Some people may point out that it appears to fly out of the water above the horizon. Actually, it is getting so big and so far away that the rest of the ocean exists in unloaded chunks. However, because the boat is so big, it remains loaded in client. Therefore, it really is just getting bigger and farther away.

then why can we see the underside? Are you implying that there is curvature to the minecraft world, thus rendering the underside of objects visible at incredibly far distances? This must be the only logical solution. Therefor the minecraft world is round and that's why there's no farlands any more. QED.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess that you learned about Lapfox from either Race For Wool 1 or Ultra Hardcore. When I look all the way back, I'm pretty sure the only reason Lapfox was used in UHC was because Coestar put Red 120 in the background of his RFW1 preview video, and other people like me listened to the rest of the music and used it in other settings such as UHC since there's no copyright issues.

I recorded this myself. It's probably a bug in the snapshot (12w38a). Not sure if it can be reproduced this way, but here's what I did:

  • align boat directly next to a strip of land and get out
  • exit to menu
  • reload the world and observe

Getting into the boat after it levitates brings it down to water level, so no flying contraptions yet!
