That narrator makes me want to punch him. "Using both the ice and the water the polar-bear is able to hunt in three dimensions" REALLY????

[–]FromTheId 78 points79 points ago

What's wrong with that?
Terrestrially we're stuck with the 2-dimensional plane of the ground we run on. With water the bear can move and attack in three dimensions. Similarly, an eagle is a 3-dimensional hunter.

EDIT: But yeah, his voice makes me want to use both the ice and water to murder him in three dimensions.

[–]sworeiwouldntjoin 5 points6 points ago

So then, a cat is a 3 dimensional hunter as well, since it can make use of trees and other obstacles to get above or below its prey?

[–]Ftumsh 6 points7 points ago

To an extent, but only where props are available. The polar bear in the water is 3D all the time.

And that's why you need to look out.

[–]sworeiwouldntjoin 6 points7 points ago

But he's only a 3d hunter where water is available, or not blocked by icebergs etc. Just like a cat is only a 3d hunter where forests/buildings etc. are. And an eagle is only a 3d hunter where there's room to fly. And each of them only within a certain band (Cat = not above the altitude of the trees, polar bear = not below a couple hundred feet at maximum, eagle = not above the altitude it can fly at), so each of them is a limited 3d hunter, not fully 3d. Come to think of it, a dog is a limited 3d hunter as well. They can jump up a good 5 feet, so they have the horizontal plane, plus 5 feet of vertical space. That's 3 dimensions.

[–]White_Luigi 8 points9 points ago

Sure, and that's why they're good hunters.

[–]FromTheId -2 points-1 points ago

Yep.

[–]acunningusername 12 points13 points ago

He is intelligent, but not experienced. His pattern indicates two-dimensional thinking.

[–]ghostface134 6 points7 points ago

Khan: Surely, I have made my meaning plain. . . . and when I swing around, I mean to deprive you of your life.

[–]no_were_musicians 35 points36 points ago

Sometimes the bear can use his special bear powers and stalk the seal through the 4th dimension.

[–]Pharose 4 points5 points ago

Bears aren't unique in their ability to traverse the 4th dimension as we all can perceive the passage of time. As intelligent beings of instinct and anticipation it may be argued that we can estimate a perspective out in the 5th and 6th dimension, but it is only that: a guess.

[–]AtlasAnimated 1 point2 points ago

A puzzle even Stephen Hawking couldn't figure out.

[–]pooinmyloo 9 points10 points ago

Because it's not David Attenborough, as it should be. Why any channel would choose another persons voice over Mr Atenborough I do not now. I'm not sure if that's the case with this film, but I think it's a BBC Planet Earth doc, which was originally narrated by him.

Edit: One of my favourite Attenborough vids:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndMKTnSRsKM Saying Boo to a shitting sloth.

[–]harlows_monkeys 0 points1 point ago

If the bear could only use the ice, it's hunting could be described using only 2 dimensions. Essentially there is an isomorphism between the bear's hunting space and points on a 2 dimension manifold (that happens to be embedded in a 3 dimensional space), which justifies the narrator considering the ice-only hunting space to be 2 dimensional.

When hunting using both the ice and the water the bear's hunting space is no longer isomorphic to a 2 dimensional manifold.

[–]redonculous 1 point2 points ago

It's better with Dr. Who narrating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0DCOTaZgtA#t=100s

[–]vincentkun -1 points0 points ago

That seems about right, the polar bear can hunt things that go below water and things that are above water(like in ice or earth), he can also move in 2D whilst on the ground.

Compare this to animals like say cats who can only hunt in 2D on a plane surface.

[–]finallymadeanaccount 0 points1 point ago

So ... he's stuck in time?

[–]AvoidanceAddict 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I'd say it's just poorly worded. I would've gone with "the polar bear hunts using three dimensions." Tones it down a bit as if to say "Check out this crafty bear" rather than "Look at this bear, this bear is amazing!"

[–]piku17 4 points5 points ago

so the polar bear dies of hunger...

[–]hinduguru 5 points6 points ago

Definitely expected a NSFW picture of a seal.

[–]Qwirk 2 points3 points ago

The polar bear was not so lucky and didn't get a meal. :(

[–]IknowIhaveaproblem 2 points3 points ago

..Who the fuck is narrating this?

[–]Stankia 1 point2 points ago

But the bear went home hungry.

[–]iamdanhi 1 point2 points ago

On Frozen Planet. Same situation except seal is being circled by killer whales. One of them eventually grabs it by the tail and you just see the seal slowly slide off the ice into the water with the saddest face ever.

Of all the horrible stuff I've seen on the internet, a fucking seal on Frozen Planet almost makes me cry.

Video if anyone wants to watch.

[–]OriginalUsername1 0 points1 point ago

Neat but sad.

[–]computergroove 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck did you know how to find this video from this gif?

[–]Ozymandias12 0 points1 point ago

Why the hell is that narrated by Michael Jackson?

[–]finallymadeanaccount 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was Cleveland.

[–]hungryandslepy 1 point2 points ago

made me think of Herbert

[–]vaporiz 0 points1 point ago

But now that polar bear cannot find another meal and her cubs will die of starvation.

[–]StereotypeHype 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap! Not what I was expecting to see lol...thank you for sharing!

[–]ForeverAllOne 21 points22 points ago

every week, good job op.

[–]Noisyfan66 10 points11 points ago

I love this .gif. I was in my living room around 2am one night with the TV on Animal Planet/Discovery Channel(?) and watched this happen during the episode.. I re-winded it several times and could not stop laughing!

[–]grimguitar 18 points19 points ago

I spent the longest time wondering how the seal would make the soon face. I then shat bricks.

[–]lethargicwalrus 5 points6 points ago

This is ridiculous... if you're going to constantly repost something, please do it in 9gag, you'll find others just like you.

Jesus Christ, guys. Be fucking original. Even with just the titles.

[–]LastRedCoat 20 points21 points ago

I see you're getting a few down votes, maybe since there are so many comments just like yours the people are heeding your advice?

[–]ribald86 179 points180 points ago

I hope this helps:

reddiquette

Please don't:

  • Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.

[–]AFatDarthVader 20 points21 points ago

Check the posters of the past posts. OP (robotnip) has reposted this multiple times himself.

[–]lost_cosmonaut 22 points23 points ago

Anyone can edit reddiquette. Your quote wasn't an original tenant. Also, those are courtesy guidelines, not rules.

We should complain when we see fit.

[–]acog 42 points43 points ago

The thing is, the line about "Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote" should be sufficient. If something is posted, even for the 100th time, and enough people haven't seen it, it'll get upvotes. If they have, they'll either ignore or downvote it.

Feel free to complain but I believe that voting is sufficient.

[–]moogoesthecat 3 points4 points ago

You're arguing ethicality versus legality.

[–]acog 0 points1 point ago

Am I? I suppose it could be interpreted that way, but in my case I don't care about the motives of the reposter at all. I just care about what damage reposts do; my assertion is that the damage is basically zero. People mainly care about reposts when they get a huge number of upvotes and get to the front page -- but the very fact that they got to the front page means that the repost was new to a huge number of people!

[–]Somethin_nice_for_ya 1 point2 points ago

Complainers remind me of hipsters.

[–]tha_dood 9 points10 points ago

Agreed. If everyone's tired of it, it won't be upvoted. People who complain are the people that want the world to act as they want it to.

[–]Menospan 3 points4 points ago

complain all you want. don't expect it to do anything though

[–]ribald86 0 points1 point ago

If not for the repost I wouldn't have seen this content.

Reddiquette is an informal expression of the values of many redditors, as written by redditors themselves. Please abide by it the best you can.

Please abide harder.

Thanks!

-A redditor

[–]GamerAsh -1 points0 points ago

He didn't even state it was the rules. I've never seen this image before, and got a brief laugh out of it, so I upvoted it. Why not downvote rather than complain? Damn, why didn't I just downvote your comment instead of complaining.

[–]Lilyo 7 points8 points ago

Shh, the hate train is already rolling!

[–]finallymadeanaccount 0 points1 point ago

Choo Choo, mothefucker!

[–]AdmiralSkippy 2 points3 points ago

Two of them were posted an hour before this one. That's uncalled for reposting. I can accept anything over a week personally, unless the person is claiming it's their content, which is never acceptable.

[–]neagrosk 1 point2 points ago

It's fine for something posted 4-6 times but 10+ times is a bit much even for such a gif

[–]EternalRaine323 0 points1 point ago

I totally agree with you. The entire reason things become popular on here, or the Internet in general, is because of reposts. Reposts ensure people who haven't seen it get to see it.

[–]I_ate_a_milkshake -1 points0 points ago

I'm tired of the whiners. "let's save Reddit by making sure everything is only posted once!"

piss off, you're not saving anything.

[–]bag-o-tricks -2 points-1 points ago

Thank you. I've been on Reddit for a few years now and I never saw it.

Newsflash!...people join Reddit every day and even the ones that have been here a while haven't seen every post. Do all these neckbeards really think something is entertaining only once? I suppose it's a sort of personal victory when they can say something has been posted before. I think it comes off as elitist and condescending. It's easier to ignore or just downvote if it makes them feel better.

[–]Aztecius -1 points0 points ago

Chances are though, everyone has seen this post.

[–]ribald86 -1 points0 points ago

I haven't seen it.

[–]I_cant_stop 15 points16 points ago

I've never seen it before and was very happy he posted it.

[–]Noveto 8 points9 points ago

Well, It was the first time I've seen it. And it made me laugh.

[–]vinnie16 1 point2 points ago

I haven't seen it.

[–]Lilyo 0 points1 point ago

"2,167 up votes" that's over 2,000 people who have never seen this image before or saw it and wanted to upvote it regardless of it being a repost. You can't say something is a repost just because you saw it. I never saw this before. Am I supposed to feel bad for upvoting it because you and other people saw it before? There's tens of millions of users on Reddit and every front page post only gets about 1-5 million views, if even.

[–]ACSlater 0 points1 point ago

Am I supposed to feel bad for upvoting it because you and other people saw it before?

No but you should be able to understand the animosity that comes from having to see the same shit on the front page every couple of weeks. It's just annoying.

[–]Eist 0 points1 point ago

I think that many people will just up-vote this image (and other highly reposted ones) every single time they see it.

Also, the votes are fudged. Less people have up-voted and down-voted this than the count indicates.

[–]Lilyo -2 points-1 points ago

I'm pretty sure it's only the downvotes that are fudged in order to keep the thread on a place on the front page relative to other posts.

[–]Eist 1 point2 points ago

No.

[–]Lilyo -2 points-1 points ago

ooooo

[–]Eist 0 points1 point ago

Dunno who down-voted you. It was a legitimate response :)

[–]Lilyo -1 points0 points ago

[–]Eist 0 points1 point ago

She seems nice.

[–]beanso -2 points-1 points ago

He didn't say it was a repost "just because he saw it". He said it was a repost because he has links of all the times it's been posted before.

I think it's pretty definitively a repost.

[–]Lilyo 1 point2 points ago

It's a repost to those who've seen the previous post... How would something I've never seen before be a repost to me and why would I care if you've seen it before? Should the content of the site be dictated by what a fraction of the users see? Upvotes speak for themselves. It's great if you've seen it, but don't come complain about it as if you have a say in what people should be upvoting. I hate this mindset reddit has over reposts.

[–]beanso 0 points1 point ago

Whether you recognize it as a repost or not, it remains a repost.

It was posted to reddit once and then posted again (and again, and again...) - that's the definition of a repost.

[–]Cndymountain 0 points1 point ago

That is has been posted on reddit several times doesn't bother me. But that the same person has posted it several times does...

[–]arbitration_man 1 point2 points ago

I hate this bot more than reposts to be honest.

[–]Renson 9 points10 points ago

Um, it's not a bot

[–]arbitration_man 6 points7 points ago

Then that makes it even worse.

[–]Renson -1 points0 points ago

Why is that?

[–]Eist 4 points5 points ago

Because he likes robots more than people.

[–]Slunky 0 points1 point ago

Find plenty of others just like them here too. You say that like Reddit isn't absolutely full of reposts.

Apple users are retards. Apple users believe that they are better than you are because they pay so much for a shitty computer to be shiny with an apple logo on it, but what they don't know is that Macs were originally (and are still today) made purely for watching gay porn. People who subscribe to Apple's corporate philosophy often espouse the notion that Apple products are somehow inherently more liberal than other things built out of metal and silicon. While this is true for the special case of Ann Coulter, Apple users are in all other cases simply the delusional but willing victims of trendy advertising, which makes expensive computers made by communists appear to be a counter-culture political statement.

Apple users are simply fucktards who will believe anything they see in a commercial, as long as it agrees with the knee-jerk opinions they have already formed from other advertisements. In the final analysis, Apple users are helpless slaves irrevocably wed to the mediated and hyper-hedonistic run away freight train of industrial society; thanks to iPods built with alien mind control technology they are unable to conceive existence outside of music, video, images, and Crapps.

It is these legions of iPod wearing zombies with their thick black framed glasses and trendy shiny hair who are the Storm-Troopers of the "Great-Beast". See, Protocols of the Elders of Macintosh. College and university students and elitists that are taking or have taken business and arts degrees can be found with a Mac which provides them that much needed inferior computing flexibility for their ultimately useless and gay degrees and find that their shitty Mac will contribute most to their student debts.

[–]Finrod_Pallanen 1 point2 points ago

an example of a photographer interfering with nature

[–]sworeiwouldntjoin 1 point2 points ago

Humans interfere with nature by existing. Unless you consider homo sapiens as just another species, in which case they don't interfere with nature no matter what they do to any greater extent than every other thing in the universe.

You step on grass, you're interfering with nature. You decide not to walk on grass and walk on concrete instead, you're walking on something that displaced grass (which displaced a native species and so on...).

You breathe air? That directly contributes to global warming, in its own small way. Have children, thus increasing the population, and causing more schools to need to be built or maintained, which requires more resources that must be harvested from nature? You guessed it, you're interfering with nature.

Fact of the matter is, you owning a computer contributes vastly more to the destruction of nature and the natural order of things than that random photographer taking a picture of a seal. Or wearing clothes. From a naturalistic standpoint, you should be exposed to the environment, mosquitoes should feast on you because you are their prey.

You could take the far viewpoint, and say that as a species that lives on this planet, it's natural that you should have some impact. A lion evolves teeth, and so eats a gazelle. It's natural, because he evolved that way. Similarly, homo sapiens evolved heavily in their cerebrum. It's natural that we should wear clothing, since we have the capacity to invent it, and it solves a problem for us (keeps us from freezing to death and such). As another species on this planet, everything we do is following the natural and logical course of our evolution. If you set fire to a pile of wood, you would consider it natural that it burns. If you put a lion in with a bunch of puppies, you could expect it to eat them. It wouldn't be at fault for doing that, it's reacting to its environment in a predictable and natural way.

Similarly, humans are in a place with a certain number of natural resources. They're following the logical path before them, which is to consume resources and reproduce. As a species, our motivation is to continue existing as a species. This means we eat things that can serve as food to us, wear things that can serve as clothes to us, make things that can serve as weapons (offensive or defensive) to us, and so on. If a monkey gained the capacity to use weapons to hunt, it would. Analyzing the environmental impact of hunting would come second to ensuring its own survival, even at the cost of other species. If a monkey learned how to domesticate and raise chickens for food, it would likely do that as well. Similar to ants farming aphids.

Humans would react in the same way, presented with the same circumstances. When we see a movie like Independence Day, we don't care if the missiles we're firing in our defense are likely to harm the wildlife with their emissions. We don't have space to consider all of the potential impacts a nuke would have on the lives of say, some fruit flies. That's because our first concern is ensuring our survival as a species. Remember, the aliens wanted our resources. They likely would have left the rest of the food chain in tact, and just eliminated the dominant species, (us). But we fought like we didn't care what happened to the random animals and plants who were effected by the fallout from our war, because fundamentally, we will always be our first priority.

So don't try and pick and choose your causes. Figure out what you actually believe, and stick to it. This 'the photographer is distracting the seal' bullshit isn't the real problem at all. If you want to fix the problems being created by your continuing existence, do that. Otherwise, shut up and eat your cheeseburger.
