As someone who uses this method to do her dog's nails (and as someone who has worked in grooming in the past), I can say it's easier on the dog. Clippers--no matter what kind--pinch the dog's nails and can be painful, whereas the drill bit shaves it off and is painless, unless you go too far down and hit the quick. But definitely do it outside, because the dust smells terrible and breathing it in is not good.

My 4 dogs are terrified of the dremel but allow nail clippers to be used. I think it is individual to the dog. Whatever gets the job done.

Professional dog groomer here. It totally depends on the dog. First and foremost, unless you cut the quick, nail trimming with traditional clippers does not hurt. Just make sure you are holding it correctly and that they are sharp. Done right, a lot of dogs prefer it to the noisy dremel. On the other hand, a lot of dogs flip out at the sight of the clippers but sit like statues for the dremel, so it really just depends. Source: I've done about 12 nail trims a day for the past 7 years.

Yes, it's more of a pressure. Does it hurt when we clip our fingernails? No, we just feel a slight pressure and then it's through. We've thinner nails for sure, but it's made of the same stuff.

Hitting the quick is similar to clipping your nail bed.

It's probably from a high-pitched whine that humans can't hear well, like a vacuum cleaner. You might be able to get over the dog's fear by running the dremel at random times without trimming its nails to show that the noise is safe.

I prefer the dremel method as well but I do it in the kitchen usually, because i can just get a wet paper towel to wipe it off the tile. The problem is the dogs turn into Tony Montana if i take too long to clean it up.

I can 100% back this. We recently started using the Dremel and it's better for our dog and for us: she's not fond of either but getting used to the Dremel, and I don't have the anxiety associated with a potential bloodletting, which totally clears the air. And the lack of pinching is a huge bonus.

It's actually a dremel-style tool - you're not going to be able to do this with a regular drill there's no way it will spin fast enough to finish the job. We do this for both of our boxers and they're a bit nervous but it goes super fast and I can round the nails out a bit so they're not sharp at all.

My mother has one dog who doesn't mind the drill at all (and actually prefers it to the clippers) and another dog who is so terrified of the drill that we feared giving her a heart attack the first time we tried using it on her. Definitely just a doggie-to-doggie thing!

I work as a dog bather and I've never had a bad Boxer! It's surprising because they're usually so energetic, but they all sit perfectly still. It's one of the few breeds that I can personally say have always been well behaved for nail trims/grinds.

Hahah good to know it's not only the pugs in my town! They're adorable, but they just don't like nail trims, and safety loops don't do much for dogs without necks XD At work, we do a lot of comforting and distracting. Petting and talking to the dog or blowing in their face to make them irritated by something else in some cases. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a magic method, or I haven't found it yet.

I was dog-sitting for a woman with a 90lb German Shepherd over the summer. The dog has an autoimmune disease that is slowly making him go blind. The treatment to slow it down involves putting two drops in each of his eyes every night that clearly sting like hell.

Here I am alone in a more-or-less stranger's house with a 90lb death beast who is lying down in front of me with his head in my lap while I hold his eyes open and administer the dread drops.

I am more and more worried about the consequences of this and finally I get the first one in and he starts to whine and to paw at his face and then crawls entirely into my lap pressing his face against me while he cries.

Dogs are amazing.

My dogs used to be afraid of the clippers until we got the dremel tool. I would turn it on and let them see it, hear it and pet them with it while it was turned on until they weren't scared of it being around. Took a few weeks of consistent exposure before I ever tried actually using it. But now they don't mind getting their nails done.

I'm just piggybacking here to tell everyone to AVOID the 'PettiPaws" As-Seen-On-TV product, and to go with a decent rotary tool, preferably cordless. The "PettiPaws" has a very low speed motor, the sanding drum it comes with is low-quality, and the nail guard/guide is awkward.

I have this one and I use it without the guide on my small dog. As long as the batteries still have a charge and the sanding strips are not worn down it works great. I have heard the regular dremel tools heat up faster and can cause discomfort to the dog.

I've worked with groomers who use rotary tools/ dremels, and I never saw any evidence of discomfort. Mostly they were upset by the noise (the few who weren't used to grooming). Done properly a rotary tool should let you grind the nail very quickly, and get the job done with minimal upsetting of the critter.

I have to take my dog to the vet to get her claws clipped. The ONLY time she has shown aggression toward any human is toward me when I am trying to clip her nails. Even then, all she does is nibble my hand, which I am sure is some sort of "warning shot". The last time I took her I had to pay $30 because it took four people to hold her down while they did the deed. My poor puppy is so scared of it for some reason.

I have a Pit-Boxer mix and she is the weirdest, funniest dog I've ever owned. Things she does make me laugh on a daily basis. Like the way she stares at me upside down when I'm on the couch (her body is facing the same way as mine, but she points her head straight upwards and looks at my like a cuddle fish.

She's not the most athletic or intelligent or anything (about average in both categories), but her personality is amazing. I'm just now starting to realize why people get so upset when dogs die. They're like little people who are never sad and can only feel love. -_- (When trained and in a good home, which more domesticated animals should be.) They have their own little quirks and ways of showing their affection for you. Caroline (the dog in the picture) likes to leave her bone for me on the side of my bed while I'm sleeping. Sort of like, "Here, you're the boss and I don't need this toy while I'm sleeping," or something. Or maybe she just wanted me to throw it, haha..

My dogs seem to prefer the dremel too. You have to be careful and make short applications. If you hold it on there too long, the nail gets hot and it hurts. A few two or three second touches should do it.

my dog loves getting groomed. I lay her down on the bed and slowly clip her nails carefully. Once I get them down to a safe length i use a nail file to make them all nice and smooth. She falls asleep halfway through the process and has the silliest grin on her face :3
