Welcome to r/vegetarian!

New or potential vegetarians - please read this FAQ before posting.

A lot of the posts at r/vegetarian are from new or prospective vegetarians asking questions about the switch to the diet and what's important. While it's great to have more converts, we often spend time repeating the same advice. So here's some hints, tips, info and links for you. Of course, don't be put off asking the community a question; they're always happy to help and there's a lot of vegetarian experience around these parts.

What is a vegetarian? Most western vegetarians are "Ovo-lacto" which means they do not eat meat but do eat eggs and dairy. Of course this is down to personal preference. A vegan is someone who abstains from the use of any animal derived product. Don't vegetarian diets lack protein? Far from it! Protein can be obtained from a wide range of sources such as pulses, beans, lentils and nuts. Visit here for an overview of vegetarian nutrition requirements and sources.

Will I miss meat? Well that's down to you. You may surprise yourself by how much you forget about meat with a varied vegetarian diet. If you still get a hankering for meat, there are some excellent meat substitutes out there depending on where you live.

Are the meals boring? Not at all. Beginning a vegetarian diet is like an adventure, you'll be forced to try new things and new flavours. It's not all going to be great (a bad tofu experience is probably guaranteed)! Don't be put off though, it's all a learning experience. Get a few cookbooks and check out veggie blogs to get your ideas flowing.

Don't become a pastafarian! It's all too simple to try and survive on pasta and tomato sauce or mac and cheese. BAD IDEA! You need a varied diet.

You know when you line up at the checkout and you plop down all kinds of veggies, some hummus, some kind of organic herbal shit, some tofu, some whole wheat bread, maybe some soy milk, and then the person behind you puts like ten steaks, some ground beef, a chicken, a gallon of whole milk, and three loaves of white bread? Yeah. It's that feeling that maybe you have something in common, but right now it's not apparent what it may be.

I always notice and I always think one thing, and one thing only when I see someone do that, speaking to myself mentally:

"The lack of Cheez-its and ground beef in this skinny bitch's order, and their presence in yours, is why you are a fat fuck."

Perhaps one day I shall join your ranks.

Hi, chubby vegan here, mainly whole foods, low gluten and very little junk. I'm kinda sick of all the fat shaming and assumptions people make. I find people in the veggie community to be the most judgmental and rude. I've been chubby most of my life, even when I was advancing through martial arts working out 6 days a week and eating clean. I guess I'm just saying, not everyone is a "fat fuck" due to the cheese it's, some times they are for the kids and SO at home.

240lb vegetarian reporting in solidarity.

Well just in case it wasn't clear, I was talking about myself and Cheez-Its.

Oh... I thought you were referring to the fat fuck with cheeze it's being the other person. I guess I was kind of confused as to why you would want to join the fatties... I'm still irritated by the fat shaming and judging that goes on in the veg communities though.

When people give me shit about it, they tend to be unaware of the amount of shit I have given myself over it. But yeah...I'm on these subreddits basically for ideas on how to decrease my calorie intake.

Sorry I snapped at you, I'm a bit sensitive about it.

You know what's even funnier? When you're buying all that stuff, and then you're brother calls and says, "can you grab me some of that buffalo chicken cheddar ranch dip?"

ha.

I live with and shop for omnivores. I feel an odd self-consciousness when I plop a pack of chicken breasts next to tofurkey slices.
