this is the basis of literally every alternative theory to a cartoon

[–]crjohnson8 40 points41 points ago

Sorry dude, it's actually a reference to the final episode of St. Elsewhere a 1982 medical drama. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Elsewhere

[–]Sven__Hoek 47 points48 points ago

Which is also used as the basis of literally every alternative theory to a show

[–]SwellFellow 59 points60 points ago

No, because that's a cop-out and a lazy way to end any TV series.

[–]SuziGlass 37 points38 points ago

It was all a dream.

Yeah, fuck writing shit!

[–]SagebrushPoet 5 points6 points ago

Naw, it lets you bring back a character who was kicked off the show by being killed. Hell, you can reveal that a show's entire 9th season was a dream.)

[–]Forhavu 0 points1 point ago

This ending wasn't a dream though, it was the workings of an mentally handicapped mind, and an entire snow globe house of her imaginary friends where all imaginary friends can live together in peace, and where she is normal.

In my opinion, it's beautiful, and should be how it ended.

[–]Infulable 1 point2 points ago

It's beautiful yes, but it's not a note you can end on.

It invalidates everything else you've said, any other meaning people derived is lost because it was all a dream.

Which is not to say you should avoid hinting at it. Buffy has an episode in which it is hinted that maybe it could be all a dream and it works very well.

It is an interpretation you can take or leave, but is fun to think about.

[–]BaconZombie 2 points3 points ago

What do you think of the Buffy "Dream" episode? We bounces between the world of the show without her father and been in a mental hospital with both parents loving her.

She has to either kill her friend in the "dream" world to return to the real world which in the "dream" is a hallucination caused by poison from demon.

In the end she safes them and kills the demon and the ep end of a happy note with all her friend happy she is back to her senses......

But just as the credits roll it cuts to Buffy in a straight jacket rocking back and forward in her padded cell.

Although I've never actually watched Buffy, I trust Joss Whedon based on what I've read (Astonishing X-Men changed my life). This episode sounds like it was very well done.

[–]Malthusia 21 points22 points ago

[–]AdmiralSkippy 4 points5 points ago

...It's incredible how well that was animated.

[–]dmxgrrbark 3 points4 points ago

..... They put a LOT of effort into that.

[–]OscarSlenderman 3 points4 points ago

This is fake right? Ive been staring at a loading screen for 30 minutes

[–]WubU2 4 points5 points ago

right clicking > play fixed it for me.

[–]hyperspice 23 points24 points ago

I was watching an episode once, while tripping on shrooms and I came to a similar situation. Either way, too many feels.

[–]MatBot 8 points9 points ago

dude i watch shows and think all the time.

Honestly, this one is way sadder to me than any other alternative theory for a cartoon. At least in all the others the story goes on forever in their minds but in this one, the relationship is killed, abruptly ended by a society that feels the needs to force conformity on others through psycho-active drugs.

[–]CivilCJ 3 points4 points ago

This... right here.

[–]Baron_Von_Gagenshatz 4 points5 points ago

NOPE throws computer out window

[–]Alcnaeon 2 points3 points ago

Adventure Time doesn't need any help being dark, you just have to look past the cheery surface. The whole show literally takes place on a postapocolyptic earth. That's why you see old, broken shit and nonfunctioning technology everywhere.

[–]ChocoSapien 4 points5 points ago

That struck me in the feels.

[–]HydroHero 2 points3 points ago

My childhood was just shot in the head

[–]oreejoe 0 points1 point ago

Super deep.. Made me think stuff

[–]elfchica 0 points1 point ago

Not exactly the same but does remind me of The episode where Buffy's in a mental institution: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_Again

[–]BlahblahNomad 0 points1 point ago

This is the only episode I saw. Really tripped me out. The kids I babysat always watched it, so I heard about it A LOT.

[–]CarterJames 0 points1 point ago

You just fucked up my childhood. Hardcore

[–]Twitchey93 1 point2 points ago

Things like this always blow my freaking mind. Im sorry but I never think anything other than its a cartoon set in an alternate reality where shit like this is possible.

To dark man to much sad to many feels as previously stated.

[–]MC-GANDHI 1 point2 points ago

OH SHIT, if you want to get woahduded, you better get ready! Look up the Tommy Westphall hypothesis (this comic is a reference to that). There's no time to explain, you have to take this journey on your own. Trust me, take the red pill

[–]TheVacillate 0 points1 point ago

I wish everyone would take that little journey. It's amazing and it doesn't end.

[–]HopelessR -1 points0 points ago

St. Elmo's Fire did it first...

[–]sammmymantha -1 points0 points ago

This was the original ending to the show, but was thought to be too dark. Or deep..

[–]Bodofagod 15 points16 points ago

Do you have a source?

[–]CobraStallone -1 points0 points ago

Reddit is getting younger.

[–]Darikiel 0 points1 point ago

Pow... right in the hurt.

[–]ramontevarez 1 point2 points ago

this is the ending for Twin Peaks also

[–]DevelopingDevelopmen 1 point2 points ago

DUDE I was watching that. I know... you're free to spoil things over three months old... but still, DUDE.

[–]DBM9000 5 points6 points ago

It doesn't end like that.

[–]Wendys_frys -1 points0 points ago

Woah that, that was deep man. That really made me think about alot of stuff.

[–]renniechops -2 points-1 points ago

OP should really post this to /r/Frisson

[–]crabsmash -4 points-3 points ago

Wow, just like that. A cure for autism.
