It's a pretty popular picture, so sorry if you have seen it before.

Question: This isn't a real picture, right? When we see photos of galaxies are they actual photos or renderings?
[–]super_cat 6 points7 points8 points 8 days ago
It's an actual photo taken with the hubble telescope, but it is a combination of visible light (green, red and blue light) and infrared light. So it wouldn't look exactly like the photo if you saw it with the naked eye, as we obviously only can see visible light.

Thanks for the info.

I don't know about this particular picture but very often the images are actual photos, occasionally with the colours enhanced.

I'm not sure if this is a new or an old galaxy. I know that the clouds could form planets and stars later, but don't exploding stars also form dust clouds and nebulas?
[–]Klayer42 2 points3 points4 points 9 days ago
Indeed they do! It's a cycle, the stars eject gasses and dust, and the dust gets hoovered up into other nebulae, to form more stars. The only way to from the heavier elements is by massive stellar explosions, so this cycle does not repeat ad infinitum, as at some point normal stellar fusion can no longer fuse the larger atoms.
A good rule of thumb is that if there is a lot of gas and dust, and it is energized, that is a good region to look for star formation. This isn't all there is to it, but I hope I helped explain it a little better for ya! :)

So if you lived in one of the dark parts of that galaxy, would you have significantly fewer visible stars at night than we do? Man, imagine what it would be like to live on that world, and then when your radio telescope technology advanced far enough, discover that there was an entire universe of stars out there that you would never be able to see for yourself.

Absolutely love this picture. You can really see the depth near the center of the galaxy. Amazing!

Really wish I could get true high resolution version of this.

Best I could find with a quick reverse image serach.
