to break with history, and agree with Hitler on this one.

[–]revchj 1 point2 points ago

So good. Thanks for the link.

[–]arrowheadt 6 points7 points ago

I declined the update, thank god, Google maps FTW!

[–]He11razor 0 points1 point ago

Google Maps is the best!

[–]bloodwrench 0 points1 point ago

Double True!

[–]Jblackbelt 0 points1 point ago

Does this mean that we have to crash a plane to do that?

[–]halcyonera 2 points3 points ago

Kate, damn it, run! the GOOGLE MAPS!

[–]Yoyo8 -1 points0 points ago

Wtf?! Why are the maps so complicated. I can't use other ways of transportation instead of driving. It's very upsetting.

[–]unhhoh12 0 points1 point ago

OTHERS, OTHERS, OTHERS... operating systems

[–]JohnScribbles 41 points42 points ago

It's missing team leader Ben Linus

[–]zoodiary8 7 points8 points ago

wow my real name is Ben Linus

[–]Dabboo 39 points40 points ago

Hello, Ben. I've been expecting you.

[–]StuGovGuy 21 points22 points ago

I read that in Locke's voice. God I miss this show.

[–]TheKingInTheNorth 11 points12 points ago

If you miss the theorizing the most, like I did, I still haven't found a show that quite replaces it. Though reading A Song of Ice and Fire has certainly filled in my theory-making desires for now.

And its very similar, you've got lots of time to hone your theories: LOST went years without answering any questions, and GRRM goes years without releasing the next book.

[–]xAbaddon 2 points3 points ago

I'm hoping Revolution fills that void, but I doubt it. I'm currently rewatching LOST all the way through for the third time.

[–]imtheprofessor 2 points3 points ago

Has Revolution started yet? Also, you should check out Flashforward. Even though it got cancelled after one season, awesome show. Also also, I currently rewatching LOST for the fourth time, and it's still amazing.

[–]xAbaddon 0 points1 point ago

Revolution started last week. New episode on tonight at 10 P.M EST I believe. I missed last weeks episode though, so I'm looking for it.

[–]Turbineblade666 1 point2 points ago

Dude, I'm so sorry Ben shot you in the back of the head.

[–]CookinNstuff 2 points3 points ago

You see this little hole? This moth's just about to emerge. It's in there right now, struggling. It's digging it's way through the thick hide of the cocoon. Now, I could help it - take my knife, gently widen the opening, and the moth would be free - but it would be too weak to survive. Struggle is nature's way of strengthening it. Now this is the second time you've asked me for your drugs back... ask me again, and it's yours.

[–]zoodiary8 -1 points0 points ago

Hello, Hope you are Fine..

[–]scratchfury 16 points17 points ago

Where is the find my WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!!! app?

[–]constantvariables 16 points17 points ago

Don't tell me where I can't go.

[–]CookinNstuff 0 points1 point ago

YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO

[–]BillNyetheFryGuy 33 points34 points ago

I'm sure that Apple maps has some....Arzt...on it.

[–]Dr_Alex 22 points23 points ago

[–]eyereport 18 points19 points ago

We're still in the Shire, dude.

[–]bravoredditbravo 4 points5 points ago

We're still in the Shire, Pip

[–]LotsAndLotsOfWater 19 points20 points ago

I miss LOST... I re-watched it over the summer and after I finished it I was sadder than I was when it first finished up. Its so different watching it episode after episode because you can be engrossed in the story more than waiting each week and even a year when they took a break. They hype for the show was awesome and kept you wanting more.

Apple blows.

[–]bravoredditbravo 4 points5 points ago

Also, when you re-watch everything again the story is so much better

[–]LotsAndLotsOfWater 4 points5 points ago

Its just like re-reading a book. You know whats going to happen and you can see all of the little details put into it. Thats he biggest reason I'm an English major, fucking love plot.

[–]dr_mike_rithjin -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, I don't know about that. I loved it up until about the end of season 3. Then they moved towards time traveling. At that point I was a bit like "seriously? We're doing this? Okay, fine I'm on board." I personally feel like they wrote themselves into a hole because they were making money from an, initially, well written series. The ending pissed me off immensely.

[–]pig_is_pigs 3 points4 points ago

Thank goodness somebody posted what the context of the image was. I was sitting here thinking "Apple devs look like the cast of a B horror movie?"

[–]LotsAndLotsOfWater 4 points5 points ago

I was surprised after I read the first couple comments that it wasn't mentioned. Felt good to be helpful. For real though, everyone needs to watch it.

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

ts so different watching it episode after episode because you can be engrossed in the story more than waiting each week and even a year when they took a break.

I fel the exact opposite, the highlight of the show for me was 6 years of theorising, discussing, going on forums, listening to podcasts and anxiously awaiting each week (or waiting through an 8 month gap).

Nothing has even come close to Lost for me since.

[–]TheJokeTerminator 18 points19 points ago

How can he be "Literally Hitler"? That means he had to a be alive in ww2, kill millions of Jews by commanding the Nazis and ruler of the Third Reich. Yeah, I don't think you know what literally means.

The thing is, I'm not asking anyone else to upvote the person. I'm upvoting because I feel it's humorous, and I posted the comment because a lot of people do enjoy novelty accounts, but downvote them because they don't check the username.

[–]dissidentrhetoric 1 point2 points ago

I don't find this funny, must be humour for apple fanatics. Different breed of human.

[–]wallflower8675309 31 points32 points ago

I just crossed my state and the GPS worked awesome.

[–]borntorunathon 14 points15 points ago

I was 30 minutes late to a gig yesterday because the apple map took me to the middle of nowhere. Granted the gig was at a weird venue on a country road, but google maps using Safari found it immediately, and when I looked back at the apple map to try and manually plot a course, two of the roads to get to the venue weren't even on the map. I was a skeptic at first about all the anti-apple backlash, but after that experience, I'm convinced the app is shit.

[–]ohkatey 18 points19 points ago

I've been testing it out too and it seems to work fine for me.

Also, TomTom supplies the maps, and they're pretty reliable. I hate when companies get slashed when something has a couple small bugs that people pretend are app-crippling. I like Google Maps, but I also like Maps and the turn-by-turn works great.

[–]IDidntChooseUsername 59 points60 points ago

It's not the functionality of the app, but quality of the maps.

[–]dwaxe 13 points14 points ago

I've had the same problem with my university. The outlines of buildings in Google Maps was invaluable in helping me find my way around.

[–]resiroth 4 points5 points ago

I have outlines at my college, I think it depends on whether someone bothered to add them into open street map.

[–]misstyke 2 points3 points ago

Surely this is a one week long problem. I don't think i'd have even thought of maps when i was in college.

[–]axearm 1 point2 points ago

At my Alma Mater university this is a one week problem for 10,000 new students every year. So a 10,000 week problem per year.

[–]manwithnostomach 6 points7 points ago

Well..the iOS6 map is more in-line with Apple's aesthetic direction...

[–]Ultraseamus 5 points6 points ago

Heh, it's the Apple way. Their maps are not what need fixing, the world needs to take Apple maps as an example, and fix their roads.

[–]Veggieleezy 3 points4 points ago

AH... Now I understand.

[–]Krobus 1 point2 points ago

And the quality of the searches. Between Apple and Google, who do you suppose does a better job at relevant search results

[–]helloworld440 0 points1 point ago

Go BGSU! Where did you find this image? Are you from there?

[–]IDidntChooseUsername 0 points1 point ago

I'm not from there, this is just a comparison image another Redditor linked to a few days ago.

[–]WTFisBehindYou 0 points1 point ago

For driving, I really hate seeing all of that shit on the left...I'm a super anxious driver. That being said, I still wish it were there as addresses aren't the end all be all of directions and "getting to where you need to go."

[–]Castule 5 points6 points ago

My main problem with it is that I live in Japan and the app is very lacking in detail. I'm pretty sure the turn-by-turn navigation isn't set for words in Japanese. From what I've seen online it is terrible for people who live in the country side in Japan (like me). Google Maps has been a life saver. I am not upgrading to the new OS until Apple can supply me with a map app as good as Google's.

[–]Flukemaster 3 points4 points ago

Australian here. I feel your pain.

[–]ohkatey 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, to be fair, I've obviously not used it internationally. I'm only relating my experience here, in the US.

[–]joeyparis 3 points4 points ago

Okay, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't mind the new maps. I've been using them for a few months now (I'm a developer) and have yet to have a single problem with them. It shows me where I am, tells me where I am going and how to get there. I have yet to get "lost" because my GPS doesn't know where it's going.

[–]Garathon -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, you're obviously developing Down's syndrome. Why change the world's best maps to a lousy third rate app?

[–]joeyparis 0 points1 point ago

I'm not saying it's better than Google maps or that Apple should have replaced Google maps with it I'm just saying I don't have a problem with it. It works fine for me and what I need it for. If it doesn't work for you there are plenty of other apps that you can use for maps.

[–]99K9s 7 points8 points ago

Well, small bugs that make your phone drop a call are not a huge deal. But, "small" bugs that can lead you 15 miles away from your destination and get you lost in an area you aren't familiar with, that's a big deal. To me, a buggy Maps app is not acceptable from any company.

[–]IWantToSayThis 3 points4 points ago

I think it's amazing how someone can label the problems with maps as "couple of small bugs". The maps are years behind what Google Maps can offer. Wrong directions, places that don't exist, places in the middle of lakes, and that's the good part, in the US. International users have it much worse. Whole cities disappear (http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/20/apples_new_maps_in_ios_6_draw_ire_from_users_around_the_world)

The reality of the matter is that Apple put out a vastly inferior product for the simple fact that the competitor's is better.

Please stop apologizing for a 600 billion dollar company.

[–]ohkatey 0 points1 point ago

I didn't "apologize for Apple" (which is a really stupid phrase, no consumer can apologize for a company.) What I did is defend an app that I think people are overreacting about by simply stating my opinion, which is that for me, Maps has worked just fine. I have not yet found a place that I've needed to go that it hasn't found, and I have not yet received wrong directions, even with construction closures.

[–]isamura 0 points1 point ago

Let's not pretend Google maps was perfect either while we're at it...

[–]futurespice 4 points5 points ago

Google maps can locate the capital city of my country. Apple maps can't. Not even a contest...

[–]Garathon 0 points1 point ago

It's about a thousand times better than iOs6 maps that can't even find my city. Apple are total idiots for reinventing the wheel and making it square.

[–]slaney 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I have had the same experience. It didn't have turn by turn before, so for my use cases I rarely ever used it. I am super happy with it now.

[–]texas_joe_hotdog 3 points4 points ago

They don't love you like I love you...

[–]Hedgehogsarepointy 1 point2 points ago

MaaAAaaAAaaAAaaAAps

[–]Blizzard01 8 points9 points ago

If Steve was alive Apple wouldn't have release such a piece of shit app. Steve would have told them: "This is a fucking piece of shit, and we are going to remove it from the OS until it is finished".

Apple, be careful cus this is how your big bubble may pop.

[–]tdotgoat 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, the Losties where fairly good at not getting lost in the jungle.

[–]AriseChicken 2 points3 points ago

Seriously people, just use waze. It has community based maps. You spot an error a user can go in and fix the map. It has live traffic based on users data being sent back to them. Waze on my iPhone blew my GPS out of the water with its functionality. Oh and it's free.

[–]KingkaiMaui 2 points3 points ago

If this were the team? Id be damn happy, because half of those fuckers could track like Terminators.

[–]ihasakiwi 0 points1 point ago

This is so funny to me.

[–]Dankycheese 0 points1 point ago

I get the feeling reddit doesn't like apple

[–]Paranoiac -1 points0 points ago

is the horse dead yet?

[–]kabomlamma 4 points5 points ago

its funny apple is so high profile because of their marketing that tomtom, who supplied the maps isn't mentioned at all

[–]nmpraveen 6 points7 points ago

I dont seem to understand what you mention by data and maps? maps contains data.. I guess you mean satellite images are not provided by TomTom.. In that case, its true... There is a big list of data providers for Apple maps.. Full list here: http://gspa21.ls.apple.com/html/attribution.html

[–]blorg 4 points5 points ago

The point is, it's not just Tom Tom, they are using data from a whole load of different providers and trying to mash it together algorithmically rather than by using humans. In this case, it often turns out as less than the sum of the parts. Interesting post from a cartographer here:

http://blog.telemapics.com/?p=399

[–]futurespice 1 point2 points ago

This is extremely interesting and you should submit it as it's own link.

[–]Kalahan6 -1 points0 points ago

Well, the main problem is tha maps data. POI missing or having the wrong location.

And this is exactly what's wrong with my TomTom One. The POI suck.

The street layout and street names all appear to be correct both on TomTom and on Google Maps.

[–]poktanju 2 points3 points ago

It's not any different from Google Maps. Look at the bottom right of the map window and you can see where they get their data from. It's what you do with the data that counts.

[–]kabomlamma 3 points4 points ago

that's what Tasha said

[–]dcamco 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only person who thinks the new maps app is 10x better than the previous google version?

[–]DesertCoot -1 points0 points ago

No, you definitely are not. I think it is way better as well. Most people have no experience and read one review saying they are bad and hammer it non-stop. People who hate iPhones just bitch about any minor flaw that comes up.

[–]Garathon 0 points1 point ago

Jesus, you both are retards. Just because you both live in the one city on the planet where the majority of streets are correctly mapped and you haven't discovered the erroneous yet, doesn't mean they're good.

[–]iwasntexpectingthat 2 points3 points ago

Good thing this hasn't happened to me yet. I am really really really bad at directions. I had to use the map app about 5 or 6 times to go to the library from the shopping centre which was 5 minutes walk away. The sad thing is I always go to that shopping centre so I should at least have an idea.

[–]mliving 2 points3 points ago

Had a chance to play with and iPhone 5 this morning.

A colleague who pre-ordered complained about the maps, obviously (man do they SUCK), iTunes wasn't syncing properly, neither was his DropBox or Flickr accounts. Didn't seem any faster than my 2 gen iTouch. Screen looked nice but not noticeably better than the Samsung Galaxy III.

Definitely going with the Samsung Galaxy III.

That picture is missing Bryan Sato. There were 16 original crash survivors.

[–]CrimsonLark 1 point2 points ago

72 initial survivors/324 people on board, actually, if you count all the background characters + Vincent.

[–]home_pale_blue_dot 2 points3 points ago

No Ana Lucia, but Libby is there. I'm OK with that, I hated Ana Lucia as a character, to be truthful, I've never liked a Michelle Rodriguez role.

[–]elgiorgie 1 point2 points ago

Hmm. I gotta say, I got the update and my map situation has been pretty sweet. Also, being able to rotate 360 degrees in satellite mode is pretty awesome. Especially as an architect. It's nice to get different aerial perspectives.

I'm sure the glitches will get worked out soon. Either way...All this shit just makes me think of Louie. Everything's amazing and no one is happy.

[–]midgettamer 0 points1 point ago

Uh.....where the hell is Desmond?

[–]CrimsonLark 0 points1 point ago

I believe this is the promo for Season 2. Desmond wasn't added to the main cast until Season 3.

[–]Jiles-Mcfrafon -1 points0 points ago

How brave.

[–]torchthedresser 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why people keep complaining about the new maps app. If anything goes wrong, all you have to do is set Desmond Hume to be your constant.

[–]sheldonismyfather 0 points1 point ago

Wait! I think Helen Keller missed them memo to come get a group picture!

[–]NOTHING_T00_FANCY 0 points1 point ago

man i forgot all about shannon...what a completely unremarkable character.

You people know there are other, better maps programs than both iOS 6 AND iOS 5 Maps, right?

I will up vote just because they included Mr. Eko. Or are we supposed to be talking about maps?

[–]birdsofapheather 1 point2 points ago

Don't know why iOS 6 is getting so much hate. Yes they got rid of the youtube app, but there is a free version in the app store that works great and is more like the actual website. Maps does have room for improvement, but I just used it last night for a road trip and the turn by turn direction worked great. I feel people are hating just to hate because that's what in right now.

Why is nobody pointing out the obvious fact that there is a Google marketing blitz behind this?

Apple clearly wanted to cut them out of the iOS game as much as possible, both because of the massive value of the data produced (seriously, it's worth a lot to market research types to find out what you're searching for, and Google Maps is only behind Google.com in search volume) and probable licensing fees for incorporating it into each phone.

This move cuts into Google's search hegemony, even if only by a bit, and that probably pissed them off. Only an idiot PR monkey would let this slide without an attack - it's a perfect opportunity to snatch a bit of Apple's entrenched user base.

I haven't had a problem with it yet. Sucks to not have street view though.

[–]midvote 1 point2 points ago

I figure the various problems will get sorted out over time and there's actually some things I like better about these maps. But getting rid of street view is brutal. That and the satellite view (which is now much lower quality) are the main reasons I bought a smartphone in the first place. I chose an iPhone because it had the best image quality, but I'll be switching for my next phone if these things aren't fixed.

"We wanted to focus on it's aesthetic appeal first and usability second. We feel our users will appreciate this the most."

[–]Garathon 0 points1 point ago

Well, judging from the iPhone owner's comments here they were correct. Who gives a fuck about actually finding your destination when they're so smooth and you can rotate them in 3d?

[–]Redstoneminer05 0 points1 point ago

Download ios 6, then download google maps app. Problem solved! Almost...

[–]eyereport 0 points1 point ago

YOU ALL EVERYBODY

The media keeps dinging Apple with screenshots of their 3D terrain with bridges sinking into valleys, like the Hoover Dam. But Google Earth shows the exact same thing.

Not sure about that lumpy airport one though, I didn't know where to look.
