Looks like the universal joint broke under load and the momentum of the frame couple with serious wheel hop broke a few suspension components loose.

the body dropped down too far and the wheels hit it, all the power had to go somwhere so it ripped the back end off

Magic... that's how everything gets done in 'Merica.

Everything has its breaking point.

The question in my mind isn't how, but why?

Too much engine and not enough frame.

You get to that point when you're tuning if you don't pay attention. Since a lot of people who do this are young, it can be tough for them to spend some of their hard-earned money on stuff that doesn't directly improve their 1/4 time or HP, but rather on axles/flywheel nets/mounts/suspension that keep the car running under that much power.

There are a couple older car guys I can think of that only spend on the fun stuff.

well one possible reason, when you stomp on the gas the pinion gear attempts to climb up the ring gear. when this happens, the nose of the rear end tries to pinion up. when this happens it can shock the heim joins of the ladder bars hard enough to shear them. if the tires dont break loose before you reach failure, or if the joints are brittle or made to the incorrect spec. then this happens. had a friend's 72 nova big block do this when he had 12.5" slicks and a 400 shot of nitrous, at the line he was at peak torque and it gave him about the equivalent of a 250 shot when he came off the transbrake, it was only supposed to deliver a 150 off the line. live and learn.

I honestly don't believe there is a Top Gear reference that I would not upvote.
