At the very least I feel like an adult male you should really aim to cover the following bases. Trying to get all-purpose shoes usually results in something ugly or out of place

Fancy Black leather shoe for suit-wearing (Depending on what suits you have you may also need a brown pair) Recommendation: You can get these slightly used for <$100 on ebay
Casual non-sneaker shoe or boot for khakis/business casual (Best to have brown as black does not go with khaki/jeans quite as well) Recommendation: These go on sale sometimes for <$100
Casual low-top sneakers (Vans, Nikes, Converse, go crazy!)
Athletic sneakers (Even if you rarely do athletic things, its always good to have an all-purpose athletic sneaker available)
Flip flops/sandals (Even if you aren't a beach goer these are ideal for times of super-laziness)

I don't buy a lot of fun/dress up shoes, but I have a lot of shoes for sports and outdoors adventures. Hiking boots, chacos, cleats, running shoes, and climbing shoes. That doesn't include any of my everyday shoes: flip flops, a pair of vans, boots for when it gets cold, one pair of nice flats, slippers, one pair of nice/classic heels for interviews, and one pair of fun heels. And I suppose you could wear running shoes or chacos for everyday shoes, but I don't like to look scruffy. If you start doing a lot of outdoor activities you find yourself with a lot of shoes just out of necessity...

2 is low. I am on the other end. If you include shoes for sports. I have 2 pairs of brown, 2 pairs of black, 4 pairs of running shoes (different sneakers for different runs, ie long runs, intermediate, shorter runs, barefoot shoes etc), baseball cleats, basketball shoes, golf shoes, 2 pairs of boots (ones for cold weather and ones for wearing with jeans etc), cordovan shoes, white bucks, berks. Maybe over 20 pairs. I need to do a cull though. I think asside from sporting shoes 10 is about the right number. You dont want to wear the same dress shoes every day as you want to give them some rest between wearing, that is assuming you buy good quality shoes $200. That may seem like a lot, but I have had the same pair of shoes for over 12 years. When you buy the best quality (not some fancy name, im looking at you aldo) you only cry once.

Woman here. See, although I work in retail, all that walking around the entire store wears shoes out reeeaaaally fast. So, when there's the rare shoe sales I tend to stock up. I have about three pairs of work tennis shoes that are in different states of new-ness, three pairs of sandals (one pair that fully fasten around my feet for roller coaster trips, my boyfriend's super-comfy sandals, and a pair of flip-flops for quick trips to the store), one pair of winter boots, one pair of dress shoes, and a pair of everyday shoes. It's not unreasonable. Now my aunt? Holy motherfucking shit. I think she had over fifty pairs at one point in time.

Lessee I got one pair of house shoes, one pair sandals, wellies, steeltoe boots, hiking shoes, running shoes, heels for weddings, 2 pairs of nursing/travel shoes (look nice and are easy to clean and you can stand 12 hours in them) and 2 pairs of office shoes. I'm going to guess that you haven't had varied work/leisure activities in the last 10 years.

My feet haven't changed size and I've done field research on two different continents, event production, construction, farmwork, office work and veterinary nursing plus my hobbies. You can get away with two pairs if you're not doing work that soaks shoes in mud and shit or endangers your toes and then have to dress in nice clothing. Sure I could get rid of some of these but then I'd probably end up ruining a good set of shoes.
