Here in Scotland jobbies is another word for shit. Fuck going to Jobland.

[–]felipec 3 points4 points ago

It's called the rest of the world. You there's a world out there, right? It's not soviet Russia, you can go somewhere else if you don't it there.

[–]sivablue 46 points47 points ago

Drove by McDonald's today. They are hiring. Get into your fucking job cannon and apply there.

[–]altshiftM 5 points6 points ago

I dunno man, they just finished patching up the last five holes in the wall...

[–]Teddyholden 3 points4 points ago

There are so many jobs available everywhere I look the only thing is a lot of them are general labor or service jobs, and most people just aren't willing to work those jobs. They think that they are over qualified since they went to college so they shouldn't have to work a job that someone with a high school education can do.

That or they will say living off those jobs is impossible which is only true if you fall into the group of people that think they NEED to have an iphone or a $100 phone bill so they got a good data plan. They aren't willing to live within their means. I still rock a flip phone with no internet access, I don't need the internet on my phone I'm already on it way too much at my house.

[–]Capitol62 8 points9 points ago

As a recent law school graduate waiting for bar results and currently stocking shelves in a liquor store to pay rent, I was turned down from several low level service jobs because I was over qualified and they knew I didn't intend to stay more than 2 months.

It happens.

[–]onesidedsquare 2 points3 points ago

Hard to want to work at a job that doesn't even pay a living wage.

[–]Teddyholden -1 points0 points ago

Really depends what you define as your living wage. If you work enough you can live off of minimum wage and still maintain free time/social life. You may not have all the luxuries and electronics, but you'll have food shelter and clothing.

Source: Countless people I know, and me at one point.

[–]sivablue 0 points1 point ago

Nice. I still rock the flip phone as well. I've had the same plan almost ten years now. The great thing is, my provider keeps grandfathering me in as long as I don't change it. I have unlimited talk for $14.99 a month. No texting but... 'eh, who needs it?

[–]Vegall_st -4 points-3 points ago

This. THIS. I don't like Romney but dammit, he's right about this. There are already jobs there. People just need to TAKE them. (although he's supposedly got some plan to create 12 million jobs or something)

[–]psykiv 6 points7 points ago

There are jobs out there. I have a friend that has spent four years looking for a job and she hasn't found one, and she has master's degree. I'm sorry you studied something not in demand, and you only want to apply to places within 10 miles of your house because you don't want a long commute. But of course since her mommy and daddy pay (including her tuition, all of it) for everything and give her spending money (she's like 30) she has no incentive to look.

Now another friend. She busted her ass working part time, supporting her parents, and herself, and on top of that going to nursing school. She graduated as a nurse, she lost her part time job for some random shipping company. She realized rent I need to pay rent next month or I am fucked. She called every single contact she had, blasted her resume everywhere, did I don't even know what. 16 days later she is now working a Junior buyer for the South American division (here in Miami) for a VERY large electronics company I can guarantee you have at least one thing made by them in your house, right now. She had the incentive and need to find a job. She found one, quick. Couldn't find a nursing job even with a license? No problem! Found something else!

[–]youastar 52 points53 points ago

Fuck... please keep all the Romney hate buzzwords on /r/politics please.

[–]XM10ADefiant 12 points13 points ago

Agreed, Keep this crap where it belongs.

[–]awesimo 8 points9 points ago

[–]kikenazz -5 points-4 points ago

Better yet.. Don't post anything that could possibly be disliked by another redditor. Better yet.. Get bent.

[–]Workhorse9 14 points15 points ago

There are jobs, but they aren't desk jobs where you surf the internet all day.

[–]psykiv 1 point2 points ago

I think I just tagged you as BFF. My partner and I recently hired three more people. We just couldn't keep up with the amount of calls and the amount of work that was piling up (and really, his job is better suited to selling, my job is better suited to making sure everything stays organized and everything is where, when, and how it needs to be)

Their job? Cushy office job? Hell no. Break some concrete, dig gigantic holes, then stick a couple hundred thousand dollars in equipment in those holes. Today I had two of them build a gigantic rack inside a 100F warehouse while the other one was out on the street collecting equipment to repair. Even me, that I'm the co-owner, I was there driving around a fork lift for a little while moving stuff so we can finish the project a little faster.

We really don't need someone to sit in the office and take calls. We already have one, she's great, we don't need another.

[–]JankBoy 2 points3 points ago

As someone who was unemployed for an extended period of time, I call bullshit on this. I finally started my own business because nobody would hire me.

A friend of mine works in HR. A couple weeks ago they listed an entry-level menial labor position. They received 2,000 applications. I live in a fairly small town.

You hired a few people. Good for you. You know those pictures they post where someones throwing a drinking glass full of water at a blazing fire? That's the best analogy I can come up with here...

[–]St_Lambchop 1 point2 points ago

I have a desk job and I STILL don't get to surf the Internet all day.

[–]Kageyn 9 points10 points ago

Since when was this r/politics?

[–]jonny-english[S] 3 points4 points ago

Saw that after I posted. Won't happen again. But politics these days are pretty funny.

[–]penis_lad_man 0 points1 point ago

Dude apologizes, everyone shits downvotes. I seriously don't get reddit sometimes.

[–]Ktmouse 6 points7 points ago

hey jonny-english, read the fucking sidebar

[–]brianm314 4 points5 points ago

Link if anyone wants to see the clip.

[–]Ecchiphilia 2 points3 points ago

I read the words as if Charlie was actually talking.

[–]apullin 1 point2 points ago

You must be terrible at things. There's 10 jobs at Tesla alone I could walk into tomorrow if I wanted to ...

REPOST

[–]4thearth 2 points3 points ago

The 47% are the people who found a way to make a McDonalds salary by doing absolutely nothing but opening the mailbox. I don't like his religious views or personal life, but god damn do I love him more for stating the ugly truth

[–]yAMiDED 7 points8 points ago

so let me get this straight, you oppose the guy saying get a job only to put the guy who has done nothing to improve your situation back in charge... well that will work.

[–]NegativeGhostrider 8 points9 points ago

My problem with Obama is that his policies are essentially enabling a good majority of those out of work to NOT look for a job. Free money kept coming in so they kept taking it because they feel like "it's the government's responsibility to take care of me and it's not my fault I'm unemployed."

Yeah, I was unemployed for near a year but I kept looking for one because I wanted to and because I started getting very depressed not feeling like I was contributing to my wife and my income. My neighbor was in the exact same situation and had been laid off for a few months before that. He had no motivation to look for a job because they kept extending his benefits. All he'd do is just go surf, travel, and submit a few BS job numbers on his UI sheet and they'd keep extending it for him.

[–]Rivantus 3 points4 points ago

you know that system is in practically all western european countries. And they have it so people can still live without having a job, you dont get money indefinitely though the government has laws that require you to search for jobs, and if you dont then you get cut off.

[–]NegativeGhostrider 0 points1 point ago

Read my comment. All my neighbor (and myself if I wanted to) had to do was submit some BS numbers of places I'd interviewed. My neighbor would keep submitting phone numbers and info but with the influx of a HUGE amount of people looking for work I doubt that the job would keep his info if they'd ever checked up on it. The UI office might call and they'd tell them that they've had hundreds of applicants and there was probably a good chance he applied but can't go beyond that. And for that he still got a free paycheck and go do what he wanted.

[–]UncleTogie 0 points1 point ago

There are limits on extensions. Which state you live in?

[–]NegativeGhostrider 1 point2 points ago

California. This was a couple years back and they kept extending the benefits for people that were laid off before the limits were in place. I could have done that for myself if I wanted.

[–]Zallomallo 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for posting an alternative viewpoint/opinion. It makes me a little bit happier to see comments that typically are incongruous with the typical reddit style be upvoted.

On topic, this is one of my big political points. Making financial aid enough to help those who really do need it, while still incentivizing innovation and hard work.

[–]DrDPants 1 point2 points ago

Many Americans do seem to feel that very little financial assistance is the best way to help job seekers. Its definitely at odds with most other countries.

It's an interesting cultural stance.

[–]somepromethean 1 point2 points ago

We can't let the U.S. turn into Greece. That would seriously fuck up the entire world.

[–]ItsameKristie 0 points1 point ago

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/09/charts-47-percent-romney-tax-data This should clear things up. The 47% are not just a bunch of freeloaders. They consist of a lot of different situations.

[–]sage_of_majic 2 points3 points ago

I was gonna say, Charlie isn't exactly the poster boy the 47%

[–]nealski77 2 points3 points ago

That's because he has a job. He's a phil... phillan... phull on rapist!

[–]Agent_B 3 points4 points ago

Been saying this for a while now. The 47% includes retired social security etc.

[–]Jman5 0 points1 point ago

Get a job Grandma, or it's off to the glue factory!

[–]ItsameKristie 0 points1 point ago

A lot of people don't do their homework :/

[–]christophla 1 point2 points ago

Actually, both of those guys are multimillionaires.

[–]growonlittlejobbies 0 points1 point ago

I feel obligated to say something here...

[–]jonny-english[S] 0 points1 point ago

Removed after 2,894 upvotes and a genuine apology for overlooking rule in a sidebar? It's a fair cop, I suppose. And my first good and bad experience with reddit. Onward. Good conversation though and no apologies for contributing to the conversation. Politics is funny - we need to laugh at it to survive it.

[–]rikashiku 0 points1 point ago

I'm looking for a handjob, where I get to use my hands on the job.

[–]TyPiper93 1 point2 points ago

I love Sunny in Philadelphia, but why is this a gif being made into a political statement against the presidential candidate, not the PRESIDENT. If you said Obama's 49%, it'd make sense because he's the president with control of the country, not Romney. But it doesn't matter, let the downvotes come my way on this comment either way.

[–]theblackestbrotha 0 points1 point ago

Yes, bc sarcasm is marketable job skill.

[–]bertonia 1 point2 points ago

Hardly a good idea to be comparing those 47% to Charlie, a paint-huffing man-child who believes that burnt garbage becomes stars.

[–]IleaveComments -1 points0 points ago

there it is. this is the worst possible image to rally behind. this character is the exact strawman repubs. think all jobless are.

[–]JaxRiens 4 points5 points ago

except there are jobs to be taken..... the problem is we have a ton of over educated graduates with degrees nowhere near the actual market job demand therefore they are taking the jobs that would normally exists for people without degrees. You don't need a masters to work at startbucks for instance.

[–]invaderkristin 2 points3 points ago

The way I see it, a job is a job and if I can't find one in ny chosen field I'll take whatever is available while I continue looking. It's tough out there, and more people need to learn not to be job snobs.

[–]Certus 10 points11 points ago

The reason people are job snobs is because they were told to go to college and get a degree so they wouldn't have to flip burgers.

[–]invaderkristin 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately they might have to deal with it. I had a friend who had no degree whatsoever, got fired and refused to apply at restaurants because she was, "too good for that." Your eviction notice begs to differ.

[–]Certus 0 points1 point ago

I'm not disagreeing that the attitude could be better. I'm just saying that those same people criticizing their attitude were the ones telling them to get good grades or else. Now the reality is they got good grades, loads of debt and they still have to work at those jobs.

There's not "might" in this. They will have to deal with it one way or the other. As we all do in the end.

[–]invaderkristin 3 points4 points ago

Ah, I see what you're saying. These are the same people who also later asked why college students put themselves in so much debt without realizing that this is a different time when school is much more expensive and jobs are much less abundant.

The one's that I get pissed at are the ones who refuse jobs when they don't have one.

[–]MaxIsAlwaysRight 1 point2 points ago

New York grad student here.

The biggest problem I face is that when employers see I'm in studying for my master's, they (rightly) assume I'll leave in a year or two when I get my degree and a job in my field.

Part-time minimum-wage burger flipping doesn't pay the bills, and better-paying ($10-12/hr) employers want someone willing to make a longer commitment.

It's a shitty middleground, and quite honestly it's getting frustrating.

[–]invaderkristin 1 point2 points ago

I paid my bills for 3 years as a burger flipping manager. Gotta get into management to make it count.

And it is shitty that employers to that to people.

[–]Cory_mathews 0 points1 point ago

why not do a paid internship? theres a ton in nyc

[–]MaxIsAlwaysRight 0 points1 point ago

Maybe if you're in training for Wall Street. Not so much in other fields. Paid internships are a holy grail for a lot of us.

[–]Todomanna 0 points1 point ago

There is still a process to go through, management drones to impress, drug screenings to take... it's not a simple process.

[–]DrGnz0 -1 points0 points ago

Management drones are will take a college grad over a highschool grad any day. And if you're dumb enough to look for a job knowing you won't pass a drug test you don't deserve a job.

[–]Todomanna 0 points1 point ago

Provided you're not overqualified.

[–]redbeardo -1 points0 points ago

Newsflash... starbucks is the only company hiring. Because all of the jobs gained since the recession are service industry jobs (vastly low-waged). And all of the high-wage jobs we DO have are being filled by people who were laid off in the recession, taking huge pay cuts and generally being over-experienced.

[–]Cory_mathews 1 point2 points ago

Generalize much? Company i work at has increased its work force from 150ish to 210ish in the past 12 months. i would say 50% of the new hires are recent grads and they will be making above median income straight out of college.

[–]JaxRiens 0 points1 point ago

Same for mine, but then again we are all computer scientist and computer engineers, to put things in perspective in my graduating class there were 4000, 3300 of those were lib arts grads. 20 were computer science.

[–]BurntTheToast 0 points1 point ago
