I love unlisted videos. They make me feel like I'm seeing something I shouldn't.

[–]Deluxx00 18 points19 points ago

They make me feel like I'm a VIP

[–]PhoneDojo[S] 57 points58 points ago

Also this video if you want some background

[–]DaaraJ 12 points13 points ago

Also, if you have Netflix there is a great documentary on the tests called Radio Bikini that is amazing.

[–]ssb_baktha 7 points8 points ago

[–]kroatia04 5 points6 points ago

and don't forget Trinity and Beyond.

[–]Zachary9 13 points14 points ago

Perfect! A video the exact same length as the gif. Was kinda hoping to see what happened to the boat but this is just as good

[–]chamanbuga 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone read the more info? Hot dayam did the dude do his research!

[–]ThesePantsShafe 198 points199 points ago

The amount of water that explosion displaces, and at such speed, is mind boggling.

[–]NaughtyNellie 98 points99 points ago

And this was "only" an 8 Kiloton bomb. Imagine what a large hydrogen bomb with a TNT aequivalent of up to 100 Megatons would do.

[–]Bobloblawlawbomb 31 points32 points ago

Perhaps you would be interested in the Soviet's Tsar Bomba? The source of the light is a detonation roughly 2.5 miles above the ground, for some serious perspective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwlNPhn64TA

"Although simplistic fireball calculations predicted the fireball would impact the ground, the bomb's own shock wave reflected back and prevented this.[9] The fireball reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane and was seen almost 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from ground zero. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 kilometres (40 mi) high (over seven times the height of Mount Everest), which meant that the cloud was above the stratosphere and well inside the mesosphere when it peaked. The base of the cloud was 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide. All buildings in the village of Severny (both wooden and brick), located 55 kilometres (34 mi) from ground zero within the Sukhoy Nos test range, were destroyed. In districts hundreds of kilometers from ground zero wooden houses were destroyed, stone ones lost their roofs, windows and doors; and radio communications were interrupted for almost one hour. One participant in the test saw a bright flash through dark goggles and felt the effects of a thermal pulse even at a distance of 270 kilometres (170 mi). The heat from the explosion could have caused third-degree burns 100 km (62 mi) away from ground zero. A shock wave was observed in the air at Dikson settlement 700 kilometres (430 mi) away; windowpanes were partially broken to distances of 900 kilometres (560 mi). Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage at even greater distances, breaking windows in Norway and Finland. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth.[10] Its seismic body wave magnitude was about 5 to 5.25.[9] The energy yield was around 7.1 on the Richter scale but, since the bomb was detonated in air rather than underground, most of the energy was not converted to seismic waves. The TNT equivalent of the 50 Mt test could be represented by a cube of TNT 312 meters (1023 feet) on a side, approximately the height of the Eiffel Tower."

[–]leo2308 8 points9 points ago

'windowpanes were partially broken to distances of 900 kilometres'. What thats nuts.

[–]Dave_Hedgehog 1 point2 points ago

For a sense of scale, that's the entire length of Britain, from Brighton to Durness.

[–]Basilisc 39 points40 points ago

Destroy the earth.

EDIT: Whoops, that would take 100,000,000 megatons. But 100 megatons could definitely fuck shit up.

[–]sdpr 9 points10 points ago

Came close to almost seeing that.

[–]GothicFuck 6 points7 points ago

So 100,000 kilo tons, I'm getting confused with all the changing prefixes.

[–]Flipperbw 8 points9 points ago

kaaa...mee...haaa...mee...

[–]Andy284 2 points3 points ago

And if you were on that boat you'd be like "Oh shit!". The water was so high up and just came crashing down brutally.

[–]Coxspeach 16 points17 points ago

Mankind has come a long way from sticks and stones

Then words like "swag"and "yolo" make me think otherwise.

[–]Delta_Pavonis 119 points120 points ago

Really? It's silly words of all things that make you think otherwise?

[–]NonKosherTofu 71 points72 points ago

It makes you realize what we truly are. We are only slightly more intelligent than we were in the stone age. The only difference is that we have constantly compounded our knowledge over time from generation to generation, ensuring that the brutes that follow us are better equipped than the ones that are now.

[–]shortbusoneohone 8 points9 points ago

But as a race, we're no different than the beginning of time. If we had no history, we would make the same mistakes as those in our past did. It's the craziest paradox, but it's great to think about.

[–]nooknstuff 11 points12 points ago

Well said.

[–]git 8 points9 points ago

For my part, it's the weapons and explosions that make me think otherwise.

[–]Queefaroni 2 points3 points ago

So profound.

[–]randomnumber37 0 points1 point ago

Yes, not only that but it is boiling hot and radioactive.

[–]pop_tart 402 points403 points ago

R.I.P. one million fish.

[–]Ragnarok022 31 points32 points ago

I think... there were more than a million dead fish.

[–]BigSwedenMan 24 points25 points ago

Blast waves propagate further underwater, so you're probably right. If you've ever seen a video of someone fishing with dynamite, or even m-80's, they'll kill fish at a further range than they would animals of equal size on land.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]angrylawyer 15 points16 points ago

also water doesn't compress like air does, so the energy from the explosion doesn't dissipate as quickly.

[–]FeatherGrey 3 points4 points ago

But at the same time, radiation can't travel nearly as far in water, at least still water.

[–]myfavoriteweapon 26 points27 points ago

Why were they just recording the pigeon?

[–]Kamakazi1 9 points10 points ago

That scared me intensely for a couple milliseconds.

[–]sigbox 3 points4 points ago

...what...HOW?!

[–]MadroxKran 14 points15 points ago

It's used to having buses around and knew it was going to miss. Birds have a higher eye refresh rate (like frames per second) than humans do by a lot. It sort of doesn't seem as fast to the bird.

[–]unwanted_puppy 5 points6 points ago

I think it might be fake. There's a moment when the pigeon disappears in the shadow of the bus a little to completely.. but I'm not sure. I've always wanted to watch it in slow-mo.

[–]gbimmer 10 points11 points ago

Check out this time lapse video of all the nuclear tests done on the planet between 1945 and 1998. Scary as fuck.

Edit: Not just tests, actually. It has Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well.

[–]theENTofDAZE 14 points15 points ago

TIL I need to move.

[–]Skateboard_Raptor 13 points14 points ago

This really shows the cold war in it's prime in the 50'ies. Whenever one side tested a bomb, it seemed the other side responded with twice as many. Quite scary really.

[–]jooni81 11 points12 points ago

that's....pretty amazing

[–]iamasupersaiyan 25 points26 points ago

Why am I not dead?

[–]BadWombat 7 points8 points ago

This is a good find. You should almost post it to /r/videos or something. Or maybe that's where you got it.

[–]Hoodooz39 13 points14 points ago

Wow, it's amazing that the entire US west coast is not obliterated!

[–]Morgansaur 6 points7 points ago

Most the tests on Us soil were small yield and underground. The big shit we usually set off over the ocean.

[–]alaskade 3 points4 points ago

This is simply incredible. Frightening and sobering as well. Wow.

[–]misterraider 8 points9 points ago

This can't get enough attention.

[–]hyper73212 274 points275 points ago

This is how Bikini Bottom was formed. Bomb was detonated in Bikini Atoll and all surviving aquatic life are now mutated into talking animated characters.

[–]cptrooster 6 points7 points ago

Did somebody just shoot that pressurized tank in the shark's mouth?

[–]Guy_with_an_opinion 12 points13 points ago

that was fucking cool.

[–]snooplionylion 12 points13 points ago

Wouldnt that make a tsunami?

[–]warlockghost 46 points47 points ago

Nah, just some wicked waves for prolly a mile or so. A tsunami is caused when a tectonic plate rises/falls a few inches/feet, causing the entire ocean above it to flow away to accommodate the new dimensions. As that wave travels, it maintains (more or less) and even gains strength and depth, even though the ocean floor gets shallower as it approaches land. This here is the equivalent of a fishing lure hitting a pond; ripples for a little bit, but the shore never knows it happened.

[–]brawr 17 points18 points ago

It's amazing that nuclear bombs still don't mean shit compared to the energy released in those huge tsunami-spawning earthquakes.

[–]warlockghost 6 points7 points ago

I think, to be honest, that nukes are weak by comparison due to brilliant minds purposefully limiting their power, individualy that is.

Ever read the "Halo" books (based on the extended universe in the games by Bungie)? The books talk about The Covenant" (the enemy) "glassing" planets for which they have no use, with massive ship-based plasma cannons. We don't have that kind of tech yet, however, there are three (I believe) nuclear subs in the US navy armada, that carry a combined 30+ nukes, each one fully capable of almost completely destroying New York state...and those 30 something nukes are only a fraction of the 9000+ warheads (2000+ operational) that the US has, and nothing compared to the 22000+ the that exist in the world.

To wrap this up, mother nature can really screw shit up from time to time...but we can remove the earth from the solar system. Just a little scary in my opinion.

[–]alieninfiltrator 3 points4 points ago

but we can remove the earth from the solar system

Not. Even. Close. http://qntm.org/destroy At best, we could destroy all life but the Earth ain't going nowhere.

[–]Deadsquirrely 1 point2 points ago

I just spent the last half hour reading that. It was fascinating.

[–]MatterMass 8 points9 points ago

The mechanics are all different, and things like earthquakes that do produce tsunamis are a few orders of magnitude more powerful than nuclear bombs link.

[–]MrGMinor 4 points5 points ago

That is the most terrifying thing I have ever seen.

[–]gbimmer 3 points4 points ago

Makin' it RRAAAIINNN!!!

[–]AAKurtz 4 points5 points ago

Every whale within 300 miles just went deaf.

[–]Vranak 4 points5 points ago

  1. After seeing this, can you blame Iran for wanting nukes so bad? Especially when their chief rivals (US, Israel) already have them.

  2. Video fidelity seems really good for 1958

  3. Check out this really cool video of a nuclear explosion taken from overhead, never seen anything like it.

[–]CookPu 7 points8 points ago

That ship was all like, "IDGA...... FUHHHHHHHHH-UCK!"

[–]hermit1808 6 points7 points ago

Was it really necessary to sacrifice a ship for that?

[–]IrinotecanHCL 43 points44 points ago

These underwater nuclear tests were typically designed to gauge the effectiveness of detonating a nuke in the middle of a fleet of ships, to see if they could wipe out the fleet with just one nuke. The ship was likely decommissioned and due for scuttling anyway, so they placed it a certain distance away from the blast to see if it would be sunk by it.

[–]zero_cool1990 9 points10 points ago

IIRC a good number of them were captured Imperial Japanese ships.

[–]TiagoWilson 12 points13 points ago

For the lols, yes.

[–]warlockghost 7 points8 points ago

Those tests are to see how well a fleet could survive a nuclear torpedo. A similar test was conducted with something like 10 ships by the US in the 40s/50s, and I think the result is something like the ships flailing around violently, some even rolling over, then bobbing back up unscathed. War ships are fucking resilient as hell. They have to receive direct, fatal damage to be disabled. This is anecdotal, but I think I read somewhere that even the massive US Navy aircraft carriers can roll pretty much bottom side up and will right themselves and be fine.

[–]Bandalo 7 points8 points ago

If by "fine" you mean, "will still float for a while". A 360 roll on a carrier will destroy every aircraft onboard, shut down the reactors, and destroy a good portion of all the equipment. Not to mention probably killing or injuring almost every crew member.

[–]warlockghost 14 points15 points ago

I didn't say all hands would be on deck, triumphantly displaying the one-finger salute...

[–]Jay_Normous 3 points4 points ago

Let's say theoretically you could survive in the center of that blast. Would you just be in a void in the ocean with all of the water blown away before the hole gets filled up?

[–]KRSFive 2 points3 points ago

"Oh that boat is going to get covered in water. Any second now...any second...right? Maybe not. OH YEAHH!"

[–]feralmeatball 3 points4 points ago

This kills the ship

[–]warlockghost 3 points4 points ago

Not unless the actual blast physically damaged the ship. War ships are built to be able to roll almost completely over and then just bobble back upright.

[–]SomeDudeFromJersey 2 points3 points ago

"Don't press the red button, huh, I wonder what it do...."

[–]4D4M5 1 point2 points ago

[–]Captain_Kab 1 point2 points ago

the good old days when we just blew up nukes for fun.

[–]holey 0 points1 point ago

Are there permanent negative environmental impacts to these sorts of tests?

Obviously, any animals in the blast are probably dead...but are their long term impacts similar to other nuclear blast sites?

[–]CzarKurczewski 1 point2 points ago

This seems let a good example of why we should avoid nuclear war. Too many dead fish.

[–]justjrom 1 point2 points ago

"I think we're going to need a bigger boat..."

[–]CoolMcDouche 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if the make a wish foundation can provide me a front seat to another underwater nuke explosion if i get terminal cancer one day.

Actually, it's a whale leaping out of the water and flying home to the moon.

[–]Tri-Beam 0 points1 point ago

[–]nooknstuff 1 point2 points ago

Question: wouldn't the amount of radiation caused by the nuke create some serious consequences once it's released in the ocean?

[–]ander594 1 point2 points ago

The true story of what happened to Nemo's mom.

[–]Karl_with_a_C 0 points1 point ago

[–]spaceadventurer 0 points1 point ago

I would shit myself on that boat.

[–]JustMadeYouYawn 0 points1 point ago

I'm still wondering how we haven't killed ourselves yet.

[–]tailboys1 0 points1 point ago

thats amazing!

[–]Chunga_the_Great 1 point2 points ago

This really puts the power of a nuclear weapon into perspective better than just a picture of a mushroom cloud. That thing is a fucking freighter, and it's tiny compared to the blast of water.

I remember this video from a trailer of some metal album, now I can't remember what band was it. Does it ring a bell for anyone ?

[–]Gardoom 0 points1 point ago

I've heard this is the exothermal reaction that occurs as Francium meets water. Is that true or is it really a nuclear blast? (The Alkali metals are highly reactive and just a few grams kan blow bathtubs into smithereens, however this is quite an explosion...)
