That looks ridiculous but is probably the result of trying to overlay satellite imagery with terrain elevation data and then scaling the result to provide the angled view. I tried to get a similar result out of Google Maps on Android but the Terrain and Satellite layers are exclusive.

In other words, Google's already figured out this doesn't work well. Apple's still got some things to learn about mapping.

I wish people understood that writing software isn't easy to do, and that it's remarkably easy to forget things that many would consider obvious.

You, emarkd, understand the problem, and good on you for doing that.

[–]Raniz 8 points9 points ago

While writing software can be hard, writing mapping software can be a PITA, especially if you care about being somewhat correct.

source: I write mapping software for the airline industry.

[–]Slukaj 1 point2 points ago

Well there's a fair difference between what you do versus what an Apple iOS software dev does.

An Apple dev, for starts, doesn't necessarily think of this stuff. The came up with an algorithm and implementation to overlay images on topographical terrain, nor would I expect them to. These guys have to be responsible for hundreds of various apps and methods the iOS platform uses other than the map.

You on the other hand need to make damn sure that your mapping software is as accurate as possible. What may have been a few weeks of development for the iOS guys is a few years for what you do, simply because you're software is arguably more important.

When it comes down to it, do you think this issue is that big a deal to Apple? I'd call it insignificant given the application it's used for.

[–]Gorkymalorki 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but this combined with all the other problems that Maps is having, makes you wonder how much time they really put into making this.

[–]goblinseverywhere 7 points8 points ago

I don't think people are saying its an easy solution. I think people are mocking the many bugs in it because they took a well-tested and working system (google maps) and replaced it with a horrific comparison.

While they're both, i'm sure, very difficult and huge projects to program its not a "Apple should of got it right!" thing going on, its more of a "Why the hell did they remove google maps for THIS"

[–]brownox 2 points3 points ago

Exactly, its also a little schadenfreude because of apples patent shutdown of Samsung/Google devices.

[–]goblinseverywhere 0 points1 point ago

Well, that depends on your opinion of the legal process of Patent infringements.

Not everyone thinks apple is the devil because they're doing what everyone is doing to everyone.

Nokia did it TO apple not long ago and the judgement was $700,000 or something around there. Nobody said anything then...

These lawsuits are going on constantly for decades now. People only cared when apple did it to samsung.

So in light of that, its not really shadenfreude. Its just a potentially poor decision with some pros to it. Time will tell.

I was more addressing a general complaint against developers (I work IT while studying CS at Purdue University). People generally assume that programming is easy, and that bugs like this should be fixed because they're obvious.

It reminds me of the Borderlands 2 infinite money glitch that surfaced last night, where you can trade for negative amounts of money that doesn't check to see if the amount even exists first. You would think this stuff is obvious, but there are so many various cases to what humans do on a daily basis that it's easy to forget that.

Now, as for why they replaced Google Maps, I agree. I know the reason has more to do with Apple trying to stay independent from the competitors than anything else, but that doesn't make it fun.

Funnily enough, I think it was Jobs that was keeping Google Maps, because he recognized that the software was already as intuitive as you could get.

[–]goblinseverywhere 0 points1 point ago

I also work in IT for a Law Firm in the UK, mostly network admin but has a nice side of software development. I completely understand the difficulties of looking at EVERY potential situation and stopping abuse like the Borderlands bug.

We agree on the change being a negative move however.

Always nice to have a discussion with someone when you see eye to eye. Then again if everyone who discussed things already had the same opinions then nothing would change in the world ironically.

[–]Deluxe754 4 points5 points ago

Also the "3D" thing is lit up so that might be fucking with it.

[–]tojal 0 points1 point ago

They also seemed to not know how to count leap years on an alarm clock (or was it daylight savings?)

[–]jelloburn[!] 2 points3 points ago

I viewed this area in Google Earth and it isn't shown as being all bumpy.

[–]SharkUW 0 points1 point ago

The terrain variation of an airport is pretty god damn flat. It's either extremely old elevation data before the airport existed or some insane attempt to hide gaps in elevation data.

[–]dragonhunter21 0 points1 point ago

You'd be surprised. Our A/FDs (airport/facilities directory) lists altitude (above sea level, in feet) of both ends of each runway. The main strip at my home airport has a .2 percent grade- doesn't sound like much, but it's a 30 foot difference. And the secondary strip that we use for touch and gos- it looks like a strip of cooked bacon.

[–]SharkUW 0 points1 point ago

But that's not going back and forth 30. That's end to end with a pretty smooth slope.

[–]dragonhunter21 0 points1 point ago

Primary is. Secondary isn't. I tell you, "It looks like taffy" isn't a fun thought o have on final. By and large, though, they are quite flat. Just... Not exceptionally.

[–]illdoitforyou 31 points32 points ago

That's what happens when Canada thaws for the summer... It wrinkles...

[–]TacticalSniper 11 points12 points ago

I bet it's sorry, though.

[–]lesuje 91 points92 points ago

Go home, airport, you're drunk!

[–]kuiper3 3 points4 points ago

I have a feeling this picture is going to get reposted with your title.

[–]atwoodb95 10 points11 points ago

That would be a bumpy takeoff!

[–]Reaper91394 9 points10 points ago

"Attention passengers, we will be experiencing some turbulence during take off";

Please keep your hands and feet inside the plane until the ride comes to a complete stop.

[–]GlottostopFTW 7 points8 points ago

close enough

[–]weedmonkey 5 points6 points ago

that's just one wonderful example why trigonometry is important

[–]VonAether 5 points6 points ago

"Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to experience some turbulence... and then we'll lift off."

YYZ - PEARSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ONTARIO CANADA

[–]td27 9 points10 points ago

Take that Google! We don't need your stinkin' maps anymore

[–]shiny_jacob 3 points4 points ago

That's why Rush wrote a song about it!

[–]Some_Young_Atheist 0 points1 point ago

Which song?

[–]SirDigbyChknCaesar 4 points5 points ago

Some Langoliers will straighten that out in a jiffy.

[–]rushingfox 3 points4 points ago

It looks fine after 20 beers

[–]devilsadvocated 2 points3 points ago

That looks like the coolest driving course ever.

[–]eiPott 2 points3 points ago

Seems legit.

[–]skw1dward 0 points1 point ago

can't blame apple, not like it's apple's technology.

[–]Some_Young_Atheist -1 points0 points ago

Shh! The hive-mind might hear you!

[–]wretcheddawn 0 points1 point ago

Hipsterport - being flat is too mainstream.

[–]Lotem_KW 0 points1 point ago

Fuggin' Pearson

[–]RoiMan -1 points0 points ago

A bit sketchy, I'd say.

[–]derrick88rose -1 points0 points ago

LOLLLLLLLL

[–]JFoggers 0 points1 point ago

"It's gonna be a bumpy ride!"

[–]efthemothership 1 point2 points ago

This is how I feel the airport runways actually are after looking out the window in an airplane after landing or getting ready to take off. I gave up on trying to figure out how in the fuck the pilots know where to go.

[–]omnilynx 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that was a terrible place to build an airport.

[–]Palgi 0 points1 point ago

Seems legit.

[–]ARCHA1C 0 points1 point ago

"Dr. Suess was a big inspiration for the Maps App team" - Scott Forstall

[–]mingy -1 points0 points ago

I am sure Apple will say you are looking at it wrong.

[–]cocktastic_voyage 0 points1 point ago

Toronto's airport is ridiculous.

[–]jay_the_vast 1 point2 points ago

Pilot here. That's accurate.

[–]andnowforme0 0 points1 point ago

No wonder the landing was so bumpy...

[–]IWasGregInTokyo 0 points1 point ago

Funny thing is the area around YYZ is pretty freaking flat except for the ravines off the end of the runways into which the occasional Air France jet will slide.

[–]Neoupa2002 1 point2 points ago

Should I use short field or soft field technique...

[–]skilas 0 points1 point ago

I drive the 427 everyday. This explains why traffic is always so bad.

[–]Solari23 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, that IS Pearson International. That map wouldn't surprise anyone who's had to go through there.

[–]sfcl33t 1 point2 points ago

Wonder if this is done on purpose to obfuscate airport runways

[–]JackpineSavage 9 points10 points ago

You obfuscate on your own time pervert.

[–]PachoWumbo 0 points1 point ago

OMG, there should totally be a subreddit for Apple's map pics now.
