Jerry Rees*... Jerry Reese is the general manager for the New York Giants.

[–]brodiemann 15 points16 points ago

That's what I thought, too, then "Damn, that guy has a lot of pull!"

[–]searingmight 2 points3 points ago

It's always nice hearing the name of someone who lives in your home town. I actually go to school with his son

[–]zionxgodkiller 3 points4 points ago

I had no clue who Jerry Reese, googled him to find out that the GM of the Giants said the toaster was a chick, in which I thought....wtf....why is this even important. I iz dumb. Thank you for clarifying lol

[–]NoNeedForAName 2 points3 points ago

Fun Fact: Jerry Reese grew up not too far from me.

Fun Fact #2: Jerry Reese is about the only good thing to ever come out of Tiptonville, Tennessee. (Carl Perkins is also from that area.)

[–]atypicaldude 0 points1 point ago

They also make some fine meth in that area.

[–]NoNeedForAName 0 points1 point ago

That's what I hear. (I'm a lawyer, so I run into meth heads pretty often.) I guess they know what they're doing. It's been a long time since I've heard about a meth lab exploding.

[–]whyyesiAMinterested 66 points67 points ago

Now the boner I've had for so long makes sense.

[–]Udub 27 points28 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

[–]whyyesiAMinterested 20 points21 points ago

relax, it's science

[–]ProperSauce 16 points17 points ago

IT'S A TOASTER

[–]whyyesiAMinterested 15 points16 points ago

exactly

[–]JrtheWriter[S] 51 points52 points ago

Voice actress of Toaster also co wrote The Casper movie... just throwing that out there.

[–]Schmackelnuts 30 points31 points ago

AND the Animaniacs AND her son was the voice of the kid who came out of his house and yelled things AND I've met them both.

[–]derpinita 15 points16 points ago

Anything else?

[–]Schmackelnuts 17 points18 points ago

AND they're both smart as shit. I played Trivial Pursuit with them. I almost died they beat me so bad.

[–]colourmeblue 1 point2 points ago

I suck at Trivial Pursuit =(

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 3 points4 points ago

DON'T FEEL BAD, IT'S TRIVIAL.

[–]le_canuck 5 points6 points ago

Which was produced by Waterman Entertainment, which has recently announced they're remaking The Brave Little Toaster. My god, we've gone full circle.

[–]fiduciary 28 points29 points ago

[–]whatgetsyouoff 2 points3 points ago

As a girl, this is exactly how I felt when I read the title of this post (I missed the AMA).

[–]faptop123 112 points113 points ago

Why are you so invested in the sex of a cartoon toaster?

[–]SpruceCaboose 125 points126 points ago

Finding out a character you cared about was a different gender than what you imaginary assigned it can be a bit jarring. At least that is how it is for me. I am not bothered by it or anything, it's just contrary to what my mental picture was.

[–]Inityx 51 points52 points ago

Blue from Blue's Clues was a girl, and Magenta was a boy.

[–]Hime_Takamura 47 points48 points ago

[–]Inityx 32 points33 points ago

Right, sorry, it was periwinkle that was the boy.

[–]Xeracy 11 points12 points ago

I dont know why the fact that this exists surprises me...

[–]Hime_Takamura 19 points20 points ago

I had so many classmates in elementary school who insisted Magenta was a boy. I was so pissed that no one believed me. BUT NOW I CAN BE HEARD.

[–]angg56 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure he was talking about there being a blues clues wiki.

[–]Astrocricket 5 points6 points ago

Right, so there's a Wiki for that

[–]HoraceLongwood -1 points0 points ago

Grizzly Adams did have a beard.

[–]aposter 0 points1 point ago

No he didn't. His love interest was named Ben, for gods sake. You can't get much more out of the closet than that.

[–]SpruceCaboose 0 points1 point ago

That show is a bit too young for me, but the same idea I guess.

[–]cydril 26 points27 points ago

I grew up thinking Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh was a girl. It was a bit strange finding out the truth, but it doesn't change anything.

[–]lowguns3 14 points15 points ago

That's like thinking Squidward is a girl.

[–]ZaneBarrow 0 points1 point ago

... what?

[–]shuniah 0 points1 point ago

So did I ... I wonder why?

[–]electricmice 0 points1 point ago

they drew him with mustache whiskers too. also the face is very masculine.

[–]cydril 0 points1 point ago

I think it was the voice. I imagined a really old lady.

[–]fishyfishbait 0 points1 point ago

wtf

my life is a lie

[–]adam_anarchist 19 points20 points ago

...Rabbit wasn't even ambiguous...of course he's a guy.

[–]TheDroopy 14 points15 points ago

[–]Erzsabet 1 point2 points ago

What is this?

[–]TheDroopy 12 points13 points ago

An Easter egg in Metroid for the NES. It's Samus.

[–]Erzsabet 2 points3 points ago

Ah, I hadn't played that one, only Super Metroid. I have argued a few times with people who didn't know Samus was a chick. I don't see how, since when you die you see her in her underwear.

[–]Nanobot 2 points3 points ago

When you die in the original Metroid, you just sort of blow up as you are. Of course, if you play the plus game, you're running around the whole game in just a leotard.

[–]SpruceCaboose 1 point2 points ago

Like that, except I never liked Metroid much...

ducks

[–]mccrackalakin -1 points0 points ago

The gif doesn't really depict "jarring", though. It's more like a "fuck everything" type emotion.

Of course, if you were just speaking personally, then disregard what I've said.

[–]SpruceCaboose 0 points1 point ago

I was speaking personally, but the idea I think being after you are jarred, you just go "fuck everything", kinda like "my whole life is a lie". I took it to be absurd hyperbole for comedic effect.

[–]who_is_JG 14 points15 points ago

It's like when people found out that Dumbledore is gay. It doesn't make him any less great as a character. But since it isn't explicitly stated in the books many people assumed he was straight/possibly asexual (He is like 115 at the time of his death, so he might just not be interested in doing the nasty). When Rowling came out and stated that he was, in fact, gay it surprised a lot of people. Everyone still loves Dumbledore, we just were surprised to hear of his orientation. Same with the toaster, both my sister and I thought it was a boy. Still got love for the toaster, but now its a she-toaster.

[–]novalsi 1 point2 points ago

I think it's - for me, anyway - the fact that as a male (or anyone, really), we automate the association of "thing" with male.

It may be different for a non-English speaker, whose language's nouns have genders, but I think that anything that's not GIVEN a gender has the "default" gender, which I would consider male.

I identified with that boy (toaster), and I'm sure a lot of other boys did, too. Hell, if that toaster's male, that's the first buddy comedy I ever saw.

But whether it matters or not (it does not, really, to me), the idealization we've created in our heads has been torn out from under us.

I think it's kinda cool, really - i'm going to watch it again soon to see if anything's different based on my new angle - but it's still kind of shocking.

(Ninja Edit - this is EASILY the longest comment I've ever left on Reddit.)

[–]DubDubz 2 points3 points ago

That's not actually true and I can prove it! Which gendered pronoun would you associate with a boat?

[–]novalsi 0 points1 point ago

Probably biased, Navy vet. I say male.

[–]Stembio 1 point2 points ago

That is weird. Boats are almost always referred to with female pronouns.

[–]aposter 0 points1 point ago

Yes. That is weird, especially if novalsi was a vet from almost any European or the U.S. navy. Almost all of them have a tradition of feminine reference for ships as far as I know.

[–]tr33beard 0 points1 point ago

I remember my High School Prom, I went with Midway the most beautiful girl in school.

[–]DubDubz 0 points1 point ago

Huh, my apologies then. I've legitimately never encountered that.

[–]la_guiri 0 points1 point ago

there was a study showing that, for example, when asked if they thought a bridge looked more female or male, a spanish-speaker would say it looked female and a french-speaker would say it looks male, and sure enough, in the spanish language the word is feminine and in french it is masculine.

[–]LittleInfidel 6 points7 points ago

Okay, I've had a bit of a beef with this and I've got to get it out.

I call shenanigans on Dumbledore being a gay character.

I'm not opposed to him being gay in the sense that I don't like gay characters. Woohoo for role model LGBT characters. BUT.

This little tidbit came out right as the movie series was nearing the end. I really think it was a publicity thing to keep the hype going. And he's the perfect character for it. He's too old to have a romantic subplot, so she doesn't have to own up to it in any real way in the books. He's just a safe bet. Non-threatening enough for it to still be vaguely acceptable and get the added hype bonus.

I normally wouldn't give a shit, but damn I want a legitimate LGBT character in literature. It's not like they're non-existent, but you never seem to run into a homosexual character in fiction where their entire plot isn't solely about that fact. I want it to be a real thing, but my bullshit meter is going off.

So. ahem Yes. Now that I've ranted all over this comment... I'll be on my way.

[–]whatshenanigans 9 points10 points ago

I actually think JK Rowling did write Dumbledore's sexuality into the story, but not explicitly since it is a children's book at the end of the day.

I thought the whole reason he followed Grindelwald around the world was because he was in love with him. He had no other motivation.

But maybe it's because I'm gay myself that I read into his story in that way.

[–]AwesomeMcPants 3 points4 points ago

I think you're right. I read it first and saw them as good friends, but with the context of the announcement reading it again, he was totally in love with Grindelwald. That's why it tore him up so much.

[–]Allisonaxe 0 points1 point ago

all we really saw of the relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore was a memory left behind for a student of his. of course he is going to leave out the exact nature of the relationship, because it wasn't really super important... but it was also very apparent that Dumbledore had a special admiration, its just never elaborated on other than "he likes the guy and his ideas."

[–]LittleInfidel 0 points1 point ago

It probably ruins my credibility, but I haven't read the last book (I know, I know, bring on the pitchforks). A few friends have brought the same thing up, but I have many a friend who takes subtext a little far.

[–]my_little_epona 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, if you read the last book you basically get all the answers about Dumbledore and why he did what he did etc. etc. so even when I was reading it (straight female) and it got to his incredibly obsessive relationship with Grindelwald it was like thaaat sounds like a romantic relationship. It isn't explicit but it definitely goes a bit beyond "bros" to me.

[–]Kuge 1 point2 points ago

I only read the first book...

[–]who_is_JG 11 points12 points ago

I don't think that JK Rowling would do it just for publicity. She doesn't seem the type. Plus she was already rolling (Rowling?) in piles of money when she told people about Dumble's sexual orientation and the movies and books had quite enough hype already. You also say that you want a legit LGBT character in a story that doesn't revolve around their LGBT status. Dude, that is Dumbledore. He is gay, but the series isn't about his sexual orientation at all. It is only barely hinted at and not harped upon or made a big deal of.

[–]LittleInfidel 0 points1 point ago

That's why I brought up the legit character thing. I want it to be true because you're totally right, he fits the bill. But I can't get over the suspicion I've got that it's all one big stunt, which takes away from the idea for me.

I could also be a crackpot, all depends haha.

[–]who_is_JG 3 points4 points ago

I don't think you are a crackpot. It could be a stunt. But I doubt it. I genuinely think that Rowling created Dumbledore as a gay character. Maybe not from the first book, She might not have known he was gay then. Writers of long series often realize attributes of their characters that they didn't picture at first. For example Phillip Pullman liked the fact that when they adapted The Golden Compass for film (not a great adaption, but the casting was well done) he liked the fact that they made an important female character blonde instead of brunette. He said that he "should have known she was blonde the whole time". If I had to guess, I would say that Rowling never really thought of Dumbledore's sexuality until maybe as late as the sixth book. The sixth book, with its focus on finding out information on Riddle's past, also in turn gave us more information on Dumbledore's past. At least, his past as it related to teaching Tom Riddle. I think that sometime during the writing of the last two books she (Rowling) must have realized that a homosexual Dumbledore made perfect sense. Obviously, she couldn't just come out and tell everyone, or make it explicit in the book. That would be all anyone talked about or thought of about the last book, the fact that Dumbledore is gay. That wasn't at all what she wanted, because the book isn't about Dumbledore being gay (I mean, he is barely even in it). So she just barely hinted at it, and didn't make it a huge part of the story. She only revealed this piece of information after specifically asked by a fan if Dumbledore had ever fallen in love. She replied that he had fallen in love with his intellectual equal Gellert Grindlevald. So I doubt it is a stunt. It is just a fact that really didn't require a whole lot of attention within the series because it is a really ancillary fact that has no bearing on the plot of any of the books. Also, she mentioned it after all of the books had come out, and most of the explosive sales were over. Every true fan had already read it. It wasn't like she was ruining the dreams of some die hard shippers just hoping for some steamy Dumbledore+Mcgonnagal action in the staff room. I can't believe I just wrote that...... sorry. Thats my take on it though.

[–]Flatlander81 1 point2 points ago

Maybe it was because I read them after the announcements were made but I was under the impression that the Grendelwald relationship / letters pretty much confirmed his gayness in universe.

[–]I_TYPE_IN_ALL_CAPS 1 point2 points ago

I normally wouldn't give a shit, but damn I want a legitimate LGBT character in literature.

THEY SHOULD WRITE MORE BOOKS WHERE A WOMAN FINALLY FEELS COMPLETE AFTER MAKING A NEW GAY BEST FRIEND. THEY COULD GO SHOPPING TOGETHER AND GO OUT ON THE TOWN.

THAT'S WHAT WE CALL PUSHING THE ENVELOPE, RIGHT THERE.

[–]ThePlaceWhere 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure why exactly she said Dumledore was gay, but I honestly don't think she wrote the books with that in mind. Maybe it occurred to her afterward, maybe it was a publicity thing. I don't know, but I don't think anyone is reading the books thinking oh, this is a gay character. If she wanted to write in a gay character maybe she could have done one of the Weasley twins or someone in the Order of the Phoenix. I dunno just seemed a little out of place to me.

[–]paperd 4 points5 points ago

JK always approves the HP movie scripts before filming. When she was reading through the script for the sixth movie she noticed a line that had Dumbledore fondly reminiscing about an old girlfriend he had when he was a teenager. She circled it, wrote "Dumbledore is gay," and sent the script back. That's essentially how he came out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rowling knew from the beginning. She has lists and scraps of paper and notes and pages written about the details and histories of the wizarding world. She might even know the sexuality of Archie, the old wizard who wanted to wear a dress to the Quiddich World Cup.

[–]ThePlaceWhere 0 points1 point ago

I was under the impression she said he was gay during an interview.

[–]paperd 0 points1 point ago

She did. But it was spawned by the script incident.

[–]JustHappyToLurk 0 points1 point ago

How did I miss this?? Dumbledore is gay?

[–]electricmice -1 points0 points ago

which is the worse spoiler, dumbledore is gay or snapes kills dumbledore? lol.

[–]joshmccrillis 4 points5 points ago

Where is this gif from?

[–]buak 3 points4 points ago

It's from a finnish sketch comedy TV show called "Kummeli".

edit: the specific sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7_Qko2xrjA

[–]ICanBeAnyone 0 points1 point ago

"Cinnamon"?

[–]buak 0 points1 point ago

Nope.

Wikipedia:

Kummeli comes from a Finnish word for a sea marker (basically, a pile of stones, a cairn) which indicates territorial waters.

[–]melechkibitzer 8 points9 points ago

Is the toaster itself a girl or just the voice actor because that shit happens all the time with youthful sounding voices.

[–]JrtheWriter[S] 17 points18 points ago

the voice actor AND the Toaster according to the Director.

[–]melechkibitzer 11 points12 points ago

Sumbitch! Really didn't seem like a girl to me but ok. Need more female protagonists anyway, it's really not an equal split (although these days girl protagonists are starting to become really common so maybe I'm stupidly wrong idk)

[–]KShults 4 points5 points ago

There were TOOOOONS of disney movies featuring female protagonists.

[–]Lt_Ziggella_Stardust 10 points11 points ago

But they all sucked, who wants to be Cinderella or Snow white? Mulan was cool though.

[–]kriegler 3 points4 points ago

I hated going to parties with other girls when I was a kid - they were always either a fairy, a princess, or a fairy princess. I was the only pirate ever

[–]AranaiRa 2 points3 points ago

And yet, Disney's marketing department pretends Mulan doesn't exist for their various princess products.

Probably because Mulan would kick their asses if they made her act all girly.

[–]GoddessBud 5 points6 points ago

Mulan was not a princess. Just gonna throw that out there...Disney Heroine and Disney Princess are not the same thing.

[–]AriBBCP 2 points3 points ago

probably because mulan wasn't a princess

[–]Erzsabet -1 points0 points ago

TONS of little girls out there want to be those princesses. You should see how popular princess parties are becoming (or have been, not sure about before) and how much little girls love seeing the Princesses at Disneyland/world.

[–]adam_anarchist 2 points3 points ago

but no one wants to be them within their stories

they are useless

[–]Erzsabet -1 points0 points ago

But they are pretty and get to wear pretty clothing, and that's something a lot of little girls love.

[–]melechkibitzer 2 points3 points ago

True tinkerbell, princess and the frog, lots of other films that came out around them damn I fucked up what do ya know. I guess what I meant was more like a female strong hero type character like Kill Bill or Brave or something, more badassery that's usually reserved for male leads. Totally is more common than I was initially thinking though.

[–]Erzsabet 3 points4 points ago

It's changing more now, but most of the older style princesses are a less "badass" because of WHEN those movies were written. Snow White came out in 1937, and Cinderella came out in 1950. Badass like we have now wouldn't have been appropriate. Tiana in Frog Princess was more "do for herself" and fought for what she wanted.

[–]KShults 2 points3 points ago

Mulan springs to mind, but I can't think of too many other strong female leads.

[–]riceowl -1 points0 points ago

rapunzel in tangled was pretty strong as well.

[–]Allisonaxe 1 point2 points ago

I loved that movie, and I loved how she was strong and yet not the kind of strong female design that I like to think of as "boy-in-a-dress." too many writers seem to think that to make a "strong female lead" they must remove feminine aspects and replace with "male action hero" behaviors... Rapunzel managed to avoid that: she's not some tough girl doing male things and keeping up with the boys, she's a girl with a dream and a lot of perseverance. at the end of the day, she's a girl, and she still wants to be a princess. she doesn't want to defy her gender, just redefine it a little. and I like that.

That the movie plays with "tough guys" with dreams that are not exactly what you would expect a tough looking bandit type to want is also a plus, too. I think of all the recent disney flicks, Tangled does the best at having healthy but non-standard displays of gender.

[–]WhitePostIt 22 points23 points ago

As an animator I can't help but believe this to be inconsistent and perhaps not planned. Based on the mannerisms, the structure of the mouth, eyes and eyebrows, and the character design, Toaster certainly was not designed as female. Perhaps along the way of the production process and after voice acting had been finished, they realized that they only had male characters, and someone higher up wanted a female in there. The only character who could fit that in both voice and design was the Toaster - only two characters have high pitched voices; Toaster and Blanky. Lampy and Kirby were not only male in voice, but clearly had male designs. Radio could've been made into a female, but his voice was clearly male. In the end it was decided that Toaster would be female rather than Blanky. In fact, I'd have to watch the movie, but I don't think I recall any female-gender oriented appliances in that movie. In the sequels, Toaster is referred to as a male.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 11 points12 points ago

In fact, I'd have to watch the movie, but I don't think I recall any female-gender oriented appliances in that movie.

There are plenty, most notably in the modern apartment. Also some of the cars.

[–]tuckerfrye 4 points5 points ago

Those last two sentences were the most surreal non-porn related sentences I've ever read.

[–]StaticSabre 0 points1 point ago

Also, a female voice actor doesn't necessarily mean that the character is female, as women are often used to voice young male characters.

[–]WhitePostIt 0 points1 point ago

He explicitly said that Taoster was not only voiced by a female, but was actually supposed to be female. That's the bit that doesn't fit with the character design.

[–]mortalkonlaw 24 points25 points ago

Well the toaster did have a slot, so ...

[–]TimeTravelMishap 14 points15 points ago

2 slots and a mouth actually. It all fits.

[–]rhott 27 points28 points ago

This ruins the childhood.

[–]Moonchopper 3 points4 points ago

WHEN THE FUCK DID HE DO AN AMA?! I loved the Brave Little Toaster. I'm going to kill myself for missing this AMA.

Ok, to be honest, I didn't know that Jerry Reese was involved with Brave Little Toaster.

[–]SPACEDGHOST 3 points4 points ago

He wasn't. Jerry Rees was.

[–]CricketPinata 2 points3 points ago

Yesterday.

[–]clevergirl83 3 points4 points ago

And that's why I've never hit on a toaster. You never can tell.

[–]omnilynx 7 points8 points ago

What is the significance of gender in appliances which don't reproduce or have a society oriented around gender roles?

[–]Erzsabet 2 points3 points ago

For kids it's easier to identify with characters who share certain traits and such. In this instance, girls could have felt more connected with the character had it been more obvious that she was female. I often find myself reading books with strong female main characters because this is a trait I would like to emulate, for instance.

[–]arthen78 2 points3 points ago

Funny, none of my toasters have genitalia.

[–]FatesReverend 3 points4 points ago

You mean you couldn't tell??

[–]slykido999 3 points4 points ago

I always thought Toaster was a female, the voice was obviously a woman. I guess I don't see what was so "male" about Toaster.

[–]Dreadnaught_179 1 point2 points ago

My second favorite gif now

[–]Scherzkeks 1 point2 points ago

Mind = blown.

[–]humangirltype 0 points1 point ago

say what?!

[–]ThatIsMyHat 2 points3 points ago

My whole life is a lie.

[–]shatonamime 0 points1 point ago

You stick bread in a toaster, often two at a time, then it gets hot and finally arrives. Of course it's a girl.

[–]iLubDango 1 point2 points ago

I don't know why you guys are so surprised The brave little toasters voice was pretty girly.

[–]OnTheMidnightTrain 1 point2 points ago

I always assumed "he" was just a kid, and lets face it, before guys hit puberty their voices can be easily mistaken as a girls.

[–]kettnert 1 point2 points ago

Deanna Oliver My AP Physics teacher's sister. We didn't believe him, but he showed us proof with pictures and the such. Blew my mind that my childhood was so closely connected to what's going on now.

[–]Xvalai 0 points1 point ago

That's how I felt when I found out the same thing about Alfonse in Fullmetal Alchemist.

[–]cleverlyyours 1 point2 points ago

I still don't know why that was such a surprise to everyone.

[–]animeari 1 point2 points ago

Hmm, it always seemed obvious to me that Toaster was female...I guess I'm in the minority, lol.

Edit: Clarity

[–]ejallison 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure toasters don't have genders

[–]tminus54321 0 points1 point ago

Proof That Toaster was a boy.

[–]rjshatz 0 points1 point ago

this relieves me of some masturbation guilt. not a lot but a little.

[–]karlibear 1 point2 points ago

[–]awesomechemist 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure that they refer to the toaster as "he" in the first movie as well...

[–]boiler_up -1 points0 points ago

Aaaand thanks for ruining it for those of us who were fortunate enough to miss that.

[–]PixieFurious 0 points1 point ago

But.... the Toaster IS a boy. They refer to him as "he" a few times... DON'T THEY??

[–]pottisher 0 points1 point ago

well, for me the toaster will always be a "he", i grew up watching the the spanish (mexican) dubbed version and he had a dude's voice

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llm3MbOwZMw

[–]DarkfangAl -1 points0 points ago

Well what do you expect? The toaster has two holes which their main use is putting stuff in them.

[–]Loblod 0 points1 point ago

What is this GIF from?

[–]mstain -1 points0 points ago

Brave Little Whatnow?

[–]Padonogan 0 points1 point ago

TIL that toasters have genders

[–]zorflieg 0 points1 point ago

But the trailer says "join this brave little toaster and HIS unusual pals."

[–]blat_woman 0 points1 point ago

So YOU'RE the reason Hollywood is afraid to make movies with female protagonists...

[–]sociallyawkwarddildo 0 points1 point ago

How can a toaster have a gender?

Thank you. My life now has no purpose. I'd leave you all my karma, but there's no way you'd be able to divide all 6 of it between you all. Good day Reddit.

I think the two biggest surprise motherfucker moments for mistaken gender in my youth were that egg spitting dinosaur thing in Super Mario Bros 2, and Poison from Final Fight. Next thing you know, someone is gonna reveal that the Battletoads were women...then again, Jurassic Park taught me that certain frogs swap their gender...GODDAMMIT!!!

[–]PonyParkour 0 points1 point ago
