I'm pretty sure this could still be taken by someone as sexist, saying Women shouldn't be able to walk around at night because they are weaker than men who might try to take advantage of them IMO.

Came in looking for this comment, wasn't disappointed.

Yes, this is still sexist. At least you tried, OP.

A woman walking alone at night in the Middle East is dangerous. It's just a fact.

Also, semicolon.

Meme gets popular, everyone loves it, meme gets overused, people bitch about it, meme dies.

[–]giranda 0 points1 point ago

it's not a good idea for anyone to walk around at night by themselves there, it's still basically a warzone in many places

...I think this is fine as an interpretation of the meme.

I also think that this can be said about anywhere. http://www.rapecrisisscotland.org.uk/workspace/uploads/files/rcs%5Btopten%5Dpcarda6fin2reverse.jpg

Wow that is sexist.

[–]sam723 0 points1 point ago

Wow. This whole thread is sexist. The premise that the night is unsafe for women and not men is sexist, and universal, and prevalent.

[–]reidhasguitar 0 points1 point ago

Yes it is, but that graphic is probably the worst thing in this whole thread.

[–]sam723 0 points1 point ago

in what way? isn't the understood context of this particular incarnation of the meme that a woman is not safe at night because there is potential that she might be raped (by a man)? All that graphic does is take the 'advice' that people give potential victims (women) and translate it into 'advice' for potential rapists, which the meme has already, in context, communicated are men.

[–]reidhasguitar 0 points1 point ago

The graphics perpetuates the idea that men are all soon-to-be rapists, if they aren't already. It also perpetuates the idea that only women can be raped. I think a better gender-neutral guide would read, "Don't rape.", and that's it. We don't need this shit.

[–]sam723 0 points1 point ago

No it doesn't. That graphic takes the responsibility away from the victim and turns it to the perpetrator. What perpetuates the idea that all men are rapists is being told at age 6, at age 12, at age 18, AT ALL AGES, is that a woman should be afraid to go out at night by herself (because she could be raped). Additionally, it is the meme itself that perpetuates the idea that men can't raped, because it's only unsafe for women and not men. If it was safe for everyone at night, then everyone would be safe.

[–]reidhasguitar 0 points1 point ago

takes the responsibility away from the victim and turns it to the perpetrator.

... who it assumes is male, and assumes that the victim is female. Obviously the responsibility should be on everybody to not rape, but to create the idea that only women can be raped, and that only men can rape is complete rubbish. It stops people from feeling all right about coming forward when they've been raped, because they're being told that they can't be.

[–]sam723 0 points1 point ago

The meme itself assumes the rapist is male! Why are you offended when the language is blatant and not when it is implied?

[–]reidhasguitar 0 points1 point ago

I don't like either of them.
