I was gonna make a dumb Dolemite reference, but instead, I just have to know, who the hell mows a mountain?

[–]ZuFFuLuZ 27 points28 points ago

Farmers probably. Cows need food in the winter and stuff.

[–]Sarkos 34 points35 points ago

The Dolomites... where cow-tipping is the most dangerous game.

[–]GuantanaMo 5 points6 points ago

No, there's enough grass in the valleys. As far as I know the mountains are mowed for ecological reasons, if they'd leave it alone the slopes would loose their stability and the area would become too dangerous for those who live beneath the slope. The EU has programs to aid the farmers in the mountains because everything you can't mow with machines is a financial burden to them.

[–]loliwearhats 0 points1 point ago

How does that work? it would seem to me that reducing the amount of grass on a slope would lead to less root growth and less stabilized slopes

[–]HydrogenHydroxide 1 point2 points ago

I think it's because of avalanches, if I remember correctly avalanches start more likely when the weight of the snow is pressing down the long grass creating a slippery downward slope.

[–]GuantanaMo 0 points1 point ago

Don't know how exactly this works, but I think the shorter, dense grass does helps avoiding erosion - grass can hold more water than shrubs. After all, these slopes used to be forested, and only recently forestation programs were started again, so it's kind of a fragile ecosystem up there.

And if they wouldn't, the paragliders would take care of it.

[–]DadOfWhiteJesus 0 points1 point ago

Haha yeah man that's dope.

[–]hnice 5 points6 points ago

i was gonna make a dumb Dolemite reference, but then you beat me to it and were all mature about it and now my entire morning is ruined.

thanks for nothing ;)

[–]That90sShow 2 points3 points ago

Where land is expensive, people take care.

[–]ilostsight 1 point2 points ago

expensive indeed... this pic was taken near the Seceda (2519m), Ortisei in South Tyrol

[–]10587comefindme 2 points3 points ago

That is a hay field.

[–]FeculentUtopia 0 points1 point ago

Ah, I see. I thought it'd perhaps been done out of vanity, like we do with our lawns here.

[–]10587comefindme 0 points1 point ago

Farmers are just as proud of a well done hay field as we are when our lawns are done correctly. See that top row, that takes skill, one slip and you die(unless Italy has some supper tractor).

[–]jspsfx[S] 11 points12 points ago

Resubmitted because I unintentionally broke a rule. I will put more effort into looking for photographers flickr accounts in the future

[–]drceverettkoop 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the picture. My dad is from a small town near the Dolomites so this is pretty cool.

[–]OoogaOoogaYoink 8 points9 points ago

Someone get a really long tarp and a hose. You'd have pure slip'n'slide glory on your hands.

[–]european_impostor 9 points10 points ago

Followed by death

[–]AngryWiteGuy 15 points16 points ago

I'm 40% dolomite!

[–]barrackinho 6 points7 points ago

Neat! snaps photo

[–]Phil_J_Fry 2 points3 points ago

Huh, so's my friend...

[–]feared_rear_admiral 17 points18 points ago

It's Dolomites, baby!

[–]jonathanrdt 5 points6 points ago

I just knew.

[–]bluetoe 2 points3 points ago

Is that a golf course?

[–]ReyechMac 5 points6 points ago

Hard mode.

[–]jrm82 1 point2 points ago

I think it's bocce.

[–]lebowskisweater 2 points3 points ago

Solid.

[–]brendax 2 points3 points ago

Oh man I love dolomite rock. Most of the Canadian Rockies are made of the stuff, I've scrambled a few mountains that look very similar to this (minus the golf course)

[–]harrydean99 1 point2 points ago

Ha. I have a photo somewhere of me on that same hill, but in winter. Snowboarding. The Dolomites are amazing.

[–]barrackinho 2 points3 points ago

[–]General_Awesome 1 point2 points ago

Where is this exactly?

[–]kingscotticus 3 points4 points ago

Dolomites are in the Sudtirol/Alto-Adige area in Northeastern Italy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Tyrol

[–]derwisch 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but where is this exactly for larger values of "exactly"? As in geocoordinates exact by the minute?

[–]Moglodytes 3 points4 points ago

I think it is looking east from a bit above the Seceda top lift station, which starts in Ortisei in the Val Gardena

[–]derwisch 0 points1 point ago

Yes, looks as if it is this cliff

[–]ga4a89 1 point2 points ago

Location: Nagrand.

[–]DeathByPianos 1 point2 points ago

That's so great. I can practically see the geological processes that pushed up those mountains.

[–]FaerieStories 1 point2 points ago

I've climbed in the Dolomites, beautiful region.

[–]papiwoldz 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this been reposted so many times but it never ceases to amaze me.

[–]wolfattacks 2 points3 points ago

Not enough saturation. The trail needs to be purple and the clouds should be orange.

[–]novel-leap 1 point2 points ago

Substantially less malt liquor or white bitches than I expected. They're in the there somewhere though, they just gotta be.

[–]fortis_et_velox 0 points1 point ago

I could have been shooting craps on tables of GREEN instead of porcelains of white! You are the motherfuckin ACE OF SPADES, Charlie Brown!!

[–]Ziro427 0 points1 point ago

That place looks like it could be an absolutely epic site for mini golf.

[–]e10byzombiz 0 points1 point ago

I was just there this summer and there were farmers scything the grass and bundling it up. I don't think they used a mower.

[–]Reneau 0 points1 point ago

"Pshhh, of course I mow my back yard! "

[–]Ass4Ass 0 points1 point ago

I want to roll down that like a little kid SO BAD.

[–]7even89 0 points1 point ago

I wanna fly off it with my bike!

[–]hobolife 0 points1 point ago

[–]defnoodle 0 points1 point ago

[–]desiftw1 0 points1 point ago

Trivia: One of the greatest mountain climbers (and general badasses) of all time, Reinhold Messner grew up climbing these. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinhold_Messner

[–]AlphaWolfSniper 0 points1 point ago

Anyone have this picture in 1920x1080?

[–]BadGeorge 0 points1 point ago

Should "northeastern" be capatalised?

[–]AlexthePwner 0 points1 point ago

I want to go sledding here badly.

[–]Hghwytohell 0 points1 point ago

I'm currently studying abroad in Italy, and i'm looking to do a weekend camping/hiking trip up here. Does anyone have any further information about camping/hiking in the area?

[–]R0ME0H0TEL 0 points1 point ago

I want to go ice blocking down that hill so bad

[–]Nate01 0 points1 point ago

looks like a really big ramp. someone needs to go off this in a really big monster truck

[–]Eric12345 0 points1 point ago

Those mountains appear to be made of 40% Dolomite.

[–]feared_rear_admiral -1 points0 points ago

It's Dolomites, baby!

[–]TitsofErica -2 points-1 points ago

I swear to god if I see this posted one more fucking time...
