Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports).

"Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

Posting Rules

  • Posts must be directly gaming-related. Thus, "generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission; similarly, reaction GIFs are also not appropriate as submissions.

  • Following Reddiquette is encouraged

  • No "general" URL shorteners (bitly, tinyurl, etc). Single-site URL shorteners (such as youtu.be or fav.me) are allowed.

  • No game or product giveaway of any kind

  • NSFW submissions and comments must be labeled

  • Spoilers can be posted using the following formatting:
    [X Kills Y](/spoiler)
    Result: X Kills Y.

  • To mark a spoiler as relevant to a specific game/topic, use the alternate formatting:
    [Player 1 wins](/spoiler "Pong")
    Result:
    Player 1 wins

  • Report posts containing spoilers not using the above method

  • Don't post users' personal information.

Submission Rules

Is your post not showing up? Do not delete it. Wait 5 minutes to give AutoModerator a chance to look at it; it approves most submissions automatically. If it hasn't shown up after more than 5 minutes, simply message the moderators and ask us to let it through.

See that dialogue box? Just follow these handy steps!

Step 1: Stop. Don't press anything. Go to the save games stored locally (probably somewhere in your 'My Documents' folder) and copy them elsewhere. Dropbox them if you're extra paranoid (and this is actually good practice for all of your save games in the future).

Step 2: Download the save games from the cloud. Check if they're more up to date.

(Step 3): Reload your alternative save games if the cloud backup is older.

Aaand you're safe.

I really love hunting in My Documents/Game, My Documents/My Games/Company/Game [or /Game], %appdata%/local/game,%appdata%/roaming game, /programdata/%company%/game for all my saves.

I thought all steam files were condensed in a single directory?

[–]DarKcS 2 points3 points ago

Not saves, unless they are designated inside the game directory..

[–]zoidbergWOOPWOOP 1 point2 points ago

Yeahhh its: My Documents/My Games/Borderlands 2

[–]DarKcS 8 points9 points ago

I know...but I was making a funny.

[–]zoidbergWOOPWOOP 1 point2 points ago

Oh I thought you were serious because some games the save files really are buried like that :x. CARRY ON.

[–]Coera 2 points3 points ago

That was the funny.

[–]DarKcS 0 points1 point ago

Wut..that was the joke..

So logically I figured "my internet probably went out during my session, meaning my computer will have more recent data, so I should upload from my computer to the cloud to sync them up." Apparently that was the wrong choice, because I lost a day of gaming and a kickass orange-rarity gun. I don't know how the cloud had more recent data than my machine...maybe something got corrupted somewhere... but really, the "last modified" data files already contain exact timestamps, there's no reason not to display them here.

[–]Repugnance 7 points8 points ago

So, I had this happen to two friends.

They both chose differently.

One chose to use local client, lost data and rollbacked character.

The other chose to use steam servers, lost data and rollbacked character.

The moral of the story is there's no winning.

Oh man, i have same problem, around 5 hours too, i was playing since evening, power went off somewhere round midnight for a while, when they turned it on again, i synced my saves... and you know the rest of the story. In my save folders i have only those old saves. Jeez, i think i'm not gonna sleep tonight.

[–]amusingduck -1 points0 points ago

Happened to me a few hours ago. I felt like an idiot for picking the download cloud files option after thinking about it for a few more seconds, but I guess apparently I could've been wrong either way. Lost around 5 hours, too.

[–]Diggleborf 0 points1 point ago

I just close out of that window and start the game against doesn't ask me again and I just play from where I left off :D

[–]Mackinstyle 1 point2 points ago

How would your local version ever be the less up to date one? In the unlikely case you're playing it on multiple computers it should also be just as clear which is more recent. Remember to logic before pressing buttons! Portal 2 taught me that.

[–]KindOfANerd 0 points1 point ago

The OP made a comment 6 hours before you made this post, explaining that he DID pick the local version based on the same reasoning you just used here and he still managed to lose his progress. Remember to read before commenting on something. Elementary school taught me that.

[–]Pulpedyams 0 points1 point ago

Indeed, though it would be interesting to know how the machine has the older save.

[–]The_Cave_Troll 0 points1 point ago

The save on the machine was probably corrupted. I had a Terraria save corrupt on me once. Lost about an entire day's worth of play.

[–]FullCookie 0 points1 point ago

It might be a good Idea to disable the cloud sync until you know what is going on.

[–]FabianQ 0 points1 point ago

That's what i've done while ago.. a little bit too late.

[–]DrXenu -2 points-1 points ago

Or play on a stable connection. Never had this problem ever.

[–]Revan1322 0 points1 point ago

Glad to know I wasn't the only one that did this... All that xp I got gone :(

[–]th3buhs 0 points1 point ago

Similar happened to me but I chose Internet because idk and it was the older one... Luckily, I hadn't been playing that long but I was still mad

[–]surelyanonymous 0 points1 point ago

This happened to me as well, but I felt like an idiot for choosing the download from cloud option like amusingduck. I guess I am lucky for not losing an orange, sorry to hear about that dude.

[–]Thugnificent01 0 points1 point ago

Don't use cloud saves, imo its better if you use local saves.

[–]WhatAboutDubs 0 points1 point ago

Always use the local files unless you game on more than one PC.

[–]XAL53 0 points1 point ago

It's surprising Origin has this but Steam doesn't.

I probably would have lost dozens of hours on Mass Effect 3/Battlefield 3 (ie: the only two games anyone has on their Origin account) if not for the timestamps.

...But then again unlike Steam, Origin has sync errors ALL THE TIME, so in development they were probably like "oh damnit, it happened again? hmmmm including the time for each save might be a good idea..".

[–]quayle 0 points1 point ago

Disappointed I wasn't here to help, would have just told you to go to the folder where you Borderlands save was and check to see the time stamp there

[–]Korbit 0 points1 point ago

How do you check the time stamp on the cloud files?

[–]quayle 0 points1 point ago

No you'd check on your local files and see how far back those are. then base your judgement
