I see reposts like this: Imagine you have a Jester, one who's purpose is to entertain you. you don't pay them in money, or food, or services, but in a mere nod of the head. He quite likes nods of the head.

So every now and then your Jester comes up and does his trick, shows you his content, and if you laugh, give a little head nod to show appreciation. He's not really asking for anything, and it doesn't cost you anything to nod your head.

If he comes up and performs the same trick as he has a few weeks ago, you of course have the option to shake your head or do nothing. But other people he does entertain with his trick will nod their heads if they haven't seen it before, and only a dickface asshole would go ruin other peoples fun by telling them "No! Stop nodding!"

Reposts dont bother me since it's upvoted by a majority of people who havn't seen it. What bothers me is all the fucking bitching about reposts in all the major subreddits. That and most complaints about karma-whoring.

It's an ongoing war between those that have been around here long enough to have seen them all and those who are new and don't want to content to be stifled. The real irony is reposts do stifle content because they take the place new OC, and the other side of that irony is that if the OC were better than the reposts they would be the ones getting upvoted. So really, neither side of the war knows what they're fighting for anymore. But it will rage on.

I don't really think it takes place of OC because I'm pretty sure there isn't a limit on Reddit as to how many posts the community can make per day... maybe I'm wrong there and Reddit is limited to like 100k posts a day, but I'm pretty sure that's false. What is infinitely more annoying than reposts, however, is reading comments consisting of "Repost!"

And you are 100% correct about if OC were funnier... Some of that shit is just...well, shit!

My point still stands. You may have seen it but for every person that has seen it there's probably 4-5 people that haven't seen it. So if you have 100 people that have seen it that's 400-500 people that haven't. This is why they can still hit the front page, because people haven't seen it before or have seen it and enjoyed it.

Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.

What good is pointing out a repost?

If I have seen it before, then pointing out that I've seen it does no good. It doesn't inform me. It's just annoying.

If I haven't seen it, I don't care. I enjoy it and I'm glad I was reposted. It does no good for someone to tell me that they have seen something I haven't seen.

So what case is it beneficial for anyone to point it out? What good does it do?

Time and time again I have seen complaints about things being reposts, whether popular or unpopular and that it gets tiring seeing the same thing over and over. Not only from everyone enjoying Reddit, but also being stated from the Mods of the subreddit themselves. The only thing I said that as much as people complain about things being reposts, when someone points it out, why do the get downvoted to hell. But that is Reddit for ya anyway and I could give a fuck less. I'm not here to get into who's dick is bigger over the internet.

If someone reposts from Reddit to Reddit, I hate it. If, however, someone is just posting web content that has already been posted, then they probably aren't intentionally reposting.

You wanna know the dark secret of who reposters are?!

WE'RE ALL REPOSTERS.

Sure, there are a couple of hardcore reposters, doing nothing but reposting, scouring the Reddits for successful posts and reposting them, but this is the minority.

You see, you might submit a hundred links in your time on Reddit. Now, if you're like the rest of us, very very very few of these will be successful. However, if you post a repost of a successful post, it will likely be successful again.

So if you post 100 posts, and perhaps one of them is a repost, that might be your only post that makes it to the front page, and you'll be branded a reposter, even though only 1% of your posts were reposts. You might not even have known. It might have been an accident.

The real people we should be blaming are the community that continually upvotes reposts. Why do they do this? Because Reddit is no longer a community! It's gotten so big that it's a cyclical content aggregator. The people on here one month are a totally different set of people than the people who are here another month: some come, some leave, some stay, some visit once or twice a week, etc.

We've lost our community and had it replaced by a faceless, thoughtless machine. And the cost of that is reposts. Blame the voters, not the posts.

I can understand how someone who posts an item would feel annoyed or disappointed when someone else reposts it later, particularly if the repost receives more upvotes than the original.

But as someone browsing reddit casually, more often than not I miss the original post. I'm usually grateful to reposters for showing me something I hadn't seen.
