Last time I saw him he was mowing my neighbor's lawn, or are you looking for someone other than Jesus Rodriguez?

Waldo is still better at hiding.

[–]rossryan 1 point2 points ago

Nonsense. He's probably hiding from his self-reported followers, if only because even he thinks they're kind of crazy.

"Jesus says he wants us to go to war with Iran" "No, no I don't; I just want you all to get along" "Satan! Get behind me! Listen not to devil, he's trying to trick you!" "No, seriously...damnit, it's just like the Romans / Jews all over again! Love your neighbor!" "See, I told you it wasn't Jesus! Our Jesus would want us to spread his religion by any means, even lies and murder!" "No, seriously, what Paul did was...look, just treat everyone the way you would treat your fami-better than you treat your family. A lot better. Work on this first, and when you've managed to do it, give me a call. We'll talk then." "Yes, but how will they be saved if we don't spread your word! Plus, I kind of hate my family...my son doesn't even call home anymore." "See, I'm God. The alpha and the omega. I can save whoever I damn well like, whether or not they've heard about me. I'm just that awesome. I have a temperament that is comparable to the Buddha's, and I am victorious in every one of my battles. I have no enemies, because when they see me coming, they quickly change their minds about whose side their on. Since I am somewhat responsible for your creation, and the fact that you are all hopelessly inbred, I intend to stick around until you are where I want you to be, who I want you to be. And right now, I am teaching you the facts of life -> work on your family life, work on your friends, then work on your enemies. I am not expecting you to get it all at once, it takes time, I understand, but I much prefer you work on this first. Cool / fun stuff later, promise."

I really wish more people understood that this is what religion is all about. Religion wants to teach people to live peacefully and amicably, and uses a divine medium to provide an authority figure. Religion isn't about Jesus or Buddha or Allah or anything. It's about peace and coexistence.

Hmm. I see it more that it uses a divine medium to communicate what cannot be spoken. This is a greater achievement that the use of authority, which is common even among the animals.

Human language, as the film MIB has pointed out, is so simple, so context and emotion sensitive, so inefficient, and so poor in general, that communication can be quite trying at times. There are important times when one can never find the right words, or when they come out with the wrong inflection. And yet it works better, I imagine, than other things in certain cases; what they are, I do not know.

Truly insightful. I guess I see the world as a set of mental constructs. We as individuals need our beliefs to coalesce and make sense.

God, I believe, provides us with a figure to look up to, someone to be both grateful for and someone to fear when we don't live our lives in a way we ourselves know is good.

It's that last bit that's important: that we ourselves decide what is good and what is bad. So this authoritative figure must rely on us. But if it's different for each individual, doesn't that mean that there must be an infinite number of gods, much as there will be an infinite number of people in existence? So what's stopping me from saying that each person carries their own god in their mind, as a mental construct?

Religion provides almost a statistical medium. I believe religions essentially follow the average path of what people think. At the time of conception(of christianity, for this example), most people were extremely against homosexuals, etc. We have the ten commandments, which are principles that are so widely accepted as being unequivocally right and good, that they are unchanging. The rest of human values is given in accounts. So each person who contributed to the writing of holy scripts has simply tied in his own views of the world into the overarching themes and storylines.

I hope that made at least a little sense. I thank you, though, for giving me his opportunity to think :)

You just went all Jehovah's witness on my ass.

[–]rossryan 2 points3 points ago

Really, is that why they say?

[–]EnigmaticBanana 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry, can you turn that collection of words into something less nonsensical? I don't understand what you are saying.

I totally missed him at first glance, almost had to ask what the joke was.

[–]LeinadSpoon 1 point2 points ago

I feel like I just saw this exact same joke with a different picture yesterday.
