Just when you thought it couldn't do it again... IT DOES IT AGAIN!

[–]Im_11 99 points100 points ago

It may even do it AGAIN, but we aren't able to discern the smaller drops that follow suit..

[–]Nemokles 72 points73 points ago

It did it again. I zoomed in and was able to discern a tiny droplet on the way down. You'll only see it for a moment if you look closely.

Edit: You can also see the shadow just before it hits the surface. If you have RES, drag out the gif until it's covers the screen and look closely.

[–]Going_Braindead 3 points4 points ago

You're right, it did

[–]Dracomantis 4 points5 points ago

My eyes are shit, so I'm putting faith in you two!

[–]vinfx 3 points4 points ago

Not counting the first drop, it does it 4 times that I can see. The 4th is only visible through the shadow.

[–]Nemokles 2 points3 points ago

You can see a tiny little droplet, but not all the way since the quality is so poor. Zoom in as much as you can and look at the area you'd expect it to be (I mean, if you want to spend the time doing it, we've established that there is a last droplet anyways).

[–]redditor3000 0 points1 point ago

Dude... it goes on forever

[–]yuruku 15 points16 points ago

Could it theoretically do it forever? When does it stop?

[–]Ravek 44 points45 points ago

Could it theoretically do it forever?

Water is made up of atoms, that are indivisible under normal circumstances. So it's easy to see that it could not go on forever.

When does it stop?

At some point, when the droplet is small enough, the force of it being absorbed will no longer be strong enough to overcome the surface tension of the puddle and throw a new droplet upward. Instead it will just be a final ripple.

[–]Xenian 0 points1 point ago

Even if we were somehow in such circumstances where atoms could easily split, the process would still not go on forever. According to Planck's Length, there is a limit to how small things can be - or at least, how small things can be while remaining observable (regardless of the instrument used).

[–]lovesdogz 3 points4 points ago

I would think once the drop was small enough, the surface tension of the water would probably keep it from making another one.

[–]StraightAsARainbow 1 point2 points ago

It looks like it was about to do it again, you can see the last drop go way under and then come up but right before it gets out of the water the gif repeats.

[–]pibbs 16 points17 points ago

that's just a reflection

[–]StraightAsARainbow 14 points15 points ago

oh shit...... that must be an extremely small drop because I cant even see the one out of the water.

also im an idiot because why would a drop of water be under water?

[–]starrymirth 1 point2 points ago

A drop of water can exist underwater, with a thin film of air surrounding it, they're just rather unstable. I would recommend looking up antibubbles if you want more information - I believe that last little drop may be either an antibubble or a bubble of air under the water.

PS: With some patience and slightly soapy water, you can make antibubbles in a glass jar. It's pretty cool!

[–]charlemagne17 1 point2 points ago

And that will lead to another clue!

[–]HaydenTheFox 0 points1 point ago

Hydrogen bonds are something else, aren't they?

[–]shreeveport_MD 0 points1 point ago

That's what she said

[–]31Orcas 54 points55 points ago

SHABAM! The original.

This clip was recorded at 10,000 fps... O_O. My mind is blown as well. OP has a good taste in brain self-destruction.

[–]bobsmith93 2 points3 points ago

"Exactly half of the droplet disappears into the water underneath." Wouldn't that mean it goes on forever?

[–]DroolingWeremoose 0 points1 point ago

No, because it's composed of atoms and atoms are practically indivisible in these cases.

[–]bobsmith93 0 points1 point ago

Well I would hope not. But yeah I wonder if it keeps going until it's just an atom, and if every drop does this. That would be quite interesting.

[–]deejay_reich 1 point2 points ago

I made a couple gifs from this video a few months ago, too. I posted them a bit further down.

[–]PropadataFilms 81 points82 points ago

LOVE IT!!

Here's a 1,000 Frames Per Second video I shot of Oil on Vibrating Steel: http://youtu.be/O6EVrRzj7uI

This was one of my favorite shots from the Vibration. See the Unseen campaign I directed last year...which btw reddit was instrumental in taking viralz (thanksforthatyo!)

Hope you enjoy - Not sure when/if I'll be able to use the Phantom camera again, so I hope you don't mind me sharing this with y'all :)

[–]Jess_than_three 15 points16 points ago

Wow, that bit with the cymbal is just crazy! :)

[–]PropadataFilms 12 points13 points ago

Thanks!

Yeah, that was a lot more than we were expecting. After we released the video it was funny to watch people debate online over whether it was fake or arguing over how cheap the cymbal must have been, haha (18" zildjian a-custom crash for those wondering)

You can watch the raw Cymbal shot in full here: http://youtu.be/kpoanOlb3-w

It was our last shot of the day, just barely fit in!

[–]Jess_than_three 4 points5 points ago

LOL, that's funny... not surprised that people would do that, though.

That video (and all of them, really) is just so cool! Keep being awesome. :D

[–]PropadataFilms 6 points7 points ago

I appreciate it Jess :)

I'm balancing filmmaking with popsicle making right now in my life. It's a funny balance, but is a fun path. + the two can merge a lot :)

you rock!

[–]The_Minstrel 1 point2 points ago

"Dat shit cray"

[–]DesperateInAustin87 4 points5 points ago

Go rent a phantom from Gavin Free! More slow mo!

[–]macgyverftw 5 points6 points ago

Here's a 1,000 Frames Per Second video I shot of Oil on Vibrating Steel: http://youtu.be/O6EVrRzj7uI

Hmm, blame my dirty mind, but I expected something different.

Awesome video though.

[–]down_vote_magnet 2 points3 points ago

I was confused at the end why it was going to say "PUKE"

[–]Hamilton5M 1 point2 points ago

Any chance you can set me up with a discount on a Fluke 289? I swear I have dreams about that multimeter. Someday I'll find the pesos for one...

[–]JoeGuitar 1 point2 points ago

Dat physics....

[–]MuffinatorXIII 1 point2 points ago

aren't those from Time Warp?

[–]deejay_reich 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I think they were. It's been a while since I looked at them!

[–]Nilla_Wafers 4 points5 points ago

Would it keep doing that down til it was a single molecule of water?

[–]nolemonnomelon 10 points11 points ago

No. You can't have a droplet of water that is just 1 molecule in size.

[–]MindlessDreamer 11 points12 points ago

YES YOU CAN STOP RUINING OUR FUN.

[–]Nilla_Wafers 1 point2 points ago

What I meant was, does this happen due to the the droplet and surface making new bonds? And if so, does that mean that it will continue to bounce until it can't make any more bonds or will it continuously have this effect?

[–]aggrazel -1 points0 points ago

It also doesn't help to answer the question on weather particle man gets wet in water, or if the water gets him instead.

[–]94CM 4 points5 points ago

Dat surface tension.

[–]Reaperr 0 points1 point ago

beat me to it :(

[–]Kroz_McD 5 points6 points ago

Need to pee now.

[–]Stygma 12 points13 points ago

Fucking electrons, how do they work

[–]Greycupcake 3 points4 points ago

At the very end, although you can't really see the tiniest drop (fifth) very well, you can still see the reflection. I'd be interested in an even more microscopic view to find out just how many times it really does this.

[–]carbonbasedlf 3 points4 points ago

Fluid dynamics amaze me, I love watching waves and rain drop into puddles.

[–]nothis 2 points3 points ago

Why? Seriously… why? I mean you can throw all sorts of words at me like "surface tension" but how can that possibly explain the drop bouncing of three times, then standing still then disappearing only to throw a smaller drop into the air again with so much force?

[–]Kowzorz 2 points3 points ago

Try watching the ones deejay_reich posted. One of them, I thought, showed the action that sent the next drop so high.

[–]_oogle 0 points1 point ago

I personally can't explain the bounce back, but if I had to try to explain the rest: due to the hydrogen bonding (intermolecular force between water molecules), water has fairly high surface tension. When a water droplet is dropped into the water, it has enough kinetic energy to overcome the surface tension, and breaks through. When the smaller droplets bounce back, you'll notice they sort of bounce off and then "sit" on the surface for an instant before being absorbed into the rest of the water. I believe what's happening here is that the "bouncing" droplets have too much kinetic energy for its water molecules to form stable hydrogen bonds with the water molecules of the larger body of water, but not enough to break the surface tension of the water. When it slows down/stops sufficiently, the hydrogen bonds can be formed between the molecules in the droplet and the molecules in the rest of the water, at which point it is subsequently absorbed.

Magic up in this bitch!

[–]McBurger 2 points3 points ago

What the fuck, I went for about 10 levels. Is this like the old reddit switcharoo? Is it gonna link me back to that comment with the Snooki Orc?

[–]ProudOwner7 2 points3 points ago

Can someone please make this gif backwards? That would be even better

[–]cybokinetic 1 point2 points ago

thought of the same thing :) it's like watching a tiny waterball evolve!

[–]Gaudy_Monstrosity 3 points4 points ago

lol, no

[–]DigitalChocobo 0 points1 point ago

Who is it?

[–]uk2knerf 0 points1 point ago

Yes, Shaquille O'Neal, arguably the greatest center of all time. He's a fucking baller.

[–]lolnoidea 1 point2 points ago

So hypnotic

[–]bpatience 1 point2 points ago

I think the coolest part is watching the next drop above grow larger throughout the gif.

[–]MMMMMdericious 1 point2 points ago

i never knew it looked like that... watuh suprise !

[–]derpy_lurker 1 point2 points ago

You know, it's funny. I've seen this a couple times now, but no matter what, every time I just sort of sit there and stare at it.

[–]Sajkov 1 point2 points ago

Check out Harold Edgarton's works. He is the father of high-speed photography, as well as other photographic wonders. Keep in mind that most of the pictures in that gallery are 40-60 years old.

I watched it like ten times thinking it was zooming in a little bit each time. SPOILER ALERT: it doesn't

[–]slippy0 0 points1 point ago

I'm taking a class under the man who shot this (John Bush) right now. He's incredibly friendly and easy to talk to.

I'm also giving a presentation today that is totally not done what the hell and am I doing here please send help.

Fractals 8)

[–]call_me_shiny 0 points1 point ago

[–]The_Wholover 0 points1 point ago

The scene is from a show called Timewarp. It's on the science channel and usually shows really cool stuff in really slow motion.

[–]deinonychusturtlepie 0 points1 point ago

Does it keep doing that into infinity like the half-life of radiation?

[–]xirho67 0 points1 point ago
