Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Yosemite Valley at Dusk: A mist had settled over Yosemite Valley, as automobiles passed through, headlights illuminated the fog. (© Phil Hawkins/National Geographic Photo Contest)

[–]mjm8218 6 points7 points ago

Thanks for attributing the OP's photo. I immediately thought it looked like a Phil Hawkins shot. I met him one night at Tunnel View wihile taking this picture (shameless plug). We talked for about an hour and he was amazingly kind and helpful and his photography is quite spectacular - have a look.

[–]spyduhgirl 0 points1 point ago

It's so beautiful....what does it mean?.....

[–]Against1 55 points56 points ago

Yosemite is the best place on earth.

[–]neuromonkey 14 points15 points ago

I couldn't find the Starbucks.

[–]Jonny_Watts 6 points7 points ago

YOSEMITE LODGE HAS THE BEST COFFEE

[–]neuromonkey 7 points8 points ago

Well slap my collodion and call me Ansel!

[–]Melvar_10 1 point2 points ago

look for hanta :D

[–]neuromonkey 0 points1 point ago

Ha ha, it's funny because you want me to die.

[–]benhamine 2 points3 points ago

Just got back from a trip there last week...absolutely awe inspiring.

[–]cdawgtv2 2 points3 points ago

I live an hour from here. Always a fun mini-vacation.

[–]Spyrex 2 points3 points ago

fresno?

[–]TytaniumBurrito 3 points4 points ago

fresno represent!

[–]Haydenhai 1 point2 points ago

FRESNO! :D first time I've seen anybody say they live here on Reddit... everybody is ashamed. haha

[–]Spyrex 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I didn't say I lived there! I was just asking a question. There is /r/fresno though.

[–]Haydenhai 0 points1 point ago

:( r/fresno is full of slimey catfish. They're the epitome of lame redditors who talk about going to jazz clubs and greek fest... lol Fresno can be a drag, byt being an hour away from Yosemite, two hours away from Pismo beach, and about 5 hours to get to San Fran/ Sacramento and going south, LA- it's a great place to live!

[–]Melvar_10 -1 points0 points ago

dont forget the sequoias! but fresno is pretty crappy.... went there, made a quik stop to a mcdonalds close to a rally's, cops were in mcdonalds, hobo laying on floor, drunk ladies asking for quarters..... and it was a first stop....

[–]sdtp 1 point2 points ago

Oh my god yes.

[–]nillotampoco -1 points0 points ago

I don't know dude, went there this summer and was unimpressed with Yosemite Valley. Valles Caldera NM, IMO was prettier, saw a lot of mountains this summer, and this comes from my virgin opinion of never being at an elevation greater than 200 feet before.

[–]Melvar_10 1 point2 points ago

go climb el capitan

[–]Melvar_10 1 point2 points ago

just wanted to say kings canyon and sequoias are just down the road and have awesome things to see too!

[–]aherr01 1 point2 points ago

Glacier National Park gives it a run for its money.

[–]0piat3 9 points10 points ago

Both are amazing, but when you take that road down into yosemite valley and pass through that tunnel and look out into the valley - it is the single most beautiful, overpowering, jaw-dropping view you can experience. You literally turn a corner and it's all there. You've seen the pictures, but it does absolute no justice. Your eyes widen till they hurt and your mouth is sore because it's been open so long. I've been all over, seen plenty of national parks/mountains. But Yosemite punches you in the face with a turn of a road.

[–]theehill 2 points3 points ago

I'll admit it. I cried. Eloquently stated Opiat3.

[–]DrOwl 0 points1 point ago

At least since 2011, when British Columbia relinquished the title.

[–]TytaniumBurrito -1 points0 points ago

I live 2 hours away and have never been there. I feel like im missing out on an incredible experience.

[–]Fire_Man 1 point2 points ago

[–]Melvar_10 0 points1 point ago

dude, just drive there and enjoy some of the best views in california, however i would refrain from visiting for now seeing as there is a bit of a hanta virus outbreak there

[–]mcknazzy 8 points9 points ago

I've been in 17 countries. Yosemite is my favorite place of all time.

[–]whatthespicy 19 points20 points ago

I love Yosemite.. I go there at least once a year. California rules.

[–]Bradley_Manning 16 points17 points ago

Greatest state in the goddamn union.

[–]kezekiel 4 points5 points ago

Only place you can surf and ski in the same day.

[–]canaznguitar 4 points5 points ago

Washington, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, and Virginia beg to differ.

[–]interrorbang 0 points1 point ago

And Hawaii

[–]Melvar_10 0 points1 point ago

only place where you can, surf, ski, hike, and go sand duning in one day...

[–]canaznguitar 0 points1 point ago

California begs to differ.

[–]Melvar_10 0 points1 point ago

well that was FOR California lol

[–]csleigh8 2 points3 points ago

i won't ever leave....never!

[–]zinklesmesh -1 points0 points ago

I live here and disagree

[–]theehill 2 points3 points ago

Travel and you'll change your mind.

[–]MemphisVon 4 points5 points ago

Its ze fire worm!

[–]Ajajane 3 points4 points ago

13th Warrior! First thing I thought of when I saw it too lol.

[–]Philaholic 0 points1 point ago

verm*

[–]10GuyIsDrunk 12 points13 points ago

This is much cooler if you imagine the light is not from cars but rather from the lanterns and torches held by the many soldiers below, heading through the mountains towards a great battle.

[–]Haydenhai 3 points4 points ago

I like your style, boy.

[–]604Coast 5 points6 points ago

Pfft you fag, clearly that's a huge army of orcs holding torches..

[–]Osiris32 4 points5 points ago

It's cavalry.

I'd much prefer a dragon.

[–]sdtp -4 points-3 points ago

clearly drunk

[–]10GuyIsDrunk 7 points8 points ago

I guess I figured reddit was more imaginative and into fantasy stuff than it is.

Weird though with all of The Hobbit/LOTR pics floating around on the frontpage all last week.

[–]sdtp 2 points3 points ago

Haha I was just messing anyway

[–]buyacasha 1 point2 points ago

No no you guessed right, it just took us a while to get here and upvote.

[–]Wonspur 5 points6 points ago

Don't forget to breathe in that dust-filled hantavirus while you are there.

[–]iphonie 0 points1 point ago

I was in Yosemite about 2 days before that story broke. Luckily I'm not dead haha

[–]sassr 2 points3 points ago

You should post this to /r/exposureporn

[–]DominicDom 0 points1 point ago

Indeed he should!

[–]SBringer 2 points3 points ago

You know, I have "Clearing Winter Storm - Yosemite" by Ansel Adams on my wall. I always imagined the place looked almost as untouched in that pic as it does now day. I am kind of sad to learn there is a road cut right through that picture now.

[–]knivesashands 1 point2 points ago

The roads were there when Ansel Adams was around. You can 't really ever see them or tell they are there from 95% of the park. They are more obvious at night, especially in long exposure photography.

[–]ohbarf 2 points3 points ago

Azeroth....live action

[–]GoodAaron 2 points3 points ago

That's not mist... those are clouds of the HANTAVIRUS!

[–]iwidiwin 1 point2 points ago

I've never been there (unless I was so young I don't remember) and every time I see a photo of the valley I think it's untouched wilderness. Seeing now that there are roads that cut through it kind of makes me sad.

[–]knivesashands 1 point2 points ago

As I said elsewhere: The roads have been there for quite some time. You rarely catch a glimpse of them even from the valley wall. They become more obvious at night, especially in long exposure shots. If they weren't there, very rare a photograph would be, because it'd be a several day hike to the valley from the nearest access point.

[–]trottsky 0 points1 point ago

I felt the same way when i went there. That's the problem with a lot of us parks, before they were a national park they were a tourist attraction. I live in Victoria, Australia and fortunately we still don't generally allow private business into our parks.

[–]randybob275 2 points3 points ago

Looks like it is from Phil Hawkins. I can't find a higher quality image though.

[–]mjm8218 1 point2 points ago

Phil Hawkins. And you are correct.

[–]time2fly2124 2 points3 points ago

[–]armchairpessimist 0 points1 point ago

You didn't take this during a workshop, did you?

[–]qolop 1 point2 points ago

That looks magical

[–]samwicheses -3 points-2 points ago

Looks like processing.

[–]RDML 1 point2 points ago

Annnnd... New desktop background.

[–]Verteros 0 points1 point ago

Correction - This is a 1 millisecond still frame of the Flash passing by.

[–]KountChocula 0 points1 point ago

I cant see Halfdome...

[–]doggylog 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful.

[–]cb_dt 0 points1 point ago

This picture made me feel cold.

[–]einperson 0 points1 point ago

The mountains have features that look like tired memes. More snow will quash the scars.

[–]TheWierdAsianKid 0 points1 point ago

Even if it is artificial and man-made, it is still so beautiful.

[–]Efflux 1 point2 points ago

That's a cool photograph.

[–]DmagnusV 0 points1 point ago

Spectacular.

[–]only_eats_plankton 1 point2 points ago

That's a superb shot of the valley!! Great composition, execution, and lighting.

[–]GwaiLo_ -1 points0 points ago

damn, coming up with idea an idea like that must have made the photographer so giddy.

[–]Raviri 0 points1 point ago

The only thing it is missing is a dragon!

[–]mcknazzy 1 point2 points ago

I drove through Yosemite at night in a VW bug once. Do not recommend.

[–]Melvar_10 0 points1 point ago

lol dont drive through any national park at night! sequoias was very scary place at night

[–]nation4 1 point2 points ago

One of the most amazing places on Earth.

[–]dopestep 0 points1 point ago

looks like an ad for a new BF3 map

[–]i_are_pant 0 points1 point ago

Light pollution...The best kind of pollution

[–]604Coast 0 points1 point ago

That's amazing

[–]phenomenos 1 point2 points ago

I happened to be listening to Silt Sunrise from the Morrowind/Skyrim soundtrack when I clicked this. It felt very appropriate.

[–]thatkid13 1 point2 points ago

Possibly the only good thing about living in Fresno is that Yosemite isn't too far...

[–]maise 0 points1 point ago

Amazing!

[–]pikachu7821 1 point2 points ago

DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SKY

[–]sephferguson 0 points1 point ago

Wow that is an amazing picture.

[–]PresidentOfSomething 1 point2 points ago

I want to go to there.

[–]scroogish 0 points1 point ago

I need to be there immediately.

[–]ISlangKnowledge 0 points1 point ago

I tried doing this 8 years ago on film and ruined an entire roll of T-MAX 100. Much respect to the photographer here!

[–]guaranic 0 points1 point ago

Yosemite Valley is cool and all, but it's only a small portion of the park. Easy to get to, but still cool places are Vernal and Nevada Falls.

[–]theehill 1 point2 points ago

Worth every step of the hike. All of it is worth seeing for sure.

[–]guaranic 0 points1 point ago

Have you been to the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne?

[–]theehill 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but I did not spend as much time as I would have liked there. Future trips will be far more in-depth.

[–]downvote_kills_puppy 0 points1 point ago

It's de FEIYAH VERM!

[–]lalo4shalo 0 points1 point ago

Really nice picture man

[–]1barrybondsfan 0 points1 point ago

Where's Endeavor?

....not interested

[–]scatterfire 0 points1 point ago

is Yosemite Valley a good place to go in February? Partner and I are thinking of going there in Feb?

Will it be too cold?

[–]theehill 0 points1 point ago

http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/climate.htm There is some data and if you want to keep tabs on what the weather looks like, your live webcams are here:http://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/webcams

[–]mjm8218 0 points1 point ago

I've been there in January & June. I prefered January. The crowds are much smaller, the waterfalls flow, and the landscapes are prettier (IMO). Did I mention that the crowds are much smaller?

[–]goodofitskind 0 points1 point ago

It's always a good time to go!! The last 2 weeks of Feb you can see the "fire fall" next to El Cap from Horsetail Falls and there's tons of downhill, xc, skiing, snowboarding, show shoe hikes, ice skating, and general good times!!

[–]johnprattchristian 1 point2 points ago

Wait... that looks just like the Colorado fires haha

[–]Mafrver 0 points1 point ago

I never knew there was a road through there, I figured trails. Would be better without the noisy road.

[–]mpaffo 0 points1 point ago

neat. like a river of light.

[–]Otiac -1 points0 points ago

Those are not car lights my friends.

That is a fireworm.

[–]elbruce 1 point2 points ago

One does not simply walk into Yosemite.

[–]finallymadeanaccount 0 points1 point ago

Somewhere down there, Ewoks celebrate.

[–]koy5 0 points1 point ago

I would fuck that picture.

[–]namelesshero102 0 points1 point ago

What an amazing photo. Well done.

[–]chumpyis 0 points1 point ago

Every time I go to the park and come around the turn to tunnel view or step up on the tree in valley view i get chills. Simply one of the most unique outstanding places on earth. Hang out in the El cap meadow at night and watch the lights come on from the bivy's on the side of the mountain!

[–]CLITORAL_HARD-ON 0 points1 point ago

I've seen pictures of this place many times and NEVER knew there was a fucking road in there!

[–]tajoblue 0 points1 point ago

Just when you think it can't get any more beautiful.

[–]Danzaemon 1 point2 points ago

Mist? Maybe in Winter. But At night in the middle of Yosemite Valley on a Summer night, campers burn so many fires that the smoke is as thick as pea soup.

[–]Majorkerina23 0 points1 point ago

It reminds me of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire and the first time I read it. He hated that people came in their cars to national parks, felt that they were pumping excessive tourism in and ruining the treasures with roads. I have to wonder how it is now by comparison...

[–]Turpskadey 0 points1 point ago

The firewyrm...

[–]vgacolor 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the 13th Warrior movie based on "Eaters of the Dead"

[–]Putere -1 points0 points ago

Penis

[–]FuckIt_FineillJoin 0 points1 point ago

Also, I think you captured a shooting star in the background.

[–]Jonny_Watts 1 point2 points ago

As a Northern California resident, I have never even seen Yosemite at night because every time I've been there, it was just a drive-there-and-drive-back trip.

...#CaliforniaResidentProblems

[–]mrp00sy -1 points0 points ago

I recently learned that Yosemite is pronounced yo-seh-mee-teh and not yose-mite.

[–]randybob275 2 points3 points ago

Everyone I hear it from pronounces it yoh-sem-it-ee.

Source: I live in Oakhurst, CA

[–]Bradley_Manning 1 point2 points ago

hah! I grew up in oh-cursed. went to OES, OCI, and YHS. all on the same damn road. worked at Erna's in high school and spent many a hot summer day at bass lake. Beautiful place if not much to do as far as urban activities are concerned.

[–]0piat3 2 points3 points ago

Yoh-Seh-Myte?

Where the hell are you from?

everywhere in the US it's Yo-Seh-Meh-Tee

[–]Rrrosie 0 points1 point ago

Does not rhyme with Vegemite. I had the same problem.

[–]elbruce 0 points1 point ago

What? It's in this guy's name. How could you not have heard of him?

[–]DICKSUBJUICY 0 points1 point ago

Oh the beauty of roads and traffic. This area would be even more beautiful 24/7 without a road and traffic slicing through its gut.

[–]The_Nigger_General 0 points1 point ago

ISENGARD. THE ENTS ARE COMING!
