Lorikeets are some of the most beautiful, majestic, mysterious birds in the world.

... and then they open their stupid goddamn beaks, and make the most awful, off-key, ear-splitting racket you've ever heard out of any living thing, anywhere, usually just as you're trying to get to bed.

[–]Catona 23 points24 points ago

I actually don't mind them, cockatoos however...good god, I've never heard more terrible noises come from a bird. They sit in the trees and bounce up and down while making this horrendous, zombie bird groaning noise. It's actually pretty hilarious until you're trying to sleep while they are doing it.

[–]Annon201 7 points8 points ago

Sulpher crested ones have the loudest ear piecing shriek.

We have plenty of Noisy Miners, Lorikeets, Galahs & Sulpher Crested Cockatoos around the place. Though my favourite are the regular Australian Magpies, they have such a huge vocabulary.

[–]Catona 4 points5 points ago

Yes, the magpies are my favorite! They sound like a pan flute or something, quite lovely.

"We are sorry but sharemagnet.com is not available in your country . We are adding new countries every day, please check back in a few weeks!" hah wut? It takes more effort to not include countries than to include them?

[–]evelution 2 points3 points ago

Fucking magpies and their "AAA-AAA-AAAA-aaaaaaa"

Got magpies and crows mixed up... I'm an idiot...

[–]Sunstream 5 points6 points ago

Nah, that's the crows. Magpies trill and twitter.

[–]evelution 5 points6 points ago

Fuck. I guess I should hand in my citizenship...

[–]PaddoK33N_ 4 points5 points ago

They twitter? "In a tree LOL."

[–]redmagicwoman 0 points1 point ago

I laughed, but seriously, they do make some beautiful noises

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEYc8Ge3nw&feature=related

We also have the rainbow lorekeets here where in Australia and see them quite often.

[–]PaddoK33N_ 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Australia. I know all about Magpies and I know they're evil bastards.

[–]redmagicwoman 0 points1 point ago

I used to work at a restaurant for almost 2 years, we had these massive glass entrance doors, we also had a seagull problem, and, of course there was Maggie the magpie, her beak was slightly bent like scissors, not sure what happened to her, but anyway she started coming around every day, I used to feed her, she'd eat from my palm, she was never noisy. I was usually opening the restaurant in the morning from the back door and I'd find her sitting outside the glass doors and waiting for me to open so she could come in. We didn't let the gulls come in, but Maggie was part of the restaurant at this point.

We had the pest control come around once because we had some roaches, but she must've eaten a roach because she got sick. Our boss even called AWL to ask how to care for her, it was a dark day that day...but she survived, got better.

The restaurant shut down eventually and I went back to see her but only saw her once and fed her. I miss Maggie and I hope she's well.

[–]Catona 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, those are the crows...I love how they sometimes sound like they just lost power or something at the end of their call...a few full powered caws and then the last one where it sounds like they just give up midway through out of sheer apathy and disinterest or something.

[–]evelution 2 points3 points ago

AAA-AAA-AAA-AAaaafuckit...

[–]nataku954 0 points1 point ago

I think that you got magpies and crows mixed up with Led Zeppelin.

[–]wintercast 1 point2 points ago

i have tried to find a good bird, finally, i have a green singing finch. That little tny bird can really SING. so pretty. And he will also shut up at night.

[–]stevekez 15 points16 points ago

They're also bitey little buggers. Probably my fault for putting my finger near their beak but damn them for biting it!

[–]DrDebG 5 points6 points ago

At the San Diego Wild Animal Park, there is an aviary where you can feed the lorikeets this nectar they go wild for. If you walk in with some of it, you are immediately descended upon by a swarm of them...and they very carefully do not bite your finger (because they know they get no nectar that way).

BTW...Wild Animal Park? Amazing. Worth the return trip to San Diego all by itself (and there were lots of things that would make Sn Diego worth a return trip!).

[–]ray_guns_are_back 0 points1 point ago

They did this at my last house. I'm in an apartment now :(

[–]Streetclamz 1 point2 points ago

Yeah man. We went to Emerald when I was a kid and the caravan park we stayed at kind of had this flock of tame -or at least relatively people-friendly- lorikeets.

'its ok to go and hand feed them!' they said. I still have scars on my fingers from the bitey little mother fuckers.

[–]AllRebelRocker 3 points4 points ago

Worse than the noises they make is their projectile liquipoop. Nectar diets = messy rooms.

[–]endomorphic 4 points5 points ago

or they fly at full speed within an inch of your head for the hell of it.

[–]JezuzFingerz 4 points5 points ago

Like Kim Kardashian?

[–]b214n 1 point2 points ago

Zing?

[–]A_Musical_Reply 1 point2 points ago

[–]HeyMrDeadMan 1 point2 points ago

Aside from the middle part, it sounds like something from Final Fantasy

[–]strobexp 1 point2 points ago

Also, they look like koosh balls

[–]Jamie9573 -1 points0 points ago

This.

[–]snapin -1 points0 points ago

This. These bastards seem to know when I have a hangover.

[–]rattoid 1 point2 points ago

worst are bush stone curlew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi1GX_VRaM0

[–]j03l5k1 1 point2 points ago

Staring at some out my window right now.

[–]Dreddy 1 point2 points ago

They are total fuckwits too. They used to bite the Green Leaks that dad would feed, but would not come near us just make a racket and steal the leftovers. I have a pic somewhere with the Leakies sitting on his head being fed honey bread.

Still, beautiful birds.

[–]LemonMae -2 points-1 points ago

Also, they rocket liquid shit out of their asses & you can only feed them a liquid diet or they will die.

[–]Not_actually_a_bear 6 points7 points ago

Actual that is false, my rainbow Lorikeet loves his sunflower seed, so they obviously don't need just a liquid diet.

[–]Sheather 1 point2 points ago

And a wide variety of fruits are fine too. How would they get by in the wild only being able to consume liquid? Seems close to impossible.

Wiki says: "Rainbow Lorikeets feed mainly on fruit, pollen and nectar"

LemonMae is just spouting a rumour he heard somewhere, most likely.

[–]LemonMae 0 points1 point ago

I used to work at a pet store, we had lorikeets. We fed them nectar & some mushy fruits & veggies. But we were never allowed to feed them any sort of solid food, because we were told they can't digest it & it could kill them. Some seeds & nuts are fine, but a Lori couldn't survive solely on a solid diet. They need their nectar, which is mainly what makes their shit so messy in the first place. They're beautiful birds, but with the way they scream & everything else that comes with them I would never be able to own one.

[–]Not_actually_a_bear 0 points1 point ago

I'm not disagreeing with you, I agree that yes they do require nectar like liquids and other supplements, its that the original post i responded to suggested that they require an only liquid diet!

[–]senefen 27 points28 points ago

Ahh Rainbow Lorikeets, making me homesick for their 5 am screeching to each other.

[–]stua8992 3 points4 points ago

Amen to that there are about 15 of them outside my window right now just losing the plot about a myna bird who came along. Good morning world

[–]JezuzFingerz 4 points5 points ago

Where did you used to live?

[–]wildey 4 points5 points ago

I dont know about senefen, but as an american I owned two for a while as pets. They're an uncommon but attractively popular sight at bird shows and breeder meets. Their food is damn pricey, though. Good lord.

[–]pants_on_my_head 22 points23 points ago

As an Australian, they are exceptionally common in the wild. Right now I'm watching 3 going ape-shit at each other in a bottle-brush tree beside my driveway. They're cool though, don't get me wrong, I love their screeching. We also have a pet galah, and a heap of sulphur-crested cockatoos that live in the area. Loud screeching is what we do here.

[–]Vagtard 10 points11 points ago

In maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, there's a bunch of eucalyptus trees lining the esplanade for about a kilometre. Lorikeets would flock to all those trees by the hundreds and screech their little lungs out right on 4pm all the way to 6:30. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. They're pretty but lord can those buggers make a racket.

[–]Dunnkid 5 points6 points ago

Ever actually camped at cottontree during that time? fucking birds everywhere.

[–]brookesy2 4 points5 points ago

Wow that's scary, I'm from Maroochydore! Never thought I would see anyone from here on reddit!!

And yep, I know where you mean :)

[–]hepalopala 1 point2 points ago

They do that at Burleigh Heads as well.

[–]happyCuddleTime 3 points4 points ago

I live in Sydney and the plane tree out front of my house is full of lorikeets in autumn.

[–]redmagicwoman 0 points1 point ago

I moved to Au 6 years ago, I lived in Byron for the 1st 6 months, and I swear the 1st time I saw rainbow lorikeets flying close to a tree I lost the plot, I actually screamed to my Australian partner at the time to come out and see these awesome birds, I was seriously in awe. He was like "Oh yeah, there's lots of them around", but stared at that tree where they landed for as long as they were in it. I still do that, they're just so pretty.

[–]interplanetjanet 0 points1 point ago

I can't speak for senefen, but I live in Melbourne and took a picture last year of several rainbow lorikeets sitting on a telephone wire connected to my neighbor's house.

[–]senefen 0 points1 point ago

Heh, yep Melbourne. The ones I see tend to live in the Rosanna parklands and head out to people's yards to eat.

[–]senefen 0 points1 point ago

Melbourne, Australia. A couple of blocks away from parkland. Plus up the coast at Merimbula where I went for the summer they're even noisier.

[–]waffleheart 19 points20 points ago

I painted this about half a year ago after seeing this photograph posted on reddit!

[–]rozyhammer[S] 0 points1 point ago

wow

[–]Wilson_ThatsAll 6 points7 points ago

[–]rozyhammer[S] 5 points6 points ago

[–]tiictaac 4 points5 points ago

Great pets, fucked up tongues though.

[–]SmokeNLark 7 points8 points ago

[–]jorsiem 1 point2 points ago

RGB Parrots

[–]swaggs262 5 points6 points ago

I love viewsonic!

[–]KPexEA 4 points5 points ago

We were visiting Australia from Canada about 10 years ago and stopped by a park where you could feed the wild Lorikeets. They gave you a little dish with a sweet liquid in it and the trees were filled with hundreds of Lorikeets, after a few minutes they all flew down and landed on the tourists heads and arms etc and quickly drank the liquid from the dish. Our kids loved it.

[–]DoctorRobert420 2 points3 points ago

alright /r/birdswitharms, LETS GET SOME ARMS UP IN THIS BITCH

[–]tigerbird 0 points1 point ago

There is a subreddit for everything.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 2 points3 points ago

I bet they taste like Skittles.

[–]Milhouse_is_a_meme 2 points3 points ago

My sister in law owns one.

She named it Skittles.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 0 points1 point ago

BUT WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?!?!?!?!?!

[–]Milhouse_is_a_meme 2 points3 points ago

Quail.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 0 points1 point ago

...with a Skittles reduction?

[–]Milhouse_is_a_meme 1 point2 points ago

...

Fruity quail.

[–]Ancel3 1 point2 points ago

I came for a "Taste the Rainbow" comment.

Almost left satisfied.

[–]YoureMyBoyBloo 1 point2 points ago

You and every other chick that came near me tonight...

[–]TyperMonkey 2 points3 points ago

I own several Lorikeets 2 of the rainbow variety and 2 of the greenies. Adore em, the greenies are cheeky buggers climbing all over and nimbling your ears as your trying to set up their feed.

[–]FrankZappasNose 1 point2 points ago

Punk kids.

[–]Tijuanafistfuck 1 point2 points ago

Uh oh. Somebodys FABULOUS!

[–]Not_actually_a_bear 0 points1 point ago

I get hundreds of the things out the back of the house most come to visit my rainbow Lorikeet, very beautiful bird.

[–]just-did-it 0 points1 point ago

That is a great photo. What is the source/photographer?

[–]Zeydon 1 point2 points ago

So THAT's where Koosh balls come from.

[–]thedtrain12 1 point2 points ago

Oh god, my lorikeet was SO FUCKING LOUD. Still when he wanted to play in water he made the cutest chirping noise in the world. I miss him now :(

[–]Milhouse_is_a_meme 1 point2 points ago

America has pigeons everywhere.

Many parts of Australia have these guys.

Much better to look at, but loud as shit.

[–]Schobbo 1 point2 points ago

So cute :)

[–]soapwater 0 points1 point ago

Aren't those both male? Appropriate.

[–]WelcomeToSkyValley 1 point2 points ago

You can't tell with Rainbows, the male and female both look identical. you have to get them DNA sexed.

Source: I own a rainbow lorikeet.

[–]Supernyan 1 point2 points ago

I think this would be a good challenge for shitty_watercolor

Lorikeets: Flying Can Openers.

[–]Poitertoip 0 points1 point ago

"Psst... Hey, is that a human?" "Shhh.. If you stay still, he can't see you."

[–]xDatBear 0 points1 point ago

The one on the left looks like a total bro

[–]WelcomeToSkyValley 0 points1 point ago

I wish my rainbow lorikeet would pose nicely for a photo. He always manges to make himself look retarded whenever a photo is taken.

[–]SilencerLX[!] 0 points1 point ago

Lorikeets! Australia! I feel relevant!

[–]sideone 0 points1 point ago

[–]therealsuperugly 0 points1 point ago

You can feed them nectar at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh!

[–]cjstevo1 1 point2 points ago

Used to see these a lot where I grew up in SE Melbourne. Beautiful birds! They have strange fury tongues. http://www.picable.com/slicedshow/tags/Lorikeet

[–]adamphetamine 0 points1 point ago

I live in an apartment and the crazy lady downstairs feeds a whole bunch of these birds. It's fantastic because they hang around in the tree outside our window for a couple of hours each day. They will sometimes fly right up to the window to have a look and will eat out of your hand (although this is illegal and potentially fatal for them so we don't do it any more). Unfortunately the guy who lives underneath the crazy lady only get their shit, so he's taken crazy lady to court to get her to stop. Pretty sure she has just ignores him, in any other universe she'd have 50 cats

[–]fal86 0 points1 point ago

These birds are annoying as fuck, when you have 1000+ in 1 gun tree you struggle to hear yourself think!

[–]Lostwanderer91 -1 points0 points ago

How FABULOUS!

[–]saywhatisobvious -3 points-2 points ago
