They made the first camera, tested it, made a second camera then took a picture of the first? Only logical explanation I can think of

[–]twoclose 26 points27 points ago

Can't be this. The caption above the image states that it is a picture of the "making of" the world's first camera.

[–]Rakqoi 20 points21 points ago

They must have disassembled the first, began to reassemble it, and took a picture with the second.

[–]RandomQuickAnswer 27 points28 points ago

Using three gigantic mirrors, they were able to use this camera to take a picture of itself from the side.

[–]HelpfulDiagram 8 points9 points ago

[–]RandomQuickAnswer 2 points3 points ago

Perfect! But for some reason, in my head it looked like this.

[–]lynxman89 0 points1 point ago

Are you left handed? Your dominant hand may influence the way you imagine things such as this.

[–]computergroove 0 points1 point ago

I never thought that this gif would be useful in a post in this way. Slow Clap.

[–]Take_Me_To_Elysium 3 points4 points ago

They built the first camera with no documented proof of how it was made, invented a time machine, and went back in time with a camera to take a picture of the first camera being made.

[–]ColouredPants 3 points4 points ago

Why'd they take such a shit camera back?

[–]KizzyKid 2 points3 points ago

So it does! I missed that originally, have an upvote.

[–]doesnotexist1000 1 point2 points ago

Caption was probably not the title of the picture, but the title of the "article" or whatever this picture was at

[–]SuperNashwan 22 points23 points ago

Only logical explanation I can think of

Dare I venture a second hypothesis, that the claim that it's the making of the first ever camera is false?

[–]KizzyKid 1 point2 points ago

of course, I was working under the assumption that it WAS in fact the first camera made and finding a logical explanation for it's picture being taken. The only way to disprove something is to first find all logical explanations and disproving them.

[–]sebaz 0 points1 point ago

Umm dude...it's on the internet. That means it's true.

[–]injekted 0 points1 point ago

Can't be. This is the Internet... there are no lies on the Internet.

[–]virnovus 0 points1 point ago

Yes, you're right. Here are some of the first surviving photographs ever taken:

http://toffsmen.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/examples-of-the-first-and-early-photography/

And obviously none of them are photos of cameras.

FYI, this picture was taken in the early 1900s by a train company that wanted to take the highest-quality picture possible of it's new state-of-the-art train. And they wanted to spare no expense on the photograph. Here's a link:

or this

[–]growlingbear 90 points91 points ago

It wasn't the first device capable of making photographic images.

The first partially successful photograph of a camera image was made in approximately 1816 by Nicéphore Niépce[7][8] using a very small camera of his own making and a piece of paper coated with silver chloride, which darkened where it was exposed to light. No means of removing the remaining unaffected silver chloride was known to Niépce, so the photograph was not permanent, eventually becoming entirely darkened by the overall exposure to light necessary for viewing it. Later, in 1826, he used a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris, France. He made his first permanent camera photograph in 1826 by coating a pewter plate with bitumen and exposing the plate in this camera.[9] The bitumen hardened where light struck. The unhardened areas were then dissolved away. This photograph still survives.

According to the wiki, the Camera Obscura (Pinhole Camera) was used back by the ancient Chinese and ancient Greeks.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 to 322 BCE) understood the optical principle of the pinhole camera.[4] He viewed the crescent shape of a partially eclipsed sun projected on the ground through the holes in a sieve and through the gaps between the leaves of a plane tree. In the 4th century BCE, Aristotle noted that "sunlight travelling through small openings between the leaves of a tree, the holes of a sieve, the openings wickerwork, and even interlaced fingers will create circular patches of light on the ground." Euclid's Optics (ca 300 BCE) presupposed the camera obscura as a demonstration that light travels in straight lines.[5] In the 4th century, Greek scholar Theon of Alexandria observed that "candlelight passing through a pinhole will create an illuminated spot on a screen that is directly in line with the aperture and the center of the candle."

Read it in a bathroom reader. Think he's right.

[–]Your_Using_It_Wrong 1 point2 points ago

Here's a UT Austin webpage about The First Photograph. growlingbear is correct. Niepce took a picture of his courtyard with an 8-hour long exposure. The picture in the title isn't the world's first camera (obviously).

[–]sgt_mustard 0 points1 point ago

Interesting note: You can tell that exposure took so much time by the fact the sun/light is shining and casting shadows on booth sides of the picture.

[–]kayzingzingy 1 point2 points ago

Nope it was 3 big mirrors we already decided

[–]bbqbot 18 points19 points ago

That picture was made using only a palette knife. No camera.

[–]Sladeakakevin -3 points-2 points ago

I get this reference.

I need to reddit less...

[–]scarecrowUSMC 7 points8 points ago

Time Travel seems like a good explanation

[–]EloHer 4 points5 points ago

Pictures were taken before the invention of the modern camera.

[–]Sir_Smashing 14 points15 points ago

What makes you think that's what the first camera looked like? because that's definitely not it.

[–]oopssorrydaddy 1 point2 points ago

Mammoth plate camera. Not the first by a longshot.

[–]batfiend 0 points1 point ago

A series of large mirrors?

Hmm. That seems elaborate.

[–]One_Wheel_Drive 0 points1 point ago

Proof of time travel?

Suddenly the Curiosity photos of itself are far less exciting/interesting

[–]fintorro 1 point2 points ago

One word. Tardis.

[–]yeahmaybe 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know any source information for this image?

It's most likely a staged reenactment, like many early images. (Imagine how long those guys had to stand still for that picture!)

I just wonder if "Making of the World's First Camera" was the actual title for this image or if someone just made that part up as a humor-joke.

[–]Takaigo 0 points1 point ago

They used an array of mirrors to take the picture, hence why they are all looking to the right.

[–]Kunkletown 0 points1 point ago

First model of camera, maybe?

[–]sakkask -1 points0 points ago

[–]-souuul 0 points1 point ago

Maybe the 2nd one ?

They just had to reproduce another camera and take this photo maybe 1 year after they created it...

[–]fartpoopandpee 0 points1 point ago

An old iPhone perhaps.

[–]tombodadin 1 point2 points ago
