Unless you have an iDevice there is really no need to have iTunes on a PC. There are many good alternatives and iTunes is made artificially slower on PCs.

EDIT: Ok the artificially made slower bit has not been confirmed to be true, however it is still the opinion of myself and others

Dunno about the rest but Quicktime is horribly, horribly optimized for Windows. iTunes requires it to view any video content.

Well I think it's pretty well known that iTunes is made slower on PCs to make Macs look good in comparison (maybe not, that's my assumption). I have a pretty good 1 year old PC, (Intel i7 Quad Core 3.8GHz chip and an SSD), but even with iTunes installed on my SSD it takes at least 5 seconds to boot up. I know 5 seconds is hardly anything but when everything else is pretty much instant there is no reason why it should be slow, especially when my friend's mid range Mac from 3 years ago takes <1 second to open iTunes with the latest version. It just doesn't make sense.

Running ubuntu on my personal laptop, I have no good way of downloading podcasts (please tell me I am wrong, I would love to not have to use iTunes) so I have to use my windows 7 work laptop for that. I am from the Uk and living in peru. The lack of radio4 out here scares me.

It doesn't do much for the artist, which is really lame. I'd like to have my favorite artists able to keep making music. Check out this article that shows the difference you earn between Spotify and iTunes.

But apparently on reddit, not liking Spotify is a crime...

That article icanarejesus linked clearly pointed out, at least in the case highlighted, that the artist made $46,477.77 through iTunes compared to $281.87 through Spotify.

So obviously iTunes does pay much, much better than Spotify.

Not everyone has the time or means to "go to shows". Maybe they don't live in a location that gets shows near them. Maybe they're like me and say to themselves "well, that concert would be fun, but I have to work at 8 in the morning so I'll pass."

That said, I love Spotify. Mostly due to the amazing value. Which obviously turns into less profits for the artists unfortunately.

I love the concept of Spotify, and I was one of the US beta users, but I just wish it did more. And bonix, I do go to shows and buy merch. But if I'm the only one doing it then it doesn't matter, does it? Other people need to actually support the artists they like.

Sigh... sadly I have to use iTunes since i have an iPod. I can't find an alternative really since Spotify doesn't work for my country. I'm going depression-mode whenever I have to use iTunes. Any alternatives to iTunes would be appreciated really.:/

There are plenty of viable options. Jaangle, Winamp, and Songbird to just name a few. They all have the option to connect a device. Maybe check them out. I personally use Jaangle which is pretty nice.

I feel like I am beating a dead horse here, but foobar2k is far superior, won't nag you with updates, and is super customizable. You can even use it to sync to an iPod.

As much as I DESPISE iTunes, it's basically essential for me having both an iPad3 and iPhone 4s. It really is awful on PC. I watch my GF use it on her iMac all the time and does run A LOT better, even though I have a substantially more powerful PC.

The newest versions in my opinion have actually been the most stable to date.

I can sync my phone and edit my music library simultaneously, free of lag or freezes, which for iTunes is quite an achievement.

People still use iTunes if:

  1. they own a Mac, since it runs much better on Mac than PC

  2. they own a iPhone/iPod/iPad/whatever in order to sync music/movies

  3. they haven't heard about Google music or Spotify

Until recently, a Facebook account was mandatory to setup Spotify; a barrier for me and most of my friends. Still, I use NetShade to access Pandora(Pro) outside the U.S. and I still prefer Pandora over iTunes' Genius to discover new music.

Based on the current track playing, the genius feature can be used either to make a consistent playlist from your existing music, or it finds similar music from the store. Both features work well, although I often find Pandora's results more interesting.

This is why I deleted itunes. There must have been 4-5 updates every week. I think these were simply pc scan data that was sent back so apple would know what I have on my machine. Besides, theres several other apps that are better.

The folks at apple could either license the Chrome update procedure or invent something similar themselves if they wished it, but no. 60MB slow download every other week. Although Apple employees are finding it hard to get to work after iOS 6 came out, so maybe they have an excuse.

I've got no reason to install iTunes on my computer, and I am keeping that way. My wife recently asked me to update her phone to the newer iOS. I sat for a moment and contemplated how best to do this without installing iTunes as the version she was running didn't support OTA updates. So I spun up a Windows VM in my VMware server, connected her phone to the USB port and assigned it to the VM, installed iTunes and performed the update. Upon completion I deleted the VM.

True story.
