Bismuth is the epitome of the fact that our reality is math

[–]Sir_ImPLiving life in peace 33 points34 points ago

A snowflake is good enough and way more common.

[–]recneps100 61 points62 points ago

Not if you live in Florida.

[–]Konix 115 points116 points ago

Floridian here. I can confirm this, down here it's all serious bismuth.

[–]panamaspace 10 points11 points ago

I thought it was bismuth for show, like on California's showbismuth.

[–]lifeis 1 point2 points ago

I'm from Hialeah, and who you calling a bismuth? Your mom is a bismuth.

[–]Andokool12Space is deep 6 points7 points ago

Oh yeah I always forget about those things

[–]bronyraurJenkem connoiseur 3 points4 points ago

This is utterly false. Math merely describes our reality; reality is not math.

[–]Andokool12Space is deep 1 point2 points ago

In this case I'm going to have to say what you've said is no different. The way you described it is still what I mean. SARRY!

[–]bronyraurJenkem connoiseur 0 points1 point ago

You should read more about mathematicians, namely Turing and Godel. True /r/woahdude stuff right there.

If you want specifics, check out Newman & Nagel's Godel's Proof. Good intro. Talks about the limitations of mathematical systems.

[–]wheresmyhouseWoah or whoa? 1 point2 points ago

Maybe he means 'math' in the Adventure Time sense.

[–]TheGhostofWoodyAllen 0 points1 point ago

If only we could predict exactly how an individual bismuth crystal will grow!

[–]MaximusQuackhandle 1 point2 points ago

Much like The Golden Ratio.

[–]bronyraurJenkem connoiseur 0 points1 point ago

you must read a lot of Dan Brown

[–]MaximusQuackhandle 0 points1 point ago

Ha, I have read that book, although he called it the divine proportion?

[–]MaximusQuackhandle 0 points1 point ago

There Isn't a lot of Dan Brown to read...

Stupid question: is this the stuff in Pepto-Bismal?

Had to Google why my poop was black and apparently this was a contributing factor.

[–]t_j_k 7 points8 points ago

Sort of. It's actually bismuth subsalicylate in PB. I don't really know much more, not exactly a chemist. Sorry d:

[–]iamichi 9 points10 points ago

What's quite cool is that if you completely burn Pepto-Bismal with a blow torch you get shiny Bismuth slag.

[–]DasKaz 2 points3 points ago

This has been NoContext'ed.

[–]stphni 1 point2 points ago

Essentially, yes. It's also why diapers have bismuth fibers. Bismuth can be harmful to several enterobacteriaceae.

[–]EphelantGurlSpace is deep 12 points13 points ago

Wait. Seriously? This is some natural made thing? Like it comes out of the ground like that?!? Is there a geologist or someone out there who can ELI5 this for me because I must know more.

[–]BurdybotWoah or whoa? 11 points12 points ago

This example was synthesized in a laboratory. I have some myself. Natural bismuth does not look like this, but don't quote me on that because I am not a scientist.

[–]Asliceofpizza 2 points3 points ago

You're correct. Never would you find natural bismuth like this. It's really only produced as a result of iron smelting.

[–]de_prodigy 0 points1 point ago

Bismuth is a useful alternative to lead while waterfowl hunting. Costly too.

[–]mattrva 1 point2 points ago

You're correct. A lot of which is lab grown in the UK. I actually sell the stuff at my work. Cool shit.

[–]space_coconut 2 points3 points ago

I keep mine under my monitor. Southern hemisphere here.

[–]SarahC 0 points1 point ago

Ah, understandable.

[–]UnicycloneHappy trees 6 points7 points ago

You wouldn't find this stuff in nature very often, the same way you don't usually find pure nuggets of iron on the ground. Also, the pure metal is a metallic gray.

To get it like this, they melt the bismuth out, and allow the molten bismuth to crystallize as it cools (this takes a very long time). The trippy rainbow sheen is caused by small impurities in the air (like oxygen) tarnishing the surface. You can even make bismuth crystals yourself, given an oven, a container, and pure bismuth to melt. (I have never done this myself, unfortunately, but I know that other people have.)

[–]HeyyyNow 5 points6 points ago

Props to Ian on BB for giving Bismuth a new life again!

[–]Call_of_DOODYCosmic 5 points6 points ago

This is Ian from Big Brothers favorite element!

[–]ExK4 1 point2 points ago

Fuck that bandwagon shit man Iridium is fuckin tight.

[–]WHODAFUQ 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone ever win big brother by liking Iridium? NO

[–]michaelmofichael 20 points21 points ago

I want a pipe made of this. That would make me the coolest ent on the block.

[–]mattversoRasta man 13 points14 points ago

Unfortunately, its melting point is low enough that making a pipe out of it would be impractical. Making a vaporiser, however...

[–]Residue42 points 0 hours ago[M] 7 points8 points ago

Well, vaporizer still reaches over 340F (my fav degree), most likely we could make a mouthpiece with it. Where can we find some "bismuth"? How can we shape it?

[–]mattversoRasta man 4 points5 points ago

Hmmm... My research has told me that Bismuth melts at 271.4C (that's 519.8F) so maybe we could fashion the whole vaporiser from it after all!

[–]ridik_ulass 3 points4 points ago

I'd be woried that it could be somehow toxic, why not trap it in glass or something>?

[–]mattversoRasta man 5 points6 points ago

Bismuth isn't very toxic. Wrapping it in glass would probably be a good idea though.

"Scientific literature concurs that bismuth and most of its compounds are less toxic compared to other heavy metals (lead, antimony, etc.) and that it is not bioaccumulative. They have low solubilities in the blood, are easily removed with urine, and showed no carcinogenic, mutagenic or teratogenic effects in long-term tests on animals (up to 2 years). Its biological half-life for whole-body retention is 5 days but it can remain in the kidney for years in patients treated with bismuth compounds."

[–]ItzDaWorm 4 points5 points ago

In other words why the fuck hasn't someone made a pipe from this stuff yet?

[–]dfaktz 0 points1 point ago

Money.

[–]Ianbuckjames 0 points1 point ago

There's also the fact that using a bismuth bong would probably give you heavy metal poisoning.

[–]baltakatei 2 points3 points ago

Not any more than pepto-bismol would. It's main active ingredient is bismuth.

[–]Fortune_-_Teller 0 points1 point ago

It could have a double purpose.

[–]UnicycloneHappy trees 1 point2 points ago

That's... not great reasoning. The "bismuth" in Pepto-Bismol is a compound called bismuth subsalicylate. Sodium chloride (salt) is fine for you, but sodium by itself will fuck you up.

Fortunately, bismuth isn't too bad for you. It's not good for you, but it's not toxic like lead is.

[–]Asliceofpizza 2 points3 points ago

I bought 2 pounds of it a few months back. You wouldn't believe how dense the stuff is.

[–]Residue42 points 0 hours ago[M] 2 points3 points ago

Who the hell sells bismuth?

[–]Asliceofpizza 2 points3 points ago

Amazon

I bought it in preparation for an experiment that I was going to run on making some very large lab-grown samples of my own.

[–]TheRealEggNogAdam 0 points1 point ago

How much was two pounds?

[–]GVP 1 point2 points ago

I bought mine from a local gem shop. $6 for a piece the size of my thumb.

[–]SemajSemajSemaj 5 points6 points ago

Even just a slide for a bong would be nice!

[–]oncefoughtabear 6 points7 points ago

If you ever get a chance, go to the natural history museum in New York. They have a whole room of these massive rocks, and they all have these crazy distinct shapes, its really cool. I was with my family, but if you went with ol' Mary Jane, that place would be the tits.

[–]Evilllamas 4 points5 points ago

I have some of this, it feels very strange, aswell as looking odd...

[–]iwouldntifiwereyou 4 points5 points ago

FUCK YEA BISMUTH!

[–]gioraffe32 2 points3 points ago

Cool as hell. I think this form is called a hopper crystal. I bought a little one several years ago from those novelty nature shops for a few bucks.

My Grandma always had an amazing rock collection and this was the one that has always tripped me out since I was 5. I'm glad I know what its called now.

[–]bucksta 0 points1 point ago

Looking to buy some right now, regardless of the fact I'm broke. Do you think it's sheer beauty will be a worthy substitute for food, possibly filling me with magical powers meaning I don't need food? Here's hoping.

[–]gabezermeno 0 points1 point ago

Its not a rock Marie, its a mineral.

[–]llcbdavis 1 point2 points ago

insanely beautiful. need a chunk for my collection

[–]greatdanger 1 point2 points ago

Mmmm.. Diamagnetic.

[–]amilmore 1 point2 points ago

Bismuth as usual.

[–]SoiledSatchel 0 points1 point ago

This metal is in pepto-bismol and the reason your poo turns purple / black

[–]AduroNox 0 points1 point ago

it grew from the seed of bismuth.

[–]relfy0318 1 point2 points ago

Another fun fact: They use bismuth instead of lead in some shotgun shells meant for hunting waterfowl so the led pellets don't contaminate the water.

[–]tands 0 points1 point ago

They are also replacing the lead in our faucets with bismuth. Science!

[–]mushbo 0 points1 point ago

Or the meat.

[–]saidthewhale64 0 points1 point ago

I've heard that if you take a blowtorch to pepto-bismol that it turns into chunks of metal. is that true? and if so, is this the result?

[–]Daddy_Digital 0 points1 point ago

YOU try it. If it blows up, thats your arm. Not ours lol

[–]saidthewhale64 0 points1 point ago

ill keep you posted

[–]saidthewhale64 0 points1 point ago

apparently its not a blowtorch, but you can get the metal from it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp1fYtYEfoQ

[–]kindofawardance -1 points0 points ago

yeaaahhh nigga that bismuth tip! i used to have a rock dat shit in the wayback.

[–]ProfessorMcHugeBalls 0 points1 point ago

Is this stuff safe to handle in this form?

[–]InTheHamIAm 0 points1 point ago

The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol.

[–]Daddy_Digital 0 points1 point ago

From Wikipedia: Bismuth compounds account for about half the production of bismuth. They are used in cosmetics, pigments, and a few pharmaceuticals, notably Pepto-Bismol.

Pepto BISMOL. Makes sense now. Mind blow [8]

[–]JustinHopewell 0 points1 point ago

[–]MemesXDCawadoody 0 points1 point ago

Someone should carve this into a piece. And without even cutting it into a usual piece shape, just hollowing it out and making a bowl, carb etc

[–]Sofandi 1 point2 points ago

Bismuth-209 has a half-life of 19 exayears, which is over a billion times the current age of the universe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismuth-209

That's my favorite element.

[–]arcillaroja 0 points1 point ago

I've got one of these that sits on my bookshelf. It's pretty

[–]BenCelotil 1 point2 points ago

Can... can I lick it?

[–]CThreeFourtySix 0 points1 point ago

Definitely my favourite formation. I went to the "Gemboree" in Bancroft, Ontario a couple years ago and saw a really big chunk of this. I wanted to buy a piece, maybe next time I go to something like that.

[–]snuffmeister 0 points1 point ago

out of fucking nowhere

[–]Boneslatch 0 points1 point ago

anyone else think it was a nug from the thumbnail

[–]grundo1561 0 points1 point ago

I have this stuff, I used to be obsessed with rocks and minerals.

[–]steve_yo 0 points1 point ago

I once drank swiss miss from a bismuth on an isthmus during a christmas.

[–]five_hammers_hamming 0 points1 point ago

It would be really cool to have a mug or something made of bismuth crystals with that fresh layer of oxide that stayed that way... I'm thinking of just coating them with glass--like chucking the chunks into the body of a glass mold and then pouring in the flowing glass.

[–]TacoSalad33 1 point2 points ago

I am pretty sure that is what rainbow road is made of.

[–]bolthead88 0 points1 point ago

I hate all pentavalent poor metals. Fuck Bi.

[–]allenizabeth 0 points1 point ago

/b/ is for bismuth

[–]delirium98 0 points1 point ago

I wanted to buy one of these and make something out of it, but I didn't have enough cash at the time

[–]feared_rear_admiral 0 points1 point ago

I've been trying to make this for a while, can't get the right setup together :(

If anyone has experience in making bismuth crystals well please link me some good guides.

[–]ExK4 0 points1 point ago

Cubes are oft-considered the epitome of human design, yet, in this picture before us we see cubes, formed only by nature.

[–]clgonsal 0 points1 point ago

Salt is an even more common example of right angles in nature.

[–]badmonkey0001 0 points1 point ago

I had an old friend who was really into "earthiness". As a twist on an Ani DiFranco rant, she used to say "Nothing in nature has right angles!". One day, I got her a chunk of bismuth. She never claimed that again.

Love ya, Bismuth. You won me several arguments with people that hold such mindsets since.

[–]SavageNutDump 0 points1 point ago

Don't we drink this stuff for stomach aches?

[–]ChootchMcGooch 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the navigator.

[–]pineapplemonkey 0 points1 point ago

[–]Apathetic_Superhero 0 points1 point ago

Other than Pepto Bismol, what is Bismuth used for or used in?

[–]five_hammers_hamming 0 points1 point ago

Birdshot, among other things.

[–]edamamefiend 0 points1 point ago

You can get Bismuth by blowtorching Pepto Bismol...!
