Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is actually kind of creepy. I mean, if I was just swimming along and I came upon this staring at me from the depths of the sea...I'd probably make the water a little warmer and browner.

[–]is-serp 182 points183 points ago

As a Maltese diver I can confirm that! The statue is placed next to a wreck that's 42m (~138 feet) deep. When you look down from the surface, you can't see the bottom... so you start going down, and you find this fucking big face looking back at you! Scared the shit out of me the first time!

[–]YOU_ARE_A_FUCK 19 points20 points ago

How far down does this amount of light go? To me it could have been 10m below the surface based on the light in the photo. But then you say it's 42m and you can't even see the bottom it makes me wonder.

EDIT: I am probably the farthest away from a diver you can get, and my post have no bad intentions. I am just curious :)

[–]is-serp 29 points30 points ago

I would say that visibility in the sea around Malta usually varies between 30 to 50m (~100 to 150 feet) when the conditions are ideal.

The place where this statue is located has a sandy bottom and is about half mile out at sea. Sea currents cause the water to silt up and that reduces visibility.

[–]YOU_ARE_A_FUCK 11 points12 points ago

Surprisingly good answer! Short, accurate and it even makes sense.

[–]is-serp 19 points20 points ago

[–]ihateafk 11 points12 points ago

I can't believe I waited for this gif to load

[–]arabisraeli 8 points9 points ago

you've never been more relevant.

[–]skybike 5 points6 points ago

You've officially rustled all of my jimmies, I no longer have any unrustled jimmies.. thanks.

[–]Fazer2 31 points32 points ago

Don't worry, he's just sleeping.

With the fishes.

[–]the_goat_boy 1 point2 points ago

500 fishes to be exact.

[–]the_phenom_imam 4 points5 points ago

Seeeeeeeee

[–]takemetohyrule 13 points14 points ago

Agreed. This would freak me out.

[–]Not_A_Real_Username 126 points127 points ago

The drowned God! For what is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger.

[–]larry-cripples 32 points33 points ago

We do not sow.

[–]mooprankster 16 points17 points ago

We are Ironborn.

[–]casualbattery 8 points9 points ago

HODOR!

[–]soyabstemio 56 points57 points ago

in the Maltese???

Are you crazy?

[–]thepantsman 37 points38 points ago

Malta? Or the Maldives?

[–]Jigsus 28 points29 points ago

Yes

[–]Menegrand 11 points12 points ago

Good hustle

[–]ienjoymen 6 points7 points ago

What?

[–]Pupikal 10 points11 points ago

Yeah

[–]Caiur 5 points6 points ago

Do Americans generally hear a lot about Malta, the country? I'm genuinely curious. I don't think I've ever seen an American TV show or film where it gets mentioned.

[–]grpace7 6 points7 points ago

I'm Maltese and I live in America. I have yet to meet another person from Malta in my 23 years.

[–]bamberoo 3 points4 points ago

I have a bunch of Maltese relatives that live in Michigan.

But we all mostly live in Canada.

[–]got_life 5 points6 points ago

We all live in Canada.

[–]otisshredding 5 points6 points ago

They don't. I'm American, and my paternal grandfather emigrated here from Malta in the 1930's, which means my last name is Maltese. And whenever anyone asks about my last name and I tell them the nationality, I get one of the following reactions:

"Where is that?" "Oh! Like the dog!" "Oh! Like the falcon!"

Sigh.

[–]trolling_thunder 4 points5 points ago

my last name is Maltese.

So what are you, like John Maltese?

[–]Caiur 2 points3 points ago

Borg Darmanin Attard Camilleri Vella Cassar Fenech Micallef. One of them?

[–]BitchesThinkImSexist 3 points4 points ago

.... The Maltese Falcon? (movie)

[–]auldlangsynee 2 points3 points ago

My dad emigrated to the US from Malta, when we mentioned Malta to people they usually know it exists but are unsure of the exact location.

[–]modka 118 points119 points ago

He dived for your sins.

[–]tower1 15 points16 points ago

It looks like he didn't get past John's baptism.

[–]xX_Justin_Xx 9 points10 points ago

He is working on turning the water into wine.

[–]dnbjarhead 67 points68 points ago

Algaesus

[–]ILL_Show_Myself_Out 35 points36 points ago

I love how that starfish is in his left hand... changes my entire impression of it. he's like "Steve! yo! check out this starfish, man"

[–]naloxone 12 points13 points ago

Apparently that is a huge starfish.

[–]20thCenturyClocks 4 points5 points ago

Do starfish grow to 3-4 feet? That's my guess on its size

[–]FiveSmash 5 points6 points ago

This picture is really misleading. The statue is not that big, the diver is in the background.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_of_the_Abyss

[–]78451326459787512136 2 points3 points ago

That's not even the same statue.

[–]eyelessfade 206 points207 points ago

So the walking on water was bullshit after all?

[–]LegionODD 41 points42 points ago

One could say he sank like a rock

[–]Somnioblivio 22 points23 points ago

Stone this man for his pun!

[–]utsavman 25 points26 points ago

Yeah, let's nail this guy !

[–]rainicornschlong 6 points7 points ago

I, for one, am very cross!

[–]Nesman64 4 points5 points ago

It was a lot easier before he had holes in his feet.

[–]StochasticOoze 39 points40 points ago

Why would you build a statue underwater?

That's just silly.

[–]Times_New_Viking 38 points39 points ago

Well you might think that if you've never been to Malta and you don't know anything about the island, so maybe some quick facts are in order;

Malta has more churches than any other nation and the island is only 17 miles by 9, they are very devout and often new popes visit the island when they are first pontificated.

They are an island in the middle of the Meditteranean that is reliant on tourism and to a large extent dive tourism. In fact one of the largest glass bottomed boat operators on the island sunk a large tug boat in 42 metres of water as a dive site. Its also home to many, many WWII era wreck dives. Underwater in Malta is quite spectacular.

Now put those two things together and you have underwater Jesus.

Edit; I was wrong about the churches. It just seemed like there was an awful lot when I was there.

[–]StochasticOoze 29 points30 points ago

You know, I was debating putting "this is a joke" or something in that post, but I figured everyone would realize I was joking.

[–]sistersunbeam 27 points28 points ago

I'm glad you didn't, now I know a little more about Malta! =]

[–]Times_New_Viking 11 points12 points ago

Oh well, maybe I was just looking for an excuse to post something about Malta. ;)

[–]MoRR1S 8 points9 points ago

You were not so wrong about the churches. Here in Malta there is a church in about every small town you can find, while in these towns there are also chapels. However, nowadays Christianity is slowly losing it's dominant force in our islands. The first step was when finally last year a referendum was held to introduce divorce, which the majority voted as a yes. The attendance in the churches is also decreasing by the days. Still, in our legislation i think there is still written thatour laws are based on the Christian belief

[–]rickster907 11 points12 points ago

Also, back in 1565 approximately a thousand Knights of Malta (plus 5,000 others, 6,000 total) held off an invasion of 48,000 Turks of The Ottoman Empire. The siege went on for months. One of the most brutal battles in history, and the Knights of Malta are rightly remembered for winning it.

[–]shatners_bassoon 5 points6 points ago

I've always wanted to go to Malta. The town of Valletta looks like an amazing place.

The story of how Malta survived being besieged during WWII is an amazing one.

[–]doggylog 3 points4 points ago

I have family in Malta. Great place. Never been diving in my life but next time I visit. I'm doing it.

[–]Bekaloha 2 points3 points ago

Malta isn't just one island, you know...

[–]IAmGoingToFuckThat 3 points4 points ago

There were a bunch of underwater billboards for Ivar's in Puget Sound.

[–]ProfBatman 35 points36 points ago

He looks like Neptune.

[–]karltee 46 points47 points ago

Nah, more like Poseidon.

[–]Poseidon-SS 25 points26 points ago

What the hell do you want?

[–]TehHpyfce 36 points37 points ago

Some rain here in Texas would be nice.

[–]pogiface 13 points14 points ago

God lives underwater

(90s reference)

[–]Eyetooth7 7 points8 points ago

God Lives Underwater was an awesome band.

[–]pogiface 5 points6 points ago

Looks like 2 of us remember, damn we are old. Yeah they were awesome , going back now and listening to them on youtube they still sound great. It was a huge part of the 90s for me

[–]v_la_dolphin 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought it said 'Famous underwear statue of Jesus'... not sure what I expected :/

[–]fetus_eater_skywalka 0 points1 point ago

Read that as underwear statue

I am disappoint

[–]poniesinmybasement 0 points1 point ago

Oh that's a funny way to spell poseidon

[–]essrowjers 0 points1 point ago

Aquajesus demands tribute

[–]hawg_ch 0 points1 point ago

Looks like Jesus couldn't walk on water.

(edit) I am christian. Just thought it was funny

[–]jcamilleri 3 points4 points ago

I live in Malta and I had no idea this was here. I know there's a popular legend stating there's a whole chapel underwater somewhere (complete with functioning candles) so it makes me wonder what else people have misplaced in the deep blue sea.

[–]MikeCam 2 points3 points ago

Haha I know right! There's still so much more we have to discover on this small rock fellow Camilleri.

[–]Huge_Jacked_Man 2 points3 points ago

respect the drowned god

[–]benzee123 2 points3 points ago

cool pic... where is this?

[–]jdinlocool[S] 10 points11 points ago

[–]zupman86 1 point2 points ago

[–]FromFrankie 0 points1 point ago

And Jesus said... "Here, have a starfish."

[–]RJBalderDash 0 points1 point ago

I was just in Malta a couple of weeks ago. It was lovely.

[–]jessenj 0 points1 point ago

Come at me bro!

[–]Fuddle 0 points1 point ago

I don't think there is a European or eastern country that in the last 4,000 years that hasn't invaded or tried to invade Malta.

[–]CastorTrollux 0 points1 point ago

Seaweed Jesus!

[–]baconhead 0 points1 point ago

The Drowned God.

[–]oatah 0 points1 point ago

Boethiah????

[–]FlynnRider 1 point2 points ago

anybody have a high res? i'd love to make starfish jesus my background.

[–]pa79 1 point2 points ago

Starfish Jesus would be the best rock band name ever.

[–]Ryan4516 1 point2 points ago

Read as famous underwear statue of Jesus in the Maltese.

Disappoint.

[–]Doctor_prof_rainbeau -1 points0 points ago

It's in Malta, it was a thing for pope John Paul the II, and it's pretty badass.

[–]scookie11 -1 points0 points ago

Can anyone explain exactly why it's underwater? Was it constructed/designed to be?

[–]MuffinatorXIII -1 points0 points ago

how deep is it? because i can only legally dive to 30m

[–]quietsnooze -1 points0 points ago

Well that's not nightmare inducing at all..

[–]Lantro -1 points0 points ago

There's also this guy off the coast of the Florida Keys.

[–]Disasstah -1 points0 points ago

And then he created STARFISH and it was good!

[–]qb_dp 0 points1 point ago

"Father, why have you forsaken me ?"

[–]djdropit 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of God Lives Under Waters first full length, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empty_(God_Lives_Underwater_album)

[–]chrisncsu 0 points1 point ago

All I can think when I see this is...

"It's a big blue watery road. Poseidon, loooook at meeeeee."

[–]Steffi_van_Essen -1 points0 points ago

Furry Jesus

[–]idgman94 0 points1 point ago

"BRING TO ME ALL OF YOUR LICHEN! THE STARFISH WILLS IT!" - Drunk Jesus

[–]TracyMorganFreeman -1 points0 points ago

That scuba diver does not appear entertained.

[–]LightningRider -1 points0 points ago

The scale human-statue is so wrong.

[–]josephanthony -1 points0 points ago

"Don't just fucking float there staring - help me, dude!"

[–]FindingIt -1 points0 points ago

Somebody get that statue a trident with the quickness!

[–]catmoon 1 point2 points ago

There's a similar statue in John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park in Florida [photo].

It used to be covered in fire coral so if you got too close you might get a rash (kind of like a jellyfish sting).

[–]jmdxsvhs15 0 points1 point ago

hes like, "yo man, I got this starfish. You wanna buy this starfish?"...

[–]the7thcolumn -1 points0 points ago

that's obviously Poseidon...he's just missing his Trident

[–]Girafferra -1 points0 points ago

Hes got the whole...starfish in his hand...

[–]Chopperguy -1 points0 points ago

I'm surprised Jesus hasn't been "restored" yet.

[–]Penilesurprise 0 points1 point ago

I don't like this at all. This scares me.

[–]ScottiDoo 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me or is that starfish really big

[–]redditfromwork -1 points0 points ago

"Come at me bro."

[–]pakron 0 points1 point ago

False alarm guys, it's just Swamp Thing again.

[–]takes-juan-2-no-juan -1 points0 points ago

[–]tummasa -1 points0 points ago

[–]Aaronmcom -1 points0 points ago

Nigga.. dats Poseidon

[–]totomlee93 -1 points0 points ago

I thought Jesus was supposed to be able to walk on water.

[–]Glizz5th 0 points1 point ago

Actually it's pretty cool because I was on Malta this summer and took two specialities and my friend (Master Diver) told me about this. He talked about it all the time! BTW, have you seen the gigantic stranded boat outside the coast of Malta? That dive would be amazing too.

[–]x3r0h0ur 0 points1 point ago

OH LORD! Why hast thou given me this starfish!?

[–]JingleBellsSwag -1 points0 points ago

What's dead may never die

[–]Inglorioushame -1 points0 points ago

pretty sure thats Poseidon..

[–]anakinhokasy -1 points0 points ago

There's a ninja star in Jesus's hand, the parts of jesus life that's missing was spent mastering the art of ninjutsu.

[–]lawrence_tom -1 points0 points ago

How did it get there? ALIENS!!

[–]Tebasaki -1 points0 points ago

On the third day he rose, so they gave him cement boots and made damn sure he wouldn't rise again. Walk on water my ass.

[–]Spanish_3 -1 points0 points ago

I am willing to bet this will show up on my facebook news feed within a week with a caption along the lines of: "like if you think Jesus is awesome, ignore if you don't :("

[–]fulham 0 points1 point ago

Jesus Christ!

[–]thinkpadius -1 points0 points ago

Even the fish need Jesus.

[–]sirius_star -1 points0 points ago

And no one asks "well how did it get under water" this is how you die

[–]FCOS 0 points1 point ago

This is the first time I've seen this. I guess I need to brush up on my jesus statues

[–]wamco -1 points0 points ago

"You guys, don't just fucking leave me down here."

[–]karlomac -1 points0 points ago

Blistering Barnacles and Jesus Jumped-Up Christ!

[–]workacct20910 -1 points0 points ago

[–]Gabbywabby_21 0 points1 point ago

[–]strawbaby27 -1 points0 points ago

I read that as "famous underwear statue"

[–]VCRrepairman -1 points0 points ago

Come at me bro!

[–]TheBoyWhoDid -1 points0 points ago

I read this is Famous Underwear statue. I feel stupid.

[–]armedwithturtles -1 points0 points ago

how did it get there anyways?

[–]iamaqtp2t 0 points1 point ago

Malta is awesome and completely backwards. I was there in 2010 visiting my buddy who moved there from Montreal. The buses (at the time) varied from 1940s - 1990s. Some of them could barely make it up the hills in first gear. BUT, the taxi cabs had wifi, which we don't even have in Canada. Weird.

[–]philtomato -1 points0 points ago

You know what would be awesome? A Statue of Cthulu twice the size and reaching out towards you.

[–]sc2bigjoe -1 points0 points ago

Fake. Jesus can walk on water

[–]SkahBoosh -1 points0 points ago

Darn, I was gonna guess Poseidon...

[–]mylegisapenis 0 points1 point ago

And Jesus said to the Sea Star, "Today, you will sit on my left hand..."

[–]Menoku -1 points0 points ago

[–]Bickyyy -1 points0 points ago

I hope a fish eats it away. Or a tsunami destroys it :)

[–]Skybakery89 1 point2 points ago

Scary

[–]OakTownMormon 0 points1 point ago

That's one huge star fish

[–]GaelGuts 0 points1 point ago

"Guys! I found a starfish! Spread the good news!"

[–]BB64 0 points1 point ago

I caught a fish this big!

[–]shutupjoey 0 points1 point ago

Makes me wonder what other sculptures might be hidden underwater.

[–]manlord -1 points0 points ago

He was killed by 10 million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey...for our sins.

[–]b_deam 0 points1 point ago

pretty cool, kinda creepy though

[–]Salael 0 points1 point ago

There is another one in Key Largo, Florida. I have dove that several times when I was a kid. No one ever believed me that the statue is covered in Fire Coral. That shit burns like a motherfucker. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_of_the_Abyss

[–]angusross93 0 points1 point ago

Its actually called Christ Of The Abyss. I recall reading somewhere about how there is more than one although the others are hidden and if you find them all and plot the points you find something, has anyone else heard anything like this?

[–]evillive 1 point2 points ago

Some day it will come to life and attack cities...

[–]UtopiaToaster 0 points1 point ago

He should have never joined Davy Jones' crew.

[–]flatsperm 0 points1 point ago

That's not a statue...

[–]Tesla6009 0 points1 point ago

TIL it was actually 1 star on his left hand.

[–]theshethatsaid 0 points1 point ago

That is one gigantic starfish.

[–]principe_di_reddit 0 points1 point ago

so is the size of this thing about perception, because that starfish on his hand is about the same size as the diver if it isnt....

[–]darkpaladin 0 points1 point ago

I feel like the boss is about to come alive and then you will have to fight him to conquer the water temple...I play too many video games.

[–]capt_slim 1 point2 points ago

Why have you forsunken me?

[–]MrFatalistic 0 points1 point ago

This feels like a obscure fallout 3 location.

[–]dresmasher 0 points1 point ago

his father is probably on good terms with Poseidon

[–]MikeCam -1 points0 points ago

Hey look, Malta! That's where I live, seen it in person, it's pretty damn beautiful.

[–]KaReHo 0 points1 point ago
