Because buses are already 40x safer than cars.

Only 6 kids a year die in school bus accidents while 800 a year die getting to school in cars/bikes/walking. Adding seatbeats adds to bus cost and reduces bus occupancy, so making them mandatory would mean fewer kids being bussed overall since schools are already broke. So even if seatbelts were 100% effective (6 lives saved), if 1% more kids were walking/riding/being driven to school, you'd wind up with more deaths (800 -> 808).

Cool video, though.

[–]steveish 92 points93 points ago

thank you sir, for having that so eloquently explained to me

[–]PTCruisin 56 points57 points ago

And if there were an emergency, making sure all those kids are unbuckled and safely removed adds to the time to help.

[–]Shrikey 19 points20 points ago

Salient point. I'd not enjoy the thought of aiding children escape a bus on fire/on its side if they were all strapped in.

[–]Notsoseriousone 3 points4 points ago

he just can't help it.

[–]BeyondSight 2 points3 points ago

Buses are huge, they have a lot of mass and all the passengers are high up. Also, they have a very low center of gravity.

So, if a bus is hit, the smaller car gets most of the damage. Most of the damage to the bus occurs below the passengers, keeping them safe. And the likelihood of a bus flipping over is actually lower than you think, as the roof is primarily aluminum or steal.

Also, the bus seats are high for a reason. They keep you from being launched, which is the primary function of a seat belt anyway.

Back in my elementary school, a woman ran into a stopped bus, into the side, at 92 MPH. She died. The kid directly above the spot suffered a broken arm.

Buses are very safe.

[–]gawright87 2 points3 points ago

Haha, steal.

[–]lookattheduck 45 points46 points ago

School bus driver here. The way it was explained to me, research has determined that with an exception of situations like the one in the GIF above, you're safer without a seat belt on a school bus. Apparently hitting the seat in front of you causes less physical trauma than the grip of that seat belt holding you back.

That's also why the front seat has a back of a seat in front of it. That's also why we tell kids to sit the hell down, because if you're standing if/when there's an accident, the bottom half of your body will hit the seat in front of you but the top half will keep on going. Spines usually don't care for that kind of inertia either.

[–]Eternity42Immensity 41 points42 points ago

As a former bus kid: I am so, so sorry.

[–]Aleksander73 11 points12 points ago

Doctor here. Seatbelts can be very damaging to your internal organs as a child in a crash. I just saw a kid with a severely lacerated liver.

[–]corshap 3 points4 points ago

PICU nurse here, rather a positive seatbelt sign and liver lac than a massive traumatic head injury. Have to agree and say I've seen a lot of serious abdominal trauma from seat belts. Granted, those accidents were all very high force, and the majority of kids weren't restrained properly for their weight. But like I said, rather that than irreversible head trauma and a gorked out kid.

[–]Aleksander73 2 points3 points ago

I'm not saying seatbelts are bad. I was just explaining that they can and do cause damage. I worked rehab for TBIs a long time ago, sad stuff.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 5 points6 points ago

There’s also the fact that as a bus driver, most jurisdictions expect you do be a better driver than the average car driver, and the fact that the bus is a big yellow beast, making it so much less likely that you’ll get into an “accident” in the first place.

[–]lookattheduck 3 points4 points ago

Not just on the job, either. As a CDL-B holder, we're held to a higher standard accross the board. Our legal limit for BAC, off the clock and on your own time, is half that of other drivers. At least it is in Texas, anyway.

[–]Crustyfluffy 0 points1 point ago

It's national for all CDL A,B, or C licensed driver.

[–]Drsweetcum 0 points1 point ago

Tell that to my front teeth, and whiplashed neck. Then again I could have just had a horrible driver...

[–]grantmoore3d 2 points3 points ago

I'm also pretty sure seat belts in busses would increase the risk because then kids can't evacuate as easily (if the bus is on fire, for example).

[–]daxattacks 3 points4 points ago

A deadman's switch for the bus driver would probably save more kids. Every time I hear about one of these school bus crashes, it's an elderly driver who took a heart attack or seizure.

[–]Popcom 20 points21 points ago

It's not about cost its about evacuation safety.

[–]mage2k 57 points58 points ago

As with most things, it's not about any one thing.

[–]longknives 8 points9 points ago

My mom was a school bus driver. Some of the buses had seat belts, but they told the kids not to use them because overall it was safer without them.

[–]rwgeorge 1 point2 points ago

So more people die from black plague each year than kids die in bus accidents?

[–]jericho2291 4 points5 points ago

So how many kids died when the op's video was taken? That's like 4 years worth of children in a fraction of a second.

[–]cant_help_myself 45 points46 points ago

[–]PaullyDee19 18 points19 points ago

She could be fined 100$... Come on.

[–]chupa72[S] 6 points7 points ago

Thank you for the research.

[–]isofat 3 points4 points ago

Which goes to show exactly why there were no seat belts. If the bus's engine had caught fire, getting all those kids out of their seat belts would have took a few precious minutes.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for providing more info!

[–]putridcuntdestroyer 4 points5 points ago

Probably none. Definitely some concussions and broken bones though. The human body is remarkably resilient.

[–]JayGryph 3 points4 points ago

Particularly when you're young. Kids bounce.

[–]Bahama_Bob 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand how adding seatbelts reduces bus occupancy. Are you saying that a bus with seatbelts holds fewer children or that there would be less busses in the school's budget and therefore they wouldn't be able to pick up as many children? I was under the impression that, in the US, public schools are required to provide school bus services to all their students. If making seatbelts mandatory reduced the number of buses, how would they decide who was getting picked up by the busses available and who wasn't?

edit: Sorry, I didn't see the link at first. Ignore the first question.

[–]d00m3d_d00d 10 points11 points ago

When I was in high school, we would often have 5 people to a seat. I don't think a seatbelt will work for the kids sitting in the aisle.

[–]Ixidane 2 points3 points ago

Not true. Schools are not required to provide bus service to all students. The school system I went to didn't have busses, they contracted from the county schools when field trips were needed.

I think it varies state to state, but school systems are only required to provide bus transportation for special needs students, and only until a certain age.

[–]tehoreoz 3 points4 points ago

my high school cut buses out its budget the year after I graduated

regardless:

  1. cost
  2. impossible to get kids to use
  3. indirectly subvert rebellious tard kids into not wanting to take(the already safer) bus

[–]GroinSniper 1 point2 points ago

And if it caught fire, those kids are fucked.

[–]RebelWithoutAClue 1 point2 points ago

No way to assure compliance. It would very hard to monitor students to make sure they were buckled in a way which did not make them more prone to injury in a light collision. The safety measures built into a school bus design are quite different than what you'd see in a personal vehicle.

[–]davepople 1 point2 points ago

There are a lot more Cars than buses on the road and school buses only operate 5 days a week in a window of 2-3 hours in that day.

*Edit: Switched em round, thanks dude below

[–]yyx9 1 point2 points ago

Actually too as I read on Mental Floss the design of the bus seats cradle the kids much like eggs in Styrofoam packaging.

[–]wrinkled_penis 0 points1 point ago

I fail to understand how seat belts reduce occupancy. Seat belts don't take up much room. Install 2 per seat (2 passengers per seat). When I was in school I remember some buses had seat belts in the front rows of the bus where the teachers sat which I thought was quite ironic.

[–]ace_blazer 1 point2 points ago

That's because the front rows don't have that cushioned (ie. the compartmentalized bubble) seat in front of them, and the metal sheet in front isn't high enough to stop the teacher from flying through the window.

[–]gl77 0 points1 point ago

Used to be when I went to school, the buses were damn near full to occupancy or at least half full. Nowadays, I'm lucky to see 20 kids on a bus. But I gotta deal with moronic overprotective parents parking their cars on the road and jamming up traffic before and after school because they think everyone is a child molester that's just lying in wait to snatch up their little ones. My kids will definitely ride the bus, if there will even be such a thing when I have kids.

[–]0311 0 points1 point ago

I knew the top comment would be answering the title's question and providing a good explanation for why. Thanks for the info, cant_help_myself!

[–]CitizenPremier 0 points1 point ago

So... let's just give schools money for seatbelts then.

[–]BitterDivorcedDad 0 points1 point ago

Also, the children use the seat belts to hit each other, causing (more) injuries (than you see resulting from just accidents).

Source: My high school bus driver, who was part of a seatbelts on schoolbuses study.

[–]wdejr 0 points1 point ago

I was always under the impression that if a elementary or middle school kid had a seat belt on and they weren't able to unbuckle themselves that they would miss their bus stop and cause delays, back-ups and worried parents.

[–]CausticSerpent 70 points71 points ago

Surprisingly, this is actually safer than having the children stuck to their seats. It's weird, I know. But the general idea is that /most/ things can't shove a bus around and they very rarely tip over since they won't go very fast.

EDIT: Okay, replace 'can't go very fast' with 'takes like a million years to accelerate so you can't really speed on city roads.'

More crashes happen on regular city roads than on freeways.

[–]shaggy1265 56 points57 points ago

Also if the bus catches fire you don't have kids strapped into the seats.

[–]iammrhellohowareyou 70 points71 points ago

I always hate when kids get cooked for too long, things get a bit tough.

[–]PGids 4 points5 points ago

Natural selection? Smart ones GTFO, slower ones, well, not so lucky.

[–]the_penultimate_user 12 points13 points ago

Have you ever tried to be the first off the school bus? Everyone gets stuck behind the fucking land whale that decides to walk as slow as possible.

At that point it becomes whoever is in the front of back and everyone else burns.

[–]stupidlyugly 2 points3 points ago

I was in a bus in high school that got into a little tangle with a small pickup truck. We barely felt anything. Truck was pancaked.

[–]Mykhail 0 points1 point ago

Busses are still made of steel, not fiberglass or plastic. (exception the hoods are usually fiberglass)

[–]warboy 0 points1 point ago

This is true. I was in a bus accident where we were t-boned at 60 MPH. We moved into the other lane and that was about all. The truck that hit us disintegrated. Those bitches are resilient.

[–]capt_slim 33 points34 points ago

So great .gifs like this can be made.

[–]tits_hemingway 16 points17 points ago

I always assumed it was because kids would beat the shit out of each other with the buckles.

[–]shhyguuy 3 points4 points ago

This is most likely the correct answer. Our busses did have seatbelts, and while nobody actually wore them, they made cruel great awesome whips

[–]bigxy3242 50 points51 points ago

[–]letler 7 points8 points ago

[–]Compumerk 3 points4 points ago

There was like one seat-belt in the front, for the one genius kid.

[–]NextName 0 points1 point ago

Yup, that kid sure was special.

[–]R3dDawg 20 points21 points ago

The seats are used for "compartmentalization" because the seats are welded and screwed into the flooring, and the seats are meant to absorb the blow. Belts could be dangerous and undependant because the kids would either misuse them or damage them (scissors constant pulling and tugging)

[–]Toastermaface 0 points1 point ago

Thats exactly why they are so close together too, they kinda get around the seatbelt rule with these things

[–]aNnOyInGhAnDle 0 points1 point ago

Should be "undependable".

[–]Slippery_John 8 points9 points ago

I've noticed a lot of people comment on the fact that buses don't tend to flip, but that's only half the story. You see, while they may not flip easily, they do catch on fire. If you've ever ridden on a bus you'll have noticed that every five seats or so there's a special latch on a window that sets of the a small fire alarm when pulled. You'll also notice escape hatches on the top, as well as the door in the back. Many schools even have fire drills just for the buses.

[–]smileymalaise 10 points11 points ago

I've had those drills. It was a great way to get out of class.

[–]Danulas 5 points6 points ago

It sucked for us. We had "morning recess" while we waited for all of the buses to arrive.

Fire drills meant you missed out on morning recess.

[–]DrPepper86 2 points3 points ago

"Alright, instead of going home at our usual time, we're going to sit here at school for an additional 15 minutes while we do our fire drill"

"Fuck. I'm going to miss Power Rangers"

[–]smileymalaise 0 points1 point ago

Oh shit. I'm sorry yours was after school. Ours was during the middle of the school day and only cut into classtime. I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

[–]theodrixx 0 points1 point ago

Is it that buses are more likely to catch on fire than other motorized vehicles? Or just that evacuation is more difficult?

[–]i_attend_goat_orgies 4 points5 points ago

I've seen this gif so many times before, does anyone have sauce on this? Any of these kids die?

[–]SamanthaFishon 9 points10 points ago

Every school bus I have ever been on had seat belts ... :/

[–]GODDAMN_FARM_SHAMAN 8 points9 points ago

How many rows of seats did it have?

[–]Kerflupperkins 4 points5 points ago

And did you have to wait for the driver to unharness you upon arrival to school?

[–]SamanthaFishon 2 points3 points ago

It was your run of the mill long bus....our (forgive me) "Tart Carts" had harnesses...

[–]Mykhail 0 points1 point ago

Probably due to your state laws succumbing to the people who believe it is safer to have belts like cars.

[–]jbrittles 1 point2 points ago

my assumption is that the most common bus accident would be that it tips on its side which could strangle half of the kids. cars dont do that because they are so much smaller.

[–]CyberSoldier8 3 points4 points ago

Our buses have them, but we are specifically told not to use them because they are so shitty it won't actually save you at all, and it locks you to the seat if you get knocked out in a crash which could make it impossible for someone to haul you out of the seat if there was a fire or something.

[–]noparticularpoint 3 points4 points ago

It's not just cost or occupancy. In most accidents (although maybe not this one) the kids are safer without seat belts because when the bus runs into something the belt restrains their pelvis while their upper body snaps forward and their head hits the seat ahead, usually causing more severe injury. If you look at school buses these days you'll find more padding on the backs of the seats and you'll see that the pillars between the windows are located between the seats (to prevent kids from going out windows). The net result is that kids are generally better off (believe it or not) ricocheting around inside the bus than having their neck snapped when their head hit the seat in front or being thrown out of the bus entirely. Also, kids tend to use seat belt buckles to whack each other if you give them belts.

[–]UncharismaticGorilla 2 points3 points ago

In the next county, a school bus rolled 3 times. 12 kids airlifted to the hospital, 3 in critical condition. Granted an accident like this is unlikely, but it's just a horrible situation.

http://www.wbir.com/news/article/235404/2/Developing-School-bus-crash-sends-a-dozen-Washington-Co-students-to-hospital

[–]HentMas 0 points1 point ago

now, I can only imagine the state of a regular car that rolled 3 times would be devastated and no one would survive, that means the school is still safer... cool!

[–]Isakill 2 points3 points ago

Because injury rate would go UP on the trips to and from school.

Why, You ask? In the words of my old bus driver:

Kids would be smacking each other with the buckles.

[–]jgilbs 2 points3 points ago

Looks like this: http://www.ncsbs.org/crash_reports_2003/school_bus_rolling_over.htm

According to the article, no one was seriously injured. Apparently the bus driver swerved to avoid a car that was coming at her head on. Then she went to trial for failure to control her bus? WTF, Ohio?

[–]orthag 2 points3 points ago

She later admitted there was no car, she just drifted off the road. This was after she was found not guilty of failure to control. She then "retired." But the woman who replaced her is a bitch on wheels who spouts religious hatred at people. She told me I was going to hell for not believing in Jesus, and that i would get even worse torture for believing in evolution. She's also ran me off the road with her bus several times.

[–]CitizenTed 2 points3 points ago

This is just an anecdote, but it shows how safe school buses are...

Way back when, I was taking the morning bus to school in central NJ. Bus was nearly full. We were heading down an arterial road at about 35-40mph when some old man in a Buick runs a red light directly into our path. The driver had no time to brake. We ate that car at full trot. The front of the bus crunched forward, lurching up and over the car, dragging it past the intersection and up the road a bit. Finally, the huge wreck lurched to stop. The driver put it in reverse to back it off the car.

We all got a good Newtonian jarring by the sudden deceleration. There were a few scratches and bruises. But that was it. The old man in the Buick died on the scene. The bus front end was crunched up and the front suspension was ruined, but otherwise it was OK. They called in another bus and we got to school late but 99% unharmed.

My analysis: school buses are big, huge, heavy, lumbering giants. They are quite safe and I don't think kids need to be belted in.

[–]Mykhail 0 points1 point ago

That and the fact that bus drivers have to take additional testing to upgrade their license to be able to drive these. As well a retest every 2 years. When was the last time you took your driving test?

[–]NEEMICK 1 point2 points ago

it looks like they are playing rock the bus and took it to far

[–]DillyG101 1 point2 points ago

Because this is hilarious.

[–]DominizZzle 1 point2 points ago

Is it bad that I laughed really hard at this?

[–]sp104 4 points5 points ago

Because kids are assumed to be too stupid to unbuckle themselves in case of something like a fire or crashing into water.

The seats are designed for them to not need belts and for head on or rear collisions they're not likely so suffer injury. Adding on the fact that the passengers of a school bus are well above most other vehicles on the road so direct impacts wouldn't be with the passengers but below them most of the time.

[–]ColrathD 1 point2 points ago

[–]Mykhail 0 points1 point ago

[–]Castigar2000 1 point2 points ago

It's called compartmentalization; it's the way seats are designed. Adding seatbelts wouldn't be cost effective as far as improving crash survivability. Statistically buses are still much safer than most other modes of transportation.

[–]EMZ69 0 points1 point ago

A school bus flipped in my town like yesterday. There were lots of helicopters out.

[–]6degreestoBillMurray 1 point2 points ago

As a school bus driver, I hope they never put seat belts on my bus. If I'm ever in a serious accident, I'd have to go through and cut the seat belts off of god only knows how many kids. It takes a bus maybe 10 seconds to be fully engulfed in flames if there's a fire.

Also, the seats are designed to catch the kids if they're sitting in them properly. That's why they're so close together, and also why your bus driver used to yell at you to sit in your seats all the time (if they were doing their job).

Accidents like the one in the video are unbelievably rare. School buses are statistically the safest mode of transport ever.

[–]for_kicks 2 points3 points ago

I don't know if there's some type of bus driver email list or annual meetings, but if you can pass the word along, I'd like to apologize to all the bus drivers I've had since 1rst grade. I would switch seats, stand up, reach behind me or in front of me to hit other children, block the aisle when talking to someone sitting across from me and I'd always sit in the back and participate in fights. So, sorry.

[–]MrYaah -1 points0 points ago

They're also not supposed to have cameras

[–]Goldenelm 1 point2 points ago

Hey this happened in my county.

[–]radii314 0 points1 point ago

kids are all cartilage - they're like superballs ... a few bounces and they bounce back again

[–]iLuVtiffany 0 points1 point ago

Population control. Seriously, buses are actually stupid safe compared to other forms of travel.

[–]xsamx321 0 points1 point ago

The seat belts that school buses have can actually break you're hip if you get into an accident.

[–]psuedopseudo 0 points1 point ago

[–]JayGryph 0 points1 point ago

Imagine all the bruises from kids hitting each other with seatbelts.

[–]LoftyDog 0 points1 point ago

I was always thought kids didn't have to wear searbelts because if it was a rule and a kid was having trouble the bus driver would have to help, and that puts them very close to the kids waist. Parents are always afraid of perverts/pedos so they wouldn't want that. You would think I'd it's not required at least be encouraged. The never asked us to wear them.

[–]aj_ski 0 points1 point ago

I want to know why there is a kid without shoes on... Was the accident that powerful to knock his shoes off or when he woke up did he say "fuck it, no shoes today."

[–]amc-CR 0 points1 point ago

someone should turn that gif so when the kids go to the left they go down

[–]literacolax 0 points1 point ago

This happened in my hometown, at my school at the time. No one was killed, I think the worst injury was a broken arm.

[–]karma4prez 1 point2 points ago

A lot of buses have them, its just that no one wants to be the only pussy wearing a seat belt.

[–]omglaurent 0 points1 point ago

did they die?

[–]jfb423 1 point2 points ago

Wow. This just happened in my town yesterday. This is actually an issue they are talking about. http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/News/article.php?id=102505

[–]DopeBoyG 0 points1 point ago

Actually, there are these new busses some schools have. With longer seats, 3 seatbelts per, and the bus driver obliges us to wear them.

[–]Riemann_Solution 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to think someone put a child magnet up next to the bus.

[–]thevoidistoolarge 0 points1 point ago

I can just here the sound, like throwing heavy garbage bags in an empty dumpster.

[–]stainonmyshirt 0 points1 point ago

All the school buses I went on had seat belts. I live in Connecticut and have attended school here all my life. They were never used and the couple times in elementary school they tried to make us use them failed miserably.

[–]Zubz95 0 points1 point ago

Children magnets at work.

[–]thegreatwhitemenace 0 points1 point ago

SLAMMO

[–]Amuter 0 points1 point ago

I downvote you!

JUSTICE PREVAILS ONCE MORE!!

[–]ChoadFarmer 0 points1 point ago

It's sad that the first thing I thought was "EWWW, THE GROSS KID IS TOUCHING ME!'. Yes, I had a bad childhood.

[–]virtualmatrix555 0 points1 point ago

When I was in elementary school, those buses had seat belts but from middle school through high school those particular buses did not. We had a crazy ass bus driver in middle school, once stopped in the middle of an intersection and threatened to have us all killed. Papa Smurf, remember the name, Gulfport, MS.

[–]redstonenico 0 points1 point ago

Sadly they do.

[–]animeari 0 points1 point ago

A lot of busses do have seat belts (at least in my own experience), but nobody bothers to wear them even when they are present.

[–]itsme_yourdad 0 points1 point ago

Because you're never supposed to turn on your port-side child magnet. It's too powerful.

[–]Davecasa 0 points1 point ago

Three main reasons:

  1. They would create more injuries than they would prevent, due to the way school busses are constructed and belts would be attached. Seat belts also tend to cause more severe injuries in children than adults.

  2. School bus accidents resulting in severe injuries are incredibly rare to begin with.

  3. You could never get the kids to wear them reliably. If you came anywhere close, route duration would get ridiculous.

Source: My uncle works in bus/paratransit accidents. Mostly paratransit these days because that's where the money is... School busses are too safe for his line of work.

[–]Throwawaychica 0 points1 point ago

Our school district requires them.

[–]raradar 0 points1 point ago

And I just got done reading "The Sweet Hereafter."

[–]laughing_pug 0 points1 point ago

It's beautiful when the time is sped up so that the kids are slammed sideways at hyperspeed (watch the clock)

[–]cookiesone 0 points1 point ago

Watching this to dub step is hilarious.

[–]grandehead 0 points1 point ago

Because you wouldn't be able to jump when the bus hits a speed bump.

[–]khortonworld 0 points1 point ago

is there a breeze in here?

[–]HotwaxNinjaPanther 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was because kids end up strangling each other or themselves with bus seat belts. It's harder to monitor them while you're driving. If the kid doesn't fasten himself in snugly and the bus stops a little too hard, the kid's going to slide under the seatbelt, under the seat in front of him, get the belt caught under his chin and choke to death, flailing.

[–]BaronVonSlapNuts 0 points1 point ago

Why doesn't Reddit use Karma Decay as a repost filter again?

[–]MaddieCakes 0 points1 point ago

I really fucking hate myself for laughing at this.

[–]snotpocket 0 points1 point ago

As someone who once drove a school bus (yay part time college work): the kids would beat the shit out of each other with those things. There'd probably be a fatality a week if we provided each bus with 60+ built in, readily available flails.

[–]arabianmango 0 points1 point ago

whenever I see this I immediately think...FUS RO DA!!!

[–]Snafoza 0 points1 point ago

am I a bad person for laughing at this?

[–]fromaarontoashes 0 points1 point ago

All the school busses I rode had seatbelts on them.

[–]Sauna1980 0 points1 point ago

given that most buses these days are driven by Indians more accustomed to a donkey cart we absolutely need seat belts

[–]The_Spectator 0 points1 point ago

Some do and let me tell you. I take back all the hate I had for them when I was required to use them.

[–]budguy68 0 points1 point ago

God damn stupid fucking ignorant people like the OP are always saying stupid shit. " Ohh I hear some people died in their tub while bathing last year so why dont people wear helmets when bathing again...? derp derp derp!" Seriously OP, go fucking shot your face with a double barrel shutgun or shut the fuck up. I like riding my motorcycle without a helpmet sometimes. Its my life, fuck you.

[–]sirunclecid 0 points1 point ago

Because they shouldn't be on their side anyways? Seatbelts would probably destroy those kids... and then they're too stupid to unbuckle the shit anyways.
