Yeah a fighter maintaining speed with another aircraft isn't perfect timing.

It's like driving next to a car on the interstate and taking a picture. OH MAN!

[–]igiarmpr 4 points5 points ago

Was hoping this would be a link to some kind of shittyperfecttiming meets midlyinteresting :/

[–]longshot2025 66 points67 points ago

Not to nitpick, but when submitting to /r/PerfectTiming, a title about the timing of the photograph is really useless.

Proudly bought to you proudly by the redundancy department of redundancy, Tautology inc. company, Iowa Hall, Iowa Campus, Iowa University, Iowa City, Iowa.

There you go.

There's something quite sad about this photograph. Something about the jet being the bigger plane's inner child. Something about failed life ambitions and becoming a shadow of one's former self.

Man, I really gotta stop anthropomorphising everything.

[–]Bluemoon_333 21 points22 points ago

Well that got deep fast

[–]saranaclake123 8 points9 points ago

Fast? I'd say it was perfectly timed deepness.

[–]DeskFlyer 3 points4 points ago

That's what she said?

I'll show myself out.

[–]Bluemoon_333 1 point2 points ago

No need. It was kinda intentional!

[–]calamormine 1 point2 points ago

That's what he said.

[–]JBOSS_08 4 points5 points ago

Do you need a hug?

[–]BMull93 0 points1 point ago

That's weird because I thought something along those exact same lines, but I couldn't put it into words.

[–]lethargicwalrus 10 points11 points ago

Was this taken from a window on the plane casting the shadow?

[–]DeskFlyer 19 points20 points ago

Probably. Also, this photo was likely snapped as the fighter jet was hanging around alongside the other aircraft, not as it was zooming by. It probably took some careful maneuvering by the pilot, but perfect timing really wasn't needed to get this photo (unless you're talking about the position of the Sun and Moon relative to the two aircraft during their evening flight).

By the way, the jet in the photo is a Boeing KC-767 KC-135 KC-10A tanker and the plane casting a shadow on it is an F/A-18. Was probably snapped shortly after refueling, or waiting in line to be gassed up.

[–]crzydang1 2 points3 points ago

Just to clarify it"s a KC-10A over Afghanistan. Fighters wait on the refuelers aircrafts left whiles there's another one on the paradrouge or boom.

[–]69jafo 0 points1 point ago

Correct

[–]melbournian 1 point2 points ago

The sun and the moon are in the same plane as which makes it easy to line up shadows when there's a mostly full moon.

[–]Knubinator 1 point2 points ago

Funny that it's a Navy/USMC plane casting on a USAF tanker.

[–]DeskFlyer 2 points3 points ago

It's pretty common since the Navy doesn't have their own tanker fleet, although they do sometimes share fuel between their planes.

[–]Im_an_F18_Bro 1 point2 points ago

On the left side, next in line for gas.

[–]tugrul 2 points3 points ago

It's a KC-135, there are no USAF KC-767s.

[–]DeskFlyer 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the correction. Not sure why I was thinking 767.

[–]Im_an_F18_Bro 1 point2 points ago

F-18s have big canopies, so yes. Common scenario over Afghanistan (and previously Iraq). We need to hit a tanker 3 times in a 6 hour flight. Mostly USAF KC-10s like this and KC-135s, with a few French 135s and two RAF tankers.

[–]rawheir16 9 points10 points ago

Photo is not really perfectly timed, the jet's shadow was probably visible for a few minutes. Cool how being up high you can see the moon longer during a sunset.

[–]justwonderingbro 3 points4 points ago

Is it really that hard to time this? All you gotta do is maintain a consistent speed with the other plane and take the pic at the right time of the day.

[–]Nostrabrahmus 0 points1 point ago

Not hard at all this happens all the time.

[–]deja-vu-comment 6 points7 points ago

Navy protecting the Air Force. Good humor, i am an aspiring navy F-18 pilot.

[–]godofallcows 2 points3 points ago

So basically you are doing what trapped_in_reddit did? Nice.

[–]invisime 0 points1 point ago

How is it that we can see both the sun and the shadow? Isn't the sun on the wrong side of the plane?

[–]timotab 9 points10 points ago

That's no moon!

No, wait... yes it is!

That's the moon!

[–]Corporal_Cavernosa 2 points3 points ago

Umm that's the moon?

[–]bathroomstalin 0 points1 point ago

How embarassing for the sun.

[–]_WES_ 0 points1 point ago

He's got the heart of a fighter jet.

[–]koviko 0 points1 point ago

Amazingly timed, sure. But is it perfectly timed?

[–]OnceInABlueMoon 0 points1 point ago

NOPE NOPE NOPE

[–]Jgib5328 0 points1 point ago

I put a plane on your plane so you can give me karma and make me feel better about myself.

[–]nubbled21 0 points1 point ago

It would be cool to see a picture from that hatch at the same time, The sun would be profiling the jet n stuff... Okay, back to Borderlands 2.

[–]Going_Braindead 0 points1 point ago

Or... Or its a jet pilot karma whore who positioned his jet there to claim perfect timing

[–]mbgt 1 point2 points ago

Considering that it was probably taking from the cockpit of the jet, it wasn't good timing. Just good positioning.

[–]RedditReid 0 points1 point ago

Who...who took that?

[–]Bolesy 1 point2 points ago

it would be more amazing if the shadow was facing the other way.

[–]gnarbucketz 0 points1 point ago

I'm guessing they were able to get the sun to hold still for at least a few seconds.

[–]MrXBob 0 points1 point ago

The planes are in formation... for a very long time. This wasn't even a "decently timed" photograph.

[–]Xet 0 points1 point ago

Uh, what has this got to do with timing? If they were flying at the same speed, that shadow could be cast for quite a long period of time. Especially considering that these are two military planes, I'm sure this situation is in fact startlingly common.

It's quite silly that of all the posts that I could see on /r/all that would lead me to this subreddit, it would be this one. Shame on you.

[–]tonybanks -1 points0 points ago

There is sun and the moon at the same time?!

[–]xconde 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure timing was a big one on this shot. The two planes are probably in quite stable routes and so is the Sun.

It's more of a neat spotting than amazing timing.

[–]Sundbork 0 points1 point ago

So what plane were you in?

[–]iTimmeh 0 points1 point ago

Amazingly timed? The fighter is most likely going the same speed as the jet. And the sun isn't moving that fast. This is just "in the right place at the right time"

[–]DoubleDutchOven 0 points1 point ago

Erect. Shun.

[–]Funkyfookarate 0 points1 point ago

KC-135?/KC-10A? They are stationed here.

[–]chilling_enthusiast 0 points1 point ago

Think how good it would be if it was in focus.

[–]rattlemebones 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit the shuttle fell off...

[–]smellit 0 points1 point ago

It also looks like a topless woman in the cockpit.

[–]ForgottenPhoenix 0 points1 point ago

Nice work. You even used the same title as I did in my post.
