Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is Tatev Monastery in Armenia. Here's an interior picture: http://i.imgur.com/7rqnz.jpg

Did you know there's an Armeniapedia? I didn't!

[–]that-freakin-guy 56 points57 points ago

I knew there was an Armeniapedia. Usually, it's my dad. He apparently knows everything about being Armenian. Same with every other Armenian parent. Every answer to any question, ever, is in their head. Ever.

[–]mynameisrichandiama 30 points31 points ago

Armenians built Reddit.

[–]that-freakin-guy 5 points6 points ago

Damn straight we did. I wonder if Alexis ever drops Armenian around his parents. He's like me, really white washed, but I'm hoping he too speaks Armenian fluently.

[–]mynameisrichandiama 1 point2 points ago

Not Armenian myself. But, I don't know an Armenian who is not proud of their heritage and can't speak at least a handful of words and phrases.

[–]saktajian 0 points1 point ago

this is usually said about everything... im happy in this case it is true

[–]manaiish 23 points24 points ago

"It's called Armenian coffee, dembo!"

[–]za72 7 points8 points ago

Ahh, you made my day... nothing like a little insult to make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside :)

[–]manaiish 26 points27 points ago

I would make a twitter account "Shit my FOB Armenian Dad says"

-"Why you are not understanding me? I am telling you, I want iphone for my son"

-"Sir, which type of iphone?"

-"What you mean, I want Apple iPhone!"

[–]mynameismaren 1 point2 points ago

This is so true it's scary hah.

[–]zedfox 2 points3 points ago

Ask him if there are any badass hidden passages or crypts in this Monastery. Or anywhere in Armenia really.

[–]that-freakin-guy 1 point2 points ago

He visited the monastery in the summer, but didn't dish any juicy details. I'm sure there are, but Armenians aren't that exciting so I highly doubt it. We're too boring for secret passages, and we'd probably yell so loud that the people forcing us to use the secret passages or crypts would find out about it anyhow.

[–]KlirisChi 1 point2 points ago

No hidden passages there, per se, but there's a lot of little underground areas that can be viewed from the upper floors.

It's pretty damn cool and one of my favorite places I went to when I was in Armenia this summer

[–]asimov_fan 1 point2 points ago

Haha yep. My father too is an Armeniapedia.

[–]starten 0 points1 point ago

I think this proves that I can never be a parent, since I'm Armenian born-and-raised, but know nothing about Armenia.

Well at least now I don't have to fret over that decision anymore!

[–]Osiris32 12 points13 points ago

In the 13th century it owned 680 villages, though some of the hippie villages fought hard to stay out of Tatev's hold.

Hippie villages?

[–]PretendsToKnowThings 6 points7 points ago

It's pronounced Armeniapaydia

[–]xCry0x 6 points7 points ago

It's pronounced Armeniapædia

[–]PretendsToKnowThings 8 points9 points ago

We would be fun at parties.

[–]steve_youngblood 2 points3 points ago

SHMOSBY

[–]penguinSLED 2 points3 points ago

I want to go to there.

[–]eclectro 0 points1 point ago

We need to turn it into a reddit clubhouse. But then I realized there are no grocery stores nearby....

[–]tttt0tttt 0 points1 point ago

Nice. Could use a lick of paint.

[–]Wingchunbum 1 point2 points ago

The Pendulous Column which swings during earthquakes and returns to its vertical position

I would love to see that. How does it even work?

[–]Meow_Mixxx 0 points1 point ago

Will be there in a month.

[–]downr0deo 2 points3 points ago

gettse hayastan

[–]NottaGrammerNasi 0 points1 point ago

Hijacking top comment to share... If you want to check out something cool, Google Maps that country and turn on photos in the upper right. Apparently that country has a crap load of old monasteries and churches.

[–]GTiHOV 2 points3 points ago

Greatest Armenian circle jerk I've come across thus far.

Love it.

[–]dude_wheres_my 26 points27 points ago

The old monestary in Tristram?

[–]SquashG 1 point2 points ago

I thought the same thing, if they ever made a diablo movie this place would be perfect.

[–]Zaph0d42 2 points3 points ago

Don't go in the basement!!

[–]BasketOfCats 3 points4 points ago

Too late! FRESH MEAT!

[–]notlmx07 59 points60 points ago

Armenian here. This is awesome. I'd love to go see it in person.

[–]NateTheGreat26 24 points25 points ago

I'm Armenian too, and I had a picture of this monastery hanging on my wall throughout my childhood. It's cool seeing it on Reddit.

[–]qwertyterj 10 points11 points ago

i think its safe to say ill upvote anyone for being armenian.. being armenian myself...

[–]libertitties 4 points5 points ago

Armenian here. I would also like to hop on this karma train.

I told my grandma that an Armenian guy made this website, and she complains less about my internet usage now. She also asked me if the guy who made it was single, because she's always wanted me to "settle down with a nice Armenian guy."

[–]shaqbiff 18 points19 points ago

definitely gonna see it next time i go to armenia

[–]ReUsable_Tampon 14 points15 points ago

Armenian here as well, I went last summer. It's beautiful.

[–]omgitsbacon 7 points8 points ago

Armenian here. I find it midly intriguing.

[–]forevermyname 10 points11 points ago

I'm so glad I'm not the only Armenian on reddit!

[–]chrism00r3 4 points5 points ago

another Armenian here, this post made my day

[–]Sugreev2001 1 point2 points ago

I have a friend from school from Yerevan and he moved back there after graduation. Is there a chance you can post pics of where you live in Armenia ? I might plan on going there someday.

[–]asimov_fan 2 points3 points ago

That's why I love google maps. I've never been to armenia, but my dad is heavily armenian, so I've heard and heard about it. Finally, out of curiosity, I went to see what it looks like on google maps. I strongly suggest!

[–]KlirisChi 3 points4 points ago

All of you Armenians, please subscribe to r/armenian and post there! It'll be great to get to know the Armenian community of reddit

[–]1369ic 2 points3 points ago

Went to see it several years back (2005, I believe). It's beautiful, but if it's the site I'm thinking of (we saw several really old sites in a couple day's time), the drive there is as interesting as the monastery itself.

[–]Friendlysoul 0 points1 point ago

Seconded, my relatives when there but i haven't had the change to visit.

[–]CorbinMontego 18 points19 points ago

I've been there. It's pretty along with many other sights in the country. It's a very charming and unique place. I'm an American btw, not Armenian.

[–]A_Musical_Reply 0 points1 point ago

[–]Gud84 29 points30 points ago

Getting some old school Diablo vibes from looking at this. Also great picture and I would love to see it in a bigger resolution :)

[–]snowplowj 7 points8 points ago

I can see what you see not Vision milky then eyes rot When you turn they will be gone Whispering their hidden song Then you see what cannot be Shadows move where light should be Out of darkness, out of mind Cast down into the halls of the blind

[–]asimov_fan 0 points1 point ago

What did I just read?

[–]centerbleep 1 point2 points ago

ahhh, so good to see this remaining in the collective memory. one of the best games ever made...

[–]slug_man 1 point2 points ago

Reminded me of that level from Clive Barker's Undying, actually.

Or, if you've got some real gamer class, that level in Painkiller.

[–]RHYMES_WITH_AGINA 12 points13 points ago

Is that on North Brand?

[–]ngorgi 7 points8 points ago

[–]thisiskaro -1 points0 points ago

[–]ZombieDisco 8 points9 points ago

Wait! Wait! Wait! I just realized I'm not the only Armenian-American on here besides the co-founder of Reddit, AND you all play Diablo?! Where have you fucking people been all my life?! Barev Dzez!

[–]KlirisChi 1 point2 points ago

Subscribe and post in /r/armenian !!

[–]jmurphy1989 7 points8 points ago

Upon first read, I saw this as "Ancient Monastery in America" and it all jsut didn't make sense. After reading, it's a fantastic image.

[–]Pirani 72 points73 points ago

Ah, Armenia. Where the men have beards, and the women also have beards.

[–]beardfordshire 36 points37 points ago

Dating an Armenian girl... Her dad basically did this to me:

http://i.imgur.com/6qLjt.gif

[–]immanence 5 points6 points ago

I would like to hear more about how this played out.

[–]breathe_happy 9 points10 points ago

I have no beard and neither does anyone in my family. The Kardashians on the other hand...well, you can't believe everything you see on TV.

Source: Armenian here.

[–]Pirani 4 points5 points ago

Armenian here as well, and I've had a beard since I was 14. Every male on my Armenian side has a full beard.

[–]seamouse 2 points3 points ago

One of the most attractive girls I know, who was my RA, worked at the hospital, and competes in Iron Man races is Armenian. Plus, there's SOAD. So you're A+ in my book.

[–]breathe_happy 0 points1 point ago

Why thank you! She sounds awesome!

[–]PoodlesMcDoodles 2 points3 points ago

[–]ararat-ararat 3 points4 points ago

Here's an entire photoseries on the monastery from English Russia http://englishrussia.com/2012/09/14/the-ancient-monastery-of-armenia/

[–]RESERVA42 0 points1 point ago

Great link. I want to know what all those openings on the wall/cliff face are.

[–]Eldrahir 6 points7 points ago

Goddamnit, now I have to go and build that in minecraft.

[–]za72 2 points3 points ago

[–]SapienChavez 0 points1 point ago

i just learned hippies are from the 1300s... what the fuck?!

[–]Delta_Pavonis 0 points1 point ago

Just in case your not joking, it's not the same kind of hippies.

[–]csilcock 3 points4 points ago

I dunno guys - reminds me more of the monastery on top of the cliff in Tomb Raider... :)

http://laracroft.wikia.com/wiki/St._Francis_Folly

And yes, I realize that the location in Tomb Raider is Greece.

[–]arktoga 1 point2 points ago

That level... pure awesomeness.

[–]pktchort 1 point2 points ago

I'd love to see it in person. That sort of "orthodox style" in architecture (forgive the lack of proper terminology, as architecture is not my specialty) is pretty common elsewhere throughout the Caucasus, namely Georgia. A monastery in the region of Racha, Georgia.

[–]naroush 0 points1 point ago

willing to bet it's armenian. only christian nation in the caucasus during those years. and now.

[–]oblivious_drawguy 4 points5 points ago

Tristram!

[–]Allhopeforhumanity 0 points1 point ago

My first thought exactly. Poor Pepin, that hell gate really does a number on your property value.

[–]Harutinator 3 points4 points ago

To access this place easily, you can take the worlds largest teleferique

edit: Some back story on this place. In the 1300s, there was a peasant revolt against the clergy. They advocated communist ideals, and some radicals even pushed for atheism. The rebellion was put down.

[–]Meow_Mixxx 1 point2 points ago

the way Armenia is headed we might need another one soon.

[–]Zublybub 6 points7 points ago

What minecraft texture pack is that?

[–]MrAmishJoe 0 points1 point ago

When I see things like this...I have only one thought. How the fuck did they build that?

[–]Lucretiel -1 points0 points ago

I think I built that in minecraft once

[–]c1namber 2 points3 points ago

God Damn the old country can be so beautiful.

[–]I_Pee_Sitting_Up 2 points3 points ago

Armenia is one of those countries that I know nothing about. Off to Wikipedia. Any of you Armenians want to share some of the best things about your country?

[–]thisiskaro 1 point2 points ago

I haven't actually been there but our food is good! Try some korovats aka Armenian BBQ

[–]forevermyname 0 points1 point ago

Go swimming in Lake Sevan! The water's cold but it's really nice! Also there's a church at the top of a cliff near the edge of the water and it's a quick climb up. Lot's of fun!

[–]Bear_Sheba 2 points3 points ago

I'm desperate to get to Armenia, I read that this monastery is in a valley with hundreds(?) of others, most (or all?) of which are abandoned.

[–]awelldressedman 2 points3 points ago

actually, most (nearly all) of the monasteries in Armenia are still in use. I went to a christening that was held at sevanavank saw a wedding at noravank sunday service at geghard and another christening at khor virap The monastery of tatev itself is still in use as well.

[–]DrLasagna 2 points3 points ago

Seems like they like to build structures on cliffs back in the day.

[–]HikeRobCT 3 points4 points ago

Armenia, city in the sky!

[–]LoLBROLoL 2 points3 points ago

Cool surprise, waking up to see Armenia on top of r/pics!

[–]freeall 2 points3 points ago

I want to go to there!

Some guys I know made this iOS travelling guide to Armenia. It was made by one from the team who is Armenian and she's super enthusiastic about it so it's probably good :)

[–]blakgodaftermath 2 points3 points ago

While incredibly beautiful, this Tatev Monastery is a prime example of how Armenian history was buried with the inception of the Christian meme. It was built directly atop a pagan temple (much like many of the other churches and monasteries) and most of the texts were destroyed. To this day most Armenians who claim to know about their heritage know nothing about the pagan roots, even though most of our traditions - weddings, for example - are heavily rooted in pagan symbolism and ceremony.

Edit because I can't spell.

[–]awelldressedman 2 points3 points ago

I don't know what you consider most armenians, but almost every armenian I've encountered knows their pagan roots quite well. Also, the current system of armenian churches and monasteries (built over the past ~1700 years) protected our culture and traditions from our aggressors. The ancient temple of Garni still stands and its pagan history is well preserved. Most young people in armenia today know their ancient history quite well and are all aware that the current monasteries and churches were built on top of the grounds of the old ones. They are also taught that the old ones were destroyed during christian revolution (~301 ad)

[–]emma_stones_lisp 2 points3 points ago

Hey that's my monastery!!! I'll take a pic from the inside and upload it

[–]andopew 2 points3 points ago

Finally a picture from Armenia on the web that's not about the poverty, or the corruption of the country.. It's truly a breathtaking country, pictures like this make me proud being an Armenian.

[–]HootingAngie 3 points4 points ago

Armenian here. TIL there are a lot of Armenians on Reddit....

[–]GTiHOV 0 points1 point ago

We're just great at circle jerking. It's only right.

[–]clush 3 points4 points ago

Reminds me of Dark Souls.

[–]Harouto 3 points4 points ago

There seems to be a lot of Armenian here. So happy !!

I'm Armenian but I was born in France and my parents were born in Lebanon.

Armenian's history and culture are so amazing ! You should definitely give it a look

[–]Grimfur 0 points1 point ago

[–]Snikkel111 -1 points0 points ago

OP, do you know what this is called or where its located?

[–][deleted] ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I noticed. It reminded me of The Name of the Rose ... specifically that large opening in the lower left... it looks like where the peasant girl snuck in to bang Christian Slater.

EDIT: link

[–]YougottabeQuick 2 points3 points ago

Ok which one of you muggles somehow found Hogwarts?!

[–]DanatBobanaman 1 point2 points ago

Im Armenian and thank you for posting this. Its cuts through all the bullshit with the turks and gives me a pleasant idea of what things use to be before all that shit happend.

[–]HiddenLinks 2 points3 points ago

Similarly, Geghard; which happens to be a monastery partially built out of the surrounding cliffs/mountains.

[–]Yablan -2 points-1 points ago

Aaand.. mandatory Zombie fortress comment in 3..2..1.. GO!

Pyramids of Egypt? Ancient.

Castles? Medieval.

The Roman Parthenon? Classical.

Learn your fucking historical terms idiot.
