It actually greatly reduces the risk of ear infections, particularly in pit bulls. We had an awesome one named Rosco who was super sweet and great with kids that we didn't have his ears done because we thought it was inhumane, but he kept getting recurrent ear infections no matter how regularly we cleaned them, and we ended up having to put the poor baby down because he got one so bad it went to his brain. :( The vet told us that had we had his ears done, it would've saved a lot of trouble with the problems and vet expenses. Maybe do a little more research before jumping to conclusions, hmm?

Hey, sorry to hear about Rosco. Though I gotta say, this is the first time in my entire life I've ever heard someone say that it is done for reasons OTHER than to make Dobermans look scary, which, you've got to admit, is THE overwhelming reason people cite - so how much research am I expected to do? Wikipedia mentions nothing about the ear infections either... Why didn't a vet tell you to have them done when you first got Rosco?

We honestly didn't know when we got him. We went to an inexpensive vet who kept prescribing antibiotics, and by the time we went to a better one who was able to give us actual information instead of just writing a prescription it was too late. We made the mistake of not researching before developing an opinion and had very depressing results. We have pugs now and I can honesty say there's very little we don't know about the breed because we didn't want a repeat with another baby. I guess I'm saying learn all you can about generally accepted procedures specific to a breed before jumping to conclusions and learning the hard way, since it can end up in heartache. He really was the best dog we ever had. Didn't even really need training, he just knew what he was supposed to do and it's like he understood when we were talking. And now I'm getting sad thinking about it :(

Screw you asshole. He died 2 years ago and the vet said had his ears not held in bacteria he would've been ok. You are clearly a fucking moron who particularly doesn't know shit about shit about this, so just do the world a favor and go get hit by a bus or something so the population can increase by a few IQ points. You have NO place talking shit about a sad situation where my pet (who my husband had since we met in high school in '03) had a recurrent problem that we were misinformed about.

Some breeds (and even just some individual dogs within a breed) are more prone to ear infections than others, no matter what their living conditions are. I am going to get a Shar Pei and I've done a lot of research into the breed. You have to get them accustomed to laying on their side while you put a solution in their ear. After a few minutes they shake their head causing the solution and all the ear gunk to come out, thus preventing an infection. This is something they tell ALL owners to do, not just "oh you look like you have a dirty house, better clean the dogs ears". It's due to the shape of the ear canal and not because of the living conditions or habits of the dog. Shar Peis are more prone to it, but ear infections can happen to any dog, at any time. You shouldn't jump to conclusions or be an asshole about something you obviously know nothing about.
