Miguo also does other tricks, like walk on leashes, jumping through hoops, high five, etc. He's an all around awesome cat. Apparently it was a stray and they found their lunch boxes open all the time so they discovered the cat's been helping himself to food.

You know, this argument has never made sense to me. I get it, I've been on the same boat, but doesn't it technically work both ways? Why is it ok for a person to justify a repost because they haven't seen it, but wrong for someone who has to complain about it? Seems kind of double standerdish in terms of pleasing one side. I don't mind the occasional accidental repost. They don't really take away from the overall quality of reddit. But the problem is darkreef2 has 4 posts on the front page at this very moment and I have seen all of them. This actually does take away from the quality of reddit for me. And that's not cool.

I am coming off as a bit confrontational, aren't I? Sorry, this is the first time I've actually said anything about it. Usually I stick to downvoting and moving on (darkreef2 is at -18 for me, just goes to show how many times I've used this strategy in regards to him), but I'm just explaining the other side.

I agree with you. I've seen many reposts that I like, and I have not downvoted them if I personally have not seen them before. Because that's how the voting system is supposed to work. If more people upvote than downvote that means more people are seeing it for the first time, and that, ultimately, the post was good.

I was just trying to say why I personally don't like this post (that's why I said "for me" over and over again).

For me, the fact that some people haven't seen it has nothing to do with it. I don't like that Reddit gets used largely as a place for people to see all the things that exist on the internet.

I think it can be a better thing without reposts, because that gif/article/video/image has been through the cycle, and is out there on the internet as find-able as its popularity has allowed. The reason OP was able to find this gif easily is that it's already been spread around sites like Reddit. Reddit has served a good purpose for this content, and reposting it puts it back into a system where it doesn't belong, in my opinion.

Without reposts, all the content on Reddit would be stuff you would otherwise have to dig deep into the internet for, or brand new (be it a video, article, whatever). There are plenty of other sites to find old stuff that has already been through the cycle, and Reddit can either be one of those sites, or it can be a step in that cycle, but it doesn't work well when it's both--which is what reposts make it.

General rule of thumb for me, and this is just a personal standard but it's one that I've found many agree with:

4 months is often a good minimum for reposts. Reposting your own content, or simply intentionally reposting front-page content typically gets you a shit-storm of downvotes after people realize what you're doing (See: Trapped_In_Reddit, and others like him, and the OP of this post who is now accumulating RES tags by the hundreds). One can debate on whether or not this takes away from reddit, adds to it, or simply has no effect, but the fact of the matter is that after a while people catch on to schemes to simply acquire karma (without being genuinely original or funny or whatever) and start downvoting it out of principle.
