Damn, dude. Cats are bastards for ONLY kneading organs, never muscles. Of course my cat does this to me and my boyfriend, but also to my great dane and pit bull. Dogs eventually start farting and making weird noises 'cause the cat is all pushing everything around in their intestines. The dogs never ask the cat to stop, though, amazingly.

That's kneading, and it's instinctive for kittens.

Mine would do that to my neck (or try, anyway) when they were young and I was lying on my back.

When my cat is trying to fall asleep, she will knead and lick the blankets. She loves licking fleece blankets.

The popular belief is that it starts with kneading on the mothercat to stimulate milkproduction/flow and that our pets never really leave the kittenstage mentally. When cats are relaxed and snuggly, the instinctive response would be to knead an imaginary mother.

Not to mention that the paws are sensitive and scentmarking whih could point to the behaviour being another way for the cat to cuddlemark.

I remember when I bought my cat home for the first time. He'd 'happy paws' either the air or people's organs/chins/stomachs when he was in a really good mood, and my housemates sternly told me that it was a sign of a cat who had been prematurely separated from his mother, and thus retained that behaviour.

They turned out to be a couple of dumb dumbs :)
