I seriously don't understand how someone could let an ingrown toenail get to such a state before seeking help.

[–]Turel 2 points3 points ago

As mentioned elsewhere, and from personal experience, it's a mixture of both denial and procrastination. Males, in particular, are very keen to avoid seeking medical help for such things.

And often lack of $$$ (in the US). My husband has this (not this bad, but pretty damn bad. He maintains them well despite the condition of them. Cannot afford surgery. We just deal until maybe someday we can.

[–]TrMark 0 points1 point ago

Ah I often forget that other countries don't have free health care. From all the stories I hear of people not being able to afford treatment and having to suffer or perform home surgery makes me think that the american healthcare system is just wrong but that's only my opinion.

EDIT: Just used america as an example, I know that other countries don't have free healthcare too.

[–]GirlMeetsHerp 0 points1 point ago

It is definitely wrong.

[–]goldheavy 2 points3 points ago

oh, oh. i got one... i double dog dare you to suck on it.

[–]xxXX69yourmom69XXxx 5 points6 points ago

I just had a small surgical procedure to prevent this today. Ugh mine was bad but this is just over the top.

[–]fapchop 4 points5 points ago

pics or gtfo

[–]xxXX69yourmom69XXxx 1 point2 points ago

Currently collecting pictures for an album post.

[–]fapchop 0 points1 point ago

... and?

[–]xxXX69yourmom69XXxx 0 points1 point ago

Almost done, waiting for something sick to happen like gangrene or bubonic plague to make it /r/wtf worthy.

[–]alteffeight 0 points1 point ago

I had a procedure years ago as well. Mine never got that bad, but my mother was on top of things and drained the infection as much as possible early on. Now, both of my big toes have no edges, all the way down to the roots. They collect a lot of sock fuzz though. Pretty easy to make people skeeve out by just jabbing something pointy in there and scraping it all out.

[–]j_chenks 2 points3 points ago

How does one allow this to happen!?

[–]bikemaul 1 point2 points ago

Probably no insurance combined with denial and procrastination. Some people let tumors and cysts get huge before treatment too.

[–]j_chenks 2 points3 points ago

Ah yes, American health care.....mind you, I suppose that would be the lack of?

As a Canadian, id be at a doctors office pronto.

[–]Theodore_Brosevelt 0 points1 point ago

I had something similar, but only on one side of my toenail. It was a hangnail, popped it out, and promptly forgot about it. Next few days were busy, didn't do maintenance on my feet, and when I realized it looked kind of bad, I thought that if I just cleaned it off, it would be fine. The infection got worse, and it took almost a solid month to really clear up, and looked like shit the whole time. Surprisingly easy to almost lose a toe.

[–]bbkpoker 2 points3 points ago

When I was 19, broke and had no insurance and no one to borrow money this happened to BOTH my big toes simultaneously although the swelling wasn't as bad as this one, it was probably about half the swelling that had on each side. My insurance for my company finally kicked in, scheduled dr appointment immediately, turns out my insurance only covered 20% because our company picked a horribly shitty plan. Foot doctor was pretty nice about it, he clearly felt bad for me, and he mentioned having a couple kids who loved yugioh, and coincidentally I worked for a small company that sold it online, so I brought him some hard to find Japanese packs and he let my broke ass pay $100/month and only charged me like $1800 for the whole shebang. Seemed like a lot to broke me at the time, but in retrospect, I'm pretty sure that was basically charity for him.

[–]nSquib 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck can anyone let their toenail go this long without doing something. I mean that's months of pain and infection there.

[–]SaucyTyler 6 points7 points ago

I had an ingrown toenail for six years before I did anything about it. I finally convinced my mom to get me surgery. (I was 16 at the time). Its not fun. At all. Especially when people accidentally stepped on your toe.

[–]Charleybucket 1 point2 points ago

I have dealt with ingrown toenails my whole life, but I've never had anything close to this. This has gone way too far.

[–]MrHatebreed 1 point2 points ago

Everytime i'm wondering why people like those just don't visit a doc earlier .. why ?

[–]EmptyParad0x 0 points1 point ago

Money/Time

[–]MrHatebreed 1 point2 points ago

Money could be yes , in countrys without health care for sure .. but time ? Seriously ?

[–]BaumFrosch 1 point2 points ago

Nice... I click on it, expecting an exposed bone a snapped finger or something else just as painful. No,I find a pus filled toe. OP It's nothing personal but, I hate you. The last time I felt like throwing away a perfectly decent cup of tea was the broken knee from a few months back. Thank you.

[–]wwertje 0 points1 point ago

Been there with 8 toes, hè needs surgery after That, it Will heal

[–]Zeeboon 0 points1 point ago

As someone who regularly has to rip little pieces of his nails to prevent this, I shuddered with terror..

[–]bikemaul 0 points1 point ago

Worst part is that toes have a lot of nerves and tissue this infected does not get numb very well.

[–]Etet565 0 points1 point ago

dude, iv had it 3 times this year. im not very good at taking care of my nails. it keeps coming back, i might have to remove the roots

[–]Turel 0 points1 point ago

Wear your shoes only as long as absolutely necessary. Good, well fitting footwear is essential. The problem may be down to the shoes you are wearing - perhaps try a new pair for a long period.

[–]Turel 0 points1 point ago

The inflamed flesh into which the nail is cutting is referred to as hypergranulation. Granulation occurs in order to heal wounds and is a perfectly normal process whereby excess tissue is formed to cover a wound until it heals. In the case of an ingrowing toenail, however, the nail is constantly cutting into the tissue, meaning it is not able to heal and thus the granulation of the skin continues. The image posted is an extreme case of this. I can also assure you that the smell is horrendous.

Edit: Just wanted to clarify that I speak from personal experience. I suffered a double hypergranulation, though not as bad as the original pic. I severely NOPED at the idea of surgery after having watched videos and decided to opt for conservative treatment which involved a stick of Silver Nitrate - a caustic substance which would burn away the excess flesh. Although I was told that granulated flesh wouldn't have a nerve structure, that was simply not true. Even after copious amounts of whiskey - which I had to have before starting the process - the pain was intense. I've since spoken to chiropractors about potential treatments and the best suggestion was to crush aspirin (anti-inflammatory) and mix with manuka honey, then apply. It should help with the swelling and pain.

TL;DR: Inflamed areas are due to hypergranulation. And speaking from personal experience, it sucks.

[–]LapinDeLaNeige -1 points0 points ago

You spoke to two Chiropractors?

The biggest quacks in the "medical" field?

Who aren't even real doctors? ooookay

[–]money4212 0 points1 point ago

So by the look of your other toenails you never knew you supposed to trim them? Bet you had a pretty good limp to go with that?

[–]bigdaddydrew77 0 points1 point ago

I had ingrown nails as well. Did lots of procrastinating. Ended up going to doc several times, getting needles in the toe and nails cut out and each time told they wouldn't come back but they did. Dealt with it for nearly ten years. Got to the point I couldn't ride my motorcycle as the shifter hurt too bad on my toes.

Salvation came to me one Christmas from a visiting uncle. I don't even remember how we got talking about it but he informed me of a little-known remedy he found somewhere.

Simply clip a "V" into the center of your nails about as far back as you can comfortably go. Best he could guess on the reasoning is that the nail spends it growth effort filling the "V" up instead of growing into the sides of your toe. I really don't know but after a trying it I never had another problem going on 10 years now.

I was literally depressed over it because it was painful, the treatment was even more painful and it always came back. Maybe bad doctors, maybe bad feet, maybe bad shoes...I don't know, but this trick kept me from slitting my wrists!

[–]madagent 0 points1 point ago

Send a couple guys from r/popping to take care of this guy.

[–]suite307 0 points1 point ago

I had a tiny ass infection and it hurt like hell. That must deny him the Power to walk.

[–]OMROKER 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the others aren't far behind...

[–]mtux96 0 points1 point ago

I thought mine were bad.. this is seriously ingrown with a side of fungus.

[–]narwhalsatmidnight -1 points0 points ago

I really think r/popping would enjoy this

[–]punchthings 4 points5 points ago

If you attempt to pop an ingrown toenail, you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]BitterDivorcedDad 0 points1 point ago

Getting the pus out is pretty awesome, though.

[–]punchthings 1 point2 points ago

Hurts like a motherfucker if you put any pressure on it haha

[–]BitterDivorcedDad 0 points1 point ago

Oh absolutely. And once the pus and blood and plasma is out, you realize just how much it has been hurting.

[–]Turel 0 points1 point ago

I can assure you that an ingrown toenail of that magnitude would be agony when touched.

[–]atvrider 0 points1 point ago

If a butterfly landed on that it would hurt like fuck.

[–]Turel 0 points1 point ago

[–]RNHdb25 -2 points-1 points ago

that looks sufficiently abscessed

[–]LeCherLich -3 points-2 points ago

NSFW tag would have been nice

[–]punchthings 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure what it is you were expecting, browsing r/wtf.

[–]BitterDivorcedDad -1 points0 points ago

There's plenty of wtf out there that's neither NSFW nor NSFLunch.
