Especially when they try to claim it's based on eyewitness accounts, or is old folklore.

No, not at all. They're so completely different it's like saying Tom Hanks is the original Zach Galifianakis. Yeah, they're both creepy, but for totally different reasons. Slenderman is creepy in the faceless-horror-that-you-know-is-right-behind-you-but-you-don't-want-to-look way. Saladfingers is just creepy in the this-guy-weirds-me-out way. Slenderman remains mysterious and unknown to us. Saladfingers, over time, becomes better known to us as series progresses to the point where we can actually feel for him and care about him.

The media they appear in is totally different. Saladfingers is only in animated flash videos, totally controlled by one guy. Slenderman, on the other hand, exists in short stories and youtube ARGs, basically controlled by the imagination of everyone. The two characters are just so different it's exactly like comparing apples and oranges. They're both fruits. That's about it.

I saw a comment on youtube that explained that there was a nuclear war that killed pretty much everything and made saladfingers crazy. Saladfingers had to eat humans to survive and he made puppets out of their skin that's why he can taste them when he licks the puppets. Also the random screams the puppets make are the last screams the people did when Saladfingers killed them and ate them.
