Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It was taken from a NASA chase plane. Here's a link: http://huffingtonpost.tumblr.com/post/31875679073/jacobsoboroff-wow-i-was-just-sent-this-photo

and here is a photo of the plane the photo was taken from: http://i.imgur.com/JjKGc.jpg

[–]mbafk 6 points7 points ago

In this case it's more of a leader than a chase plane as they fly ahead to look at the weather. If you want to know more there is a good article here.

[–]DonnyDreamliner 2 points3 points ago

Can't believe nobody's done this yet

Edit: Thought I was on /r/photoshopbattles for a sec. Dammit.

[–]michellengineer 0 points1 point ago

I do believe that's the C9 "Vomit Comet!"

[–]savage_beast 58 points59 points ago

How did they let planes fly that close?

[–]lisan_al_gaib 35 points36 points ago

Pilots.

[–]4Bees 37 points38 points ago

Pre-coordinated formation flight. It's quite safe actually. The 747 is a big, stable platform to lead the flight and there's quite a bit of space between the planes even though it looks uncomfortable for people who haven't flown like this before.

[–]savage_beast 5 points6 points ago

Oooooo ok that's pretty awesome.

[–]ShakesBaer 39 points40 points ago

Is that how baby planes are made?

[–]Dented 44 points45 points ago

Shuttle, get off the plane, you are drunk.

[–]Kurigauth 27 points28 points ago

Shuttle

Stahp

[–]sandtowel 6 points7 points ago

So why do they need the other plane to fly next to it? Just so it can take this picture?

[–]martyring 11 points12 points ago

Yep. And it probably kept an eye out for falling shuttles that the 747 pilots wouldn't be able to see. But mostly the awesome photo-op.

[–]Y2JisRAW 22 points23 points ago

What could they do if the other plane actually looses the shuttle?

Pilot 2 to Pilot 1, you just lost your space shuttle sir.

Well, fuck.

[–]bretstar 5 points6 points ago

Should've been holding it down from the window.

[–]martyring 0 points1 point ago

I like to think they would also tell ATC and/or the proper authorities to watch out for falling space shuttles

[–]mbafk 8 points9 points ago

The other plane is NASA C-9 "pathfinder" that finds safe weather ahead of the shuttle. They are much more picky about where to fly the shuttle than a normal commercial jet.

Here is some more info from NASA.

[–]ShittyFieldTech -1 points0 points ago

because fuck using radar when you have planes

[–]Skipdodoubleg 6 points7 points ago

Lots of credit to the shuttle pilot who landed on that 747!

[–]MakesShitUp4Fun 2 points3 points ago

I think they use arrestor cables like the ones on aircraft carriers.

Subject: Update: Space Shuttle Endeavour Flyover, Sept. 21, 2012

Weather, aircraft status and other factors may significantly change the flight path and flyby locations. The flyover could be delayed or canceled.

On the morning of Sept. 21, 2012, the Space Shuttle Endeavour will salute the people of NASA Ames and Northern California with a low-level flyover of NASA Ames Research Center before being permanently installed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. The approximate time for the flyover is between 9 to 9:30 a.m.

To commemorate this event and celebrate NASA Ames' contributions to the Space Shuttle Program, the Center will hold a public event at the Moffett Field airfield and open areas surrounding building 158, starting at 6 a.m.

Event Schedule
6-7:40 a.m. Main Gates Open
Information Booths
8:15 Airfield Gates Open
8:30 Welcome, Ames Center Director, Dr. S. Pete Worden
8:40 Shuttle Program - Ames Perspective Astronaut Bo Bobko, Ames Return to Flight Project Manager John Allmen, and Astronaut Stephen Robinson
9-9:15 Countdown to Shuttle Flyover
9:15-10 a.m. Information Booths

The public is expected to vacate Moffett Field one hour after the shuttle departs.

I saw this fly by my parents house this morning. It kind of sucked because my dad was the one that wanted to see it, and I just happened to walk outside and see him staring up at the sky. He told me the shuttle was supposed to fly by, so I started helping him look for it. I got lucky and noticed a blur fly between two houses. I stood up on his truck bed to get a better view over the houses and there it was, flying pretty low, headed towards downtown Houston. My dad has bad knees so he couldn't get up to there to see it. He was pretty bummed out :(

[–]dWoell 2 points3 points ago

I really hope this is one of those instances where people on the internet lie for no reason because this is incredibly heart-breaking.

[–]JavaMoose 0 points1 point ago

Lyk Dis if U Cryd Evertim

[–]rvenegas79 2 points3 points ago

Can somebody please wash down the space shuttle?

[–]TL10 0 points1 point ago

You're gonna need alot of bleach for that.

[–]blunt_person 1 point2 points ago

And strip it of its battle scars? That fucker did battle with the heat of re-entry multiple times. Wear it proudly.

[–]random__person 2 points3 points ago

i got to see that pass by my house yesterday before it did a fly by houston.. it was awesome.

[–]VBxGatsby 3 points4 points ago

This is a real picture? Are you serious?

[–]E3K 1 point2 points ago

Why don't you think it's real?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]yip_yip_yip_uh_huh 1 point2 points ago

Maybe...

[–]bambambambambalam 1 point2 points ago

WTF? that's scary close.

[–]timeshifter_ 5 points6 points ago

Clearly you've never seen the Blue Angels at an airshow.

[–]bambambambambalam 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I've seen the Canadian equivalent a few times.

[–]mbaran 5 points6 points ago

sorry

[–]imakeairplanes 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, well, the Blue Angels don't generate wing-tip vertices like 747s do.

[–]martyring 0 points1 point ago

Now I want to see some 747s doing formation flying equivalent to a Blue Angel show....

[–]luigisfuckingpeach 2 points3 points ago

OR Space Shuttle Endeavour carrying the 747?

[–]evilspoons 1 point2 points ago

I know you're just joking but... if it were actually carrying the 747, the shuttle's been upgraded to anti-gravity propulsion, since its engines are covered (actually, removed and replaced with dummies).

[–]desitheredhead 0 points1 point ago

Great shot!

[–]lisan_al_gaib 0 points1 point ago

Casual. NBD.

[–]mcneilm3 1 point2 points ago

Props to Orville & Wilbur Wright. Man have we come a long way.

[–]mknutso 0 points1 point ago

And if you look out the right side you will see AHHHHHHH!!!

[–]RangerGeet 0 points1 point ago

this just buzzed over my office like 10 minutes ago... it's amazing how low it was flying, they said they would be coming over Tucson at about 1500 feet... incredible.

[–]theGstandsforGabriel 0 points1 point ago

This just flew past me about fifteen minutes ago.

[–]JefftheFuckingAwesom 1 point2 points ago

MUH NIGGA OBAMA KILT DAT FLYIN SHIP!!!!

[–]JackTheKing 1 point2 points ago

Always reminds me of this: http://cellar.org/2009/piggyback.jpg

[–]Sniper1154 0 points1 point ago

Giggity

[–]theadguy 0 points1 point ago

Why does everyone say they saw this "this morning" (Sept 20), and yet the press release in the comments says it will happen on the morning of Sept 21?

Are we doing the time warp again?

[–]Dummies102 0 points1 point ago

but who was plane?

[–]sirsurg 0 points1 point ago

If you stay around kids you soon shall see superman

[–]Einstine1984 0 points1 point ago

I think this shuttle should have been castrated while it was still a baby plane

http://i.qkme.me/3r02ve.jpg

[–]dglaw 0 points1 point ago

we have a winner for the best picture of this event

[–]vinvin618 0 points1 point ago

I have the nerdiest boner right now.

[–]Loathe -1 points0 points ago

Why do they have to go through all the trouble of putting the shuttle on top of another plane? Can't the shuttle fly to its destination by itself?

[–]davesidious 0 points1 point ago

That's actually just the orbiter, not the entire space shuttle.

[–]E3K 21 points22 points ago

Thanks Dwight.

[–]davesidious -2 points-1 points ago

I just thought as everyone was getting hard over it they might as well use the terminology correctly :)

[–]PA27Pilot -2 points-1 points ago

If you were going to go through that much trouble to take picture.. You'd think you would have taken a minute to clean the window you're going to take the picture out of.
