God damn it buffalo wild wings

[–]dickdrizzle 2 points3 points ago

But I don't wanna go back to work!!

[–]bobovski 66 points67 points ago

Why was he throwing his hat?

Edit: I mean in the end zone.

[–]jman1865 84 points85 points ago

The 2 main reasons refs throw their hats:

  1. Throwing it to mark a second penalty after he has thrown his penalty flag.

  2. To mark that he has witnessed a player leaving the field, marking a potential illegal touching penalty if that player is the first one to touch the ball that is thrown or kicked toward them.

[–]Billybones116 107 points108 points ago

Neither of which happened, so there was no fucking reason to throw the hat.

[–]owenstumor 96 points97 points ago

Didn't you ever just want to, like, throw your hat for no good reason? Me neither.

[–]BeFuckingPolite 127 points128 points ago

FUCK THIS HAT. I AM DONE WITH THIS HAT.

[–]adalonus 25 points26 points ago

Intentional Grounding of the Hat. 5 Upvotes.

[–]Zeppelanoid 9 points10 points ago

This is my hat. This is totally my hat now.

[–]DoogieBrowser 5 points6 points ago

Have you been drinking green tea all day?

[–]Zeppelanoid 4 points5 points ago

Cool beans.

[–]tantalicatom689 0 points1 point ago

I'VE BEEN DRINKING GREEN TEA ALL GODDAMN DAY!

[–]nomofica 0 points1 point ago

This is my hat. There are many like it but this one is mine.

[–]Wiskie 12 points13 points ago

I actually had a knife pulled on me once because I threw a hat (baseball cap) and the visor part actually hit a dude directly in the eye on accident.

I know it doesn't mean anything to say this is a true story, but it is.

Hats are some serious shit.

[–]DanDotOrg 3 points4 points ago

DON'T YOU HATE PANTS?

[–]owenstumor 1 point2 points ago

I dig my pants. It's other people's pants i have a problem with.

They're too hard to get off. Get it?

[–]idosillythings 1 point2 points ago

I did...after tonights game. Steeler Nation whoop whoo-ah screw it!

[–]owenstumor 0 points1 point ago

Just hold me...

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

I've been known to throw my hat because A.) as a sort of parody of anger (only works in certain circumstances with people who know me well), and B.) after a really hot woman walks by. Both are meant to be humorous however, and the hat always goes straight to the ground, directly at my feet. Just sayin'.

[–]owenstumor 0 points1 point ago

As opposed tooo ... at her crotch, let's say?

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

You either get it or you don't. Either way, it's not my problem. Deal with it.

[–]owenstumor 0 points1 point ago

You've got a "Tough Love" approach that we can all appreciate....

[–]nandeEbisu 0 points1 point ago

He wants to mark that potential illegal touching so he remember exactly where.

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

What's the mark that you touch in order to have your mom come and pick you up?

[–]heartman74 7 points8 points ago

The player that went out of bounds was on the opposite side of the field.

[–]jman1865 8 points9 points ago

Calm down - I understand you have a vested interest in this play (by your flair), but I was simply answering a question. Besides, I haven't seen this play, aside from the .gif posted.

I'm too busy lamenting the fact that my team isn't getting to lord their championship over their competition on the field of play.

[–]Billybones116 31 points32 points ago

I wasn't yelling at you. I was yelling at the refs.

[–]happywaffle 11 points12 points ago

So you seriously think the ref just randomly decided to throw his hat into the end zone for no reason whatsoever in the middle of a play?

[–]Billybones116 2 points3 points ago

Some of these replacement refs have done far worse.

[–]canucksoul -4 points-3 points ago

Yes.

[–]PunTasTick 8 points9 points ago

I am sure stepping on hats means that you left the field (after all he is stepping on the hat and not on the field), so that's probably why he threw the hat.

[–]MAJORPOOPY 0 points1 point ago

I believe they also have a bean bag to mark the spot of the ball. Idk if they use that for secondary penalties though.

[–]Trackpad94 1 point2 points ago

They carry fumble beanies, as well.

[–]stwentz 12 points13 points ago

Didn't see the play but it is often done if he already threw his only penalty flag.

[–]bobovski 2 points3 points ago

I missed the play, too, but I've never seen a hat thrown in the end zone. (Edited my previous comment to ask the question I really meant.)

[–]why_so_Sirius 4 points5 points ago

He had money on Ogletree becoming injured during the course of the game. It's the only logical option.

[–]neil_ 6 points7 points ago

The refs sometimes throw their hats to mark a position on the field if they need to remember it or something like that.

[–]bobovski 12 points13 points ago

Yeah, you're right, but isn't it strange to do so in the end zone?

[–]TerranRepublic 2 points3 points ago

Not if it was to mark where the ball hit (kickoff). Refs generally mark it regardless.

[–]bobovski 0 points1 point ago

I didn't see the play, was that the case here?

[–]bonanzington 4 points5 points ago

this was not the case he was a receiver trying to get open in the end zone, he slipped on the hat and it resulted in him not being in position to catch the ball (which was thrown to him, though the gif doesn't show it)

[–]TerranRepublic 0 points1 point ago

I didn't either, sorry, I was just giving the only scenario I could think of in regards to your comment.

[–]ItzInMyNature 3 points4 points ago

Another Dallas receiver went out of bounds while running his route. The ref threw his hat to signal that. The ref just happened to throw it in this receivers route. Refs are supposed to throw their hat down to show that a player runs out and may touch the ball illegally. He just shouldn't have thrown it that far.

[–]neil_ 1 point2 points ago

Oh, yeah. That's pretty weird.

[–]StrngBrew 18 points19 points ago

"narrowly avoids injury" is a little presumptive.

But yeah, pretty stupid by the ref there.

[–]DirtyBucketz 52 points53 points ago

[–]P0llyPrissyPants 26 points27 points ago

Reminded me of this: http://i.imgur.com/Tic8N.gif

[–]cuda1337 5 points6 points ago

I've seen that a million times, but thank you. It is awesome.

[–]fentooooon 3 points4 points ago

Now I want somebody to replace the hat with a sliding tray

[–]habeasporpoise 2 points3 points ago

You forgot the note at the end when he recovers from spinning out...

[–]AwesomeSauce574 13 points14 points ago

Even though the cowboys won, this would have probably gave them another touchdown

[–]sleepybandit 31 points32 points ago

And me some fantasy points, which is the real travesty here.

[–]jmorlin -2 points-1 points ago

Same except he was riding my bench.

[–]BigBazookaTooth 0 points1 point ago

And allowed the Cowboys to beat the spread. Didn't cost me money, but maybe someone. Honestly the Cowboys didn't play 9 points better than the Bucs anyway.

[–]sel227 122 points123 points ago

Orlando Brown nearly lost his eyesight because a regular ref threw a flag that hit him in the eye. This stuff happens to the regulars too.

[–]EroticCakes 6 points7 points ago

They used to teach refs to throw flags at the spot of the penalty. For whatever reason that same year Orlando Brown got tagged, a few kids in high-school had that happen to them too (I was present for one), and the NCAA and NFL refs changed policies to toss flags up instead of at the point of the foul.

What really sucks about this is that the call for IR is either on the other side of the field, or this referee is too slow to be doing his job. Either way, there's absolutely no need to put a foreign object into the field of play like that, and I do know that regulars wouldn't be making this kind of mistake.

The biggest difference isn't that refs are making mistakes... it's the kind of mistakes these guys make. They spot the ball poorly because they can't get into position to see where guys are truly down, and aren't used to the speed of skill players and the shit they pull to draw cheap flags.

[–]patsmad 0 points1 point ago

To point out: the call was to my knowledge on the other side of the field.

[–]Its_Mr_Pants 71 points72 points ago

In YEARS of regular officiating, that happened once.

In 3 weeks of sub officiating, it has also happened once.

[–]Aarmed 1 point2 points ago

Looks like he wasn't anywhere near being injured.

[–]IAMA_Madmartigan -2 points-1 points ago

I understand your point, but he was throwing the flag for a reason..why on earth was this guy throwing his hat right then???

[–]The_Texican 14 points15 points ago

they either throw their hat because someone has gone out of bounds or they have already thrown their other flag.

I can't recall on the replay if Ogletree had stepped out of bounds.

[–]MasterCronus 8 points9 points ago

But they usually drop it, they don't throw it into the path of a receiver.

[–]Hammburglar 0 points1 point ago

Yeah Ogletree did run out of bounds, but you're correct. They drop their hat when they run out. Not toss it on the field. It happened again later in the same game but the ref threw it correctly, by his feet.

[–]A_Monocle_For_Sauron 3 points4 points ago

It could have been a different receiver and Ogletree happened to be directly between that WR and the ref.

[–]heartman74 5 points6 points ago

The player that went out of bounds was on the opposite side of the field.

[–]manton11 0 points1 point ago

Though I don't think you throw your hat at the receiver that went out haha.. The ref did believe Ogletree went out, but the replay showed otherwise.

[–]janrahan 5 points6 points ago

While I understand that they sometimes throw their hats, I think the issue is that the ref should not have thrown it into the ENDZONE while their was a player approaching.

[–]Hugo_Hackenbush 8 points9 points ago

My first thought was that a guy could blow out his knee on something like that. But then I realized he was perfectly safe. The league would never jeopardize the safety of its players by putting subpar officials on the field.

[–]Matt_Cryan 33 points34 points ago

It's ok, its only a Cowboy.

[–]SammyDTX 22 points23 points ago

The Cowboy that happened to score 2 TDs and caught for 120 yards against your Giants.

[–]ProfProphet713 23 points24 points ago

THEREFORE THE COWBOYS ARE THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE WORLD AND AMERICA'S TEAM!!!!

[–]aperturo 3 points4 points ago

Makes sense...either the Cowboys players are worthless human beings or the team is the best on Earth. Couldn't be be anywhere in the middle.

[–]SammyDTX 6 points7 points ago

As a Cowboys fan, I can concur. We play as a Super Bowl caliber team one week, then the next we're the worst team in the NFL. Not really any middle ground.

[–]ProfProphet713 5 points6 points ago

According to Cowboys fans, correct.

[–]aperturo 0 points1 point ago

touché

[–]commongiga 0 points1 point ago

You must be new to sports.

[–]aperturo 0 points1 point ago

Don't post much, lurk occasionally. Perhaps you are right.

[–]foofiejnooner 41 points42 points ago

Great sensationalist title. Like a great white almost ate him while he was done.

[–]gob126 7 points8 points ago

He very easily could have injured himself. Your foot is not designed to slip out from underneath your leg.

[–]fabritzio 1 point2 points ago

And those refs tried their hardest to make the 49ers win, but to no avail.

[–]Dissidentt 0 points1 point ago

Meanwhile, the regular refs would have made the thrown game imperceptible.

[–]bigmenace 2 points3 points ago

As much as Im annoyed by the ref. Im also kind of amazed at how accurate he is

[–]Nihil1 3 points4 points ago

The commentator of the game said refs throw their hat to mark that a player stepped out of bounds, hence he is not allowed to participate in the play...this guy was clearly not stepping out of bounds...is not participating in the play either...I guess the ref simply didn't like him.

[–]bluexy 15 points16 points ago

He arguably missed a touchdown pass because he slipped as the ball was thrown to him... that's pretty significant participation.

[–]tandembandit 3 points4 points ago

Someone said in another thread that the ref may have been trying to signal stepping out on the opposite side of the field, but I don't think he should be throwing his hat for a play across the field from him.

[–]smoothchaos 0 points1 point ago

article???

[–]Erock2 0 points1 point ago

Ouch.

[–]ak11 0 points1 point ago

Why did the ref throw his hat in the first place?

[–]kowen 0 points1 point ago

Narrowly avoids injury? You should write for Yahoo sports news. Article is up about it right now. Highly doubt he was in any danger though.

[–]SilverLion -1 points0 points ago

Guy almost plays football, narrowly avoids injury.
