Steam servers crash

[–]TheB1ade 29 points30 points ago

more like "steam servers are currently undergoing maintainance, steam will automaticly reconnect when they are available."

Sound familiar?

[–]Colorfag 4 points5 points ago

Every fucking night.

[–]TheB1ade 2 points3 points ago

They call that regular maintainance?

[–]martinarcand1 2 points3 points ago

Game are usually available, it's stuff such as friend lists and Steam cloud that doesn't work. So say you're playing TF2, you won't have access to your usual loadout

[–]dubblix 0 points1 point ago

Its' been kicking people out of Borderlands 2 online co-op. I haven't suffered because we use LAN, but my coworker has been booted from playing with his friends.

[–]martinarcand1 0 points1 point ago

If the co-op uses Steam then yes you'd be booted since during the maintenance the friend's list stop working.

[–]dubblix 0 points1 point ago

The online co-op does, but the LAN does not.

[–]emfyo 0 points1 point ago

Not nearly as bad as MMO maintenance, at least we can still game

[–]martinarcand1 3 points4 points ago

Not really a crash, more like daily maintenance to ensure it doesn't crash.

An actual crash happened like 2-3 times, 1 time while I was playing, and I play a lot, so nothing too worrisome.

[–]TheB1ade -1 points0 points ago

How do you know it was a crash?

[–]martinarcand1 1 point2 points ago

A crash would be where 0 users are currently playing.

Maintenance affects some users, not all

[–]TheB1ade -1 points0 points ago

That would be assuming everyone connected to 1 server, which they don't. A global outage is more likely to be an update to the system than a crash.

[–]martinarcand1 0 points1 point ago

I believe everyone connects to a series of master servers. If said master servers are down, everyone is down as well.

[–]TheB1ade -1 points0 points ago

Well yeah but the machines are independent. They wouldn't all go down at the same time. Given they are in separate continents and datacenters. 0 users would be a global update to these machines, as you couldn't do them one at a time without causing big problems.

Windows auto-update and restarts?

[–]neverdeadned 10 points11 points ago

i think steam updates is a more likely explanation.

[–]Moar4x4 15 points16 points ago

that...actually could be it..

[–]r3volts 14 points15 points ago

i doubt it, steam is world wide. My 3am auto update and restart is probably 4pm somewhere else

[–]domasin 7 points8 points ago

Damn, everyone back to the drawing boards!

[–]xSk3lY -2 points-1 points ago

But still, just because it's 3am for you, and 4pm for someone else, it would still happen at the same time, just not the same time of the day.

[–]quaggas 0 points1 point ago

Who runs system updates at 4pm?

[–]xSk3lY -1 points0 points ago

People who work hard, and play hard!

[–]mattthebamf 0 points1 point ago

doubtful. would only be on update tuesdays.

[–]tfgot 0 points1 point ago

Explains the update they pushed today.

[–]Vianim 7 points8 points ago

Steam updates. Been a few over the last few days, and that would be most of the active users currently not gaming clicking restart as soon as the update appears. They are only offline for a few seconds, but with enough people it would be enough to see a spike.

we know everyone's fap time

[–]ledtechnololgy 2 points3 points ago

I fap to game trailers on Steam.

[–]ozinator 6 points7 points ago

Steam updates a bunch of servers every week, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon Pacific time. The midday one... I would just call that an exciting day at work.

[–]Steeled14 5 points6 points ago

Steam went down twice today for me and my friends while playing Borderlands 2. Makes me a saaaaaad panda.

all hail spacebutterfly.

[–]cypocryphy 1 point2 points ago

that first one is right around 4:20. i reckon that time correlates to the pacific timezone, which contains california, the most populace american state and alleged source of the 420 phenomenon. the latter is most certainly fap-time.

[–]_YourMom 1 point2 points ago

downtime for certain region's servers.

[–]devoidz -1 points0 points ago

fap break ?

[–]meatpuppet79 1 point2 points ago

Parts of steam (like chat for example) go down on a regular basis for maintenance that usually lasts an hour or so. Users appear offline in that time.

[–]thefourthhouse 1 point2 points ago

Fap downtime?

[–]smeehrrr 1 point2 points ago

The one on Tuesday was scheduled maintenance, the one on Wednesday morning was a bug that took down a bunch of servers briefly.

[–]iceplanet2002 0 points1 point ago

Reverse spike... you mean a dip? a valley? a trough?
