Actually can anyone using Ios6 in the London/greater london areas tell me what it's like? I've purposefully held off updating because of the horror stories. I rely on my maps quite a lot.

[–]AtomicDog1471 42 points43 points ago

I heard typing "London" brings up "London, Ontario"

[–]tvon 24 points25 points ago

Canada, fuck yeah!

[–]itsmesofia -1 points0 points ago

Not for me.

[–]zogworth 19 points20 points ago

can you not reinstall google maps afterwards?

[–]gigabates 40 points41 points ago

Nope. You can use the web version, but there's no Google Maps app in the App Store yet.

[–]no_egretsSussex 24 points25 points ago

To elaborate, the Maps app on iOS has always been developed by Apple - it's just previously used the Google API. They've redesigned it from scratch for iOS 6, and are using their own maps (from a variety of sources, including OpenStreetMap if I recall correctly).

[–]LeoPantheraOxford 10 points11 points ago

If they are using OSM they must have intentionally removed detail because OSM is bloody brilliant.

[–]fortfunWest London -1 points0 points ago

[–]LeoPantheraOxford 0 points1 point ago

EDIT: Er, no. This article is about the iPhoto map and is from months ago. The iOS 6 map does indeed mention OSM along with a long list of other sources.

[–]gigabates 16 points17 points ago

So yeah, Google may well release a native app but they'll have to develop it from scratch. In fact they may choose not to for now considering all the bad PR this has generated for Apple.

[–]MachiniOsNottingham 22 points23 points ago

They'll probably wait then play the hero.

[–]tdrulesLancashire 0 points1 point ago

They make more money from iOS than they do on Android so I don't they're taking their time

[–]TalesOfFan 6 points7 points ago

Is that really true? I know there are more Android than iPhone users.

[–]tdrulesLancashire 1 point2 points ago

[–]Skitrel 3 points4 points ago

In turn, the comparison of total Android revenues from the court documents suggests that iOS has so far generated more revenue for Google than its own handset ecosystem.

"Suggest" is not a valid citation, it is a speculation.

[–]hoobeyjoobs 1 point2 points ago

It's probably true, but there's lots of ways of valuing worth for a company than just profit. Both Google and Apple have considerable profit to spend at their disposal so this mobile platform war isn't just about who's making the most money every quarter. It's also to secure a position as the dominant player in the fastest expanding market in technology, which secures future revenue streams, branding, guarantees longevity, just about everything.

Consumers decisions to go with iOS or Android could significantly impact the overview of the tech sector 10 or 20 years from now. It could make the difference between one of them eventually going bust and the other not (don't snicker, it's happened to so many giants before and the tech world is so fast moving that any company who takes their finger off the trigger for just a moment will rapidly feel it. Just look at Microsoft trying to play catch up now. Would that even have even been conceivable as little as 10 year's ago).

[–]I_Pee_Sitting_Up 5 points6 points ago

I think you misunderstand. Google has a fully functional mapping system, they don't need to redevelop anything.

[–]gigabates 3 points4 points ago

They don't have a native iPhone interface for it though. Apple developed that previously as no_egrets pointed out.

[–]I_Pee_Sitting_Up 1 point2 points ago

Developing what amounts to a skin for iOS6 isn't that difficult. The real work is in the mapping itself. Google probably coded this in under a week.

[–]Pandalicious 14 points15 points ago

Google probably coded this in under a week.

I cannot stress how much that underestimates how much effort goes into designing and developing a good UI.

[–]Skitrel 2 points3 points ago

They already have a good UI that can be copied from their Android navigation app or their Android Google Maps app.

Why are people forgetting that Google already have an app for this on android devices? This is merely a matter of porting what they already have.

[–]Train22nowhere -1 points0 points ago

Designing is the hard part, if you know exactly what you want to do developing a good UI is fairly quick. And considering all they need to do is recreate things from the app version (either the original IOS maps or their android one), it won't take long.

[–]IneffablePigeon 6 points7 points ago

what amounts to a skin

No. An entire UI for a complex application is not a "skin". The testing alone is probably weeks of work. I'm sure Google probably already has finished or nearly finished their own implementation, but it will have taken them a lot more than a week.

[–]slow_reaction 1 point2 points ago

The testing wouldn't require weeks. The most time expensive types of tests are user acceptance tests and those aren't really necessary in this case because they already have a UI design in production running on the Android OS. Porting this to iOS wouldn't be very difficult for a handful of experience iOS developers which I'm sure Google has access to. They could probably get the base code written in a day and then have 6 days for cleaning up bugs.

TL;DR - Since there's already a maps app in Android porting it to iOS could take as little time as a week.

[–]I_Pee_Sitting_Up -4 points-3 points ago

I said it amounts to skin, meaning that it's the smallest piece of the puzzle. Mapping has taken years and is a continual work in progress.

[–]slh314LONDON 2 points3 points ago

Google have submitted their own Google Maps App to the App store, it's awaiting approval. Apple's call.

[–]Glasweg1anGlasgow 2 points3 points ago

Evidence?

[–]slh314LONDON 6 points7 points ago

it came to me in a dream...

[–]medaleodeon 1 point2 points ago

I didn't think of it like that. This could easily force me onto Android.

[–]tmutton 1 point2 points ago

I believe that Tom Tom are providing some features/content through a licensing agreement.

[–]Karl_Marx_ 1 point2 points ago

Open source apps. Android.

[–]cobrophy 0 points1 point ago

Apparently Google have submitted a their maps app and are awaiting approval.

[–]B_the_Raven 6 points7 points ago

Well Google already applied a native app to Apple for google maps, but I guess you'll have to wait a bit more.

Source: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1448009

[–]zogworth 6 points7 points ago

I don't think they're in any hurry. It probably plays to their long term goals to be seen as the "saviour" from apples "incompetance"

[–]tmutton 0 points1 point ago

I would download that app in an instant. GMaps is the best mapping tool out there and although Google might have made their own for IOS, I don't think Apple will be approving this any time soon. Not until they solve their own problems anyway..

[–]dafuq_978United Kingdom 6 points7 points ago

Don't worry about it, you can use Google Maps in the browser. It even offers to add a home screen shortcut, in which case it isn't anymore effort than using the original app, and is still very responsive. Google Maps still very much usable.

[–]gravey727 4 points5 points ago

You cannot see bus stops any more for a start :/

[–]one_random_redditor 2 points3 points ago

The maps just aren't as easy to view. For instance you have a little train symbol the seems to represent underground, overground and train stations so you have put your finger on it to see what it is. They should just use the TFL standard symbols to make like easier. Also all roads are the same colour or follow the American road colouring system which obviously is reversed (green being motorway etc).

I'm not anti apple and I'm sure the map content will improve but if you really use google maps a lot just wait for a while. The website version dies work but is slow.

ps the London Transport map is so much better anyway.

[–]bottomNew Zealand 0 points1 point ago

It works well in London. For me anyhow. It's easier to read, use than google maps. Although I understand the frustration others are having, for me it's fine

[–]fortfunWest London 1 point2 points ago

it's terrible, i wish i never did it

[–]hoobeyjoobs 2 points3 points ago

It's not that bad. Not as good as Google used to be, and no transit is pain, but it sounds like other major cities got it a lot worse.

For the record I haven't actually used it to navigate London thoroughly, just had a quick go around. There didn't seem to be any major discrepancies that I noticed.

Still as I said, much preferred Google. It looks nicer maybe now, but there isn't nearly so much information as readily available. You have to zoom right in to get names of smaller streets which is a downright pain.

[–]EskimoRanger -1 points0 points ago

I went out at lunch to buy an iPhone 5 and flipped on maps to find the phone shop, usefully the map rotates to show you which way you're facing instead of having to request the compass as before. Found it pretty handy.

[–]d1zz0rz 24 points25 points ago

*overground

[–]chemosabe 23 points24 points ago

Wombling free.

[–]Jazzspasm 0 points1 point ago

Wimbledon Common is now in the Peak District and is called Battersea Power Station

maybe

[–]danielroseman 19 points20 points ago

Pretty sure that's London Overground, actually. It's talking about the Gospel Oak - Barking line, which was previously the Silverlink.

I hate that kid sooo much...

[–]Drag0nflamezEuropean Union 2 points3 points ago

This can be pretty much everywhere on the Overground, because it can also be H&I to Crystal Palace. But this is Hackney Wick. (source)

I laughed until I realized I just updated last night...

[–]freecris 9 points10 points ago

I love you, londoners.

[–]thechivsham 2 points3 points ago

Credit for this needs to go to @binny_uk

[–]PeskieEngland 1 point2 points ago

Should be posted in the Apple forums :)

Made me grin!

[–]ninjames 1 point2 points ago

I'm not traveling for the next 6 months, but if I was, I'd be hella pissed. Google Maps is the reason I don't get lost like a tourist whether it's leaving out off Kingscross or Midtown NY...

Sometimes I forget people who work for public transport have a sense of humour.

[–]usedtowork -4 points-3 points ago

very clever, redditor with a marker

[–]you_sir_are_wrong -4 points-3 points ago

I thought you meant London Underground, makers of fine recreational tablets

[–]waseldo 0 points1 point ago

Still ?

[–]Vauce -3 points-2 points ago

I'm not sure why this is clever... I believe in iOS6 the formerly Google now Apple maps does not show many of the schedules and routes that Google Maps shows. Until Apple integrates them in, or they get the schedule through other means, it is now more difficult for iOS users who have upgraded to navigate public transport.

[–]one_random_redditor 11 points12 points ago

Google maps used to work out the public transport links for you. In iOS 6 it doesn't. That's the joke.
