Yep, my local PD had always been incredible. When I was a kid I used to play catch/football whatever in the town common, (large open field-ish area,) and the local cops would always come play with us for a while. They even used to get the department to buy hot dogs and soda for us from the stand at the local beach. It ruled, and it made a lasting impression that has hung with me, that just because some cops are dicks doesn't mean they all are.

That might well be the case, and I can understand that, but the way this police officer said it sounded like 'we don't really care about shit like this,' and that impression still stands 15 years later. When I see a cop, I feel like I felt that one time I made the trip to the station. When a cop told me I couldn't ride my skateboard somewhere, I thought 'you don't care about my shit, I'm not going to take you seriously.' Nothing rational about it, but that's how it worked and still works.

Rationally I know that all cops aren't insensitive assholes. But because of this one horrendous experience I associate the sight of the uniform with overwhelming feelings of 'these guys let me down when I needed them, they are useless and I don't give a fuck about them.'

That's the drawback of a uniform, if one guy fucks up, all will experience the repercussions. Cops should be aware of that. I think they have made a lot of these 'citizens that don't show respect' themselves.

But certain races don't have state-mandated power over you. A white person can't just arrest a black person on the street (or vice versa). So you have to understand there is an added level of fear.

A lot of the cops in my area have nothing to do. I know some of them personally- some are good people, some are good people and also alcoholics, some are just really grumpy- but there are others who are just downright sadists, and everyone knows about them. One even got a nickname (that I forget) because he was famous for being a mysogynist and making women cry when he pulled them over. One lady had her car totaled by some asshole who ran a red light and this cop yelled at her, blaming her and degrading her until she caved and said she may have made a mistake. (I think she later filed a report, because it was just bullying and harassment- it was awful and she came to my mother and I sobbing afterwards).

I know that cops are people- but that means that, like people, they are going to be both good and bad. And the bad ones are infinitely more scary because of the power and authority they hold.

Is it a big police-force? Cops from smaller town are usually more laid back than those who have to deal with big-city crime.

I agree on "not all cops are dicks". I have had both pleasant as unpleasant encounters with police. But I'm still somewhat biased and will usually think the worst of them unless I am proven otherwise by said cop. Not something I'm proud of, but i'ld rather be fucked over by someone I suspected to be a dick, than being fucked over by someone who I suspected to be one of the good ones.
