[–]mnhr 302 points303 points ago

I heard that Google makes a maps app that's pretty good.

[–]Venexis 79 points80 points ago

For the benefit of passengers using iOS6, there's more competent phones pretty much everywhere.

[–]neomicron 135 points136 points ago

For the benefit of passengers, you have a fucking browser that loads google maps just fine.

[–]rawrleorawr 19 points20 points ago

I think the joke is misunderstood, an important feature that apple looked over was the public transportation option. You could use it to look up different routes to get to your destination.

iOS 6 neglected to do that, and since most 3rd party applications are garbage, commuters are forced to use actual schedules and maps.

[–]FreshFruitCup 10 points11 points ago

Oh this is bullshit. My iphone is updating next to me... And I regretting this decision with every comment I read... Is this the same for the ipad? No street view or pub transit in maps?...

[–]kwood09 8 points9 points ago

It's supposed to seriously suck based on what I've heard. Google Maps has been submitted to the App Store though, and unless Apple has its head completely up its ass, it should be approved shortly.

[–]tapo 12 points13 points ago

Apple kept Google Voice stuck in the app store submission process for 16 months so I wouldn't put it against them. Apple is exactly the type of company that would block Google's product to force people to get used to Apple Maps.

[–]JMV290 4 points5 points ago

To be fair, Apple blocking Google Voice was back when AT&T was the exclusive carrier and most likely had more to do with AT&T being greedy (why pay for a texting plan if you get free texting through GV) than Apple being anti-competitive.

It happend with a few apps back then (mostly calling and texting apps) and still occurs with "Wifi only" voice features on different carriers and phones, including Android devices.

[–]tapo 1 point2 points ago

If this were true, Apple would have blocked Skype (which is a much bigger competitor) or the myriad of other texting apps that were available. It also doesn't explain why Google Latitude was also blocked around the same time.

[–]JMV290 1 point2 points ago

IIRC Skype was blocked or severely gimped back when the app store first launched. Apple being dicks probably is an explanation for things like Latitude but I'm pretty sure most of the VOIP and Texting services were requests by AT&T.

I remember the issue being brought up constantly in reddit's daily anti-apple circlejerks back when the app store first launched.

[–]AKBigDaddy 0 points1 point ago

Att wouldn't have cared. They lumped messaging with the iPhone data plan

[–]JMV290 0 points1 point ago

At the time or now?

I haven't owned an iPhone in over 3 years but I recall texting and data being separate back in 2008.

[–]keddren 1 point2 points ago

I've heard (grain of salt, etc) that ios6 maps also drains the battery quite rapidly.

[–]FreshFruitCup 0 points1 point ago

Just installed... Steve jobs would NOT have approved this based on the font and the design alone.

[–]keiyakins 3 points4 points ago

[–]FreshFruitCup 0 points1 point ago

I have both an android phone and the iPhone 4S -- through all the grief and being both a pc and a mac person, the iPhone is just a far more elegant user experience. Not mucked up or confusing in any way. So for me the iPhone squeaks by.

But I'm also a cartography fan... And this is an abomination.

[–]urabunch0fassholes 0 points1 point ago

Same goes for iPad.I manually updated once I saw it was out.I live in a smallish town (130,000) and the 3D view is a fucking joke. Also, half the streets in my area aren't even named.Thankfully I have a non Apple smart phone.

[–]FreshFruitCup 0 points1 point ago

I live in Chicago, and with traffic on it's stalling out. Plus it's not as easy to look at (as if you were driving and glanced over). The public transit is gone, which is evidence Steve Jobs is really dead, because they wouldn't have forgotten that over his dead body.

[–]YouHaveShitTaste 77 points78 points ago

just fine

lol. Compared to a dedicated gmapps app, using it in a browser is utter shit.

[–]TeBags 32 points33 points ago

Plus no street view, which I actually use quite often.

[–]awesomeideas 0 points1 point ago

For the benefit of Mr. K there will be a show today.

[–]serrimo 4 points5 points ago

Do they have the three gees?

[–]lmth 0 points1 point ago

GGGG infact

[–]pseudonym1066 1 point2 points ago

Would 'Good Guy 4G' be GG GGGG or GGGGGGG?

[–]ubna 1 point2 points ago

you should ask in /r/ggggg

[–]pseudonym1066 1 point2 points ago

I can't believe that this actually a thing. Can anyone tell me where the phrase "...is a thing" came from by the way? I seem to hear it a lot on the interwebs these days.

[–]wasabijoe 1 point2 points ago

Because of you, I have now learned of the awesomeness that is guyjcollins. Thank you.

[–]neilz4 1 point2 points ago

This is fucking gold

[–]Azr79 0 points1 point ago

and cheaper

[–]Scrilla 3 points4 points ago

Google should take their sweet time releasing the iOS version of the Google Maps app. They said they plan to release one in the future, but right now you have to use the HTML5 version through safari to use Google Maps.

[–]ew73 3 points4 points ago

Google has apparently already submitted the iOS6 version of Maps to Apple for the App Store.

The running theory is it's still in limbo, like Voice was for a year.

[–]susdev 1 point2 points ago

Apparently they've been doing it for awhile.

[–]samsaBEAR 48 points49 points ago

Every Underground worker I've had dealings with are miserable as sin, but somehow I've seen loads of these funny billboards, it can't be the staff writing them!

[–]rooch84 21 points22 points ago

Did you watch TV series The Tube? It turns out a few of them have a sense of humour.

[–]moshbeard 8 points9 points ago

I quite enjoyed that programme, I never really considered just what an epic undertaking it is to keep the underground network running smoothly all day everyday.

Now I'm a bit more understanding when there are delays or other problems because I'm now aware what a good job they've done when it is running fine.

[–]rooch84 2 points3 points ago

Couldn't agree more. It really helped to paint the picture of just how much network there is out there to maintain.

[–]samsaBEAR 1 point2 points ago

Can't say that I have, what channel was/is it on, I'll look it up online

[–]samsaBEAR 0 points1 point ago

Much appreciated!

[–]rooch84 2 points3 points ago

My god! I think I've just had a conversation on reddit that doesn't involve trolling, playing devil's advocate, or just plain correcting someone.

[–]yuze_ 0 points1 point ago

One of my friends works in the UG and he's the funnest guy you'd ever meet, but he's more in the office/managerial position alongside being on the floor which isn't as depressing as those solely on the floor (as in, the shittiest part of the job). He's also one of the guys who writes these message and is pretty tech savvy, he sits in the office browsing reddit half the time.

[–]kylemore 63 points64 points ago

Clearly a photoshop. District line with good service?

[–]PinballBob 7 points8 points ago

Why does everyone hate on the district line? I get it every day and it is fine. Although I do accept if you are unfortunate enough to be on the Wimbledon branch then perhaps your complaints are valid.

[–]AEJKohl 2 points3 points ago

I take Southfields>Earl's Court>Gunnersbury every morning and the same backwards every evening and it's not that bad. Sitting is for wimps anyway.

[–]JA24 1 point2 points ago

Sure better than Piccadilly Line, Acton Town--->Earl's Court morning ain't so bad, but, going back from work, at 5.30... ಠ_ಠ

[–]pascalbrax 0 points1 point ago

Damnit! Been in London just 2 times in my life (Gloucester Road) and I hated the District line, too!

[–]PinballBob 0 points1 point ago

Ha that's where I live. I get on there everyday - I always get a seat both to and form work - really don't see the problem.

[–]Coroare 0 points1 point ago

The seat's not the problem! We did a circle line crawl once, and ended up walking most of the way because it broke down every five minutes :(

[–]PinballBob 2 points3 points ago

I never defended the circle line.

[–]pascalbrax 0 points1 point ago

Wow, this is probably the first time I got another redditor so near to where I was.

[–]catfriend 0 points1 point ago

Or the Putney Bridge branch, or the Richmond branch. And what about Kensington Olympia.

Or when it rains heavily and you can't get west of Chiswick.

[–]PinballBob 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I don't live that far west.

[–]catfriend 0 points1 point ago

Ooh fancy. Or Acton.

[–]PinballBob -1 points0 points ago

Qui?

[–]catfriend 0 points1 point ago

Bum

[–]getmoneygetpaid 0 points1 point ago

When I live in London around 5 years ago, it was officially the least reliable line. The trains were also old and less frequent than other lines.

[–]PinballBob 0 points1 point ago

I think it really depends where you get on. Past earls court I get that it sucks but in zone 1, where I live, it is absolutely fine; train every 1-2 mins and there are hardly ever delays.

[–]PinballBob 1 point2 points ago

The northern for sure has that crown now.

[–]groovejet 0 points1 point ago

Bakerloo line trains have to be the worst, besides it smells like farts, no wonder why it is the brown line on the map

[–]PinballBob 0 points1 point ago

I find the central smells like those scenes in museums or such where they purposely make it smell bad to make fell like the times.

[–]Firerain 11 points12 points ago

Nah, London Overground. Their performance is usually a lot higher than the other underground lines (especially district).

[–]arronsmith 3 points4 points ago

I believe this to be Hackney Wick.

[–]deletecode 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like a legit place name in england.

[–]caresaboutkarma 28 points29 points ago

Train etiquette. Super simple stuff.

[–]serdnaderf 7 points8 points ago

OP's investment in dry erase markers is finally paying off.

[–]AdamLovelace 38 points39 points ago

It's funny because Apple is going to take it personally and make a series of videos about how their maps are just as good or better than Android's.

[–]mattindustries 26 points27 points ago

They won't, because their maps never have been. Even when Apple used google maps, they didn't have biking directions like Android. If there is ever a <4" screen, thin android phone with nice specs I will probably switch.

[–]BloodyMess 7 points8 points ago

I was extremely worried about my Evo 4G LTE's 4.7" screen before I got it, but it turned out to be a nonissue.

I thought it'd be massive and ungainly. But by reducing the bezel and lengthening the phone (and not widening it, like many other phones), it's actually extremely comfortable. I often do use it two-handed, but it's usually just for certain tasks. I am very comfortable holding it one-handed for most tasks, such as reading, browsing, etc.

And the screen is...just beautiful. The Galaxy S3 gets all the press because they sell more, but the HTC One X / Evo 4G LTE screens are just about perfect 720p IPS, pretty much 180° viewing angles with no color degradation, brilliant saturation, black levels, etc. (Randomly: The MicroSD slot helps, too--it's nice carrying around 80GB for about $200 less than what you'd pay in Apple tax.)

I know it feels like a smaller screen is going to be easier to use, and that may be true at least a little, but I mean this as kindly as I can: you may severely limiting your choices because of preconceived notions about larger screens.

[–]mattindustries 0 points1 point ago

My roommate has a droid, and I use it on occasion when we are out. I really am not a fan. I am not a fan of the iphone's increased size either though. I don't like things in my pockets as it is. Last night when I went out to dinner I ended up keeping my phone in my sweatshirt's jersey pocket (pocket that takes up the back of the sweatshirt) because it was better than having it in my pocket. The OPPO Finder would probably be the droid I would use, as it is pretty thin, and not much heavier than the 4s. I don't know anyone with it though.

[–]Proditus 12 points13 points ago

Give it a good month, I'd say. We're due for a new Nexus soon.

[–]Quazz 18 points19 points ago

Nexus will definitely be >4"

[–]manwithabadheart 1 point2 points ago

Unless the rumour is true that there will be multiple, then they might make a small flagship and a large flagship.

[–]Quazz 0 points1 point ago

There will be multiple, but all of them will be large.

[–]jsstaedtler 1 point2 points ago

And none will be QWERTY. :-(

[–]_Meece_ 5 points6 points ago

Galaxy S2. It's about 4.2 inches, but it's an excellent phone.

[–]cmmts 3 points4 points ago

HTC One V? HTC Desire X?

[–]laddergoat89 2 points3 points ago

Mid range devices.

I like him want a top tier device without a mammoth screen.

[–]JLBeiiJ 5 points6 points ago

Of course they can alway cram more hardware into a bigger device. Therefore the smaller models will never be the "top" model.

[–]laddergoat89 4 points5 points ago

All they tend to cram in is a bigger battery. Processors/RAM don't suddenly jump in size.

[–]FireReadyAim 0 points1 point ago

The SoC does jump in battery usage with performance, though. The Galaxy Nexus is BARELY usable with an 1,850mAh battery.

[–]Jigsus 2 points3 points ago

They used to be. 10 years ago top range was the smallest phone.

[–]cmmts 2 points3 points ago

Out of curiosity. What would you like to have that those devices don't have. More storage and a better camera, but what else?

[–]laddergoat89 -1 points0 points ago

Better displays (they often have lower tier displays), better specs, on Android high specs are more needed than iOS because the OS is less optimised.

Also support, the mid ranges are generally supported for less time. Having said that I'd buy nothing but a Nexus if I switched to Android, but I wouldn't want a massive Nexus.

[–]cmmts 3 points4 points ago

Verge on the One V display:

"As mentioned before, it’s only 3.7 inches — relatively small when compared to some of the enormous handsets we see today. However, it’s bright, sharp, and vibrant, without a hint of pixellation to the naked eye. It’s also laminated to the glass front, making for superb viewing angles: even when viewing it from almost 85 degrees there’s no color shift, and text remains sharp and legible.

The actual panel is a 480 x 800 LCD unit, giving it a pixel density of around 252ppi. That’s a long way behind the 312ppi of the One X's display, but in practice I’m hard pressed to see any real difference. "

I don't necessarily agree that these devices don't have the necessary performance. Android is pretty good with ICS and JB.

[–]special2plumsfor1 0 points1 point ago

Go buy an HTC Incredible. More or less the same size as the iPhone, and it can run a more advanced operating system (Android 4.1 Jellybean)

[–]FireReadyAim 0 points1 point ago

While I don't fault your desire for a smaller device, I'd suggest at least playing with an SIII or similar if you haven't. I got used to my Galaxy Nexus very quickly, and I have fairly small hands.

[–]bibowski 1 point2 points ago

But there will be a 'dramatization' note at the bottom of the video to cover their wild, untrue claims :-D

[–]savinger 15 points16 points ago

Protip: use Google's Local app.

[–]DallasDrive 13 points14 points ago

Man, Apple fucked up pretty bad. Google, you're our only hope

[–]asdermaster 5 points6 points ago

Nokia-maps is pretty good, I'd dare to say better than Google, at least where I've used it. Anyone remember Nokia any more?

[–]rynthetyn 5 points6 points ago

The plus side of Nokia's maps is that they're optimized for parts of the world where there's not unlimited data plans. My Nokia world phone was great while traveling around Asia getting ridiculously lost this summer, especially because the battery life was so good, but in the US where I have unlimited data I prefer my Nexus.

[–]Wiki_pedo 2 points3 points ago

I loved Nokia Maps! The way I could download only the bits I wanted (provinces, counties, etc), plus Own Voice was pretty fun. Too bad my N97 took ages to find my location, if at all.

[–]sexdrugsandponies 1 point2 points ago

Vector maps are a nice touch, and being able to download them for offline use is great. Turn by turn navigation is decent too. Only problem is, it's completely useless in rural areas, since it doesn't distinguish between major and single-track roads. Google maps is much better on that front (though even Tomtom and Garmin have issues!).

[–]rahulthewall 1 point2 points ago

Sure, lots of people do. I use a Nokia N9 and I am noticing an increasing number of Lumias around me (Switzerland). Nokia Maps are amazing.

[–]Fussolia 1 point2 points ago

Nokia Maps on any device with HTML5: maps.nokia.com

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

They've submitted their own maps app to the app store.

[–]Jigsus 0 points1 point ago

How does that work? Won't apple have to pay licensing to them?

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

...why would they do that?

It's a map app, there are loads of map apps on the store. There's google earth already. Tomtom etc...

[–]nmpraveen 0 points1 point ago

Thats basically the whole point of Apple maps.. Google reportedly increased the licensing rates and also started showing ads on iOS.. Thats the reason 4sq also left Google maps.

[–]Jigsus 0 points1 point ago

So how can they just offer them as an app for iOS? Aren't they back to the licensing problem?

[–]listentomyfarts 0 points1 point ago

License what? There are >700,000 apps in the App Store. Do you think Apple has to pay a license for each app?

[–]jsstaedtler 0 points1 point ago

Apple sets the rules for all apps submitted to their store, and I'm pretty sure they'd stipulate that Apple can incur no costs for services those apps provide.

Hell, I'm pretty sure Google has to pay Apple (if only $200-something for the app developer license).

[–]doctorgirlfriend84 2 points3 points ago

I'm confused. Can you explain why they fucked up?

[–]zaphod_85 0 points1 point ago

Not paying much attention to the news lately, huh? Here's one story explaining some of the hullaballoo, just search for "Apple iMaps problems" to find a nearly unlimited flood of articles showing just how badly Apple has screwed the pooch. I've been an iPhone user for years, but this debacle has me reevaluating my brand loyalty.

[–]doctorgirlfriend84 0 points1 point ago

Ah thanks for the info. And no, I've been busy so I haven't been paying attention to the news.

[–]cody_au 21 points22 points ago

As an Australian we never had good maps support (and no turn-by-turn navigation) without using a 3rd party app. So, it has made zero difference to me.

tl;dr First world American problems.

[–]youlane 41 points42 points ago

The mapping on Android in Australia is excellent. I thought they we're about the same up until iOS6? Minus turn by turn of course...

[–]Xirious 9 points10 points ago

I'm confused by what is meant by 'turn-by-turn'. I use Google Navigation on my HTC DHD often and it tells me exactly when to turn at every turn (exactly like a GPS would). I'm from South Africa so that may be the difference but I would (naturally) assume that Australia had this feature long before SA.

[–]Chumkil 4 points5 points ago

Turn-by-turn uses voice to tell you when to turn and recalculates when you miss a turn. Google maps for iPhone did not do this.

[–]nmpraveen 0 points1 point ago

Google maps for iOS recalculates but doesnt use voice to tell which turn to take..

[–]NinjaViking 0 points1 point ago

It's an enormous desert, what is there to map?

[–]richalex2010 23 points24 points ago

This is from the London subway system - London, UK, as in across an ocean from North America. It's not an American problem, Apple's maps are shit everywhere.

[–]georgy11 8 points9 points ago

What are you talking about, I'm Indian, google maps works great for me everywhere in the world. From the US to India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines. I'm very reluctant to upgrade to iOS6 because google maps has probably saved my life more than once. I'm in Singapore right now and its traffic data is sooo accurate. I believe Apple Maps doesn't even have traffic data where white people don't live. I've been an Apple Fanboy since before the iPod but I'm really torn, i really need google maps.

[–]Quazz 0 points1 point ago

Google will attempt to put a Google maps app on the itunes store. The real question is if Apple will allow it or not.

[–]TimmyFTW 10 points11 points ago

Fuck you I also live in AU and the Maps app prior to iOS 6 was amazing compared to the current Apple one.

[–]euphoriaflow 6 points7 points ago

Not just America. A lot of places are having it rough with iOS6, Japan being one.

[–]nmpraveen 3 points4 points ago

As a Indian I dont give a fuck about maps because here there is no 3G pretty much everywhere.. And If i had to use my maps in my current cellular connection (which is 56kbps), It would take an eternity to reach the destination.. Seriously, I use offline maps like Syigc which has mapped all nooks and corners in India and much better than gMaps or iMaps.

[–]NOLFXceptMe 2 points3 points ago

Nonsense. Depends on where you live. In Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, and almost all along the NH7 connecting Bangalore-Hyderabad, I have amazing 3G connectivity. Even in remote towns (maybe Jadcherla is not that remote).

[–]nmpraveen 2 points3 points ago

All the place you said will be less than 1% of total India's area.. Lets be real. You will being using maps mostly in the place where you are outside city, Where you have never been before.. Those place don't have 3G.. And even if they have, they cost very high..

[–]NOLFXceptMe 1 point2 points ago

Right, I'll agree with you wrt 3G.

When I went to Goa the first time, I just had 2G, and could navigate the place perfectly fine. I think I took heavy objection to your "I don't give a fuck about maps." They're brilliant, mate.

[–]frymaster 0 points1 point ago

Which is why you can cache areas of the map in google maps

[–]nmpraveen 0 points1 point ago

Yeah they introduced that few months back.. Good to know..

[–]Intrepid00 2 points3 points ago

If you had turn-by-turn support it would just try to kill you by sending you the wrong way down a one way street.

[–]Artemisian11 -1 points0 points ago

Speak for yourself! Google Maps in Australia is yet to fail me (though that's mostly for Sydney use). Can't speak for the navigation, I hate the concept in general and just prefer a good old-fashion map.

[–]norsurfit 1 point2 points ago

Instead of turn-by-turn in Australia, they have maps of the local poisonous snakes and spiders in your neighborhood.

[–]cody_au 0 points1 point ago

You would be surprised how safe it is here. The most dangerous thing in Australia is shit-fuck-crazy housemates. We have all of them.

[–]FireReadyAim 2 points3 points ago

There are 34 words on the sign, and two of them are "London", yet you still managed to assume this was in America. Lazy cunt.

[–]whiskey06 0 points1 point ago

There is a Tube app. But those maps are pretty brilliant, I was able to get around London for the first time using it.

[–]GrinningPariah 2 points3 points ago

What blows my mind about the whole thing is that Apple seemed to just flick that switch behind the scenes, Gmaps to Apple maps, and figure no one would notice the change from the entrenched king of mapping to some shit they cooked up in a couple years.

To put that in perspective, Microsoft has been cooking Bing Maps since 2005, with a budget of over 5 billion dollars, and it's only just now starting to be competitive with Google.

[–]AustimusMaximus 7 points8 points ago

Used the new apple maps to drive from Vegas to L.A. And back today for the first time. Hit a few shops, Longbeach and the highways without a wrong turn.

[–]the_palest_gopher 26 points27 points ago

You hit a few shops?!? I don't think you could even blame that on apple maps.

[–]daviddesousa 4 points5 points ago

you need new glasses, neither google or apple maps can help you avoiding hitting stuff when you drive

[–]JavaLSU 0 points1 point ago

I have minor issues with the maps app, but I mapped out several long trips that I take semi regularly (long meaning 600+ miles). And it did a good job with the mapping.

[–]jelloburn 1 point2 points ago

I think the issues people are having are more in other countries, where the data is either inaccurate or just missing. Also, traveling long distances hasn't been the issue. My 4 year old TomTom (with just as old map data) can still get me from one state to another with little to no hassle. It's finding businesses and points of interest that Apple Maps has had issues with.

[–]Black_Apalachi 2 points3 points ago

I'm still rocking a Sony Ericcson k550 and what is this.

[–]ResidentWeeaboo 1 point2 points ago

Apple marketing is ingenious. Who else can sucker people into buying junk, then change it slightly and sucker all those same people again. Bonus: the people still don't know they're suckers and defend the scammer.

[–]ElectricG 2 points3 points ago

They will build monuments to your bravery.

[–]Xyls 0 points1 point ago

Good Old Boris!

[–]Peil 0 points1 point ago

It says there's an airport in some lad's field

[–]eatmorerice69 0 points1 point ago

why is "on" highlighted on the bottom left? is there some wordplay i'm not getting o.o

[–]buckygrad 1 point2 points ago

Man is this horse getting tenderized.

The places I have been and the random things I have seen because I used maps on an iphone... Ended up driving a van on a single lane mountain road for 2 hours because it took me the wrong way.

Of course, the board they've written that advice on is otherwise primarily used to advise travellers whether and where they have a good service for a change.

[–]sexi_squidward 0 points1 point ago

Said from the local weirdo obsessed with Apple: "Downloaded iOS6 it's amazing so far !!!!!!!"

I asked what was amazing about it...no response

[–]whitcliffe -1 points0 points ago

you motherfucker. stop reposting my shit, its annoying as fuck.

[–]nebbish 0 points1 point ago

There's a tradition of humerus notices on London Underground, long may it continue

[–]ninfan200 0 points1 point ago

I've had no problems with apples map app

[–]keanoo 1 point2 points ago

Steve Jobs must be turning in his iGrave.

[–]TimelordVagrant 0 points1 point ago

I haven't had the chance to use it yet. Can anyone explain to me why the update is so horrible?

[–]Agnostalypse -1 points0 points ago

Literally have never installed an apple update. I'm like...13 versions behind on iTunes, and my iPhone has the same iOS it had when I got it 2 years ago. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

[–]1mistakecharly 0 points1 point ago

why would you update the software before waiting for reviews is beyond me...

[–]314R8 0 points1 point ago

It's not a failure, It is cleaner, simpler to understand and magical

Who needs numbers, geographical information when you can have a clean screen with minimalist information

[–]PLUS_SIZED_SLUT -2 points-1 points ago

Can we go one day without a front page anti-Apple post? You guys sure talk about something a lot that you apparently hate.

[–]BimbelMarley 1 point2 points ago

It's only been two days now, it seems like an eternity on the internet but in two days we'll be over it and the whole thing won't have lasted a week.

[–]DJanomaly 2 points3 points ago

I've been traveling due to business. What about iOS6 maps?

[–]Kitosaki 1 point2 points ago

can someone explain to me why google and apple cant play nice when it comes to a google maps app for iphone?

[–]laddergoat89 6 points7 points ago

Both are at fault.

Apple want to control everything themselves and not be beholden to Google.

Google didn't provide the full maps experience for iOS, no turn by turn and various other features.

So Apple made their own (by buying some companies) and Google are releasing their own maps app to the store.

Once the maps app arrives all will be right with the world again.

[–]Kitosaki 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]extraspicytuna 1 point2 points ago

You are incorrect on one thing - the iOS maps app was not Google's, it was coded and maintained by Apple. *edit (clarify): coded and maintained by Apple using Google APIs.

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

Yeah but google provided the content, and don't provide/allow many of the better features.

[–]extraspicytuna 0 points1 point ago

Which features do you think Google didn't provide? Just curious because they obviously provided search, tiles and routing, just wondering what you think they held back on. Vector data maybe?

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

3D, vector, offline and most importantly, turn by turn.

[–]extraspicytuna 0 points1 point ago

Well, TbT is a client side solution, and could have likely been implemented since routing instructions were available in the original maps app. I have always wondered if it was google not allowing access to the vector (and therefore 3d) data or simply apple not using it, maybe not wanting to get in too deep with gmaps on ios. What do you mean by offline?

[–]laddergoat89 0 points1 point ago

Offline as in the ability to select areas of map and take them offline, TbT is more than just directions, there's a whole interface and set of data for it.

Al of these things require you to plug into APIs, some of which must be licensed, some of which were not licensed.

[–]extraspicytuna 0 points1 point ago

Sure but I mean, the routing / directions api are available to all (once licensed) - while vector data, at least last time I looked, does not have an api. What I am saying is that it seems weird to me that google would not license these publicly available apis, even to apple - while for vector data, I could see them deciding to not provide an api (since there isn't one already).

[–]DrMonocle 2 points3 points ago

Steve Jobs was very emotionally driven. When Google came out with Android he felt personally betrayed since he saw it as a rip-off of the iPhone. This soured relations between the two companies.

Tim Cook seems more cool-headed, but this map project has been in the works for years.

[–]Kitosaki 0 points1 point ago

Thanks.

[–]Iggych23 1 point2 points ago

Just download Transit and shh

[–]zabimaru1000 -2 points-1 points ago

I am never upgrading to iOS 6 unless:

1) I get any Android phone that is similar or better than the iPhone.

2) Apple Maps improve on par with Google Maps (bus transit, location accuracy, etc).

3) Google and Apple somehow become friends again and implement Google Maps again.

[–]AKBigDaddy 0 points1 point ago

What does an android phone have to do with your decision to upgrade to ios6?

[–]mrfoyl 1 point2 points ago

I guess Apple has to start changing the roads until they match their map....

[–]EvilClownMafia -1 points0 points ago

The amount of butt-hurt Android vs. Apple downvoting in here is pathetic

[–]jonnyclueless -5 points-4 points ago

Google went through the same thing when they first started doing maps. Everyone laughed at Google maps as Mapquest was the big game in town at the time.

But alas, Reddit is really just a glorified high school social system where everyone has to jump on the bandwagon like good little lemmings, the flavor of the year is ragging on Apple. Anyone could do the same thing to any company out there, but this is the trend for everyone to follow if they want to pretend to be cool.

[–]pascalbrax 4 points5 points ago

OK, so today I'm starting a new Digg clone, let's abandon reddit awesomeness and move to the new digg 2.0.

Its sucks? Well, so did reddit at the beginning.

It's ok Apple need some time to figure it out correctly, but why don't just keep google maps and work on ios6 maps in the background? Why should customers upgrade from ios5 to ios6 and have an huge downgrade in maps features?

[–]the_palest_gopher 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I agree google maps weren't the best when it launched 7 years ago (2 years before the iPhone) but its improved to be the best mapping service around and to make customers use and depend on it for 5 years and then replace it with an inadequate solution is just not good for the company or the consumers.

[–]pciamps 0 points1 point ago

So strange that most anything I've read on here that's actually a mature, valid response or someone's personal OPINION are the ones getting down voted.
