I do this all the time. I find it impossible to sit up straight

[–]Buttered_Penis 53 points54 points ago

Someone told me I'm going to get scoliosis because of how I sit..

[–]Neelpos 83 points84 points ago

And suddenly I'm sitting up straight.

[–]Buttered_Penis 59 points60 points ago

Don't worry, scoliosis is caused by a number of things, but not bad posture. My friend was wrong.

First of all, scoliosis is commonly a "sideways" curve, not the same kind you develop from bad posture. Second, it's something you're born with or get from a traumatic injury. If you're as old as me they told you different in grammar school, but scoliosis is better understood now. My friend is about my age which is why she was going by old data.

Bad posture can cause other problems, though. Your shoulders can curve forward, your arms will hang with your knuckles facing more forward, rather than facing outward from your body, and you can develop minor bone disorders and pain. Physical therapy can correct this, but it's not really a huge problem.

[–]Cheaba 9 points10 points ago

Hunchback really does have something to do with posture though from what I hear.

[–]Buttered_Penis 8 points9 points ago

I don't know this from any kind of research or anything, but that doesn't sound right. Having a hunchback is very abnormal, and it seems like someone would have to have an abnormal bone structure to have that disorder.

I think at the very worst, poor posture would cause the spine would curve to the point where the neck-bone is almost horizontal, and even that seems unlikely. The idea that one's back could be higher than the head is unimaginable.

Anecdote: I usually sit with my legs elevated about as high as my head and the only problem I have is that I hunch forward.

[–]Buttered_Penis 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the link. From what I've read the causes of that and scoliosis are pretty much the same.

"It can be either the result of degenerative diseases (such as arthritis), developmental problems (the most common example being Scheuermann's disease), osteoporosis with compression fractures of the vertebrae, or trauma."

[–]poesie 0 points1 point ago

No, it comes from tiny fractures in the spine caused by osteoporosis.

[–]wufoo2 2 points3 points ago

I am not even old enough to remember the term "grammar school."

That was Beaver Cleaver's time.

[–]Borbygoymi -1 points0 points ago

Not necessarily. I had reverse lumbar scholiosis, which means my back was too flat. And yes, you can get scholiosis from poor posture. It has to do with the strength of the muscles that support your spine.

So, relaxing in a positions shown in the image will likely result in lumbar or reverse lumbar scholiosis.

All in all not that big of a deal, common medical practice would have you believe that humans are based on a 90 degree fore/aft overall standing posture. In my personal opinion this is actually rarely the case.

[–]SkittlesForHair 31 points32 points ago

I used to have scoliosis. Now I have better posture than anybody because my spine has titanium rods screwed in it. :)

[–]Buttered_Penis 28 points29 points ago

Nice. Next step: Adamantium claws!

[–]Inorezyou 13 points14 points ago

Don't forget the Mithril Boots.

[–]Cynical_Walrus 11 points12 points ago

You did not get that reference!

[–]Inorezyou 8 points9 points ago

I thought I got it. You made me realize I didn't.

[–]Buttered_Penis 3 points4 points ago

Marvel's Wolverine has adamantium, a mythical metal, grafted to his bones. Adamantuim, according to the lore, is said to be the strongest metal in the universe.

You may already know this, but just in case you don't, Wolverine is a mutant capable of regenerating damages tissue and extending bone/adamantium claws from his hands.

Still, the mithril reference was cool At least you have some semblance of nerd lore. :-P

[–]giwoon 14 points15 points ago

and here i was thinking you guys were talking about runescape...

[–]booksAREfood 1 point2 points ago

Second strongest! I think? I remember randomly reading it during one of my random wikipedia sessions. The strongest is whatever Cap's shield is made of.

[–]Buttered_Penis 12 points13 points ago

Well Cap sucks.

tells kids not to do drugs

got superpowers from drugs

[–]shadowman42 1 point2 points ago

vibranium. Adamatium was created in an effort to create artificial vibranium

[–]GummiBearMagician 1 point2 points ago

Vibranium.

[–]thegunrun 0 points1 point ago

Next, Blink Dagger?

[–]Lurking_Grue 0 points1 point ago

I'll just cast magic missile.

[–]mythril98 0 points1 point ago

Mithril Boots... from Golden Sun?

[–]digitalife 1 point2 points ago

Just out of curiosity - are you completely unable to bend your spine now?

[–]jackalopexs20 5 points6 points ago

Not the guy in question, but I had a pretty severe case of scoliosis that pretty much barred me from bending properly, and the rods I was fitted with allowed me to become much more flexible. Unfortunately, I still can't limbo.

[–]SkittlesForHair 1 point2 points ago

Yeap. I can bend at the waist and I can move my neck around, but that's about it. People have tried putting one hand on my stomach and one on my upper back to bend it. They always think I'm lying for some reason.

[–]Supermook13 1 point2 points ago

And here I am thinking it was from applying generous amounts of dairy products to my penis! Now I'm free to churn away!

[–]Honeymaid 1 point2 points ago

I have scoliosis now :C

[–]Bipolarruledout 1 point2 points ago

I'm still waiting for the guidelines on ergonomic fapping.

[–]slumpsox 0 points1 point ago

I do this as well

[–]Kiltsoftly 105 points106 points ago

You mean like the fetal position?

[–]mardob 18 points19 points ago

Did the vikings do the same? Perhaps threw their legs over the oars while rowing? Or is this a new phenomena?

When we come back ...

[–]and_then__ 29 points30 points ago

You lived in that position for 9 months. It was the cosiest time of your life. Your body remembers.

[–]nimbleandlight 41 points42 points ago

Roughly accurate. A few years ago I took a picture of the way I sit while playing games. Comfy.

[–]cant_be_pun_seen 38 points39 points ago

judging by the pajama pants and the fact you are playing video games, Im going to go with a 4:00pm time stamp and you had not taken your shower yet.

source: all too familiar

[–]nimbleandlight 1 point2 points ago

I'm almost 100% certain this was taken on a snow day, so you are probably correct.

[–]RedditsmithIV 15 points16 points ago

Those look like some damn comfortable jammies

[–]KazROFL 5 points6 points ago

It's almost winter, here come the comfy clothes!

[–]I_FISTED_MY_GRANDMA 1 point2 points ago

Ooooh shit, i'm excited now. Time to hit da walmarts.

[–]shanoxilt -1 points0 points ago

[–]Praesens 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't mind getting in 'em.

[–]nimbleandlight 1 point2 points ago

They certainly are! Vermont Flannel Company.

[–]Jennysuewoaclue87 14 points15 points ago

This is me at work. I start with one leg tucked under me, the sitting Indian style, then knees up to my chest.

[–]_fortune 4 points5 points ago

I'm doing both right now... Right leg folded under me, left foot propped on right leg keeping my left knee up against my chest.

[–]Aluhut 1 point2 points ago

Same here with changing legs for many years now.

I hope it won't end up in knee problems one day ;)

[–]OutThisLife 0 points1 point ago

I'm doing this right now. Are you me?

[–]SmokinSickStylish 3 points4 points ago

Indian Style

Native Style

Aboriginal Style

¯\(⊙︿⊙)

[–]Phlexonance 0 points1 point ago

I sit with one leg tucked under me all the time and sometimes I slouch so much that I end up like the last panel in the comic. It's a pain to get up from that position though.

[–]victor47 0 points1 point ago

i'm repeatedly made fun of for this position at work. people think i'm trying to sleep or something. it really does occur subconsciously.

[–]scottg96 27 points28 points ago

Anyone have the source for this? It's a shame OP didn't give any credit at all...

EDIT: Well shit, I just reverse image searched it and all I ended up with was an original source linking to another imgur mirror of the same comic.

whatthefuck.jpg

[–]Tallain 8 points9 points ago

Maybe OP made it?

[–]Smokalotapotamus 2 points3 points ago

Possible, but statistically unlikely.

[–]medahman -1 points0 points ago

Because everything on reddit must be stolen.

[–]evilfishbunny 10 points11 points ago

Ha! I do this everyday of my life. This is awesome.

[–]jeremyfrankly 4 points5 points ago

Did you make this or is it from a webcomic?

[–]Andrebatman 1 point2 points ago

i sure hope reposting old links in 8 bit form becomes a thing.

[–]tzfx 9 points10 points ago

If anyone watches HotshotGG stream League of Legends, this is EXACTLY how that guy sits.

[–]enki1337 4 points5 points ago

Hotshot is L from Death Note.

[–]Elessar20 0 points1 point ago

Nah, he usually stops at picture 2 and I tend to go to pose #4... :D

[–]adrianmonk 2 points3 points ago

I used to do this at my desk in high school. In Chemistry, we had assigned seating, and I sat at the front of the class. My chemistry teacher would kind of pace back and forth across the front of the classroom as she lectured, and she was constantly tripping over my feet. It would turn into kind of slapstick comedy moment. She'd trip and regain her balance before falling over, then she'd good-naturedly scold me for doing it again.

[–]PolarBearIcePop 2 points3 points ago

oh my, i thought i was the only one....

[–]nothisispatrickeu 2 points3 points ago

nice try hotshotgg

[–]realfuzzhead 2 points3 points ago

I'm on stage 3 currently

[–]Mokinko 4 points5 points ago

I'm on stage 5. I would show it, but well, I am not really dressed......

[–]jessicatron 0 points1 point ago

Me too!

[–]Katomega 2 points3 points ago

Maybe you played to much Metroid as a kid...

[–]Fitzwah 0 points1 point ago

Looks like he's sporting some pixel-wood in panel 3, which makes panel 4 open to a lot of interpretation as to whats happening below desk-line.

[–]gigapixels 4 points5 points ago

That's his knee.

[–]Taboomurphy 2 points3 points ago

I'm surprised nobody created a computer chair to support "the curl" while still being able to use a computer.

[–]BullwinkleB 2 points3 points ago

I do this all the time, to the point where I finally realize I'm really uncomfortable. I want to know the brains reason for doing this, does it think the constant leaning back for long periods of time means we're trying to go to sleep or something?

Or maybe it's just slowly trying to get us off the chair and away from the computer...

[–]Mr_Wuffle 2 points3 points ago

I only see McPixel.

[–]nogswarth 1 point2 points ago

"MACPIXELLL!"

[–]chiropter 0 points1 point ago

body wat r u doing

[–]LaunguageFrogs 3 points4 points ago

body stahp

[–]electricmice 0 points1 point ago

i think it has something to do with the fact that your body is constantly sliding down the chair. i can't stop myself from subconsciously bracing my leg against the back of the desk. i also enjoy sitting my legs on the table like in op's pic too.

[–]Raneados 1 point2 points ago

Stolen idea?

Who came first?

[–]kasmackity 1 point2 points ago

That's Slim Goodbody. You mean THIS guy?

Mr. Boddy

[–]atdifan17 0 points1 point ago

I miss Code Monkeys

[–]apollo84 0 points1 point ago

i have never sat like this while on the computer, usually indian style but other then that i'm usually up.

[–]antimarkovnikov 0 points1 point ago

All you've really got to do is learn to type with your toe(s), assuming you have a laptop or don't want to move your keyboard to your lap or anything. It takes forever to type even a couple words and honestly doesn't work at all, but the feeling of knowing that you can curl up like that and pretend you can still use your computer with some functionality... it's incredible.

[–]toastyblanket 1 point2 points ago

Too much pressure on the hips and strain on the lower back. Stand up and go for a short walk. Your other option being to fold yourself in half.

[–]Downstroyer 0 points1 point ago

Just 5 months ago I had PRK Surgery (Similar to Lasik Surgery) done to my eyes with great success. I went from 20/80, to 20/40+. You have no idea how nice it is being able to lean back in your computer chair after 12 years of computer use and still read comfortably.

I have now adapted the position of stretching my feet out to the back of my desk. I have a wall behind me with just enough room for a perfect stretch. It's an amazing posistion! :D

[–]Canon_Goes_Boom 1 point2 points ago

seeing as you caught me in this exact process, have one big fucking upvote

[–]moyno85 -1 points0 points ago

Jack White always was a bit of a non-conformist.

[–]mr_spycrabs 0 points1 point ago

This is very relevent to me

[–]VikingOnABoat[!] 1 point2 points ago

I thought I was the only one.

[–]mjrpes 1 point2 points ago

I end up like this all the time at home. It's the lazy boy posture.... and studies seem to show it's better than straight vertical.

http://arstechnica.com/science/2006/11/6119/

[–]woollymammal 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it. How does he use the computer?

[–]scorpion347 1 point2 points ago

This is a repost. I'm not angry becuase as it happens it was the very first thing I ever saw on reddit. Good memory... bad habbit.

[–]xzzz 0 points1 point ago

ITT: Skinny short people.

As a bear-mode and above average height person I don't see how this is at all comfortable. I can't even fit on my chair sitting like this.

[–]Razoken 0 points1 point ago

I used to do that, but it got pretty annoying when it happened all the time.

Now I just seem to slowly slide off my seat.

[–]jossungood 0 points1 point ago

The Womb.

[–]varev 0 points1 point ago

L-shaped desk, lets my feet go up the side part of the desk while turning head slightly to be facing the monitor on the front, main desk.

[–]kukamunga 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this picture several times but never noticed the text in the third panel. I actually think I like it better without.

[–]williamyes 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit this is EXACTLY what I do.

[–]KamuiSeph 0 points1 point ago

I just laughed way too loud at work. Manager came up, saw the pic and started cackling like a maniac. Best pic ever.

[–]buttcheeky 1 point2 points ago

I'm not alone!

[–]d0k3n 0 points1 point ago

Too much computer time, you should swing some hours a week, you will gain your back strength back. ;)

[–]poorestcollegekid 1 point2 points ago

this is called the fetal position. it's natural because it's how we are in the womb...

[–]LordLittlefinger 0 points1 point ago

This got so irritating that I went ahead and solved this first world problem.

[–]TheBananaMonkey 0 points1 point ago

You may be interested in the Le Courbusier Chaise Longue.

One of the reasons why people still do console gaming.

[–]anonsequitur 0 points1 point ago

I call that position the ass cannon position, because i would annihilate everything in front of me if my ass were a cannon.

[–]ZombieSix 0 points1 point ago

OMG ME TOO

[–]fooby420 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone know how to fix this? I feel like its not really too good for my posture and my spine. Is there a special chair I can get?

[–]Pollydora 1 point2 points ago

[–]tomtritsio 0 points1 point ago

Sitting like this can give guys all sorts of prostate issues...at least in my experience. :( Every single day is an ongoing battle - sort of how I imagine recovering from smoking is like.

[–]Serpantking45 0 points1 point ago

And then you hate that your like that, but you can't seem to not do it. And it is way to ,iChat work to unball yourself.

[–]BurntTheToast 0 points1 point ago

Actually your natural position is in a ball. When you were in the womb for months your knees were tucked up to your chest. Your most comfortable and natural position is in some kind of ball.

[–]frazier6567 0 points1 point ago

Yes the natural position, a ball, otherwise known as the fetal position....

[–]Peanuthut 0 points1 point ago

The problem is that almost all office chairs have arms, and arms prevent you from sitting cross legged, which is a natural way of sitting.

[–]flydog2 0 points1 point ago

I have a similar problem when I'm going to sleep. I'm not comfortable until I'm all twisted up, and it causes such bad back issues during the day . . . yet I can't fall asleep unless I'm all contorted.

[–]MrKrowe 0 points1 point ago

Yep, I am guilty of this. You reach that ultimate level of comfy for like 30 minutes, annnnnnd then you can't reach the keyboard.

[–]skidoosh123 -1 points0 points ago

B4nny

[–]the_tch 0 points1 point ago

The most comfortable position for me is leaning over the back of my chair with my knees on the seat and legs stretched out. I hate sitting "normally" in a chair

[–]throwaway_cause_lazy 0 points1 point ago

I'm guilty of doing this lol. Unusual positions tend to be the most comfortable.

I find this quite amusing and am not sure why the plethora of downvotes. Maybe it's a bit overplayed. I still giggled.

[–]Noahflanagan24 1 point2 points ago

It happens to me on the couch with a leg rest too.

[–]toomchcaf -2 points-1 points ago

oh yeah that's so cool, that the one that i did before!
