That is quite an expensive picture

Two solutions looking for problems.

It's heartbreaking knowing I'll never be able to fly one of those. It's beautiful.

The one in the back is better..

Flexibility - won't need the stealth capabilities after the first days of a war after the radar sites get knocked out, and then you can mount more payload outside the internal bays. I believe they're doing weapons integration testing so presumably that's why it's hanging there.

Can someone please tell me why do they need to go through the trouble of putting the little plane on the big plane? Cant the little plane fly by itself?

the space shuttle is a glider

i see...

You're getting downvoted because people are mean, but the Space Shuttle (top) can't fly by itself and so needs to be transported when not re-entering the atmosphere.

Can I just ask what rock you live under? It must be a nice, quiet place.

[–]Loathe 2 points3 points ago

lol i'm from Thailand, it's primitive here.

[–]Formber 1 point2 points ago

Ha well, maybe it's just because I'm from the US, but I guess I thought it was common knowledge that the Space Shuttle couldn't fly itself. At least you learned something today, and so did I. ha

[–]saddestcat 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty damn sure the shuttle has boosters on the back that are used in orbit, if not it could never make it back. But yeah, its more or less a glider, but technically if it had fuel when reentering from space, it could "fly"

[–]DeskFlyer 1 point2 points ago

You're thinking of the orbital maneuvering system. Wouldn't be much help in the atmosphere.

Well....I guess maybe theoretically, but it isn't, at all, designed for that. The boosters would be a little over powering gliding back to Earth I'm thinking.
