My cats do this. It permanently bends the aluminum blinds.

[–]omglazers 129 points130 points ago

This bends the blinds.

[–]UnnecessaryPhilology 115 points116 points ago

Those bendable blinds were first named in 1771, obviously a pluralization of blind. Blind comes from the Old English verb blendan "to blind" or "to deprive of sight." From the Proto-Germanic verb *blandjan of the same meaning. Blandjan is a 'Germanitization' of the Proto-Indo-European verb *bhel- "to flash" or "to burn." How did a word that meant to 'to flash' come to mean 'to deprive of sight?' The route of Germanitizi...zizing the verb is to go from "flashing" to "causing confusion" with a bright light. From there it began to mean to blind. This middle meaning of confusion rather than blindness is retained in archaic English phrases, like a blind alley which did not always mean closed-at-one-end. The antique idea of 'blinding' remains because Germmi... is such a powerful process in the path of language.

Many blinds are actually 'jalousies,' like the ones in my apartment. Its from the French jealousy, referring to the idea of a jealous lover peering through the blinds.

[–]HyperShadic9189 1 point2 points ago

My cat goes behind the blinds, and all you see is a giant lump.

[–]pooponagoose[S] 20 points21 points ago

Thankfully these are plastic so cheap to replace. I may end up just replacing them with curtains.

[–]thrakkerzog 37 points38 points ago

Do your cats have claws? If they do, you may wish to reconsider.

[–]pooponagoose[S] 18 points19 points ago

No, she was declawed before I got her as a kitten.

[–]Bitingsome 45 points46 points ago

Fuck people that declaw cats. It should be illegal in a civilized society.

If you want something without claws buy a rug.

[–]reddithatesthegals 20 points21 points ago

You're totally right - instead of being declawed and placed with loving owners the cats should be put down because that is what happens with unwanted animals.

ITT self righteous morons

[–]suzepie 19 points20 points ago

Declawing actually increases the chances that a cat will be returned to the shelter it was adopted from. Why? Because declawing dramatically increases behavioral problems, particularly litter box issues. And if someone's worried about their beloved couch getting snagged, you can bet they won't put up with inappropriate elimination issues. There is no good excuse for declawing. Seriously. None.

[–]ZMaiden 2 points3 points ago

Also, a declawed cat is more likely to resort to biting in any confrontation. Because they always feel threatened by the loss of their primary weapon.

edit: I'm gonna try and preempt any further downvotes by, da dada daaaa, citing my sources. http://www.save-our-paws.org/professional-studies.php There you go, enjoy.

[–]neutraltone 17 points18 points ago

A loving owner would never cut it's pet's toes off...

[–]weefaerie 7 points8 points ago

don't know why you're getting downvoted. i agree. people don't understand that "declawing" a cat is not just removing its claws (imagine having your nails ripped off), but removing the whole first knuckle. and it usually ends up causing emotional/behavioral issues in the cat.

[–]pipboy_warrior 5 points6 points ago

Can't the loving owner decide to adopt the cat AND let the kitty have its claws?

[–]lagdog 10 points11 points ago

I don't understand this. why de-claw a cat? ive had 9 pet cats in my life and non of them have tried to mess up the curtains. get them a scratching post if they need it ... otherwise this is just cruel

[–]neutraltone 9 points10 points ago

I'm so glad it's illegal in most European countries. I believe it's also illegal in Australia and New Zealand.

[–]Aethne 9 points10 points ago

It's actually written into my lease that cat parents have to declaw their cats. I absolutely refuse to do that to my little guy, because I think it's unnecessarily cruel. Yes, he sometimes sharpens his claws on my furniture. You know what, they make double sided tape that you can put on the edges of your furniture. Cats hate the feeling of sticky on their paws and will leave it alone if they touch it. If my management company finds out, they could technically have me evicted. I still won't consider it...because, fuck them.

[–]suzepie 3 points4 points ago

That's nuts. Declawed cats have a much, much higher rate of litter box/inappropriate elimination issues, which you'd think would be much more of a concern to a landlord. I'd want to educate them, I think, so that they're not encouraging declawing. Ugh!

Edit: If you decide to try to educate your management company (perhaps anonymously?), you might want to send them to The Paw Project. The FAQ section in particular has some great information about the ways in which declawing increases behavioral issues.

[–]NotEntirelyUnlike 4 points5 points ago

I would never declaw a cat but mine skips the curtains and really enjoys her scratching post and the door jams , the carpet, window screens and the leather backing of my couch. Obviously have tried many methods of encouragement to get her to stop tearing shit up but it turns out she's just a bitch.

[–]deepfeeld 19 points20 points ago

Fucking America. Don't ever let that cat outside, shes completely defenseless.

[–]thrakkerzog 98 points99 points ago

Not completely. She still has rear claws and teeth.

[–]JonnieGoodboyTyler 41 points42 points ago

My cat, when I was a kid, was de-clawed. She fought off dogs, other cats, brought home birds, rabbits...she was a bad ass...and her name was Snuggles.

[–]Sypike 12 points13 points ago

First time I've seen badass and Snuggles in the same sentence...

Although common in North America [and Asia] elective declawing is considered an act of animal cruelty in many countries.

Declawing is legal in most US jurisdictions. It is estimated that 25% of owned cats in the United States are declawed.

On the other hand...

In many European countries the practice is forbidden either under the terms of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals or under Local Animal Abuse Laws, unless there it is for "veterinary medical reasons or for the benefit of any particular animal."

Some European countries go further, such as Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, where declawing cats for non-medical reasons is always illegal under their laws against cruelty to animals.

In the United Kingdom, declawing was outlawed by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Even before the 2006 Act, however, declawing was extremely uncommon ... the procedure was considered cruel by almost all British vets, who refused to perform it except on medical grounds.

[–]CapWasRight 4 points5 points ago

I'm actually very surprised to hear that only 25% of American cats are declawed. Judging from people I've known, and how many people are taken aback when I explain the procedure and tell them that it's cruel, I would have guessed more like 80%.

[–]Jonny1992 21 points22 points ago

Most vets in the UK, Australia and New Zealand refuse to, or are banned from doing it. It's considered a brutal and inhumane way of dealing with a cat. It's a common practice in America but an extremely rare practice elsewhere.

It's animal abuse. They chop pieces of the cat off. Not just the claws but bone, ligaments and tendons around the claws.

[–]CapWasRight 2 points3 points ago

Do these countries allow tail docking in dogs?

[–]Jonny1992 3 points4 points ago

It is illegal to dock the tail of a dog in the UK if it is not a working dog. A working dog can include a military dog, rescue dog, pest control e.t.c.

A pet dog can no longer have it's tail docked.

[–]KingNick 0 points1 point ago

Not only defenseless, but it hurt that kitten like a motherfucker to have part of his/her ligament and bone removed. Fucking declawing is the worst thing you can do to a kitten. Just don't be a lazy fuck and clip your God damn cats nails every once in a while

[–]harleybabee 2 points3 points ago

Agreed! Catch them in the middle of a nap or two through out the day and clipping the nails can be done in about 10-20 seconds total! I don't understand why people have such a hard time. Also, my vet does it for free during regular check ups. Don't adopt a pet unless you're willing to care for them correctly!

[–]KingNick 2 points3 points ago

As a Man who worked as a Vet Tech for 2 years, I can safely say that it's the easiest and quickest maintenance you have to do with your pet. Even if your cat hates having his/her nails trimmed, there are numerous ways you can hold the cat to make it easy on yourself! Or you can have someone hold and calm the cat for you! Or if it's exceptionally difficult for you, just gently wrap the cat in a towel and only have one paw out of it at a time! Easiest thing in the world.

Just don't be a lazy fuck who thinks its okay to cripple a cat to save yourself the hassle of a 10-15 minute chore you have to do once or twice a month.

[–]you-faggot 4 points5 points ago

Fucking declawing is the worst thing you can do to a kitten

  • cutting off the limbs with a cauterizing scalpel, so that it lives, then using it as a ball for your dog
  • running it slowly tail-first through one of the old rolling-pin clothes dryers
  • replacing the eyes with rock-salt
  • lacerating it and sewing it to another kitten so that their blood vessels intermingle during regrowth, free street release program
  • kitten anthrax
  • completely cover the kitten in superglue, allowing it to harden. kitten statue!
  • feed it live to one of those huge pythons that eat small animals whole
  • keep it in a shoebox. every time before you open the shoebox to drop in a handful of food, you bare-ass fart into a funnel that leads into the box. never clean the box

But seriously, anyone that hurts a cat deserves to be cock-punched to death.

[–]KingNick 4 points5 points ago

I stopped reading after the first one; my imagination can't handle these things while I have my kitten Nick Furry in my lap.

But seriously, I worked as a Vet Technician for 2 years and it was fantastic; I was asked to work for a better Vet for more money and I went to work over there, and then after about 2 weeks they asked me to assist with a Declawing...I asked her if she was joking and she said "No, we are Pro-Declawing", and as she started to list the positives of Kitten Declawing, I told her "I quit." and walked out. Fuck declawing, man...it's not right.

[–]Mrekat 1 point2 points ago

Oh jesus, my imagination is too vivid for this!

[–]I_am_God_seriously 1 point2 points ago

Defenseless against those damn bunny rabbits and pigeons, and blimey do they pack a punch.

That was a joke by the way, I'm against cat declawing. I just wish you could control cats like dogs. :(

[–]neutraltone 6 points7 points ago

That's fucking barbaric. I'm pretty sure that would be considered animal cruelty and come with a prison sentence here in the UK.

Must be really shit for the cat as well...

[–]Candle_Jack_ 4 points5 points ago

is declawing a cat really illegal in the UK?

[–]Candle_Jack_ 9 points10 points ago

i wish it was like this in the US. i have 2 cats and refuse to declaw them

[–]reddit_poster_anon 2 points3 points ago

Thank God no one is forcing you to do it.

[–]neutraltone 0 points1 point ago

Shame more are not like yourself.

I would never consider doing this, what does it accomplish?

[–]frmatc 6 points7 points ago

Same reason why people neglect their dogs and cats to the point where it's unhealthy: they see them as property, not a companion. I've never heard the anti-declawing argument put better than "If you think your belongings are more important than the health of your cat, then maybe you shouldn't have a cat."

[–]greenyellowbird 1 point2 points ago

I'd keep them....this is the funniest picture I've seen all day.

[–]Tgg161 2 points3 points ago

My old boss's cat did this and it got tangled and accidently hanged itself one day.

[–]shuzumi 4 points5 points ago

vertical blinds prevent this kind of damage

[–]thrakkerzog 9 points10 points ago

True. But then the cats run through them as fast as they can at 3:00 AM.

The only winning move is not to play.

[–]Carwash1152 4 points5 points ago

[–]mslade 124 points125 points ago

[–]SilentWalrus92 84 points85 points ago

That pic is kinda sad

[–]mslade 70 points71 points ago

While I wouldn't call it "sad", I think I know what you mean. Jimmy's my pride and joy and spends most of his time out of his cage, and he loves looking out windows and talking to the birds outside. But he's not well socialized with people or other birds, so he can't interact with anyone other than my wife and I. We adopted him from a rescue who got him from an old woman who collected birds, and before that his history is unknown.

All told, I don't think people should own birds - it's counter to everything about their nature (to live in a flock, forage, and fly around frequently). But as a bird lover, as long as there are birds with bad homes, I'm willing to adopt and try to make things as good as I can for them.

Anyhow, here's a pic of Jimmy saying "Don't worry, I'm happy": http://imgur.com/yh3U6

[–]qetuop1 21 points22 points ago

"Don't worry, I'm happy" As he prepares what looks to be a noose. ;)

[–]RapMaster5000 11 points12 points ago

Do you live in Pleasantville or something? That's one of the most tidy looking neighbourhoods I've seen

[–]mslade 8 points9 points ago

The development's only a few years old, near Lake Mary, FL. It was only after moving here that I realized that I wasn't cut out for suburban life (I grew up in the country) so I'm hoping to sell the house early next year. Wish me luck.

[–]OneCello 13 points14 points ago

Your bird fits a little better though.

[–]FlippyWippy 7 points8 points ago

Pro-Tip: you usually can't modify the overall image and have it come out looking right. You need to mask out different sections to treat differently.

I'm a photographer and know this, but good tip. The TV screen in particular would be what would throw most post-processing newbies off, given that most screens show up with a strong blue cast regardless of the WB of the rest of the photo.

[–]linds360 2 points3 points ago

Sorry, the comment wasn't really meant to be "schooling" you in particular. I was just following the thread.

Here's one with a slightly better TV. Totally missed that the first time.

[–]oiseau_x 6 points7 points ago

Is that Judge Judy on the television? I would do the same thing to get away from the sound of her voice.

Cute. My dog doesn't bother the blinds in the windows but she does like to get between the vertical blinds on the back sliding glass door. Which I don't care because it doesn't ruin them...or at least she hasn't fucked em up yet anyways.

[–]jtyler998 2 points3 points ago

Is that Keeping Up with the Kardashians you're watching? Because that is definitely Bruce Jenner on the TV.

[–]Jeepersca 2 points3 points ago

I swear, why do any of us still attempt to keep mini blinds. Bent at the edges from entry/egress, chewed cords, and dogs stuck half way through them. We should just all give up and switch to drapes, at least those just sprout kitten fruit up the sides.

[–]othersomethings 1 point2 points ago

[–]LatinoNino -1 points0 points ago

Maybe your cat doesn't like living with you and he/she is trying to find a way out... Plan A failed, going out through the window. Time for Plan B....

[–]peanut_allergy 0 points1 point ago

My cat loves to climb through one of the slits in the blinds completely so that he is fully behind the blinds and pressed up against the window. Gotta love them cats.

[–]Echelon525 0 points1 point ago

So how many blinds has your cat gone through? My sister's cat used to do this and they would break all the time.

[–]salaciousremoval 0 points1 point ago

Lazy cat is lazy. Cute!

[–]9ren -1 points0 points ago

He's just leaning against the blinds for support.

[–]Philoninternet 0 points1 point ago

My cat does this too, only with her paws and sometimes the entire front half of her body. She's ruined more than one set of blinds, but I can't be mad at her, it's adorable.

[–]Muffin_Much_U 0 points1 point ago

My cats do that all the time we have to alway leave one of the shades open.my friend's beagle does that top

Fucking hell that cat looks like it has such a chilled out life. I'm so jealous of well-loved pets. Adjusting for relative wants and needs, my guinea pig has a fucking paradise of a life compared to mine.

I remember reading somewhere that when the machines take over we could become little more than pets, and everyone was like "oh my god noooo", but I was like "hell fucking yes!!!!"

A pet's life for me please!!!!!

[–]bschnad 1 point2 points ago

Is it just me or did anyone else realize that Hot Rod is on tv?

[–]Expects 1 point2 points ago

My child-hood cat would use her paw to pull open the blinds a little bit in order to peek out the window. Her name was ollie, I taught her to sit on command. I loved this cat to death. My mom had her de-clawed in order to "save her new couches". She went to some back alley vet and saved a few bucks on the de-clawing. Ollie would never be the same cat, Less inclined to come sleep on my lap while i watched tv. When she sat down, she would hold her right paw in the air always. I knew it was from the back-alley de-clawing. A few years after I moved out she decided the cat that my mother and i both loved should be put down because it might scare the grandchildren that will be coming to visit her one day. I told her i would take ollie to live at my house, she declined for reasons i will never know and had my best pet of my whole life put down, without telling me....i told her everytime we spoke on the phone to "give me ollie, never thinking she would actually do it. I remember she came to visit me and told me in a resturant, "oh and fred ollie is dead"

I dono, true story about my child hood cat named Ollie :(

[–]LastPaleLight 0 points1 point ago

Please be careful with cats and blinds.

My cat managed to get snared in our window blinds when we weren't home, and he ended up having to have a hind leg amputated because of the nerve damage.

The vet said it was the fourth or fifth time he'd seen the exact same thing happen.

[–]emmy6824 0 points1 point ago

[–]MadKat88 0 points1 point ago

I laughed so fucking hard at this, thank you for posting hahahah

[–]JimRustleLMP 0 points1 point ago

That's cute! But you should stop her. Every year pets and small children choke to death on blinds. They cause more incidents than accidental poisoning.

[–]girlinthecity 0 points1 point ago

Awwww! My kitties do this too. Only they sit on the windowsill and hit the blinds so they open and close. They do that for a long time. It amuses them. lol

[–]thatcleverchick 0 points1 point ago

It appears you're watching Judge Judy. DOUBLE WIN

[–]tiwimon 0 points1 point ago

This is why we can't have anything nice...

[–]corpross 0 points1 point ago

I still remember the day the younger of my two cats jumped on the drawer next to the blinds and did the" I don't even" thing by jumping directly into the blinds and halfway stuck in it. I just went back to playing my game on the PC. I still wonder if he missing brain cells.

[–]hoosyourdaddyo 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of the time that my wife and I saw a guy come and try to peek in on us through the blinds. What he didn't know was that our cat was sitting on the dresser looking out, and when he noticed him, he put his paw on the blind and pulled it down to get a look at the peeping tom.

I must imagine it scared the fuck out of him to see this big green set of eyes staring out at him. He took off like a shot!

[–]Incrediben 1 point2 points ago

And I see you like.... Judge Judy is it?

[–]JiveMasterT 0 points1 point ago

Mine has to put her whole body on the other side of the blinds. That's why we have entire sections of the blinds busted out.

[–]Undercrown 0 points1 point ago

I think this is the best cat picture I've seen in /r/aww. That's hilarious.

[–]Im_Not_A_Rapper 0 points1 point ago

Your cat is just browsing window.

[–]Kr0nos 0 points1 point ago

Looks like your cat has a drinking problem.

[–]shades_of_black 0 points1 point ago

How have your blind not been ruined? I gave up trying to even keep them.

[–]bad_situation 0 points1 point ago

Cats should be classified as a liquid.

[–]theWolfPack 0 points1 point ago

[–]mortarpadowan 0 points1 point ago

His paw. It just hangs there. Cutest thing I've ever seen.

[–]Moobyghost 0 points1 point ago

I had a cat, name Egon, who died of some type of kitty cancer. I only had him 2 or 3 years before it took him. He was always burning away one of his nine lives. He got stuck behind the water heater once, under a waterbed, got closed in a freezer once, the dryer, etc. However, what reminded me of him from this post is he would do the exact same thing, only on our tv and stretch out in to the blind to see out. When you pulled in the driveway he would freak out and jump down to the floor an act like he didn't do anything. One night i some how got in the driveway without him seeing me and made it to unlocking the door before he heard/saw me and he took off. He apparently got caught when he lept and ripped down the whole blinds. When i opened the door he was on the floor, tangled in blinds, and licking his paw like nothing ever happened. I loved him and miss that cat.

[–]Rullys 0 points1 point ago

It's the dangling paw that does it for me. lol

[–]illasya 0 points1 point ago

My dad hates when I show him stuff from reddit and thinks I'm addicted. Though, he's been laughing at this picture crazily for the last twenty minutes.

[–]alittler 0 points1 point ago

My cat sleeps on the window sill, but not like this!

[–]Opaltruistic11 0 points1 point ago

Oh cats, such creepy little mystery solvers.

[–]robotsaute 0 points1 point ago

I'm really bored at work waiting to leave in 2 minutes so I made it less yellow for you. http://i.imgur.com/k0jSZ.jpg
