I own a 3000 mW infra red hand held laser. It's very similar to a real light saber except that the beam is mostly invisible to the human eye..... the laser emits no heat at all. However... I can cut through plastic spoons with it, light paper on fire with it, and yes... I have lit cigarettes with it (not in my mouth, that would be blindingly dumb)... so yes, things that emit zero heat can still light things on fire. Also, how would a light saber heat up metal to the point that Obi wan could cut through solid metal doors like in the infamous episode one movie, if it couldn't at least light a cigarette first?

Also I think a good question to ask is how Vader is even drawing air through his mask strong enough to smoke.

I don't imagine one can have a beam, or light saber for that matter, that's too "hot" to light a cigarette. one might have to be extra careful not to burn the entire cigarette if the beam is powerful enough to do that, but it will still light it. I don't know about the physics of light sabers, but I know that lasers emit pure energy in a single wavelength of light (like IR 808nm, green 550nm or blue 450nm) the "heat" of a laser is measured in miliWatts. I can light a cigarette with 750mW of light, a match will ignite with 100mW of laser light. plastic and cardboard will ignite with 2000mW, and metal can be cut with 500,000mW of laser light... if light can cut metal, it can certainly light a cigarette.

All i can think of is someone on O2 and hooked up to dialysis smoking through their trachea since Anakin was horribly burned and maimed and obviously has respiratory problems. The scars are on the inside too.

Yes you can...Take a magnifying glass with you while watching a nuclear explosion, and if you are lucky you can focus enough light beams to ignite a cig. Read an article a few months ago on reddit about someone's granddad or something doing just that.

Awesome!! energy =mass x the speed of light squared. Therefore, since mass and energy are interchangeable, all weapons are energy weapons. No doubt, many can light a cigarette.

In the Star Wars universe there is another form of energy (aside from chemical, mechanical, and thermal, like in our universe) and also separate from the obvious form of energy apparent in the force. This form is known as "pure energy", and it's what the light saber blade is comprised of. Other little facts about the blade itself, which actually more closely resembles a ribbon or a loop rather than a point-to-point blade, is that it has zero weight. This means that unlike stokhli sticks or gaffi sticks, wielding a light saber would be literally like wielding a flash light. This would be a confusing dynamic which probably resulted in the loss of limbs in many who attempted to practice with one. Also, a light saber's power is only depleted when it comes in contact with another object, so a Jedi could have the blade extended for an eternity and it would never lose power.

Now granted this info was gleaned from the original Star Wars: Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology book, and there has been a revised version which i haven't read yet, so they may have decided to change some things.
