      Here's a few facts about this .gif image: This was originally only on MySpace. That is a real AK-47. The pistol is a .40 Cal Baby Desert Eagle II. My ex-wife liked me in Ecko Cut & Sew shirts...which is why I'm wearing that...plus it got me extra booty when I'd dress like that. I was practicing drawing because I had just got my CHL, and used to carry that particular pistol, now I carry a .357 Desert Eagle.       To be fair a handgun round compared to a rifle round are completely different. There's far more trama when you get hit by the 7.62x39 then the handgun round he's holding.

      Not at that distance. The handgun round is made to mushroom out even at that distance, whereas the rifle round would still be moving too fast and would make more of a pinpoint hole. Assuming they hit in the same location, the handgun round would likely leave much more tissue damage.

      Edit: I guess you're technically correct with your last statement because of your incorrect use of then vs. than. If you get hit by the AK then the handgun, you would, in fact, have more trauma.

      Probably not. I'm no expert, but based on a lecture I got about GSW's from a neurosurgeon in med school I would say that really isn't a likely scenario. It may not exit the skull, but it wouldn't "bounce around" per se. More likely, it would remain in the brain tissue (kind of like being suspended in jello).

      This rings faint bells from my forensic science lectures. A round like a .22, like you said, will lack the kinetic energy to go straight through the skull. Consequently, it will just wreck shit up inside you until it runs out of energy.

      Additionally, a smaller caliber would (I assume) travel more slowly. A slower round is more likely to tumble in the air, causing greater damage upon impact.

      I'm British, so my experience with firearms is, whilst much greater than most other Brits, is still lacking.

      That said, I've done a bit of research, and it seems that a Glock 17 fires a 9mm round at 375m/s whilst an M16 fires a 5.56mm at 948m/s. A fairly substantial increase.

      .22 ammunition does not appear to be widely used.

      It really depends. We were just shooting with some guys that had a .17 cal rifle. It's a supersonic round but because they are so small and going so fast they just leave pinpoint holes in most things it goes through. He said he was hunting coyotes, thought he was missing them but found them dead later. The rounds hit but they just went straight through them without causing much trauma.

      A .22 caliber bullet won't have the velocity to exit the skull. The shrapnel will basically shred the brain.

      Its inability to double-penetrate the skull is not as much a direct result of the lower caliber as it is the fact that there's less of a charge and therefore less energy behind the bullet.

      I got given a little .22 with a suppressor in Africa. I couldn't take it with since both the gun and the suppressor were banned in California, the former for precisely the reason we're discussing.

      The size of the hole is not what kills you most of the time. Cavitation (your insides being slammed around because of the air pressure generated by the bullet moving through you) is what causes the most damage. A good portion of the damage caused by a bullet is not visible from the outside.

      Well if it has the M67 as apposed to M43 rounds it will cause a hell of a lot of trauma due to tumbling.

        .22, or even maybe a frangible .38 (simply because of the energy expended at that range, although I don't know much about the penetration characteristics of that round post-break up) could possibly do this.

        The .22 in particular tends to bounce around in whatever body cavity they end up in, solely because they're light weight, carry a lot of velocity (that gets expended as it enters and passes through the body) and that's where their energy comes from. Not the mass, but the velocity.

        For a long time, due to the size, availability of ammunition, energy characteristics, and sound characteristics (i.e. ability to be suppressed) a pistol chambered in .22 LR was a favorite for covert agents and mobsters alike. If you just needed someone to die, didn't need to have it be right away, didn't need it to look like an accident, but you wanted to be stealthy with it? You'd probably look at a .22 LR with a suppressor. Really though, fire, explosions and accidents were far more common for mob hits and such.

          In order to acquire a fully automatic AK you need to go through special forms/tax stamps and have plenty of cash ($10,000 USD+)

          I'd say it's pretty fair assumption.

          It is, actually. It's a pain, long wait, the gun has to have been manufactured prior to 1986, and its a lot of money for a gun.

          Honestly, if his AK is full auto it's not quite the death sentence you are thinking of. Full auto weapons are a very quick and inaccurate way to blow through all of your ammo. There's a reason even the U.S. military restricts the new weapons to 3 round bursts.

          Not necessarily. One gun is a semi automatic and one is an automatic, one of them will shoot way more bullets per second than the other. I wouldn't want to get shot by either gun, but I'd rather be on the receiving end of a gun that shoots once per trigger pull than a hose of bullets.
