I would imagine that they're going to have updates routinely on the map. I just can't process why people think that this is the final release and there will be no more changes.

I had a Droid X back when they first came out and that Google Map app was barebones too at first. Updates again made it better, why can't people understand that?

[–]mikespry 13 points14 points ago

oh people understand that. but keep in mind unlike android maps which can be updated individually, iPhone maps is part of the core firmware image. this likely means rather infrequent app updates. the map data on the other hand is server side so it'll keep improving (if you think maps stinks now you should have tried early betas) but there won't be any miracles. apple is chasing google who had a 5 year head start. and the target isn't stationary as google will keep improving. good luck to apple i guess.

While I agree Apple weren't ready to move away from Google Maps, you don't honestly think that your phone stores all the map tiles do you?! The app retrieves them from the internet! All Apple need to do to add those new landmarks is update the tiles on their servers. They don't need to update the app in any way. If Apple wanted to add new features to the app, then they'd have to do that, but for just new landmarks they don't

It's just the fact that people automatically assumed that they'd be as good if not better than Google right off the bat. This is their iteration of maps, of course it's going to start out this way.

[–]level1gamer 19 points20 points ago

People expected it to be as good or better than Google because they replaced Google with it. People get upset when features are taken away. That shouldn't be a surprise.

[–]a_fonzerelli 13 points14 points ago

The point isn't that it will improve over time, it's that they're forcing their customers to take a massive step backwards with one of the most useful apps on their phones. It's outrageous to foist a clearly inferior product on users while eliminating a better functioning one.

[–]morkle13 0 points1 point ago

I've had the iPhone for a year+ now, since leaving Android I've always felt that the Apple Dev team were playing catch up in most instances with Android. This is nothing new to me really.

The contract ended, apple was forced to change

[–]a_fonzerelli 0 points1 point ago

Apple has massive amounts of cash on hand; if they wanted to they could have easily paid to renew the contract. They simply don't want to give money to Google, and now their customers are suffering for it.

[–]Kinseyincanada 0 points1 point ago

Or google didn't want to renew the contract with apple

[–]jmac 31 points32 points ago

We understand. But they should not have replaced Google's maps if their own offering was substantially lacking in features. Work that shit out before you release it.

[–]morkle13 3 points4 points ago

The thing with it though is that Google is constantly updating theirs too. Sooner or later this was going to have to be done, I'm sure Apple will update it more.

[–]Emphursis 0 points1 point ago

I hope so, the satellite imagery for my area is worse than it was on Google Earth when that was first released.

[–]jbkrule 0 points1 point ago

Apple's contract with Google expired. Neither company wanted to have a deal with the other for smart phones since they are competing and so the deal for google maps ended. Luckily they worked out an alternative before it expired at all.

[–]manderso 1 point2 points ago

Google did not want this. They're gonna try to get back in with apple by way of a maps app, but we'll have to wait and see if apple will have them.

[–]sirberus 1 point2 points ago

From what I've read, Google only allows turn-by-turn on Android phones... which means, at some point, Apple would have had to do this in order to add in such a now-basic feature. Like google, their maps are off to a rough start and with the aid of users actually using it, they can improve.

It's not ideal, but from what I can see it is what had to be done in order to not screw themselves over in the long run.

[–]jbkrule 0 points1 point ago

I expect their new app to be competition though and to encourage people to use google services over Apple. I don't think that adding their own app to the app store automatically says that they didn't want the contract to expire. The contract limited their own control of the app, now they can update it how they want to.

[–]CaptainColeslaw 1 point2 points ago

They shouldn't have released it if it didn't hold a certain standard.

[–]cbfw86 4 points5 points ago

I am so glad I haven't updated yet. iOS6 looks like a downgrade from where I'm sitting.

[–]logged_n_2_say 2 points3 points ago

I think I'm going to upgrade to ios6 too, all for the sweet anti map karma.

People if you need and use google maps on a daily basis, don't upgrade until google creates a downloadable map app. They are probably waiting to get maximum exposure and backlash of ios6 maps.

[–]FUDGESICLES 4 points5 points ago

Or use the webapp

[–]Dajbman22 0 points1 point ago

For now its what I am doing, but the traffic still isn't as detailed on the web app.

[–]grahampaull 2 points3 points ago

I would imagine Google will release its own app for maps just like they done with the YouTube app.

[–]nixfu -5 points-4 points ago

The OLD app was googles, and they let it die because they didn't want it to compete with android. That is why apple had to start from scratch.

[–]preludeoflight 1 point2 points ago

I'm fairly certain it just made use of google's map data and mapping engine. Apple controlled the app, and never updated it.

[–]nekothecat 2 points3 points ago

Nope! No thats it they're all done.

[–]yodamuppet 2 points3 points ago

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that what you see is what you get. Has anyone else looked at the "acknowledgments" in the new version of Maps? Ridiculously long. So many sources of data, it suggests a finished product. The sheer volume of contracts that had to be drawn up for these agreements is mind-boggling. Dammit, I wish Apple had just decided that it was in their best interests to work a deal with Google in order to keep providing a superior product.

[–]klyonrad 0 points1 point ago

Well it would be a bit better if they'd make even more use of OpenStreetMap

This promotion of OpenStreetMap is the only thing about this Maps change :)

[–]zhunterzz 1 point2 points ago

My university is the same way.

[–]omgsus 0 points1 point ago

anyone can.... open street maps...

[–]highside 0 points1 point ago

iPhone 6

[–]mikespry 0 points1 point ago

apple sure stuck it to google. look at them now. never mind the collective weeping sound of millions of ios6 maps.app users.

and then drive them through Detroit?

[–]rakster -3 points-2 points ago

Google spent close to ten years filling in maps data. It's gonna take Apple a while to get up to speed with the details. Give them a chance.

[–]AFCFORME 1 point2 points ago

They shouldnt have released it until it was close to ready to compete then. This is pretty damn disappointing from a phone/company that wants to claim to be the best.

[–]rakster 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, but I don't think they claimed to have the best maps. Hopefully google maps comes out for iPhone soon
