If you are on the fifth note of a scale and move down by 4 steps, you are now on the second note of the scale. Just whenever you are thinking of intervals between notes you always have to take into account the "starting" note. Its a problem that I remember having a lot of trouble with when I was in college.

Im sure there is a name for this kind of "math" problem, but I passed general ed math and called it good. Im HORRIBLE with math.

I think you're just over complicating it. You're not moving down 4 steps. From 5 to the 2nd, its only three intervals. 5 to 4, 4 to 3 and 3 to 2.

Heres the C scale.

Take the 5th note (G) and count down 4. You're on 1 (C)

I'm on G. I move down to F, E, D and finally C [major scale progression]. 4 Notes down. I'm down to the root. 5-4=1

I'm on G. I move down to F#, F, E, and finally D# [half steps]. I'm on the "2.5th" note of the scale (or the augmented second if that's what you mean by this argument). 5-4=2.5, (or 5-4=2* I guess for the augmented second).

Even if you ONLY do whole steps instead of the major scale, you end up on B or the ninth of the scale. 5-4=-1

Unless your saying one of the "steps down" is from the G to itself again, I don't know how moving down 4 steps leads to ending up at a D.

I'm not seeing how 5-4=2
