Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

Can some math person do your magic and figure out what the odds are of getting the black/white stripe pattern of puppies if they randomly pick a dish each time?

This'll happen 10% of the time.

The first white puppy that shows up has a 3/5ths chance of not screwing everything up (by picking bowl #2 or #4). The second will have a 2/4ths chance (two "good" bowls left, four to choose from). The third will have a 1/3rd chance (one "good" bowl left, three to choose from). Multiply those together: (3/5) * (2/4) * (1/3) = 1/10.

Or you can think of it from the bowl's perspective and say that there is a 3/5 chance a white puppy picks the first bowl, 2/4 chance a black puppy picks the second, a 2/3 chance a white puppy picks the middle, a 1/2 chance that a black puppy picks the forth, and a 1/1 chance that the last white puppy picks the fifth bowl. Same answer.

Order of the bowls is more obviously insignificant, since they're all interchangeable. Puppies, not so much.

Edit: Upon reflection, not so much. Bowls #2 and #4 have to end up with a black puppy, after all…

Or: The number of possible ways to arrange the puppies in this pattern is 3! * 2! = 12, since there are 3! ways to shuffle the white puppies and 2! ways to shuffle the black puppies. Since there are 5! = 120 possible arrangements of the puppies, the probability of getting this pattern is 12/120 = 1/10.

(2!3!)/5! =(2x1)/(4x5) =2/20 =1/10

Alternatively:

3/5 x 2/4 x 2/3 x 1/2 x 1/1 = 1/10

He just did 5! which is 120. That'd be the total number of combinations, not the amount that end up with the pictured pattern.

Edit: For the deleted comment, you have to look at the puppies as #1-5, not just black and white, so there's really 120 ways to arrange them. However, in terms of colours, there's only 10. You did it right based on what was asked, though.

Haha, really? That's funny. I didn't actually see it, but deduced it from your reply, as my initial thought was to use 5! and then reduce it. I haven't taken probability in ages, though.. I'm more of a calculus guy. Probability always interested me, but was tough to wrap my head around.

He said it was his favorite class. I can't blame him though. We spent maybe a week on this type of stuff and the rest of the class deriving distributions, moment generating functions, etc. It's a class that helps you succeed in higher level stats courses but is pretty useless in real life.

I had an older dog that my family rescued growing up that was just a physical mess. All sorts of problems and all we could do was make his remaining days happy. Number 4 in the picture is pretty much eating in the same fashion as good ol' Beauregard.

He came to us with glaucoma in one eye, completely malnourished, but still as sweet as can be and just wanting someone to return the love. It's kinda funny, he ended up getting his glaucoma eye removed, and then another dog we rescued had to get the opposite eye removed because of a tumor growing behind it, so I just liked to call the two Blinky and Winky.

And now to ruin the joy...

Sometimes (this might just be the linoleum) if you see this it is a very serious problem. One of my coworker's dogs recently had a litter and one of the puppies had legs the splayed out like that. I guess it's called "swimmer syndrome" or some crap like that. They can't hold themselves up with their legs and they don't develop properly.

My coworker didn't give up and even tried to make some kind of support contraption to give the dog a shot at correcting its leg posture. It didn't work and I believe the pup was eventually put down to save it from a lifetime of issues.
